The Bubble Nail/Hump Nail Trend is Breaking the Internet Right Now

“Hump Nails” or “Bubble Nails” pretty much broke the internet last week. With news of police brutality sweeping the nation it’s not wonder the images of the latest nail trend have popped in all of our feeds and timelines. Some might call these nails an intentional distraction from the more pressing issues concerning our society, while others (and rightfully so) are enjoying the sheer bewilderment these nails invoke.

Real talk? I thought these were a joke, but apparently they are a real thing. And they’re not necessarily new (although they’re catching fire on social media just now). A 2009 Nails Mag article discusses the trend;

According to nail tech Hoa Bui at Ann’s Nail Salon in Philadelphia. “Bubble nails require building and sculpting of the acrylic until you get the look your client wants to achieve…You start with a ball of acrylic in the middle of the nail, which is the highest part of the hump. The nail has to be thin at the cuticle, then it gradually gets thicker as it gets to the middle of the nail plate. Then from the middle of the nail plate it has to gradually get thinner at the tip of the nail, like a nice smooth hill. The curve has to be perfect.”

  1. This is not the first time I have seen such a manicure. My clients do not understand such a manicure and I agree with them. But if you want to make yourself such funny nails, then why not?

  2. this is disgusting. especially the one where the nails curve over the finger tip…i’m not a health physican or anything but i don’t think it’s healthy to have acrylic placed over your finger tips like that. asking for an infection.

  3. Lol. I’m gonna start a new trend. Poke two holes in a bucket and slap it on my head. Then glue the tracks. Don’t judge me, the “Bucket Weave” is gonna be all the rage…

  4. I have to agree…even though I fail to see why anyone would do this, I can say that about a LOT of other body modification techniques including 32″ straight weave (yeah, I said it).

    Also, this is the first I’m hearing of this and yet it “broke the Internet”…which reassures me that I’m not as much of an Internet addict as I sometimes think I am, lol.

  5. This is what I was thinking. They are aesthetically displeasing to me because humped nails are a sign of a few diseases. I believe people should be able to alter their appearance as they wish (within some bounds of generally agreed upon decency) but I’m not a fan of this trend and think it is off putting.

  6. It’s a stupid trend! Looks like nail clubbing which can be a sign of a lung or metabolic disorder! #NotCool *smh*

    1. That’s the first thing I thought too! To have that shape to your nail naturally is a reason to be alarmed since it’s related to something being wrong health wise. These “hump nails” just look like decorated diseased nails!

  7. I know that no one will ever give black women credit for this, but this is creative as FCK. I knew ever since I saw the first white girl post on pinterest about an intricate nail design that black women were going to have to change the game. Although, I don’t particularly like most of these styles (except maybe the pink one), you have to admit this is not what anyone saw coming and it is creative as FCk. #JetsonNails

    1. How is this creative? It’s literally taking an already stupid trend and making it even dumber. You can tell who actually likes shit like this, it’s the women that don’t work a damn day in their lives.

  8. I no longer judge people when it comes to most simple body modifications, like fancy-pants nails. Human beings have been modifying their bodies since we began to walk upright, to be honest.

    What I like about then is that they are not super long and they are brightly colored. What I dislike is that there is so much acrylic that is applied to the nail bed, which doesn’t allow the nail to ‘breathe’. I am no medical doctor, so I can’t speak to whether it will cause a nail bed infection.

    Overall, although they are not my taste, I think that if people want to wear them, they should. I have yet to see anyone local to me wearing their nails like this, though, so perhaps it is regional….

    Finally, we know now what will happen next- denigrate, appropriate, appreciate, so get ready for it.
