Coconut Oil is Magical. ???? Here’s Why It’s in All of Our Butters

Coconut oil is having a moment right now. People swear by it for everything from cooking to skincare and it is the only ingredient that is currently in every one of our butters. (However we are releasing our first coconut oil- free line this year for those who need more options!) But why is it so amazing?

Coconut oil has long been used in other parts of the world (particularly India) for its incredible health and beauty benefits. And in tropical climates where the trees grow, coconuts have long been an integral part of local cuisines. 

So while the benefits of coconut oil might be fairly new to health and beauty enthusiasts in the US, its amazing benefits have been recognized for awhile.

But why is coconut oil so unique?

Coconut oil is one of nature’s most powerful skin emollients — the scientific term for a substance that softens and smooths.  One of the main ways coconut oil does this is by helping skin hold onto water. This is why one of the most popular uses of our butters is on damp skin right after a shower. Check it out;

But coconut oil is also incredible for hair. It’s one of the few oils that actually penetrates the hair shaft, providing strengthening, softening and moisture from the inside out!

The Beauty Brains science blog explains it like this;

“…Coconut oil is effective at treating hair damage. That’s because it’s one of the relatively few oils that are able to penetrate deep into the hair. Coconut oil is special because it has the right combination of molecular size and shape (it’s small and has straight line structure that allows it to slip into hair) and the right chemical structure (it’s derived from lauric acid which has an affinity for protein.) So while most conditioning oils (like silicones and mineral oil) just sit on top of that hair, coconut oil is literally able to work from the inside… Researchers found that coconut oil reduces damage both as a pre‐wash and post grooming treatment.”
