Over the past few decades the look of black hair market has changed tremendously. From press n-curls to afros to *gulp* Jheri Curls. However, it’s not that often we get to see how much the marketing of black hair has changed. Get into these gorgeous vintage black hair ads.

Yes, there was a time where roller sets were popular for men. I don’t know when that was but it happened.

Wow! this brings back memories for me..My mom would braid my hair for the week for school and for the weekend I could wear my afro! I was four years old at the time.. Now, I’m 51..went through all the hair stages..Now, I’m rocking my afro again ???? Love this article..brought back happy memories of the original Village..Created and maintained by Love.. Let’s duplicated for the next Generations instead of having them guess at life and the truth! Something about those Afro’s kept the village woke and Beautiful! Thank, you Lord for allowing me to be born in that time! For the past 37 years, Social work Practitioner, Educator..You name it!..I have been teaching the younger Generations. For that I am thankful!
Love these! I’m going to try and blow some up for posters. Love seeing all the styles and inclusion of the black family.
My Black is Beautiful!
WOW! This is a beautiful article. First to see truly Black families, you don’t see that anymore in advertisements and TV commercials. They are brain-washing the younger generation today to believe that the Black family is none-existing. We still have loving Black families but not in their eyes,
I remember some of those advertisements and loving the Afro’s, so Black & Beautiful.
I’ll probably print some of these and put in my Book of Yesteryears.
We’ve been transforming our hair forever! It’s so ironic how all these black hair transformations are still going on until today.
Unfortunately we weren’t aware of all the chemicals in these products. I used just about all of them in my hair.
These pictures make me so sad. I know times and fashion change but I wish looking like this wasn’t seen as a look today but just us being us because that’s who we are and how we look.
The ad w/ the “wave” family had me DEAD!
Me too! 😀
I’ll be 60 years old this year. My parents subscribed to Ebony and Jet magazines so I remember all of these ads. My favorite was of the beautiful chocolate family with the gorgeous baby girl and her two pony tails! Thanks for posting these… brings back a lot of sweet memories.
Yes!! I remember many of these ads in my grandma’s old Ebony & Fredericks of Hollywood magazines! So many memories!!!
Beautiful collection
Can’t remember when I have seen a black family ad. These pix are beautiful, made my day
This article was really good.
I love how so many of the pictures showed the family unit too.
We need to go back in time.
I remember many of these ads! So much fun in this reminder! Thanks for your work!
with each decade our texture got looser and looser until it was finally “bone straight” (hey i think that was a product back in the day!) smh…. these pics were such eye openers…and kinda sad… So the question is: in 15 years will the natural movement of the 2000’s be considered a phase or is it here to stay? i personally hope its here to stay….
Some of those sideburns are absolutely superb!
These ads would make great posters
These ads are hilarious! Whew! Thank God for change!!!????????
Awesome! I love seeing positive articles about black and African history!
