Natural Vlogger Spray Tans to Get Darker, Shares Before and After Video… YouTube Comments Go Nuts

A few months back people were astounded when actress Raven Symone shared that she used to tan to get darker. With all the talk of light skinned privilege in the black community, and studies that seem to confirm that it exists, many were confused about why she would ‘give up’ her light skin.

But it opened up a deeper discussion about how lighter skinned women often face accusations of not being black enough, and how deeper brown tones are often used as the representation of the ‘black is beautiful’ mindset.

Vlogger LaToya Chenelle spray tans and posted a video back in 2011 showing her skin before and after. Although it’s an older video, discussion in the comments has been spirited and ongoing.

Some commenters were supportive and understanding;

i’m about to use tanning lotion for the first time in my life! i’m biracial and i swear my skin tone makes no sense whatsoever. i look yellow rather than brown, so weird. hahaha. i got a really expensive all natural lotion that works without formaldehyde, we’ll see how it goes. wish me luck!!

People are so shocked to see a black woman actually ENJOY being black. I love when I come back from Miami or Belize with a deep bronze, I really feel I look like some type of goddess so this video was a big YESSSSSSSSS M’AM for me. I will be looking into this!

Judging by the negative comments, some folks don’t realize that dark-skinned women aren’t exempt from scars, uneven skin tone, stretch marks and other issues. Issues which only get worse as we age. I love my dark skin but at age 46 it’s not as smooth-looking and even as it once was. Spray tanning is not something I feel the need to do regularly but I’d absolutely do it for a special occasion when I want my skin to be appear even and glowing.

Others were straight up ignorant…

Eeeew! Stay light skinned, you look better!

made your skin worse, it doesn’t look natural.

Ewwww that made spray tanning look nasty. If your BLACK you can not TAN!!! Your BLACk!!!

As for LaToya Chenelle, she explained that she tans to even her complexion;

The spray tan helps to give an overall even complexion which i like to do from time to time. Its not everyone’s cup of tea.

I love getting darker in the summer months. I do it in the sun but not tanning, just being outside and soaking up the sun. I’m not for tanning or spray tanning but to each her own.

Black woman who tans/bronze here. I personally find when my skin is darker , it has a glow and look more even. I mainly do it ony legs tho. She looks great darker and lighter. JLO, Bey, Mariah Carey, Jada, Carnival Brazilian dancers and many more owe their glowing skin to tan lotion lol.
I am confused by people who call it “ugly” lol, Black people DO tan in the summer . What do they do when the sun come out, they avoid it at all cost because they do not want to be dark????

Lol..I for one was not “astounded”. I know a few black people who lay out to try to get darker. not unheardof. my uncle used to do it because people teased him about looking white. I have never tried purposely to tan but I do because I’m outside a lot. I have this weird shape on my back right now from a swimsuit. My friends are making fun of me lol.

Me and my sister have been tanning for years, accidentally. Lol, we thought it was sunblock with a pretty golden shimmer until her husband told us we were tanning.

I get like that sometimes when I want to be darker. But then I remember I am mixed with color. Color is beautiful and I will completely stick to that. I am mixed with African Americ Native American and Hispanic American.

I am light skinned and I darn sure tan in the summer and embrace my normal skin tone during the colder months..I personally don’t like tan lotion but she doesn’t look bad at all. People are so harsh lol

I’ve always wanted to be darker. I wouldn’t consider myself light skinned though. I would say cocoa. I worked on the highway one summer and got really really dark. It didn’t look good on me so i learned to play in the uniform i was issued. But yes, it did have to do with me not feeling Black enough. I guess i didn’t want my White ancestors showing. I wanted to be more purely African than a mash-up of different ethnicities.. I got over it..

As a dark skinned female who’s spent her life being ridiculed for something that was not my choice, I’m shocked that women feel they need to darken their skin up to feel like they fit in or will be accepted.
I hope this doesn’t seem mean, but in the picture she looks like C Thomas Howell in the movie Soul Man. I’ll have to wait until I’m free to watch the vid and find out more.

TBH the only thing i see wrong is that it doesnt look natural to me (however im not saying this in a shady way as that commenter seemed to) ‚her skin looks as weird as the caucasians who over tan. Maybe just lots of sunscreen and sitting out in the sun. My mother happens to be one of the people who aims to looks darker constantly!! i remember growing up she had a convertible and she stayed coming to pick me up from school with the top down a tank top on and short biker shorts (side note she never… Read more »

I love it! Been thinking about it for years but never trusted the products to work well on brown skin. In the last 25 years, I’ve had 3 tans. It’s not worth the burns and sun damage. LE now makes it impossible and I’ve just been walking around pale for the most part. I’m glad to see this video. I’m definitely going to look into spray tans!

There is nothing in the world that would make me want to be lighter. I look at dark skinned girls and bet they don’t know that they are the real beautiful women of the world. Melanin is the reason black people are such warm, forgiving, compassionate people. It is the reason we can sing and dance and have rhythm. We look at non color people and wonder how could they just kill, kill, kill people and not bat an eyelash. Melanin is what makes a person have feelings. It makes you human.

Thinking that the color of one’s skin makes you better in any way shape or form, is the definition of a racist mindset.

This is a very ignorant and racist comment. FYI, the color of your skin doesn’t determine your character. smh!

Suzar has a lot of articles on Melanin and a chapter in her book blacked through whitewash as well.

Kim, Kay, Athorn I am no where near racist but the three of you are ignorant. You should probably have three seats and pick up a book. I speak truth to power obtained by lies, theft and exploitation. In a world where black people are always supposed to be ashamed of our beautiful dark color and our beautiful natural hair I won’t apologize for anything that makes me beautifully black . Black girls proudly embrace all of you! I’ve never profited by or owned another person because the Melanin hormone that was given to me by my creator tells me… Read more »

I have medium toned skin and I’ve gone tanning because it brings the copper out in my skin. I’m no tin the sun for long, but whether we lay out in the sun or not we tan just like everyone else. I think the vlogger looks great both ways. That was a cool experiment.

I’ve been in the northeast for the past few years for school and everytime I come back home to the south my family’s like “Honey, what’s wrong with you? Are you sick? Are you tired? You look so pale!” My mom even said I looked like a biscuit, once. Rude, I know.… I’m so glad I’m working at a summer camp this summer. Every day, five days a week. we’re at the pool for 2 hours.…time to work on my tan! Everyone needs to realize that terms like “pale” and “dark” and “tan” are relative. Different communities have different meanings… Read more »

People seem to be ignoring her purpose in the tanning. She is not doing it because she just wants to be darker. Her tanning serves to even her skintone and that I get. People spend so much on creams trying to fade scars and pigmentation. Tanning is quicker. lol

Oh, I need some of what she’s using to cover the tiny black spots on my legs where the hair follicles are and stretch marks. I am dark brown in skin tone but I havent found a tanning cream that would work for my legs.

Seriously people?

I am normally milk chocolate, but when I go to the beach, I oil up and lay out alllllll day long, right along with the lighter people, because I prefer to be as dark as a black grape. All shades are beautiful, but I don’t find anything more striking than smooth, dark skin. Personally, I can’t get enough of the sun.

Yes, there are chocolate ladies out here who truly love and embrace their dark skin. Shocking, I know…

I was just in Cabo for my anniversary. I am a light skinned sister who has always adored my darker skinned sisters. I did my best to get as dark as I could before heading back to the pacific NW. I am jut mad it is starting to fade 🙁 Darker skinned sisters, you don’t know how beautiful you are. I always take the opportunity to go up to a dark skinned sister and tell her how beautiful she is and how much I love her skin. My sisters just beam whenever I do. Nothing like being reaffirmed by your… Read more »

Interesting article! I love going to the beach all year long but laying out in the summer months just feels good to my skin! I’m a nice pecan brown and I love my skin either way. I don’t tan intentionally but Vitamin D is good for you and the best way to get it is through sunlight so I wouldn’t be opposed to purposefully tanning in the sun simply for the health benefits of vitamin D. Does anyone else get sunburned? As a browner woman (darker if you prefer), I find that sometimes I burn rather than tan. It’s been… Read more »

I burn too but I notice it is around my nose and cheeks. I notice the peeling around my shoulders and chest area about a month later from vacation. I am dark skin and use SPF body lotion and face creams almost daily. So yeah we burn and peel too 🙂

I use Genes Vitamin E cream (yellow jar). It smooths out the peeling and gives a nice sheen on my skin. I use it on my face and body. It’s kind of heavy but it works for me. Use a body scrub to exfoliate then the cream.

In the summer I do try and get a shade or two darker, mostly to even my skin tone as well. I’m pretty dark already so it doesnt take much. I personally wouldn’t use lotion or spray tan or anything, it’s not that serious to me. But I definitely enjoy the sun and dont mind getting a little darker.

My mom is like this. She’s light but she’s always loved dark skin. Her skin is senstive now but when she was a kid, she used to burn herself up in the sun. And not just black people want to be darker or like dark skin. My ex was a romanji gypsy with a tan complexion. He loved dark girls. For him, the darker, the better. Its all a matter of preference which is why I think God made us all different:)

Wow I never knew people actually do this. I am dark skinned and been ridiculed my whole life about it. Plus I have seen so many people who use whitening creams to even out their skin tone although it ends up making them light and is damaging. I never knew there are lighter toned black women that want to be darker to even out their skin tones. Interesting topic. Learn something new everyday.

well, back in the 90s I worked with a light skin (Trisha Campbell complexion) sister who use to go to tanning salons to darken her skin. The method in the post of course is a lot safer. Having said this though, I think we need to sop focusing so much on our shades and appreciate that there are many different hues of black.

Honestly I am not bothered by it. As long as she isn’t using UV lights, which is pretty damaging to the skin, she can spray tan away.

Interesting! I get what she’s saying about uneven skin tone, though, so it makes sense. I’m a medium brown I guess so in the summer I do get a lot darker. But I have to remark on something: There are a few people on here who are saying they lay out in the sun to the point of burning, and that is not good. When people with dark skin get skin cancer it is more likely to be malignant in part because darker people think that they can ignore signs of damage just because they were already dark. Burning causes… Read more »

Her skin her choice. I’m mixed, I love how my skin looks when I get a tan. Not sure about spraying though. But, as I said, her skin her choice. If she feels good about how she looks then great, not enough women do. I’m happy she found something which gives her confidence.

I am “Black” and not light and I have done spray tanning for beach vacations to even out the overall color. Not a big deal. Not everyone worships fair skin. The woman at my salon said that many Latinos and Blacks tanned. I tan when I go into the sun, why not help nature along?
