I’ve been hesitant to market BGLH Marketplace whipped butters as a styling product, because that’s not what I formulated them for. Styling products are designed to achieve a particular look or outcome and I saw our butters as more of a ‘hair food’ providing softness, health and moisture. Still in using the butters on my hair and my kids’ hair I noticed they packed a pretty solid styling punch. And when I did a recent roundup of customers explaining how BGLH Marketplace butters worked on their hair (you can read that here) quite a few mentioned using them as a styler.
So, I’ve compiled a list of 4 ways BGLH Marketplace whipped butters can be used for hair styling. I should mention too that I’ve experimented with the whipped sheas, cocoas, mangoes and blends and all do a really good job in my hair. For those familiar with the natural hair typing system, my curls are 4B/4C.
1. As a curl definer*
Now I put an asterisk here because the whipped butters will not give you ‘root to tip’ spiral curl definition many styling products promise. However I have found that the butters do a really good job of giving gentle definition to my curls and coils. Here is a picture of a wash and go I did with my whipped butters a year or so ago.
And how the butters define my daughter’s curls.
You will notice that they don’t really force definition into our hair, rather they lock in and enhance the curl patterns we already have.
2. For defined twistouts and braidouts
Now this is where the butters really do a great job of definition. If you use them to braid or twist your hair, you will have a super defined and shiny twistout or braidout when you are through! They provide really good hold.
3. To smooth hair back for buns and ponytails
I have found that a little bit of spritz, whipped butter and a soft brush are a perfect combo for smoothing hair back. It is a gentler alternative to alcohol-based gel.
4. To revive second, third, fourth, fifth, etc day hair
One of the most delightful things I’ve discovered is that BGLH Marketplace whipped butters are so absorbent they can be used daily for quite some time without any serious buildup. This is a departure from many hair products that can only be used two or three days in a row before they weigh hair down and make it icky. I have taken to spritzing my braids with Oyin Juices and Berries (my absolute favorite water based spritz!), rubbing some of my whipped butter in my palm and then smoothing it down the length of my braids. I do this almost daily and the combination brings back shine and bounce in my hair and keeps it from drying out.
