V: My name is Victoria, and I’m from Spring Valley, New York. I’m currently a student at Binghamton University and a proud member and President of the organization Ladies Owning their Curls, Kinks, and Straights (L.O.C.K.S), a group that encourages self love through confidence in one’s hair.
Why did you make the decision to go natural?
V: The main event that pushed me to go natural was watching an episode of Tyra Banks that featured a relaxed girl who was thinking about going natural. There was a panel of both relaxed women and natural women, and they were going back and forth stating reasons why she should either continue to relax or transition to natural hair. At the time I was just slightly interested in going natural, but after hearing some of the reasons from both sides I was fully convinced that there was no NEED for me to stay relaxed, and the health and style benefits of going natural outweighed staying relaxed by a lot. I transitioned for 14 months, and I’ve been fully natural for 2 years. So overall I have 3 years and 2 months’ worth of natural hair growth.
How would you describe your texture?
V: My texture is predominantly 4a, with a 4b/4c crown. I believe I have fine strands along the perimeter, but mostly medium sized strands throughout my head, and very wiry/coarse strands in the crown. The density of my hair is medium I’d say, but extremely voluminous when it wants to be that it almost looks dense. I wish I could say my hair is well behaved but it’s not! (lol) It tangles easily, and sometimes I have problems with moisture, but overall I absolutely love my texture.
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
V: I pretty much protective style all year around. If I’m not protective styling I have my hair out in a braid-out. I typically style my hair in mini-twists and buns. This helps me with moisture retention, length retention, and gives me time to focus on other things rather than tending to my hair. All I need for my styling, no matter what the style, is a spray bottle with plain water, my Qhemet Biologics Burdock Root Butter, and castor oil.
What does wash day look like for you?
V: On wash day I start out by finger detangling my hair with water and coconut oil and putting my hair in 8 chunky twists. I then wash my hair with DHD H2O Anti-Itch Shampoo and keep it in the twists for the whole wash session. After shampooing, I take down each of the 8 twists one by one, and slather them in castor oil. Then on top of the castor oil, I put Aubrey Organics Glycogen Protein Balance Deep Conditioner. I let this sit for about an hour and rinse. In the final step I put Kinky Curly Knot Today in my hair as my leave-in conditioner, and layer a tiny bit of castor oil on top. In this step I change each of the 8 twists into 8 braids, or sometimes more.
Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style.
V: Lately my go-to hairstyle has been a large puff towards the back of my head. I just unbraid or untwist my hair and pull it back with one of those long scrunchies.
How do you combat shrinkage?
V: I never ever let my hair shrink! Every single night I make sure my hair is stretched in braids or twists even on wash day. If I let it shrink the tangles and knots would be ridiculous.
What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
V: The crown of my head definitely needs more attention than the rest. My scalp is always slightly sore in that area, and the hair there always seems super dry and weak. It’s strange because that section has the thickest hair strands, but it’s also most susceptible to breakage. I massage that area of my head on a daily basis.
What are 2 do’s for your texture?
V: Protective styling and keeping it stretched.
What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
V: Combing on dry hair and over-manipulation.
