3 Tools that Promote Moisture in Natural Hair

Moisture doesn’t just come from the products we apply to our hair, it can also come from what we use to manage and care for it. Check out 3 tools that promote moisture in natural hair:

1. Satin Pillow Case/Scarf
You should all be familiar with this by now. At night you should protect your hair from the drying effects of polyester/cotton sheets and pillowcases, especially if you move around a lot like me. The satiny smooth material of the pillowcase/scarf will keep your style in place and keep dryness at bay. Don’t forget to line your hats and headwraps with this material or something similar.

2. Humidifier
If you live in a very cold/very hot dry climate or experience harsh temperatures, you may want to invest in a humidifier. This puts moisture back into the air. You can use it at night before going to bed. It is also good for your skin and prevents illness by keeping the mucosal lining of your nostrils lubricated to ward off germs.

3. Shower filter
Chlorine and calcium deposits from hard water can wreak havoc on hair (and skin) causing it to become dry, brittle and dull. A filter can keep these deposits from coating the hair. I purchased a filter from Home Depot for $20. Every 6 months, I purchase a replacement cartridge for only $10. It is so worth it! No more dry skin or hair in the winter!

Ladies, do you use any of these tools? How have they impacted your hair’s moisture level?

i am planning to buy a lot more satin/silk pillow sooner i gotta warn ya that satin is 100& better because silk has vary feelings . You would not know which one you are getting in mailing. Satin is surely better.

i have over 10 of them. some are handmade by me into satin scarf

trying to get started and create my own. Do you require any html coding knowledge to make your own blog?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  8. Hello all, here every person is sharing these kinds of knowledge, so it’s pleasant to read this website, and I used to pay a visit this weblog everyday.

  9. I’m extremely impressed with your writing skills as well as with the layout on your weblog. Is this a paid theme or did you customize it yourself? Anyway keep up the excellent quality writing, it is rare to see a great blog like this one these days.

  10. I use a satin pillow and scarf/bonnet and a water filter. I may consider the humidifier in the winter when it’s drier. But I live in the south where it is usually warm/hot humid weather spring and summer.

  11. Wonderful goods from you, man. I have understand your stuff previous to and
you’re just too excellent. I actually like what you’ve acquired here, certainly like what you are stating

  12. I’m not sure if you have heard of a woman named Talisha Berry, but I had a pleasure of meeting her while at a conference for work in Portland. Talisha shared her book tips with me and also allowed me to sample her new hair growth product which includes a blend of organic essential oils. I lie to to you not, my hair has grown 4 inches and is so healthy and that was just 3 months ago! My hair is coarse and very thick and I was suffering from breakage. I would definitely recommend you ladies to check her out. She promotes hair tips and secrets on natural and relaxed hair. Her YouTube channel is: TalishasSecret and her website is TalishasSecret.com

  13. I have been natural for 11yrs. But back then they didnt have the products they have now. But my hair is still at the same length. I had my daughter 5 months, taking vitamins and being pregnant just didnt help.Someone please give me some advice!

  14. I’m smack dab in the middle of menopause and have been natural since last summer. There’s no way I can tolerate a scarf holding in heat during a hotflash! I’ve tied a silk scarf around my pillow. Is satan better for moisture retention than silk? The flashes also cause crazy shrinkage throughout the day, but I choose not to use hormone replacement….so I just ride it out.

    1. Try using Remifemin or Estroven for flashes. Both are natural plant based, estrogen substitutes . Remifemin is made from black cohosh & Estroven has both black cohosh, vitamins & soy isoflavones

  15. I already do number 1 but for number 2, my idea of a humidifier is: spraying my hair with oil and water; putting a shower cap or plastic shopping bag onto my head then tying the satin scarf over it; then sleeping with them on and letting the heat from my body do the rest … 😉

  16. Will definitely look into shower filter. Amazon.com (no payola, just honest opinion) has good prices and reasonable shipping.

  17. I use a satin scarf and or bonnet every night before bed and even for naps. I do this to preserve my hairstyles, prevent lint from getting entangled in my hair and retain moisture. It works well on all three accounts.

I will get a shower filter in the future. I’m sure my hair and skin will benefit greatly from it.

  18. I use the silk pillowcase and headscarf. I also will wash my hair when it needs it as I use KBB Creamylicious which can build up. I also detox my hair now and try not to fear shampoo. Sometimes my hair just stops accepting moisture. I detox and suddenly my hair has much needed softness to it.

  19. I had a problem with my hair breaking like crazy. I only needed to look at it and it was on the floor. Tried everything. Until I realised that my apartment is very dry. If I hang my washing up in the morning, in winter, the clothes are dry as you like in the evening. My lips were cracking up, skin was scaly, etc… now I’ve got a humidifier and everything is under control. Even my handcream works and my hair is behaving. I wonder if I can get my hands on a shower filter – I’d love to try it? Satin/silk scarf at night goes without saying.

  20. I use a satin pillow case and head scarf. I want to get a humidifier, but I want to make sure that I get one that I really like. I think I’ll see if I can get a filter for my shower head, but I don’t know I have a fancy shower head.

    1. Vicks do a good one, at a reasonable price. The maintenance is very simple and is user friendly.

  21. I use the first two. I have a very close relationship with my silk scarf and unfortunately, I have chronic congestion so I have to have a humidifier. I notice on the nights I don’t use my humidifier, my hair needs extra product.

  22. I use a satin pillow case and because the water in hard in CA, I also use the shower filter. Both have worked well for me.

    😎

  23. This just shows that this environment is really not for Afrikan peoples at all! So many processes and how about if one can’t afford any of them, then what?

    Real hassel eh!

  24. We (my 3 girls and myself) use all three. We wear satin bonnets to bed and under our winter hats. First used a humidifier when DD#1 was a baby. The pediatrician suggested using one because the indoor heating was drying out her skin. Started using a shower filter about two years ago . I read an article about it helping some with eczema. The article stated the filter could remove some of the chemicals making it easier on the skin.

  25. I think I could use the water filter. My hair is so much happier at home where we have better pipes and shower heads with filters than in my apartment! I noticed that my soap wasn’t really lathering and I found out that this means I have hard water, so I could probably do with investing in a filter instead of using more hair products!

  26. I use the #1,#3 I see a big difference in my hair since i started using shower filter.. Got mines at Home Depot too.

    1. Shower filter helped tremendously for me. I thought I had high porosity hair until I got a shower filter and found out I was normal porosity.

    2. That’s it – I am sold! I am getting a shower filter ASAP! I thought it would cost me a lot of money, but $20 is cool!

  27. While I’d love to use all three, I only use a satin pillowcase and scarf. Even though I live in an area with hard water, it’s not so easy to find water filters where I am (in Europe) and, because of this, I use a chelating shampoo once a month to remove the impurities. And as far as using a humidifier, mold is already a problem I constantly battle. I just try to get the most out of my showers by not wearing a shower cap and letting my hair get a mini steam treatment.

      1. It removes the hard minerals found in water, hence the term “hard water”. Hard water is known to cause hair breakage over time.

  28. I only use the satin pillowcase/scarf from this list. I believe the other two are highly optional as long as you use the right products and methods for your hair. I haven’t needed the other two at all. However, if one feels the need, enjoy them to the fullest.

    1. Unfortunately I am a person who needs the humidifier first of all my Apartment is super dry, so in fact I brought home a bouquet of flowers put them in a vase with food and water. The next dry they were literally bone dry!. Also I am prone to eczema and dermatitis so taking column A and Column B with good measure of column C (naturally dry hair) during winter = I need humidifier.

Satin Pillow case is a bonus I love the feel and it has benefits too.
