Janelle Monae is the New Face of CoverGirl

I see Janelle making moves 🙂 The 26-year-old “Tightrope” singer is the new face of CoverGirl. Pictures and videos from her first photoshoot have been released showing Monae rocking her signature bouffant. I gotta admit though, I kinda hope they transform her look a bit in further shoots. With all that hair she’s hiding, there is SO MUCH potential for extreme natural hair porn 🙂 Ladies, what do you think of Monae’s look?! Click below for more photos and video.

  1. You go girl.Nice hairstyle you stay unique and be unique cause, you aint tryna be a copie of beyonce or rihanna stay true to urself

  2. She is absolutely beautiful! Great skin. Pretty smile. I love her pompadours. I only wonder . . . how does she keep her edges from thinning while constantly wearing her hair pulled back? If I did that with my fine hair, my edges would be see through.

  3. YaaaaY! I’m so glad that they chose Janelle. She’s beautiful and her style is so chic! Her makeup is perfect and I saw a picture of her in a dress somewhere online. She looked amazing and though she had to fight for her look, I too hope that she will switch up her look a bit but don’t let them change you too much, Girl!!!

  4. Love her style and would like to see her try new ones with her natural tresses. She is a natural beauty who does not have to flaunt skin to feel good about herself FIRST. I am pleased to see that Cover Girl editors will change the look from the European look (long straight blonde or black tresses) …been a long time coming but change did come.

time and long fine combing sometimes but the finnal results are amazing i feel good.

  6. one year later with some struggle at time, i really love what my hair looks like.

  7. i don’t get people who think she should change.

sade is one of the bestselling artists ever and she hasn’t changed ish.

janelle is not beyonce or rihanna. she’s not getting by because of her weave or her ability to shake her arse.

i can’t stand that people have this expectation of women.

    1. ^^^^^^THIS^^^^^^^
because you know the minute she changed up, she’d be getting shade for that. listen to her tightrope remix. She says people always say, “why don’t she change her clothes,” and she says, “No one was complaining the 3 times I appeared in VOGUE!” Classic Beauty.

  8. I have always admired her skin. Whenever I see her perform or the like it reminds me of porcelain lol. She is a great face for covergirl.

  9. Love Jannelle Monae. Perfect choice.

While I would love to see her add a little variety behind her style I get the concept of why she’s doing it. So over these over-sexed “bad girl” celebrities (did I make my shade to obvious?). Jannelle is a beautiful and attractive woman and we know that with ALL of her clothes on. Which would make if she does wear something different, that much more special.

  10. How is she a style icon? She always looks the same. Same hair, same clothes, color choice… etc. I get that she’s trying to define herself but I don’t find anything particularly extraordinary about her though I’m not tryin to knock her. I’m glad there’s more realistic people breaking out than the fake nicki minaj, the press addicted Kim K. and the sex icons like Rihanna and Keri Hilson.

  11. Lovely picture it is a shame they have airbrushed her skin tone to a lighter shade. She looks unreal.

I like her hair in the 3rd picture with hump at the back and front.

  12. She is a gorgeous girl. But why must she wear the same outfit every time. There is a difference between “signature” and uniform.

    1. Interestingly, Janelle has said that her look is based on the idea of a uniform, so that the tux/suit is kind of her equivalent of the uniforms she saw her working-class parents wear when she was growing up.

      1. But she also said that she wear black & white because she “sees in color” Which one is it?

  13. wow, she and i are the same age. WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE?!
Anyway, I’m really happy for her. She’s truly a beautiful and classy woman that stays true to her creative vision. I know she had to fight for the look she has going for her now because the industry always wants to sexualize female artists. Go Janelle! Fighting!

  14. I was such a huge fan of her look in the begining but now I am just bored with it. the ties, the jacket. there is one pic of her in a dress, boy do I wish i had it, she was drop dead gorgeous even if her hair was still in the same style. I do think it is a FABULOUS pic. she is an inspirattion to a lot of young women and not just because of her hair and clothes and that is what is most imoportant. She is talented and very intelligent. Role models like her is what we need to see.

  15. YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😀 I hope that don’t mess with her hair! I like it just the way it is!

    1. I meant to say that, “I hope they don’t try to mess with her hair too much, i.e., trying to straighten it out!” We need more celebrities representing for black women, who love our natural tresses.

  16. My natural hair obsessed’s first thought was “Ooh, wonder if she’ll do an ad w/ her hair down!!!” :->

  17. This is totally off topic, but I have to say, I cannot stand Curly Nikki’s site. It is totally sanitized; any comments that aren’t kissing her ass are deleted. She is in bed with relaxer companies and these dumb ass sheep still turn out for her events and visit her site, not being analytical enough to see the disconnect!

    1. Really? Do we have to bring that sort of trolling b.s. here? If you want to vent, do it on a topic-appropriate post that probably isn’t being read by several of those “dumb ass sheep”.
There is ALWAYS one angry reader who’s got to take the good feeling down a few notches….

        1. And so, you haven’t seen any relaxers ads on this site or others? FOH. I bet that you are just mad that she didn’t print one of the articles you sent and now your bitter. You sure sound like it. good day to you.

  18. Her music may not be my type, but I really like her persona and I am happy they chose someone a little different as a covergirl!! Yay naturals!! The only downside is the ABUSE of photoshop…she looks plastic…but beautiful still lol

  19. Yay, I’m so happy for her. I just wish now magazines like Essence will catch on and feature amazing women like her and Corrine Bailey Rae!

  20. I never liked that front poof/bang thing that she and other naturals seem to always do. However, she is a beautiful woman.

  21. I am a HUGE fan of Janelle, and I almost fell outta my chair when I saw her as the face of CG. When I see her I see myself and that speaks VOLUMES. Beyonce and Latifah are beautiful women and I am in NO WAY knocking them, but we sisters come in a MULTITUDE of styles and varieties!

I know many are tired of her signature look but I think one of the great things about her and her style choice is that she is OBVIOUSLY a woman that is in complete control of her image, and in an industry where so many compromise their morals and sell their souls her standing her guns is a breathe of fresh air.

  22. This woman is ultra hip and gorgeous so I don’t see why they have to go OTT with photoshop. Gives her an almost plastic look.

  23. SHE IS GORGEOUS!!
beautiful, way to go cover girl, thanks you for featuring Janelle Monae, thank you!

  24. congratulations to Ms. Monae! – I think the retro look is still trending quite a bit, so its likely that her signature style will be “on play” for a while. Its a nice change, likely a marketing strategy to increase sales among naturalistas, but nevertheless, a good decision.
Not sure if I would buy covergirl products, but at least I would raise an eyebrow now 🙂

  25. She is so gorgeous and I just love her sense of style. Been trying to mimic her hair styles and just fail :(.

  26. Gorgeous AND classy. I love the second pic. I hope she branches out a bit from the “Men in Black” wear, but avoids the hoochie look that many female celebs are gravitating towards.
She reminds me of a young Anita Baker.
    Go Janelle!

  27. I love her!!! Girl crush alert!! lol. She is an amazing artist. She is really unique but relatable. Glad covergirl made that choice! 🙂

  28. I read about this yesterday and instantly became excited! She is a beautiful woman who happens to be a naturalista!!!!

I know that her updo is her signature look but I also hope she wants to wear her kinks down as well in some of the commercials and ads…

  29. Good!! Time for change from Beyonce and Latifa.. Both beautiful women, but I am happy to see change.
