How did you and your fiancé meet?
B: My fiancé and I meet 7 yrs ago at a Ghostface Killah concert at the House of Blues Chicago. (can’t wait to tell our children that one… lol)
To make what is an incredibly long story short, 6 years ago I met an amazing man. This God sent man not only supported my natural hair journey but encouraged me to big chop my over fried, over dyed, damage, limp lifeless “natural” hair (he was actually the one that cut my hair for me). Well, any man like that I had to hang on to, and a year and a ½ ago he proposed and of course I said; HELL to the YES!
When is the big day?
B: We’re marrying August 18, 2012 at the Promontory Point (where we had our first date and where he proposed) in Chicago’s, Hyde Park neighborhood.
How did you decide your hairstyle for the engagement shoot?
B: Our engagement photos were shot in the beautiful Pilsen neighborhood. Initially, I struggled with what natural hair style to wear for the shoot. I’ve been able to retain a pretty good length and I thought of straightening it. You know, to show off my length but Zaid (my fiancé) encouraged me to rock my super coily fro and the pictures turned out beautifully.
How did you achieve the look?
B: The style for the shoot was a double strand twist out. The day before I washed my hair with black soap and deep conditioned with Jason’s Aloe Vera conditioner. I have extremely porous curly 4b and 4c hair. My hair eats moisture. After deep conditioning, I fingered combed, making sure to pull out any knots and proceeded to double strand. The morning before the shoot, I pulled out my twist out and hydrated with a combination of olive oil, aloe vera gel and water for a full curlier look.
Thanks for sharing your gorgeous photos Brittney! You can find the lovely bride-to-be on Facebook.

Lovely pictures and a great story! We need to see more stories like this because if they media hype is to be believed, then a.- black men hate black women and b.- black men REALLY hate black women with natural hair.

lovely.
Breathtaking all around.
Because you just HAD to throw that out there right? Ignorant and rude.
Huh?
^^^ was meant for Laa above me.
yeah, it was a response to ignorant comment. Wish I could delete my reply lol.
There was a comment earlier made around 6:36am I believe that has now been removed, because a person had made a nasty comment about the man being gay. That’s why you see the time of the comments are now off because we were responding at that time when it was originally there. Hope this helps to better clarify the info :).
ETA @ Hairysituation to your ?
Im glad I didnt see that comment. lol!!
Thank you. Some of us had no idea what was going on.
Their a beautiful couple, congrats on the upcoming marriage next year. Also that man does not look gay at all “SMH”.
the pictures are beautiful! Congrats to you both!
love their engagement photos, especially the first one.
What a beautiful couple! Congratulations on your upcoming wedding, and all the best in your married life!
I don’t usually comment but they are gorgeous and +1 for the doing their shoot in Pilsen. I used to live there when I was a little girl. I loved it there!
They really do look gorgeous together, but I’m going to be honest. In response to Brittney’s comment concerning “any man like encouraging me to go natural I had to hang on to”, I will say that the fact that he encouraged her to go natural is GOOD but it is not a sign from heaven.
Despite the negativity some of us receive from the black community concerning our hair, we’ve got to understand that it should be a NORMAL thing (rather than something amazing) for a man to accept us in our natural state.
I am not saying this to be negative about their relationship, but to spread a message to other black women that we need to maintain standards and EXPECT more in our relationships. If a man shows your natural beauty some love it should be more like a given (of course he likes me, I’m gorgeous!), rather than something that makes HIM special.
Anyway, I hope they’re happy together and wish them well.
@ Yello Kat- I think you took her quote- which really was “Well, any man like that I had to hang on to” out of the context of what she was saying. I think many of us agree that it’s a wonderful feeling to have your significant other’s support- rather it’s your hair that you are struggling with, your weight, a crippling disease or anything that has been hard for you. She said, ” man not only supported my natural hair journey but encouraged me to big chop my over fried, over dyed, damage, limp lifeless “natural” hair,” – the main word in that sentence is SUPPORT. I don’t think she was trying to insinuate that any man that loves your natural hair should be a women’s only standard. Of course a man should love your natural hair, and that should be “a NORMAL thing”. But the point she was making is that she was going through a struggle and he supported her throught it period. And maybe you didn’t struggle with your natural hair journey but I did and many women I have spoken to have struggled , not because we don’t love ourselves but because it was new to us. So yes a man should love you for what ever you look like, but kudos to any man that supports the women he loves when he sees her struggling or showing signs of distress. And congrats to this beautiful couple!
@Cupof*T I was looking for a “like” button. lol!
Thank you for the well wishes, Yello and I appreciate your opinion but I’m going to have to disagree with you on a couple of points. My fiance didnt encourage me to go natural. I was in fact, natural before we met. What he did encourage me to do was to BC (big chop) which to me, does deserves some recognition. I do agree with you on that it should be a NORMAL thing for a man to accept us in our natural state but truthfully it’s not of the norm.
Especially in my generation, where majority of men (and women) grew up in what I like to think as the “Media-influenced” era. Media has done an extremely well job at telling us how we should look, act, think, what we should consume, how we should wear or hair, clothing, etc. and unless you have a very good sense of self (usually instilled by good parenting..which, also my generation unfortunately lacked as well) it’s incredibly easy to be influenced. Personally, I think men and women who are doing the exact opposite, who arent allowing the media, and outside influences to determine who they are or should be, deserve to be recognized and celebrated. That’s one reason why I <3 BGHL, "Celebrating dopeness.." I think more dopeness and individuality should be celebrated, because too many people do a go out their way at celebrating (and profitting off of) mediocrity.
Also, my fiance isnt "God Sent" only because he loves me natural, he's God sent because he IS God sent. Any man (or woman) that knows how to recieve, recognize, appreciate and give real love freely and willingly is from God and that is in my opinion makes him very, very special. Thanks again for the well wishes and we are abnormally happy together. 🙂
