Brandy Reveals her Fro on Instagram!

• Jul 11, 2013

Brandy is considered a black beauty icon for the signature braid extension styles she rocked in the 90s and early 2000s, but ironically, we’ve rarely (if ever) seen her natural hair. Now, with the help of celebrity stylist (and LA Hair star) Kim Kimble, she’s showing the world what she’s working with. And it is quite impressive. She posted this photo on her Instagram account today, with the caption

Thank you @kimblehaircare for my Afro puff!! We finally took the risk!! #bighairdontcare #afropuffpuff #brownskin #glowwwrraayy

brandy

Get it Brandy!

*Update*
Brandy also uploaded the following photo with the caption

Hey hey hey @niecynash1- my photographer! #afropuffpuff #bighairdontcare #bohemianchic #freepeople

You are on a site called black girl long hair. I’m sure alot of people who frequent this site care.

Ms. B

Obviously, YOU do! You were the 1st person to run up here and say something so you care the MOST! Grow up…

Oh please

Stephanie

I kinda agree, who cares…

Its not like she’s a natural supporter. She’s unbeweavebale just like most of her celebrity brethren.

Look at me, I’m black! gtfoh…
I’m tired of these, yeah I wear a weave but look at me when I take it out pictures. If they’re gonna go there, then… take off the fake eyelashes, nails, makeup… undo the boob jobs, tummy tucks and botox as well… Post a pic of that ish.…

Her only saving grace is that she’s probably happy her edges are growing back.

…and now my soap box is crushed, lol

I know Kim Kimble does a lot of weave so is that Brandy’s real hair or is it simply a “new look” brought to us by some additions? Either way, I like the look.

Mai

I can believe it’s her real hair, but being that it’s Kim Kimble, I think it’s in between the weave or braid extensions. To be honest, I even question if Kim Kimble really does know how to do natural hair. Whenever I get a magazine like Seventeen, Marie Claire, Cosmo, etc. and there is an article on natural hair, Kim Kimble is always the one giving advice for women who are transitioning or want to go natural. The weird thing is though, she gives really blanketed “natural hair” advice; her advice could be used for any texture of hair. It’s… Read more »

Like wow, she looks my age! And i’m 19!!!
Men black people, we’re blessed men! Sheett!! XD

Though not gonna lie, the celebrity instagraming natural hair “trend”, is getting out of hand. I know you want your fans (and the world) to accept you but damn, if you wanna rock your natural hair! Rock it! Don’t post a random pic or wait for us to tell you.

'Quel

Right! Shit, if it’s #naturalhairdontcare, then don’t care and rock that shit in public without a wig! You gets no props for rockin yo natural hair UNDER a wig. So, have a seat…

ema

You know some people went mad here as soon as somebdoy mentioned in an article that weaves are not really a “protective styling”. And all of the weave-naturalistas went angry because of the statement. So why should Brandy rock her own natural her, when even the naturalistas on this blog refuse to wear their own hair out?

'Quel
Guest

For some reason, i kinda doubt this is her hair—i guess just because of all the pics i’ve seen of her with like, no edges under her weaves. But, I mean, if it is, then more power to her—glad she grew some hair. LOL.

abi
Guest

I doubt that this is her hair cause in the pst she usually suffer from edges and seem having thin hair so…

Michele

Everyone is commenting on her edges, you can’t even see them in the pic, they’re covered! So that may very well be her hair!

Ugonna Wosu

Brandy has edges. There were recent pics of her with new braids, and her edges still looked healthy.

bree
Guest

Why is it so hard for people to believe black women can have long thick hair…if the braids were ripping her edges out, I would like to think that it has grown back, since she stopped wearing braids for years! Lots of celebrities are natural now and have healthier, longer hair

Jack
Guest

Cause it’s Brandy and her lack of edges are notorious.

K
Guest

LOLOLOLOLOL! heck yeah!

Come on, son!

If we were talking about anybody else, we may believe it’s not a weave but it’s weavemaster Brandy we’re talking about here!

For what it’s worth, I think her wig is cute, but not seeing her hairline makes it look even more wiggy.

Cloe R

She’ll get her IG numbers up then fall back to hiding that gorgeous hair! #boo

Dame914

That’s not her hair. When she rocked box braids you could tell her hair was thin. How thick your hair is is determined by genetics so unless she underwent gene therapy, that is a wig.

I really don’t get the point of celebrities doing this if they’re still never going to wear their hair out.

Ms. B

Sigh… Once again one of my favorite natural hair sites had become over run with hateful, negative black women who can’t wait to come into a thread and say something mean and questions whose hair is real and blah blah blah. If you truly don’t care, then why comment? Please stop with the ‘I’m just expressing my opinion’ also. You know you’re being hateful and I believe you get some perverse enjoyment out of it because you’re a very unhappy person. @Ms.B where are the hateful, negative women saying mean and hateful things? How are the comments stereotypical of angry black women? I read the comments and I don’t see anything hateful, mean or negative.…Oh and I agree with you Brandi does look great as always 🙂

Nubiahbella

Talk about a stereotype, a woman who happen to be black doesn’t agree with agree she sees and she’s labelled as hater, jealous, negative and very unhappy person etc.…

Are Black women not allowed to have different opinions? Have people been on white, non — “black” blogs , some will be surprise by the comments there and who is very hateful lol!

For the record no one said Brandy didn’t look great

BeautyisMiree
Guest

This is why I don’t get the natural hair community. You complain when a black celebrity doesn’t show her real hair and when she shows her natural hair it’s automatically a wig or she added extensions to her hair. I’m proud of Brandy’s hair and when you’re under the pressure of having light skin and long straight hair. She’s been true to herself and culture.

Not all of ya’ll are like this, but some of ya’ll need to fall back.

Tabatha

I agree. Hair is hair. She was just showing how big it is. I do the same thing when I take my hair out of braids I even show my friend’s the shrinkage after I wash it. It doesn’t mean I’m not proud of my hair should I choose to straighten it. Its just showing people my hair. Its my choice just like its her choice. We are the hardest on each other and its just not necessary. We should be happy that its not falling off her head. Brandy is beautiful no matter what texture or style her hair… Read more »

Kim Kimble can do some hair now, shoot if I had the money I’d let her hook me up! lol

Deanna

Well technically, you can’t really see her edges, so it’s possible to have thinning edges and long hair. I think it’s a great style real or fake. She’s promoting the beauty of naturally textured hair and that should be celebrated.

Tatiana
Guest

The only thing that makes me sad about it is that they will never wear their natural hair in public. So what is the point?
But still, I love her look!

Robin
Guest

I don’t understand why this can’t be her hair. When my hair was permed it was soft and fine. Since I stopped perming 5 years ago, it’s thick and not just the roots.

Also, I rarely wear my hair straightened but when I do, I will snap a picture to show how proud I am of my healthy hair. Why can’t celebs do the same. Goodness, why can’t we ever be positive.

No one commented on her “we finally took the risk” comment. What the heck is so risky about wearing your natural hair? I understand that for practical reasons celebrities don’t wear their natural hair out all the time(constant heat) but I don’t understand why every once in a while they don’t rock their hair on the red carpet. I don’t mean this for me but for the young black girls who look up to these women. It would be nice if they can see themselves reflected onscreen and on the red carpet the way God made them. When I first saw the entry, my immediate thought was ‘aww shame, I hope her edges came back fully…’ and that was it… but even though Indie got so many disapproval thumbs, I’m with her. So funny how the natural hair trend is drawing celebs out of the woodwork who want to remain relevant & sport this natural look/that natural look at various times; quick snaps on the run via instagram or twitter– like ‘oops! just a peek! teehee!’ So I take it this is another weave? What most fail to realize, celebs wear weaves, wigs extensions due to the stress that would otherwise be put on their hair. Roles require a certain look and it isn’t always feasible to wear hair in it’s natural state. Just think, if she had to have her hair blow dried or flat ironed to maintain a look for a part she’s filming everyday. Guess what, she’d have seriously damaged tresses. It bothers me that others are so quick to call out celebs for not sporting their natural. Raven Symone, Viola Davis, Kim Coles, Chrisette Michele and even Nicole Ari Parker… Read more »

It bothers me why their natural hair can’t be part of of their role…non-black women and women with naturally straight hair aren’t expected to wear weaves and wigs to protect their hair. More often than not they wear their hair as is and have it styled a little. I could see wearing a wig for the period film, but there is no reason why it’s necessary to wear wigs and weaves to protect hair for everyday, run of the mill, mainstream blockbuster movie roles, it’s unnecessary styling. Our hair is in such bad condition ’cause we do sooooo much to… Read more »

Actually almost all Actresses regardless of race wear weave during filming. whether it be for volume, length, change of texture, color etc. It has more to do with the role being played and less about the color of skin

Yeah, and while a lot of celebs may be natural, the natural curlies tend to straighten their hair. And the reasonin is probably that it’s easier to manage. Which, to be honest, is probably true. Examples are Taylor Swift, Emmy Rossum, Nicole Kidman. I think Nina Dobrev and Julia Roberts too. There are probably a lot more, but these are the ones I can come up with immediately.

deb

Yeah right, if they wanted to, they could wear their natural hair to events or while living their regular lives. We’ve already seen a handful of black female celebs that do this. Viola Davis, Teyonah Paris, Nicole Ari Parker and Janelle Monae are all recent examples. I mean, it seems like the only time their real hair gets to breathe is between removing and adding a new sew in and they then snap an Instagram pic to document it. Now I’m not saying they HAVE to wear their natural hair out even a few times, it is absolutely their own… Read more »

My sentiments exactly deb. I understand wearing wigs/weaves during movies and things like that, shoot most white actresses wear them too, but ALL the damn the time, really?? It’s like you never see these women’s real hair, with a few exceptions, unless they are instagraming it or putting it on facebook during the time that they are getting their hair done. Thanks for your reply deb — let me just say that as a natural sista for more than 10 years now (7 of them locs). I personally know that natural hair requires a lot of maintenance, patience and proper care for growth. Celebs have little time for this, that’s why they have a team of people (makeup, stylists, hair stylists etc.) to help them out. I applaud any celeb who rocks their natural mane. Big ups to them. I have really thick hair — and I’ve seen Brandy with the braids. I love the style but that is NOT her hair. I can tell. SHE isn’t even claiming it is her real hair. She is talking about the risk of trying a new style. That is why she is thanking the stylist for the new look. But it is hot!

Why does this site keep reporting celebs hair as their own when it is not explicitly stated (or obvious)? So annoying. Just writing ‘we assume so’ makes such a difference.

I think most people can believe it’s her hair. But the reality is that there are many believable looking wigs and extension out there and that’s alright too. So with that said, most of us would prefer not to assume that it is a wig/extensions or assume that it is her hair that grows from her scalp. And quite frankly, I’m not even sure that it even matters. I think the issue is when she stated,“We finally took the risk!! #bighairdontcare #afropuffpuff #brownskin #glowwwrraayy”. Honestly though, when I think about, I like Brandy alot, but she always struck me as someone who didn’t have a very high level of self esteem. I remember when she had her reality show with her family, everthing was all about them, especially with her mom and Ray-Jay, even though Brandy was the star of the show. She looks beautiful, her hair also looks amazing. Why cant we just give her a compliment and not tear her apart. sometimes naturals can be so judgemental and critical towards other women. it makes no sense at all. we are no better than those who are not natural. how she chooses to wear her hair is not any of my concern, but i know how to compliment someone.

I’ve resisted commenting on this site until now. Whatever pressures we non-celebrities face to fit some euro centric ideal of beauty is multiplied 1000 times for black (and indeed non-black) celebrities. Brandy has spoken about her body issues- from anorexia to being dark skinned to so-called ethnic facial features so to her coming out with her natural hair (or kinky weave or whatever) probably is a big deal. What a shame that her tentative reach out has been met with some quite bitchy comments ( of the who cares, I wear my natural hair out every day variety) #getyourheadright

Nothing wrong with trying other styles but, when many black women start to think that anything other than your natural hair is better, we have a huge self esteem issue. So you’re saying because she has fine hair she isn’t capable of having long hair? If so that’s ridiculous the texture of your hair doesn’t define how long or short it will be.

Fake or not it still looks pretty good…I just wish they (we) would be honest with it. Again, it is her choice.

It’s cute either way (fake or real)! I’m more concerned with her weight. She looks extremely tiny & the bones in her back are a tad bit scary! As women we need to be concerned with our entire body, the hair is just a crown! Lets all take natural to the next step!

True! She does look a little too thin. #keepthemeatnotthefatbutdonmtgettoboneyeitherwhoa!

Did she ever say it was her hair? (Honest question.) I wonder if bloggers see them with what looks like natural hair, and just assume that its real, or that they are trying to make us believe it is. She could have just wanted a kinky hair weave, a lot of people who are non celebs do it all the time.

First off why are people being so critical on the “real& fake” aspect of the style she is wearing…nowhere does she state that this is her REAL NATURAL HAIR it only says that on the title of this article so therefore you are being mislead by the publisher.…secondly why are so many stating that she is uncapable of achieving a big voluptuous fro? are you her stylist?, yall act as if you know her and her hair personally

Looks like my texture. I think that it’s real.

I don’t understand why people are SO negative. We don’t know these “celebrities” personally so we don’t know what they what type or length hair they are capable of growing. Let’s just support each other.

Aint not way in hell. I remember Brandy back in the 90’s and you can tell by the braids she use to wear that her real hair underneath was nowhere close to being thick… That’s a bunch of bs… If it’s a wig than let it be, but only a fool would think all that is hers.…

Looks good to me, real or not. I find it encouraging that she says, “finally took the risk’ like she had been afraid to rock that style and finally went with it. Also, people saying she is too skinny: this is what healthy looks like. Americans can be forgetful of that, I think.

People can be so negative. How do any of you know that’s not her hair? Where you in the salon when the weave came out? I was surprise at how much hair I had when I went natural because it was always so fine. My hair is thicker than I thought because of what I had been doing to it. Now that I’m taking better care of it my natural hair is thicker and stronger than ever. Maybe, just maybe Brandy’s hair is in better health than in the past!

The ones with negative comments, y’all are hilarious…Let me break it down to you. Black peoples can grow hair down to their asses if they wanted to. Our hair is more fragile, so we have to take extra care of it. When our hair is constantly in protective style like braids or a weave etc. and is properly taken care of, our hair WILL GROW INCREDIBLY LONG. To the person who said her hair cannot be that thick and full, you don’t know what you are talking about. Or maybe i misunderstood what you were trying to say.….

Why can’t it be real? I have to say it’s annoying when people see me in my fro, feeling fierce and then (at my husband’s job for example) some guy thought it was a wig, I said excuse you why would it have to be a wig? My husband was like man if you could see how long it takes her to get all that hair combed out and then if she’s having the same style the next day she sleeps in some weird position so she won’t mess it up or how about she has to fix the top… Read more »

That comment about free people bohemian chic being a weave type made me cry laughing.. its a clothing line.. I too have very fine hair but I have a lot of it and lots of times I dont feel like taking my plaits down so I wear a big afro wig that looks like mine.. The only time people who know me know that I’m wearing the wig is because it has reddish blonde highlights and my own hair doesnt..

I’ve always admired Brandies cultural look. My Uncle sat all his nieces down when I was 12 and said, I better not catch anyone of you with perms in your hair! He said we are beautiful just as we are natural. Never put a perm in my hair. To this day I remember how profound and beautiful it was for a black man my Uncle to tell me I am beautiful just as I am, Natural Beauty.
Brandy looks so beautiful natural, I hope she shows more of her natural beauty!
