Yarn braids are becoming increasingly popular among naturals. Not quite as defined as braid or twists extensions they look a lot like locs, exuding an earthy, stylish look. What are your thoughts, ladies? Would you rock them?

Hey guys I just took out my poetic justice box braids today I was disappointed because I thought it would last longer but my hair grew so fast and it did not age as gracefully as I hoped…but anyways I want to.put in yarn twists next and I like that they age more beautifully …how long should I wait become getting these done?

I tried these ONCE and liked them. They do have a more dread-ish look. White people loved them, a lot of black people have the “wtf use real weave!” opinion but it’s cool. I’ve had Senegalese before and yarn is lighter than synthetic hair. It took me about 3 days and they still weren’t perfect, but I had lots of interruption. I’m debating now if I should do those again(in black, this time) or get “Poetic Justice braids”. Might do yarn again: cheaper, lighter, more familiar.

I absolutely love yarn braids my sister will be installing them for me tomorrow. I want them to be about bra strap length. It’ll not be my first time. It was the only hairstyle my mom was comfortable with letting me get.
Hey there. I put yarn braids/twists yesterday as I am growing dreads and I thought those would help shape them up. It’s a pain (not entirely unbearable bt this is my first time scalp pain)…I want to rest my head down on my pillow..I am not sure whether wetting them helps with the pain…can anyone tell me from experience about the pain lol..how long does it last? what eases that pain…
Hey I just wanted to share that I will be getting yarn braids by the end of the week and that I plan on having them booty length. I know its going to take me like three or four days but I know I can do it if I have no interruptions. And I wanted to know how to care for your yarn braids.

I tie a knot around the loose ends, then burn them. Look up Genie locs on youtube, you will fined oodles of videos on yarn braids!

naturally like your website however you have to check the spelling on quite a few of your posts. Several of them are rife with spelling problems and I in finding it very bothersome to tell the truth on the other hand I’ll certainly come again again.
I just tried a braid with some acrylic yarn I had in a basket, THEY ROCK! I will most defiantly be braiding my hair with yarn. It is cheaper and prettier looking. Also, you do not have to worry about the braids getting frizzy because they are supposed to look like that! I can’t WAIT!
I love these so much, but do they cause any breakage and how long do they take to dry when washed?
I just finished putting mine in yesterday and I love them! I need to fix the ends a bit but I think they’re awesome. When I go back home (to Namibia) I’ll get them done at my sisters salon so they can look fuller. They’re definitely a style I’ll do over and over again 🙂

Those look great. Are they twists? And what do you use for moisturize? I just got braids recently. It was my first time as well as the hairdresser’s first time trying them. Hopefully we will do better the 2nd time around. But I’m not sure how to wash or moisturize. Any tips are welcomed.
I have these in my hair!! I’m all excited since this was my first time at plaiting in my own extensions, took me an entire week but it was worth it. Right now I only wish I had purple yarn for my streaks, im not used to having extensions without some shade of purple in them but i’ll wear my green streaks with pride until I get around to buying some purple yarn

I absolutely love yarn braids. They hold moisture unlike the synthetic hair. I began using yarn when the synthehic hair caused a bad allergic reaction (blisters, sores, and pain). Yarn can be shampooed easier, and its not heavy like synthetic hair. Im transitioning back to natural and I want to deep condition my hair before I braid, any suggestons

Kumashe, dido on everything you said. Andrea S they look awesome on you in all the different lengths. Someone above asked how often do I redo them? Since they are easy to wash condition and deep condition, I redo a few at a time I don’t remove all of them and redo the whole head. Because I started washing them soon after I completed the first set and because I never use creamy moisturizers, I don’t have much build up. With our busy lives if you want something different that is very close to our hair texture, this is it! I notice that some naturals believe braids with extentions are not part of our roots. They are so misinformed, our ancestors used extentions and were proud of the may hairstyles they created. I feel it is a blessing that I can do any hairstyle I so desire with appreciation. Natural isn’t imhp about trying to prove to others how natural we are. I went natural to show how beautifully and creatively diverse we all are and to appreciate my true self.
I love them to death! They’ve become the only braid style I rock since I went natural!

Totally I have had mine in for 2 mos now and will sadly be taking them out in a few days, I love the low maintenance as all I did was wash it 3x a week, conditioned 1ce a week , deep conditioned 2ce a month and I was fine and it kept HIH syndrome at bay sigh I will truly miss it but its back up in the winter woohoo 🙂

Hi NinaG, Thank you for the compliment. I am a jewelry designer so I enjoy making hair accessories. Hi Jo thanks! I use three strands in some places 2 strands around the edges and in some places 4 strands. The amount of strands depends on how thick my hair is where I am braiding. I also do not believe in burning the ends, I tie them and that’s what makes them look like dreads upclose and far. Length is also key imho I think more length in this style gives a more natural look. Don’t worry about time, these took me a week. However, it was fine because i did the crown and wore them up until I finished. Since it is with yarn you don’t even need much of your crown to be done to cover the middle with your up do. I also wear some beautiful head wraps See the pics below. I love yarn braids. I tried them once before. They are extremely time consuming when you do them yourself but it’s way cheaper of a braiding style than any other one. Think about it, a thing of yarn, some scissors, and a lighter are really the main things you need. It really gives the look of locs. I encourage many to give it a try.
Yarn braids are beautiful I did mine myself in 1990. No one was doing it back then, in school many thought it was odd but I loved them. I have them in again I love that I can do them my self and they help keep your hair moisturized and they are very easy to wash. They can be a little heavy after a wash but I don’t mind it at all. I wash them once a week and moisturize with coconut oil twice a week. Daily moisturizer is home made lavender oil water and a touch of olive oil. View photos attached. Try them they are fun!

Those are yarn braids???!!! They’re awesome! How many strands of yarn do you use per braid? I think I did mine too large (trying to save time!) and they didn’t look like dreads the way I wanted them to and they got messy QUICK! Please, tell me your tips and secrets.

How did u do the ends of the braids?
I used to have locs and think this would be a good way to rock the locs without going through the process. Had trouble trying to do it myself at one point, but hoping to try again. Would love to learn how.
Absolutely! was just considering getting yarn braids a few weeks ago (even though I avoid getting braids a rule b/c I can’t stand the pain of having my scalp pulled. As long as there’s no scalp torture involved, I’m game.)
I put yarn braids in my hair every winter just so my 3C doesn’t get dry because that’s when breakage happens. When I do wear my yarn braids, I get a lot of compliments on them and i love them, BUT there are some naturals out there that go overboard with the colors, so i have to say if we keep them looking natural and maybe one or two of a different color, i can support that!

I got yarn braids for a trip to the Dominican in March and absolutely loved them. I had friends who thought that I’d grown out my hair and locked it. The yarn is not rough on my curls and I was still able to wash, deep condition, and even oil my hair with them in. Yarn braids/ genie locs are a great protective style and are not damaging and the best part… THEY”RE CHEAP!!!! If you’re doing your own the yarn is like 5 bucks at Walmart or Michael’s. I’ll definitely be getting them again and may even try to do a set on my own!
If anyone knows someone that does it professionally in the DC area, please let me know. I would love to do them in the winter.
I wear yarn braids all the time…I’ve worn them for a total of 7 months combined within 1 year. Its an easy protective style and it’s cheap!

For a protective style in the winter, yarn braids can’t be beat! I kept mine in for months and they were very easy to keep moisturized and styled. The extra plus was that they cost me only $5 to put in for 2+ months of protective styling. Here are pics from some of my earlier sets.

I love yarn braids.They were pretty popular in Fla in the early 2000’s. as a stylist i do them and I wear them occasionally. unfortunately, in my experience the yarn seems to suck all the moisture from the hair while wearing them. I find it best if i do a hot oil treatment and then use a lot of shea butter while braiding them in. I like that they wear for a long time, you can wash them as much as you like without a whole lot of frizz and things. So yeah, I’d rock em…. and i suggest it to anyone looking for a protective style that you can get wet.

I’m actually rocking them right now! It’s my fav yearly protective style. It took me 12 hours to do them (by myself) & I’m going to keep them in for the rest of the summer & then I’ll re-do them over for the fall/winter seasons. I also wore them for the whole of last year (as my protective style)& my hair grew an extra 4 inches! I really like the wooly loc-like look it gives & it also gives me a glimpse as to how I would look if I were to loc up my napps.
I am rocking some right now, and I’ve had them for about 6 weeks now. I do plan to keep them and let my hair loc up, eventually cutting the ends little by little until it’s all mine. (I don’t want my hair longer than APL) I hope it works!
And to the person who said yarn braids were an insult to those who grew locs; I grew my own locs for years until they got to BSL, and I’m not insulted by yarn braids at all! Obviously, since I’m using them as a route to my next set of locs!

I’ve worn them several times and truely enjoyed them. They look great, my hair retained the moisture, and my hair didn’t loc. I would advise that it is a lot easier to put them in than to take them out.
I’ve stayed away from braids, kinky twists because I find that they leave the ends of my hair super dry which leads to no retention of length. I am curious to try yarn braids though, maybe when I start school again and will be too busy/sleepy to spend 20 minutes on my hair in the morning.
Nah, I feel as though you have to be super pretty to makes these look good. Furthermore, I hate any style that’s going to take hours to do.

I got it done during the last couple of days in my trip to Ghana for study abroad. Yagazie, my fellow nigerian, & blackonyx inspired me to get them. I will be doing my yarn braids by myself in the near future but a bit shorter and smaller braids. i love them & everyone loved them.
Yes, I most certainly would! but i prefer the big twist im rocking now because they only take 2 and a half hours to put in last forever and allow me to keep my natural hair healthy in the process. check out the pic below. thanks for posting this!

They are cute, but kind of insulting to those who actually go through the patience to grow real locks. LOL.
I’ve them before – about 17 years ago – and they were convenient as all get out and did resemble locks the older they got. But the feel … well, they felt like a sweater on my head.
I can’t do fake anything in my hair. I had kinky twists in high school for two years while I was transitioning (though, at the time, I was just not getting perms and wearing my hair in twists to get it out of the way), and everytime someone complimented me I felt like I was lying to them- My ‘dreads’ and I got voted coolest hair in my yearbook and I felt bad about it.
This, mind you, is coming from a girl who wore fake hair from the age of 11 to 18. I hated having people ask what that lump was in my head (or those lumps with the twists), I did not like being worried about a braid falling out if I felt like going for a swim and the saddness I felt when I had to let go of that full, gorgeous head of hair- even for a few hours to re-do it was heavy.
Also, it takes more effort than I’m willing to deal with- explaining how my hair got so long, the process of putting them in and taking them down, the combing afterward, explaining that I did not, in fact, cut my hair. Blech. I just let it do what it does.
I know how you feel, I’ve had those fall out braid mishaps too and classmates who’ve picked them up and held them in the air, and me practically knocking them down to remove the exposed braid from their hand so no one would see, but whatever, it happens. I just had to do a braid-on-the-floor check over my shoulder once in awhile, it’s an insecure feeling but I got over it. If anyone compliments you it’s a chance for you to educate them, a lot of people who don’t wear braids are nieve and they don’t know how the drill goes, sometimes when I explained to people what was in my hair they got it done too. Besides I’m sure you’re beautiful anyway and that’s why people feel so free to compliment you. I’ve been natural for 4 years, shaved my head twice cuz of braid (way to long) and weave (way too much heat) damage, and for some reason I got tender headed. I’m gonna try yarn braids/genie locs shoulder length just as an experiment for the winter because everyone says they’re cheaper, lighter, and just needs to be moisturized lightly. And Red Heart acrylic yarn is what everyone says too use cuz wool pulls out your hair. Sorry i’m writing you a book but I just could relate to you, I’ve soooo been there. God bless girl 🙂

I did this style myself my freshman year in college. I also did yarn twists my sophomore year. I loved the fact that the longer I kept them in the better they looked. Just remember to moisturize often b/c they can get a little dry.

Those came out gorgeous, you did a great job. How long did it take you to put those in and what type of yarn did you use?
I believe they took 12 hrs I split the time over the weekend. The yarn I used was the Red Heart Super Saver yarn in black, you should only need one bundle of the large roll and it costs about $5 at walmart.
OMG! The braids,twists, and you in them are gorgeous!!! I cannot wait to do these as my protective style in the winter. I want to loc my hair up after my wedding, and these will give me an idea of how I may look with them in. I’m TOO excited right now.
I just took a set down last week. I put them in (first time doing extensions of any type) to go to Mexico, as I was afraid of properly taking care of my hair through a week of sun, surf and pool water. Best thing ever. It took 2 days of on-and-off braiding to get them in. My mom looked at some tutorials and said she thought she could do it. I could wash them, DC in them and styling was fun. They looked great and everyone complimented them. If you do wash, I would caution to get a lot of the water out. Since it is fabric, I was afraid of mildewing, but that did not happen.
My mom was afraid to do them tight and I had a growth spurt, so they started looking a little loose after three weeks of hard wear. I have looser textured hair around my perimeter, so those started slipping. All I did was unloose a few braids while I watched tv and re-braided my whole head in sections over the next 4 days. So, in all, I kept my hair braided for 7 weeks. I had a ton of growth and they were super moisturized. I had no breakage or loccing, which is what I worried about.
My only problem is that since you have to use acrylic (DO NOT use wool, since it is a natural fiber and will start to loc) and I had a difficult time finding a brown that was closer to my hair color. Red Heart had a brown that did not work and a black that I used but was a bit darker than my natural hair. Key to wearing these, I think, is to moisturize often. And adding a little conditioner to the braids when you remove them helps it come off easier.
This article is right on time because I have contemplated getting yarn braids for months. I even went so far as to buy the yarn but I haven’t done them yet. I have seen the YT vids but I am unsure if I have the stamina to get the job done. I love the way they look though.

I’m rocking them right now and cut them into a bob style. So low maintenance, every time I put them in I always want to actually start locs but then get deferred because I’m too impatient to wait for the locs to get to waist length. lol

I would try them out because they look pretty real on the head. I remember watching “Living Single” and Maxine with the braids in her hair always looked good.
On a side note ladies who love buying perfumes you definitely need to try out the new one from Sephora called “Bvlgari Mon Jasmin Noir” perfume. This perfume smells wonderful and lasts all day, you must check it out.
Not for me,I refuse to spend more than an hour on hair styling,in a stylist chair or mine. The woman in the pic looks good w/her yarn twist though

I have had yarn braids twice, each install was done by myself and it was very easy. I kept them in for about 1 1/2 months, and the first install was a above shoulder bob, and the second was about apl. I will definitely be putting some in again for the winter. blackonyx’s video’s really helped. If you are looking for an easy, and lasting protective style I suggest you try them out!

Are you using curly hair (used for tree braids) for your crotchet braids or the pre-braided crotchet braids. I’ve been trying to look for the ones that were popular back in the 90’s but can’t seem to find them anywhere (I was looking for the straight single braided hairs). So I’ve just been using curly hair.
I have had yarn braids and I’ve done yarn twists also. The twists were easier to take down, but they have more of a kinky twists look, which is cool. However, if you are going for more of a locked look, then braiding is the way to go.
I’ve been wanting to do them again, but i just don’t want to do them myself because it is just so time-consuming. I am not a great braider and sometimes it take me a few attempts before I can catch the hair the base tight enough.
I love them. Like a previous person stated, they are so light. The only time they are a little heavy is after you get them wet. Imagine having a drench wet t-shirt or sweater on your head.
Whenever I can muster up the energy and set aside a weekend, I will do them again.
I just did some yarn braids on Saturday:) One of the easiest braid styles to do because the “hair” is already perfectly proportionate each and every time.

I had settled on loc’in up but have since changed my mind. Hopefully I will be getting some yarn braids sometime over the next few months.

I know a stylist in Chicago who is GREAT at doing Yarn Braids (she calls them “genie locs” ^_^) and other amazing natural hair styles. I plan on getting some soon actuallly. Email me if you want her contact information. She’s the only person I let touch my hair now…other than myself of course.

I have been searching for someone to do either senegalese twists or yarn braids! Do you have any pictures of your hair she did for you as well as her contact info? I am really wanting a protective winter style, but am finding it hard to find someone to do a good job.

I did em once. They looked cool but OMG every time my hair brushed my face it felt like a sweater! I did them just above shoulder length so they were always touching my face. I had just cut my locs off and they just felt WRONG! They looked really cool and were super easy to care for. I’ll put them in again, but only in the dead of winter.
check out blackonyx77 on youtube.. she does a whole tutorial on how to put them in (the 2 strand and 3 strand method), includes various styles, a washing and scalp cleansing routine, and a video on removing yarn braids. add to all that she talks about her experience with this ‘protective’ style. the lady is thorough and she rocked them very well in my opinion!

I made a few mistakes with my first attempt so they only lasted 2 weeks+, but I will definitely be doing them again. Only downside = I missed my hair! Lol! Oh, and the takedown. Yikes! 3 or 4 hours and that’s with a TWA under it which meant I could cut most of the yarn right off! 😐
I have had yarn braids twice. OMG! They are so lightweight and easy to manage. The only downside (for me, at least) was that my hair knotted up after I took them down. The knots weren’t too severe. Other than that, I would get them again in a heartbeat.
is it easy to wash hair with yarn braids in without the hair starting to loc up?
Yes, but I don’t want to take them down, lol.

you cut the yarn first to your desired length. and pull 2 to 4 strings(depending on the thickness you desire) then braid in as you would singular box braids.(separate into three, wrap , then plat.) Burning them can be tricky because yarn usually doesn’t seal well. so you’ll have to burn the ends and then maybe go over them again with a lighter after your finished. I have seen some people tie the ends in a knot. and cut the remainder, then fick a lighter on the tips. It holds. It’s really a matter on the look you would prefer.
I love that girl’s blog! My hair locks up after a few days in 2 strand twists so I’m paranoid that I’ll never be able to get the yarn out!
My hair doesn’t lock up, but I’m afraid of the same thing! They are gorgeous, I love the look. But, I feel like they would rob my hair of moisture, despite my best efforts to prevent it and that they would be a nightmare to remove, resulting in damage from the takedown. However, you girls who rock them look awesome!!
