Can Diet, Hair Oils or Supplements Really Speed Up Hair Growth?

There are many naturals who want to grow long hair. Many want to do this fast!! Today, I would like to discuss the science of long hair. I have just learned now that nothing is out of bounds for naturals from using KY Gel for moisture (not a bad idea) to using birth control and yeast cream to increase hair growth (not a great idea).

Science by its very nature is not static, what I say today may change in future. I can, however, report that currently NOTHING can accelerate hair growth. To define this better, I mean that nothing can make your hair grow 2 inches in one month if it is not capable itself of doing this (My husband’s hair actually does grow at just over 2 inches a month in the summer — I’m responsible for the hair cuts and the aim is to go as short as possible so I don’t have to cut it again — never works ).

Can a change in diet change the growth rate?

Actually studies say that changes to a normal diet do not affect growth rate. This means increasing or using supplements when you are already having a healthy diet will not affect your hair growth rate . In fact changes to hair growth are most commonly seen with extreme starvation (Clin Exp Dermatol;27(5):396–404, 2002).

Are supplements not useful?

Supplements can be useful, for example iron and amino acid L‑Lysine can help with hair shedding (not growth). However excessive vitamin E can lead to slower hair growth and excessive vitamin A can lead to hair loss. (Clin Exp Dermatol;27(5):396–404, 2002)

actually hair growth is thought to be a “side effect” to taking Astaxanthin, a super antioxidant.

i take it once or twice a week, but not for hair growth.

i try not to monitor hair growth. i just rely on a good diet and exercise. my hair has always grown well. i cut about 2–3 inches off at the end of august and i’ve got back at least a inch since then.

Wow, I guess I feel like…at this point, stop worrying about it, leave it alone (except trims lol) and it will grow. That’s what guys do and they usually have faster growing hair, nails and better eyelashes than women!! Smh not fair lol. When you want something too bad, it can elude you at times, and that’s the attitude I’ve taken with my hair.

Years ago I took silica for hair growth. What I noticed was that my hair didn’t grow faster, but the strands themselves were noticeably thicker in diameter. Of course this was only at the root; it’s not like the silica fattened up the entire strand…but if I’d kept taking it I might conceivably have grown a thicker (stranded) head of hair. I stopped taking it because, like you said, Jc, it’s not good to medicate yourself if you’re not unwell. Another thing I noticed when taking silica was that my nails grew in faster and stronger. I have always had… Read more »

I disagree. If your hair grows, I feel supplements will assist the growth. I stopped taking biotin due to a breakout this summer as I am not prone to acne. I found HairFinity on YouTube, ordered it and have had nothing but success. I BC’d in August after 19months of transitioning; my hair was bob/ ear length. Now it is shoulder length when stretched. But…my hair would have grown anyway I do believe the HairFinity sped up the process. You have to know what you and your hair are capable of. To MotorCityMoxie (I miss you on YouTube!!!), but I… Read more »

How do u know whether it sped up the growth or not? You don’t know if your hair would have grown to that length without it

I have to agree.

Supplements just fill in the holes and gaps in your diet. If your diet doesn’t have a certain level of something, taking supplements can help bring that level up and you will see improved hair growth results (of course depending on what the mineral/vitamin is). But if your diet is already balanced, supplements won’t do anything.

Supplements will supplement your health and hair growth, but not “speed” it up. Nothing speeds up hair growth, if we’d stop getting out of that mindset that our hair will grow faster with a miracle kinda product, we’d be able to enjoy our hair at every stage. Hair growth isn’t everything. Once you leave your hair alone, you will notice growth, but measuring the growth, relying on pills to “speed” up the process, etc. will only just amount to unnecessary frustration and high hopes.

I totally agree with this article. However, the truth of the matter is that most people don’t have a perfectly healthy diet… so supplements would help most of us grow our hair. I found the comment on vitamin A to be very helpful. I wonder how much is considered an excess though.

I have taken hair supplements that are supposed to accelerate hair growth, and I noticed no difference. The supplements I took contained MSM. The fastest I ever saw my hair grow was when I was pregnant.

Greetings ladies, I have taken some and they helped my hair grow out alot in my opinion. However, my teen daughter it has grown her hair out as much as mine. I guess it just depends, but I would say it is worth the try.

I have a friend who gets her hair relaxed faithfully. When I first met her she had what is considered long hair. But it’s gotten several inches shorter over time and I noticed that she no longer shows her edges leading me to believe her edges have retreated. I know she was going to a “Dominican” salon and I’ve heard about their practice of super hot blow dryer with the brushing technique. Now my friend is saying she is going to start taking the vitamins the Dominican girls told her they take to grow their hair. It’s not exactly weird… Read more »

When my diet was deficient, biotin helped A LOT. But now that I eat better, it grows about the same with or without the pills. I’m trying to determine if that period where it seemed to help was the placebo effect.
Good article!

NOBODY MEASURES THEIR HAIR GROWTH <—- is a pretty bold statement and false because some people do. I did with something I tried and I saw results, the results were that the particular growth aide I was using didn’t speed up my growth. But what may work for one woman may not for the other. I’m not knocking anyones growth or hwo they get it.
I will not be causing any head injuries though to promote growth LOL.

I’ve been on Fast Grow for almost 3 full months but because my hair is in a protective styles I’m not really sure and to be far i didn’t measure my hair for consecutive months before starting the hair vit, after the first month on them I saw an inch in grow, but honestly that might be around my norm, never have had a problem growing hair What I can say for SURE is that my nails grew quickly in the first two weeks and I’ve been able to KEEP my nails these three months and I constantly am heavy… Read more »

Astaxanthin has been discussed by Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Joe Mercola and recommended by many health experts, including myself. I take 12 milligrams every morning. I’d like to clarify one myth now: Krill supplements contain trace amounts of astaxanthin, not nearly what you need to achieve the therapeutic benefits discussed today. Here are five reasons to take astaxanthin supplements every day:.:-^

As an essential amino acid, lysine is not synthesized in animals, hence it must be ingested as lysine or lysine-containing proteins. In plants and bacteria, it is synthesized from aspartic acid (aspartate);;”^

well if you have a healthy diet, you are consuming biotin and they are unnecessary because biotin is what would be the active ingredient in them.

I think eating right helps to have healthier hair which means better growth.
I have fine hair and had bald spots at the nape area.

I started drinking vegetables + fruits homemade smoothies everyday(kale, spinach, wheat protein, banana, berries…
And my hair i’ve never been this healthier and they grew! Not like crazy but i see the difference. And no more bald spots!
