We also thought it would be fun to look back and reflect on 9 highlights of the past 9 years.

1. Getting started in November 2014! I started BGLH Marketplace when I was 8 months pregnant with my daughter (lol!) so I birthed two babies in 2014. This is my daughter crawling on a supply shelf when I used to run the business out of my home. 

2. Getting our Brooklyn storefront in July 2017

3. Vending for YouTube Black in October 2018. This was our first ‘big name’ vending opportunity. YouTube asked us to provide 400+ butters for their annual YouTube Black event, and they paid full price! I was so giddy – and stayed up many, many, *many* nights to get the order out in time. Here is just a small portion of the order.

4. Our first time serving as wedding favors, in May 2018

5. Surviving a break in. We were broken into August 2020, at the height of the pandemic. 😢

6. Being mentioned in Elle Magazine in June 2020. We were noted as a top black beauty brand! We’re number 10 on the list! 

7. Our Ebony Magazine shout out by rapper Ace Hood. This one is still a shocker to me, lol. Without me ever knowing it, rapper Ace Hood was a fan of BGLH Marketplace and mentioned us in a feature he did for Ebony magazine in September 2022. 

8. Being recognized as a top clean brand by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics in October 2022. Professionally speaking, a lot of my job is screaming into the void about the profound benefits of shea butter 🤣. So for a big name in the clean beauty movement to recognize our work was deeply validating!  

9. Our products getting into their first surgeon’s office! Just last month our products got into their first surgeon’s office! They are now a recommended treatment by a plastic and breast cancer surgeon at Methodist Hospital in Indiana!

It’s been an amazing 9 years full of challenge, adventure and fun! I am so excited to see what the next 9 will bring! ~Leila
