As we kick off Black History Month I wanted to highlight four black woman-owned businesses that are innovating in 2024.
Ayana Safiya Ceramics
Ayana is a small creator who specializes in small batches of jewelry in Brooklyn. I had the pleasure of meeting her at a recent pop-up market. Her geometric and unique shapes make for beautiful statement pieces. She does custom pieces as well.

The Free Black Women Library
The Free Black Women Library is a community space in Bedstuy that offers free public programs. They highlight many black authors, and do a reading club and weekly book swap. Follow their social media and keep an eye out for the many events they host.

Peace & Riot
This Brooklyn boutique is a haven for beautiful, curated gifts and eclectic decor. Whether it’s to design your space, give a gift to a loved one or simply treat yourself this artistic shop is worth the visit.

BGLH Marketplace
And of course I had to mention BGLH Marketplace. BGLH strives to change the way we view shea butter — the star ingredient of its lush whipped butters — to embrace all it can offer, and recognize it for the powerhouse that it is. I am experiencing this myself, as I go from slathering Coconut Whipped Shea Butter on a minor burn (from a midnight brownie baking session), to using it as a daily lotion against the winter’s dry air.

I hope you’ll take the time to share love and appreciation for these businesses. Not only during Black History Month, but all year round. These brands are a testament that sometimes the little spark or idea you have in your mind is worth cultivating.
