The Colored Girl Campaign initially debuted breathtaking photos of black women in June 2016. The photos were a part of a movement that seeks to destroy the stereotypes associated with black women and bring their true beauty to the forefront. The campaign, created by Victory Jones and Tori Elizabeth, places a variety of black women in front of the camera and showcases them in a positive light. In this endeavor, the ladies highlight black women regardless of age, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or religious affiliation.

Yesterday, the campaign released it’s second set of photos called “The Rebirth” and sat down for an exclusive interview with Fashion Bomb Daily. This time, the photos showcased women of varying ethnicities like Nigerian, Indian, Jamaican, Chinese, and Dominican, to name a few. The models were also of varying skin tones, going from one end of the melanin color spectrum to the next. Representation was important for the second installment of the campaign because there are stories among other brown women that should be told as well.
“Yes, We love black women. We are black! But we are also brown and part of a much larger global community of Colored Girls. And yes, we feel that what we are doing is sorely needed, because representation matters. We also know that to ever move past where we have been or even where we are today, both are needed: the celebration of US, as well as the inclusion of others who have also been marginalized.” – Victory Jones – Fashionbombdaily.com

The original models in the photos are wearing white to separate them from the models who are wearing earth tones – white symbolizes rebirth and awareness, while the earth tones represent those who are just beginning their journey to becoming awakened.
“We chose to style the original girls in white to set them apart, signifying “rebirth”. Having been featured in the original campaign, they’ve been here before, and have had an awakening of sorts. They’ve undergone the journey, which the newer girls (in nudes, neutrals, earth tones) are currently embarking upon… a rite of passage to self-discovery, which begins with first accepting and embracing everything you are,” – Tori Elizabeth – Fashionbombdaily.com
Victory Jones and Tori Elizabeth have created a campaign where almost every woman of color can see themselves front and center and as beautiful – that’s pretty dope. According to there campaign’s website, the movement is “curating change…one campaign at a time.” It looks like they are well on their way.
