I was totally shocked by this story on strawberricurls.com about a readers’ experience getting a wash, blow-dry and flat iron at a salon. Here’s an excerpt;
Once washed, the shampoo girl and my stylist for the day went away from me and started whispering. I suppose I should’ve worried but I’m not the paranoid type. After the whisper session, the stylist came over and asked what I wanted done… just a wash and blow dry is what I told her. This should involve them washing my hair, conditioning it, blow drying it and then flat ironing it. I had it done hundred of times before without an issue. She said okay and offered to do a deep condition treatment for me as it would help protect my hair.. her words.
I agreed as long as it didn’t take too long and she promised it wouldn’t. To the back of the salon she goes to mix up a deep condition treatment. I didn’t find this abnormal. I often mix things together to use as a DT myself. She started to apply to my hair and it smelled weird, I asked her about it and she said it’s one of the ingredients for Ph balance.
Ummm.. okay.
About ten minutes in it started to burn which I found weird but she assured me it was just “tingling” and it was good for my scalp… another 3 minutes and I told her to rinse me because I was having some sort of allergic reaction or something (I have pretty sensitive skin so this was possible). She rinsed me out and moved me to the chair. My hair was noticeably straighter as my hair wet without product is very curly and big and poofy, lol. This time my curls hung straight-ish which wasn’t normal. She assured me that it was temporary from the heavy conditioner.

She did my hair as normal and 2 days later the breakage started. Panicked, I went to wash my hair and again the curls just weren’t there… I had major heat damage. After several deep treatments, co-washes, etc. my hair never returned to its normal state and continued to break off. I returned to Michigan (where I was staying) and had my hair braided, hoping that would help.
When I finally moved to Illinois (about 3 weeks later) I was ready to take my braids out, upon doing so my hair was just coming out in huge chunks even though I was being gentle. I went back to the salon and pitched a fit demanding to talk to someone in charge. (Yeah, it may seem a bit crazy for hair.. but we know how important hair is to us, right?) When I finally spoke to the manager, she also feigned ignorance. I threatened police action, threatened to sue and eventually someone gave up the information I needed.
She told me that with “nappy” hair, they sometimes add a bit of relaxer to a deep conditioner and apply it. It’s the “kiddie perm” she tells me and most people don’t experience negative results. She said it works well because people are happy that their hair is straighter so they continue to come back.

Any hair stylist put relaxer in shampoo or conditioner without letting the clients know is a PURE EVIL!!!!!!! No excuse!!!! SHAME ON YOU LAZY STYLISTS!!!! If you can’t do natural hair then simply tell the clients that you couldn’t do it. If I ever find out that happens to me, I will SUE!!!!!!!! You will pay for all the products I paid to grow my hair for years and I will get you fired and close down your business. I will make sure everyone will know how dirty your business is. I will not be silenced! I dont play! My mother works with lawyers! This is the reason why I don’t go to salons! My hair is natural. Ladies, if any stylists suggest you to get relaxer or complain how thick your hair is after you come in the salon for the first time…RUN!!!!!!!!!!! Don’t ask…just RUN!!!! Your hair is in danger! And look at stylists hair and you will definitely know…..do their hair look healthy or damage because their hair represent their business. And look at clients hair too. If their hair is short, relaxed, or installed with weaves or braids and nobody has a natural hair…RUN!!!!! Your eyes see the message.
This happened to me at a Dominican Salon in Lancaster PA. BEWARE. I spent 6 months growing out my natural hair and it was beautiful. The first time I went to the salon my hair was blown out and flat ironed. Looked beautiful but the owner said I needed a Keratin treatment. I refused.
The next time that I came back, they washed, conditioned, blew out and then flat ironed. I smelled something funny when she was blowing out my hair and asked about it. The stylist said that she didn’t smell anything.
I went home and the breakage began in a few days. About 60 percent of my hair broke off I knew she put a relaxer in it because when I wash my 4B hair it is limp. I have very thick hair, even when washing it’s a heavy afro.
I was so upset that I went back to the salon, ready to confront the owner and she put on a very good act. So good in fact, that I believed her and thought no one but an evil person would ever put a chemical in someone’s hair without their permission. But I still had that nagging feeling.
I haven’t gone back to that salon since and I am now VERY wary of any Dominican salons . If I had a way to prove it, I would have brought in the police and sued her.
BEWARE.
That’s why I wash and deep condition my own hair . My stylist only combs blow dry and braids in a braided updo ( with my real hair ) once a month !
SHE LYING …TALKING ABOUT PEOPLE COME BACK….POST HER NAME AND SALON SO PEOPLE KNOW WHO THIS FRAUD IS. IF A STYLIST DOESN’T LIKE DOING NATURALLY KINKY/CURLY/COILLY HAIR THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH SAYING THAT THEY DON’T SPECIALIZE IN IT AND SUGGEST THE CLIENT FIND A STYLIST THAT DOES. I am sure your feelings are crushed. That’s just like someone cutting off someones locs with out consent. Unfortunately I would’ve probably acted a fool.
Your stylist is supposed to be someone you COMPLETELY TRUST! What has eroded
this sacred relationship to this level? NO INTEGRITY WHATSOEVER!
For those of you who take YOUR OWN PRODUCTS??? Really??? How can you go
there if you do not trust their expertise, judgment, and the staff in
general?
I have not been to a salon in decades, but when I did go – I HAD COMPLETE
TRUST IN MY STYLIST and their staff. As a beauty pro myself, garnering
trust is so important to me. I cannot imagine what brings people to
these places of deceit. If someone can enlighten me – I am open.

The only thing I can gather is GREED. So many black stylist have been servicing relaxers and relaxed hair for SOOOOO LONG that most do not know how to care for naturally kinky hair…..and even more just don’t want to spend the time learning how because they don’t want to spend the time working with it. What IS wrong here is that instead of communicating in a professional manner that she doesn’t wish to work with kinky hair, she tricks the young lady into permanently changing the clients hair a service the client did not ask for and CHARGED HER FOR THE TREATMENT AS WELL. WHY DO I CALL THIS GREEDY because stylists who only want to work with relaxed hair are loosing money. But they should realize not to rest on the clientele they have or had…..always promote yourself to gain new clients. But if more women go “natural” then what?
Wow, now I think I know what happened to my daughter. She was dressed as Pocahontas and wanted to have authentic looking straight hair. I took her to a Dominican salon and the owner gave her a blow out and trimmed her ends. Her hair looked really glossy and straight. After washing her hair nearly 2 weeks later, her hair felt different.The curls were limp, and her hair felt mushy. I suspected major heat damage and vowed never to take her back there. I gave her protein treatments to stop the the damage.
Five months later her hair has improved, but it is not as dense as it used to be. I am horrified!!! I will only bring my products if I ever take her to a salon again.
It was like I was reading my own story. It was Feb 2012 and I had been natural since 2009 and I went to a Dominican stylist here in the Bronx. I didn’t want to make the trip to my hairdresser in Washington Heights so I opted for the neighborhood stylist and she was very nice and I always bring my own products but she convincted me I needed a deep conditioners which was $5 more. she said she would give it to me for free so that I could try it. She put me under the dryer to “activate” it for 5 min. Everything was the usual but my hair was a little limper but she said it was the conditioer. The blowout was fine but 2 weeks later the breakage began!!!! Chunks of hair were snapping and when I washed my hair??!!!!!! I now had flat waves randomly around my mane. I was devistated thinking my hair suffered heat damage but when I went back to my Auntie who is 20+ years of professional hairdresser she said “what happened to your hair” I told her it was heat damaged from the lady but she knew “Nope this is a relaxer. and she suggested to cut the stringy damaged hair and leave the healthy. Well I went in for a consultation to get my hair back to its glory and I walked out of there with a layered bob. Beware Au naturals
I’ve heard of this before in Dominican salons. I worked in a salon that focuses on naturally curly hair for a few years until my accident. But while I was there we had a client come in for a consultation and tell us about her experience at her neighborhood Dominican salon. She was Dominican herself but the stylist didn’t know that and proceeded to speak spanish asking another fellow stylist to put extra relaxer in her conditioner for the deep conditioner because her hair was “too nappy” to work with . Thank God she understood because not only was this not ethical but she was highly allergic to relaxers and it had taken her a very long time to recover from the first one she had experienced. She left immediately but It scared me to know what people will do for a dollar, not even considering the damage and harm they could cause. Nothing but greed.
WTF?!?!?!?!?!?! i am a stylist and I would NEVER sneak chemicals into a non chemical service!! First of all, without a proper consultation, you have no idea what the hair history is… previous color, relaxers, bleach, heat damage… And I am pretty sure if that client with the “nappy” hair wanted to have her hair relaxed, she would have let you know! I have had clients in my chair who I thought could benefit from smoothing treatment (Brazilian Blowout, etc…) and I have brought up in consultation as a possible service for now or possibly the future. If so, I also explain benefits and mainenance and any drawback that may occur.
I have clients of all ethnicities and hair textures in my chair. It is about using the right products, and skill. If I say you are getting a deep conditioning service, then that is what I am going to give you! UGH.
AND to top it off, that means that you are just giving services away??!
That is just gross negligence.
That’s terrible and as I stylist and member of the natural hair community this is beyond disturbing. I spent my whole time in Cosmetology school and out perfecting my blow out with either no smoothing iron or minimal use of it. You do not EVER add chemicals to ones hair without their knowledge. And if they did not sign a waiver then they can and should be sued . I have no sympathy for a lazy stylist. Do the work, keep the client. I do not play about my nautral hair and I would not play with someon else’s. Childish unprofessional behavior!
My perfect stylist combo has been finding a good black stylist that works in white salons, no chemicals but hair dye in the building. All they do is blow outs, haven’t had a problem in 8 years
I stick only with my hairdresser for this reason as well. My friend was told it was a texturizer they were putting in her hair…turned out to be a full blown relaxer and her hair fell out completely smh she had to sue them and report them, thankfully that stylist is now fired, but the damage to her hair is ever lasting. To grow it out, she just keeps it braided like in micros and kinky twists and other styles. Just sad

I had this happen to me this past December 2014. I have grown my natural hair out for the past 6 years and I loved my hair. It takes a lot for us to fall in love with our natural hair texture, find styles, keep it healthy etc. Well it visited a Dominican hair salon and a deep conditioner was applied just like the young lady in the story but i didn’t rejected it since i would have never imagined something like this would happen to me. Hair was gorgeous when I left but two weeks later started getting a very thick new growth. I washed my hair a few times and my curls were completely gone except this think new growth. A girl friend of mine told me about the sneaky perm tactic so I confronted the salon owner…she all of a sudden couldn’t understand English but understood POLICIA! She still denies using anything other than a deep conditioner but my mom has experienced the same thing from the same stylist and she visited her a week before I did. I have reported her to the GA state cosmetology board but they are 2 weeks out on investigations. I am also seeking legal counsel because I am soo depressed and broken hearted. I mean in literally cry every day because in have to wear a wig until I take her to court so they can see the effects of the chemical on my hair. I just shared pictures in a natural hair group on fb so other people can be aware. Tears…..

I visited a salon in Mauldin SC named Corte Tropical dominican salon#2. After being shampooed the lady started to apply a product while I was in the bowl I glanced over to see a relaxer container the shampoo lady said it was conditioner I advised that I did not want any chemicals she confirmed conditioner no chemicals and quickly rinsed it out. I had no say so and their was a language barrier. I have been natural 5 years today I washed did a protien treatment and deep conditioned my hair is straight in some areas. I’m so upset I don’t really know how to fight this going back has not helped others in stopping this madness.

This isn’t an accident though. They didn’t cut too much off. They were fully aware of why they were doing it and why. And the 9nly reason is to make their own job easier. I’m only in cosmetology school, but i wild never dream of intentionally putting a chemical in someone’s hair for MY benefit. I would have sued.
Agreed with the doings of the own hair. I trust ONE stylist, and when she is not available I log on the good youtube and figure something out for my self. Last time I experimented with a new stylist she hacked off 6 inches of my hair talking about it was damaged, bc she was trying to blow dry it NAKED (no moisture, conditioner or heat protectant) . Not ALL stylists know what they are talking about. STILL mad I let that heiffer “trim the damage”.
See I that’s why I do my own hair…… You will be surprises at how many black women are very jealous of other black women going natural or is already natural. A word from the wise….. Do your own hair or find a salonthat caters to natural hair care oonly……

That’s just awful if it actually happened. What exactly does adding relaxer to conditioner do besides maybe give you some almost kinda straight hair. How does work in favor of the stylist? Also, wouldn’t she or he still need to neutralize the hair after the relaxer is rinsed out? Which would be hard since they’re doing it on the “sneak tip”… It’s hard to believe she thought the client wouldn’t notice anything.
Not to mention the fallout from chemically altering someone’s hair without their knowledge. Who would open themselves up to that? It’s not like the client wouldn’t notice. The entire claim sounds a little dubious to me.
Maybe they did not use a neturalizer and that is why the hair is coming out in chunks. What they are doing is shady.

As often as I think about going back to a relaxer for my own sake, if this happened to me I’d be livid. I can’t believe a licensed stylist would think sneaking a relaxer on clients is the only way to care for their natural hair.

They tried it in soo many ways possible. I put blood sweat and tears into getting my hair the way it is. And u put a perm?!! Tried it.
This sounds very dangerous & she should be sued. That was soo negligent. Never had this happen but, I go to a salon that I trust everytime. I had 1 bad experience @ fantastic sams & I never gone back there again. The lady thinned my hair & then without combing any hair out or anything put cond. in it & then sent me home to wash it out the hair knotted & would not come out. We had to cut out chunks of my hair out. It was a nightmare.
I would be spitting mad if someone did this to me. If I wanted a relaxer, I’d ask for one. What the hair dresser did was so disgusting.
I also have very sensitive skin which is exactly why I stopped relaxing my hair. I hope Gabrielle Allen gave the salon hell.
They need to be sued, some stylist think once you sit in their chair THEY are in charge, they don’t consider the fact some people have an allergy to the chemicals in relaxers . my mind is blown

Contact your State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. They can investigate/fine/shut down salons for things like this.
Yes you can. My mom in law is a lawyer in NJ and sitting across from me. Said you could sue for battery.
My GOD!!! I am sorry I started this comment like this but I AM A VICTIM OF THIS HORRIBLE TRUTH!!! I never believed it and laughed at these “myths” until unbeknownst to me, I went through this horrifying truth. I am Dominican. My mother is a hair dresser. I relocated to NY and I stopped all chemicals cold turkey, no dye, relaxer or anything in my hair. I wanted “virgin” curly hair and would go once a week to a hair dresser in the BX. After some time, I was amazed how my hair “behaved” so properly in the rain, never got curly after the gym or anything. I chalked it up to the NY weather and lack of humidity that I experienced back in FL. My hair would now break and fall out like crazy and I just convinced myself that it was due to stress and anxiety I was consistently experiencing from personal matters of moving, isolation, relationships and work.
Fast forward 3 years… I moved to NJ and started going to a new hair dresser. After 2 months of going to this new hair dresser, I was convinced she was doing a crappy blow out because my “amazing” hair dresser that I had back in the BX did such a flawless job and I started missing her. My hair started curling in my sleep, at the gym and in the shower cap. I started resenting this new hair dresser. Four months later, I start noticing this THICK NEW HAIR GROWTH and it was noticeable… My hair was breaking, stringy and falling out before because there was relaxer in the conditioner! How else do you explain such a thick new growth of hair with stringy ends when I haven’t been voluntarily putting any chemicals in my hair and all this new hair growing out in NJ hasn’t happened in the last 3 years while I lived in the BX. Its a nightmare in real life. I will continue to grow my hair out and chop it off as necessary. I am not a fan of short hair but I know it must be done. I recommend that if you go to inexpensive hair salons, you bring your own products every time and never let them use their own “leave-in” conditioners.

THIS HAPPENED TO MY DAUGHTER!!!! She tried a new hairdresser and washed her hair a few days later and her hair wouldn’t curl. She cried so hard, I REALLY wanted to hit that hairdresser with a bat. My daughter’s hair was down her back, the same consistency as Alicia Keys, which is WAY too thin for a relaxer. I took her to our regular hairdresser and the owner noticed the difference and said “you have to watch it– a lot of people from my country (Dominican Republic) put relaxers in the conditioner”. My daughter’s hair broke off so badly, she has to trim it regularly to remove all of the damage. this is a year later, and it’s only up to her shoulders.
Hell nooo. HEAS.WOULD.ROLL. Lady don’t just threathen police action, act. They can’t be allowed to abuse clients right like this. If you just walk away you’re giving up and this is too great an injustice to go unpunished. If you can manage the attention,call some tv stations or something, dont just stick to BGLR.

One screw up and you lose all or bout nearly half fo ya clientele. Yup Id get the name of the shop and let it be known, thats why you sometimes, depending on how you are..just stick with places that are strictly NATURAL shops that cater to you. I feel for this lady..mann I tell you, that I do not miss those tingling near burning sensation on myyyy scalp!! Can I get an AMEN, HALLENUJH!! Lol noww unless its some of Dr. Miracles Deep Conditioner, Id say a huge NO THANK youuu and runnn. I think if I start to see white creamy stuff that has a crazy smell to it before/during/ and after applied I tend to freak out..bad memories from relaxers that burned or that never took :/
wow, trying to sneak in something to a client’s hair that they didn’ want or ask for. Without their permission. If I didn’t sue, I would make sure that bitch loses her business through word of mouth, to people I do know and don’t know. If the client wanted a perm, she would have either asked you or have already been relaxing her hair for a while. This ticked me off so much, I almost wasn’t sure I’d be able to type! She really needed a butt whooping!

I for sure would’ve flipped da script and had a full on N moment(if you’ve watched The Boondocks, you know what I mean..) That is total BULL and they know it. I am coming to you and paying you for a particular service and the fact that they did not truly comply with that means that I do not have to pay you Jack Nicholson!! Its one thing to go for a wash/blowout and another to leave with a relaxed head..Its reasoning like that that I do not go to the salon, because some stylist be as I term it “half steppin”. They don’t know when to keep their mouth shut and then do your hair like they want it. I’m paying, not them..so they should first of all not be allowed their opinon of my hair because I am not paying them..secondly I’m always told 2 of certain things..if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say it at all and the other if you EVENN venture there, jsut pull me aside and tell me alone. The fact that they even did that showed that they do not cater much to us NATURALS and it isn’t fair to do such a thing. Its almost like goin to a party and they slip a roofy in your drink w/o telling you. That’s crazy and they should have to pay damages lol. No punt intended..but somebody’s gotta RE-up somewhere along the line. Someones beautiful hair had to suffer because of some stupid routine that they do not go over with every client. I think that they did that purposely. I’m like this, I’m NATURAL and here..you ain’t gotta like the hair nor the lifestyle..but one things for sure YOU WILL RESPECT IT AND ME. Because so long as I’m whipping the bank roll out, ain’t a darn thing you should be OBJECTING to when I’m greasing your palms. Be RESPECTFUL IN MY DECISION and don’t give NO LIP.
I believe this has happened to my 7 yr old daughter!. A year ago I was taking her to for press and curls. On one trip her normal stylist was not there and I allowed a “younger” stylist to do my daughter head. My daughter started getting upset the minute the lady put the conditioner in saying it was burning. I assumed she just didn’t like the stylist because she doesn’t like change. After the style was completed weeks later my mom noticed what looked like burn marks in her head and I noticed her ends were very straight.No matter how many times I conditioned her hair it would not go back to normal. Finally this year in July I gave her a big chop which left her with a medium size afro. I could tell something was wrong but I couldn’t figure out what. I have been careful to do her hair myself and not let anyone else in her head. Her hair is already back to its vibrant old self but now that I know I know I will only go to natural stylist who are dedicated to natural hair if I ever go in the future. PISSED OFF FROM THIS STORY .

I feel your pain. I used to go to stylist and this was nearly the same outcome. I asked the lady about a wash, blowout, and trim too. She would continually tell me that my hair would not grow much, as if it isn’t already apparent how slowed my growth is due to a pre-existing condition (low iron anemia) and so I hadn’t noticed at first, but she did everything I asked and right up to the point where she’d cut my hair and it was dripping wet. Now I never realized how bad this was until I had read it here once, you never cut natural hair when WET. Then I sadly realized what other than the slight sickness further keeping my hair at bay from growing to full potential. I had even been eating much better with matter of factly a ton of IRON in my diet. It bothered me so much, that that TRICK..he he ain’t gettin no mo of my DAMN hard earned money. She would be all snickerin like when I’d come in and nearly yank my hair out if I were getting braids in it and she would allow the flat iron/curling iron to sit on my hair until it appeared my hair, not the oil was smoking. In my mind I’m like WHAT THE WHATTT, this damn lady is F#kin up. So she tells me it isn’t my hair, its the stuff she put on it that is smoking. Yeah right..I altogether stopped seeing her, though we are in the same family. There are no hard feelings, but her other stylist are not much better. I’ve been there where they sit and continue satring at you and your prized locks/naps/curls which have you, like you are crazy. I hate it and have even heard complaints almost near my face about products I buy, but this time my cousin did what she needed and fired the lady. You should able to go into a salon and get what the hell you paid or are paying for not what the stylist wants for you. I let a limited number of ladies place their hands in my head in general..myself, my natural stylist and when I’m out of town or shes busy..I just get some nice African ladies to do nice braids/conrows for me. All their hands are golden to me and ever since I left my old salon, I have seen nothing but good things with my hair. I just trim my ends myself and not worry too much about ANY salon treatments, there’s nothing that I can’t do on my own without them. Or can get someone else to take care of better. I feel your pain. I had been natural up until 12 years of age, and my mother used to hit comb my hair lol. I know crazy right..but it did work well for us. Then after 12 yrs, I truly don’t know what happened. I think that my mother was tired of hot combing and wanted us to be like the other straight haired girls :/. Go figure…Now I am 23 and have been natural again since graduating high school, about 4 years ago..lol until I actual tried a texturizer..OHH LORDD lol it ended up straightening rather than calming my wild texture, I think I’m 4b or 4c. Anyways, that was around 2009..I have since stopped using those too and only put color in my hair. Lol so I guess you can say I’ma reverting natural, OH GOD did I mention I had a minor mental break..cut my hair around May this year..ALLL OF IT haha. So now I think after about 5 months, it is nearly half the length it was before then lol. I loved my hair short for a little bit, but I’m going to see how long it can get again before I chop once more. It is very tempting to go Amber Rose, sans the color, I’v never been much of a blonde typed gurl..more of a Redd :). You should DEFINITELY sue the salon! They did not provide you the services you asked for. Nor did they tell you they were adding chemicals to your hair. And yes, all salons must tell you this, because they do not know what type of reactions your skin may have to their products. They put your life in danger to life threatening allergic reactions. Finally, they caused major damage to your hair. Who knows how long it will take to mend your hair back to it’s natural state? It can takes years! Or it may never return. I feel this is some sort of racist or self-hatred if the person was an African American. I am so tired of the “relaxed” haired women thinking they have to rescue natural haired women from ourselves. I believe it is all about keeping our natural hair off display so that their hair secrets are not out in the open. Do they really think people of other races believe we have naturally straight hair? This is awful. You should definitely sue and report them. They had no right to give you a service you did not request and also lie about it. Also, sounds like they didn’t properly neutralize the relaxer in the first place, which resulted in the serious breakage. This salon needs to be shut down and the owners and operators do not need to be allowed to open ever again.
WHOA…Did I read this correctly? No bueno. I’m a licensed Cosmetologist and this was completely wrong. Someone is practicing with no common since. You can put condition and relaxer together..you shouldn’t mix anything with a relaxer period. They messed up with doing that first and second by not using a neutralizing shampoo. Relaxer is relaxer and that is a required step. She should have sewed them for that point blank period. I can’t speak for all, but I know that with me before I attempt to do anyone’s hair I ask questions and get a clear understanding of what they are requesting and then give suggestions. It’s no issue if they feel otherwise about my suggestions. From reading the other post on the other site, looks like the Dominican Salons are responsible for doing this practice. Which is sad because everyone should know hair 101, Yes they do good blow outs but they literally fry the hair in the process with too much heat. Sue honey and report them to the Cosmetology board. They will definitely shut them down.

Indeed!!! This is why so many of us are investing in learning about how to care for our own hair. I once had an old stylist call me after not returning ot her shop in a long while and asked why I had not returned. I told her flat out, she provided poor hair care, that she didn’t know how to cut (as she lop-sided whacked my hair off when all I needed was a trim), she got an attitude when I told her how to comb my hair and what type of comb to use (yes T.A.R., I too was a victim of the fine tooth comb :-(, and then wanted to charge me an arm and a leg for everything. Ever since then, I just do everything myself.
I think it’s sad that some of the stylists at these salon’s don’t seem to particularly like to natural hair movement. For them to add chemicals to your hair without your permission is wrong. I think they didn’t want to deny the opportunity to make money so they allowed her into their chair, and charged her for a “treatment” for what was really the relaxer. What I think they should do is hire some natural hair stylist to do hair so they still make the money they want, without the deception.
Well, upon getting released from jail for silly smacking that hairdresser, I would promptly silly smack the salon with a lawsuit. That’s just absurd and a complete personal violation.

Anywho, I’ve been natural for 12 years and in that time I’ve found a salon that I wanted to try a handful of times to flat-iron or double-strand twist (I kno, paying for twists was lazy). But no, when I got flat-irons no one put a relaxer on my hair. Though when I went to a Dominican salon, they really tried to get me to agree to a texturizer.
I went to a black woman last summer who was used to twisting new growth of locs, and said when I made appt for my “natural hair” she assumed I had locs. When I got there and she saw I had loose, she thought at first I was trying to get locs started. When I said no I wanted double-strand twist out, she almost turned me away complaining about having carpal tunnel in one of her wrists and working with my hair would be much harder than twisting locs. idk but I didn’t leave. when i look bak i think it was a sign to not waste the money and just do my own hair. That is the last time I’ve been to a salon. and i’ll never go to another one again, unless it is KNOWN FOR natural hair. And with what I have been learning over the past few months, I have enuf styles to try myself, I don’t think I will ever need a hairstylist except for a really special affair or adding hair.

Wow That is just crazy. A lot of these stylists are used to doing relaxed hair and weaves. When they see natural hair they run. I had to leave my stylist of 7 years when I went natural because she didn’t like doing natural hair. Its hard to find a stylist you can trust. smh!
This is appalling! I would have demanded my money back, and free product or something. If you were very allergic to that stuff, it could have been significantly worse. You can’t do that kind of stuff without clients’ permission. They ought to be closed down!

When I do my hair I know EXACTLY what’s being done.
My natural hair is not a “problem” and, therefore, should not need “fixing”.
I’ve never had a perm and do not want any one of my beautiful coils to vanish and become damaged ever again. That’s why I took it off the hands of others (including my family’s). They always try to remove the coils and do not care how rough they’re being as long as they get results.
However, if I ever find myself dragged to a salon again, I am going to ask so many questions they’ll be sick of the sound of my voice.
I had to just shake my head at this. Since I’ve been natural, I’ve been so wary of having my hair done at salons. Some stylists have credentials and claim to be “very good with natural hair” and I thought they knew more than me. I have been devastatingly wrong every time, either coming out with an insanely short cut after asking for a trim or getting half my head flat-ironed. Two years natural and it’s still a journey.
I would sue!! That’s crazy!! Who are they to add perm to your hair.
And just like that I’m even more scared to go to a salon. I agree with others, sue, report, beat up somebody… something has to be done! Usually I think people sue for silly things far too often, but this is just ridiculous.

Wow! I was really surprised to read this. I am happy you maintained your composure. With that said I really do think legal action is in order and that you realize you were violated. That is a form of violence that was inflicted upon you and they should be severely legally reprimanded for this inhumane behavior. They had no idea if you could be allergic to relaxers and had the audacity to say it was a kiddie perm. If natural afro hair is to unmanageable for them or if they are inexperienced with it they should accept clients with this hair type. Please take care and do research before allowing anyone to do your hair. No one is infallible. All the best…

I heard about this a long time ago on long hair care forum. It really sucks because they don’t neutralize the chemicals in the perm and thus it continues to work- ie take your hair out. I’m kind of shocked at how many people have never heard about this before.

OMG! I was seriously holding my breath and heart while reading this story! I seriously would have had a break down and there would have been a beat down. Only after I’d contacted the cosmetology board of that state to have their license reviewed or penalized for not being informed that chemicals were being used on my hair; small claims court to file a claim for some type of negligence or false disclosure; Better Business Bureau and the Attorney Generals Office. Then I would have put the salon on blast in every natural hair board. And at the end of the day, all of my complaints still wouldn’t have been as extreme as how they damaged her hair.
For me, the beat down would have had to come first! Sometimes stylists try to act like they are above learning something new or changing a damaging practice. They hit you with a “I’ve been doing this for years, and I haven’t gotten any complaints yet.” Though that may be true, that is only a reflection of the ignorance on both sides. A successful business cannot survive with practices like this.
I have heard of this happening before, but thankfully despite my many hairdressing disasters, it has never happened to me. If it ever did, I would strangle the stylist with my bare hands! What a nerve!!!!

See, that’s crazy. I had that happen to me as a teen, but I was too young and dumb to realize what happened until months later when someone pointed out that my hair was straight on the ends and nappy at the roots like I had a relaxer. I never washed my hair because I saw a stylist every two weeks. When i look back, I remember the “stylist” not wanting to tell me what kind of conditioner she was using…acting all sneaky.
And this is why I now exclusively go to natural hair salons (which is rare), and even then, I make sure I see them dealing with ‘fros and locs and ask to see a portfolio.
Wow! That story is simply unbelievable! It makes me scared to go to a salon in the future, especially a black-owned salon! My only advice to this person is to sue their @sses and bankrupt them! They truly do deserve it! Everyone should take this lady’s experience as a warning to be careful when they decide to go to a beauty salon. Make sure to state very clearly to the stylist that you do not want any type of chemical relaxer or texturizer in you hair. Also, let them know that if they try any tricky moves you are not afraid to go to the State Board and report their behinds! It’s a shame that we cannot even trust some hair stylists to be ethical in their business practices. SMDH!!!
My initial reaction to this article was anger like most of the posts. I didn’t reply because I had to let it marinate in my mind for a bit. Now violence is…what it is. However what is the real solution to this particular woman’s problem? What state is she from? who is in charge of these salons? Where can she find an atty to help her sue these people? What schools are actually teaching beauticians to do curly/kinky hair in a healthy manner? Let’s give them an audience, and find out where their students work so we can give them our hard earned $$$. Let’s compile a list of the stay away froms and the please go to salons. Lets make a print out list of the things we shouldn’t use in our hair so we can take it w/us when we buy products online/brick &mortar stores and to the salons. Lastly lets speak up on what we think are practical prices for the wash and styles of our hair. That’s all. I’ll step down fr. my soap box now.

if you are getting a chemical process at any salon and they dont tell you the risks or have you do a detailed consultation run!!! Any good stylist will tell you the GOOD, BAD, and how to MAINTAIN any style or process.

They started a chemical reaction that they never stopped and failed to tell her. That’s why her hair essentially dissolved and broke off in its entirety!!! This is just disgusting.

I do my own hair, I don’t trust “stylists”!!!
Yet another hair-horror story that makes me stay on my “Do It Myself” (DIM) path. My sister had her hair colored and ended up having to do a semi big chop because the stylist used a bleach based mixture on her hair. Another stylist told my cousin her hair could never be “properly” straightened without a fresh relaxer-mind you, my cousin has been natural for over 15 years and has had her hair “properly” straightened before.
Most stylists (not bashing, just speaking on experience) don’t know how to work with natural hair. What most learn in school is how to style hair by any means necessary, not care for it. There are a lot of them who can get your hair bone straight or give you a great roller set, but ask them about the science of it all and you’ll probably get a blank stare. Too many of them refuse to admit that they don’t know how to do something rather than pass up a chance to collect somebody’s money.
This is one of my nightmares.
Right under going in for a trim and coming out with a BC. Internally I feel that it is not to the advantage of some stylist to have a self-sufficient head in their chair. In my opinion some force your hair in such a state where you have to return. Just my thoughts, completely.

This is so distrubing. Another important response to this is to make sure that other naturals are made aware the establishments that are known to do this. Taht way they lose business for their atrocious practices and no other natural has to suffer.
Ok so i went to the site where this was published and dang this happened in 2007 to the girl. Ugh I really wish the girl had taken evidence and spoken up about this to a lawyer earlier. Honestly I don’t know how she could have taken this sitting down omfg…You know what I do know, the old me was a scared little girl letting all the stylists do whatever to my hair. Now that I know better, no freaking way are they coming near my head with even a flat iron. I’m strictly no heat. When I went to the salon to get a trim recently I told the lady, no heat and not too much off unless it was terribly damaged at the ends. She listened and even gave me some great advice on natural hair products. I also asked her about each product she was putting in my hair, especially the dc because I was on the hunt for a great natural dc. Anyways, it’s been about 3 weeks to a month since I’ve been to the stylist and I assure you there is no hair loss. Ugh this whole incidence reminds me of a woman who did a relaxer at her own home, and got major hair loss. She’s now bald and her scalp is not happy site. This all happened because apparently the box relaxer had not come with a neutralizing shampoo. The people putting relaxer in the conditioner, could have done irreparable damage to people’s heads. If hair never grew back wow, yeah they’d be in jail in my opinion. Serving 25 to life, lol exaggerating but if this happened to me, they’d need to be in jail to be safe from me lol.

This is just unethical period and crazy on the part of the stylist being they can be sued! Not blaming anything on the individual this happened to, but mentioning for those that say they don’t go to salons, it’s just important to investigate the salons you’re going to as it is the doctor who takes care of your body.
I don’t know of a stylist that would do agree with these practices, as a stylist that is, and I was always selective in the type of salons I’d worked in so I think that is a part of it but it’s crazy the things I hear about with some of these salons.

This has almost ruined my day…what is WRONG WITH PEOPLE?!

We take too much of this stuff sitting down. I would’ve gone apes*** on them – in a court of bloody law. All them heifers would be f’red – bet they’d never try that mess again. OOoooohhhh I can’t TAKE ignance!
I’m speechless. I’ve always been apprehensive about salons, even back when I was relaxed. It happened twice at two different locations in two different states where I told the stylist that I didn’t like gel in my hair because no matter what gel they used, the gel would harden, making it difficult for me to do anything but wash my hair all over again. And on those two occasions, I was told, “Oh, I’m only going to use a little.” Instead, each used a lot, and my hair got what? Hard.
I understand that they went to school (most of the time), and they thnink that it means they know better for our hair than we do. With that said, if I, as a paying customer, tell you what I like and don’t like, and what I want and don’t want don’t override me.
I’m sorry for the client who received a relaxer unbeknownst to her. She didn’t deserve it, and if the stylist can’t do what the customer wishes, then she (the stylist) needs to let it go. Ruining someone’s hair for money is no bueno. Sadly, I think we’ve fostered this culture where we treat the stylist like a goddess–she knows better; I can’t do anything with my hair; my stylist will do it–that they believe we’ve relinquished all our opinions on our hair.
What is it about hairdressers NOT DOING WHAT YOU TELL THEM TO! Jesus Lord, I’ve had this experience on DIFFERENT CONTINENTS for God sake! I treat stylists like doctors, personal trainers and other ‘practitioners’- they may I advise but MY body knows best, I KNOW best. I’m having a mini meltdown just thinking about this.
They don’t listen to us because they think they know better for our own hair. It’s like you said–we know our bodies best, but we let someone tell us otherwise because they have letters behind their names or a certificate on the wall.

I have read similar stories on other natural hair boards. Has anyone this has happened to gotten any more than an a BS explanation? I don’t see how anyone can be so polite about having an unsolicited permanent process done to them and not demand something to be done. This is unexcusable. We all know how much time and work maintaining natural hair can be. To have a “stylist” ruin that work without permission is unthinkable.
There is no way I would not be taking some kind of legal action!
Wow… We grown, but that is really ’cause for an ass whoppin’. Really. I would like to hear a legal professional’s opinion on this matter. There has to be some type of legal action that can be taken for this foolishness!
I am TERRIFIED of going to ANY salon. I have not allowed any salon professional to do anything to my hair other than buzz it/cut it. I really wanted to go to the salon and have my hair washed/deep conditioned/cut, but this post has aided me in my decision of going to a strict (most likely) male barber who can cut and be done. I’ll handle the rest *side-eye.

I have never ever heard of anything like this before. I am floored!!! I haven’t been to a salon in ages and hearing something like this makes me GLAD!!! I don’t know what I would have done if I was her. SMH…
I think I would have known that something was up when I got a wiff of “Deep conditioner”. The smell of a relaxer is one that is not easily forgotten.
I feel bad for her though.
WHAT?!?!?!?! I would have torn that salon up, my beautician knows that I’m natural and she would NEVER put relaxer in my conditioner. She needs to take action ASAP, that was rude and unethical as a beautician! Your job is to satisfy the customer and not make decisions without the customer consent. She doesn’t make the decision of how straight or curly you want your hair. I’m utterly shock. smdh

oh hell no! this lady handled that with a lot of grace. I would have probably gotten violent. I feel angry on her behalf. This story increases my distrust of salons and stylists and reinforces my love of the diy natural culture.
im honestly not surprised….i remember an incident at a dominican salon in queens ny where i was offered the same thing…i have big but fine curly hair so it looks wayyyy more intimidating that it actually is…the stylist told me i should get a texturizer to make my hair “easier”…i said “what? no.” she continues to push the issue saying “its just a little relaxer in a lot of conditioner, it will make your hair more better”….now im like “excuse me??!! i said no” these so called beauticians have a lot of audacity and i feel they are lazy. id rather you just tell me you dont want to do my hair. on top of it she charged me more money to do my hair than she charged my biracial friend with waistlength hair……never again

This is why I was like I do not get why this keeps happening they are supposed to be trained stylists. It is unfortunate that this happened.
This is shocking and unethical…….i would have taken this Salon to court.But there is deep problem underneath:the respect of our ourselves.What is it that there will always be someone to think that he knows better than yourself whaqt you should do ….And this old idea that our hair is better when relaxed..this story makes me mad
the fact that these stylists put a relaxer on top of wet, freshly washed hair & scalp is blowing me! what if she was natural b/c she is allergic to the chemicals in relaxers, what if her throat closed up in the chair?! i think some stylists need to be reminded that the idea of beauty varies, & stupid mistakes like this can cost you your ass!

That was my first thought also. Why in the world would anyone put relaxer on wet hair? I think if this was a chain I would report to the regional or national management. I think I would also contact the cosmology board.
And because I would want anyone else to experience the shock, I would post the name of the salon, the stylist and the manager on this site, naturalcurlly.com, napputuality.com, twitter and facebook. When someone googles or bings that shop they will know exactly what they are getting.
I am sorry but I do not get it why this keeps repeating itself e.g. “she gave me a cut instead of trim” now you get a “kiddie relaxer” instead of a DC. That would never happen to me. I always take my own products even when I was relaxed and I spoke up. If I was not happy you were not getting paid. I would be watching their every move and side to the side so I can see in the mirror. Plus I would smell the products just to get a feel for it in case something was not up. I would not trust the stylists entirely. Never! I love my hair to much to be polite. What a shame. I do not care if it seems “silly” to do but better safe than sorry. Even if I had to apply my own shampoo and DC and leave-in myself I do not mind at least I know what went it my hair. This should be a warning to people it does not matter whether they are “natural” salons or whatever you may get someone who is not on their A game that day and your hair gets jacked up. Sure you want a relaxing experience but better safe than sorry. However, that is just me.
What you have proposed is a good solution and one that I am going to follow should I ever find myself in the position of going to a hair salon again (which is highly doubtful). HOWEVER. I don’t think that this woman should have been blamed for not bringing her own products to the hair salon. We don’t blame people who get salmonella or other forms of food poisoning because they “should have known to bring their own food to a restaurant” or for people who suffer from poor care at the hands of other professionals whether they are doctors or mechanics. We go to these people because they are supposed to have training and expertise in their respective fields!!! While it is true that we have to get better at speaking up and been active participants in our own care this is beyond ridiculous…and we should NOT be blaming the victim for the sh*tty, whack, f’ed up actions of the stylists at this salon.
I don’t believe that she was blaming the lady for not taking in her own products, but she was sharing her experiences and what she would do at the salon.
I hope it hasn’t come to that (needing to bring your own products). This is supposed to be a professional service.
This is not the first time people would bring their own products it is not a new practice. People even get charged cheaper for bringing their own products.I know what products work on my hair I would rather use that than something that may not work well on my hair.
I would hope it does not but for me better safe than sorry. “supposed to be” that is it right there but unfortunately this as we know is not always the case.

That is great that she had the foresight to do that, but I will reiterate what I wrote earlier: if you are paying for a service you should not have to go to these measures!
Sorry but you misinterpreted what I meant. I was referring to these bad practices occurring again and again and especially in a place where you are meant to have a professional service. Sure you should not have to go to such measures but better safe than sorry.
Where did I blame the lady if I was doing that I would have addressed her directly. I said I do not get why this happens not blaming her but why are the stylists still doing this?? I was stating what I have done before and would do concerning my hair. I can only speak for my hair. So next time please read properly. If Jaz could get it others should too. so true, I’m ashamed of these stylist. (as a natural hair pro) They shouldn’t touch their hair if they don’t want to deal with it or understand it. I would have been off the chain in that salon the second my scalp started BURNING. They could have done some very serious damage to her scalp. Especially if they were applying it like a conditioner instead of a relaxer. (usually massage conditioner it my clients hair) and then if they werent washing the active chemicals out properly. Which I’m sure they weren’t since they were trying trying to fool her into thinking she is getting a conditioner and “lord” if they put her under a dryer….Really. I would have been mooooore than pissed.And tho suing may sound good. we all don’t have the Time nor the money and in that moment. I would have made sure and clear to atleast take some action( got the better business bureau involved) in which they will suffer from my hair loss and possible permanent scalp damage. In NO way should anyone be blaming the client because this salon is Totally in the wrong. and truly need to be dealt with because they feel this practice isn’t harmful and not a big deal.

The client should never be blamed,obviously. Having said that not all stylists are bad but like I said someone may not be on point that day. There has to be something in place for customers and a procedure we can take.If anyone knows the actual process for doing this please post that way it can help someone Godforbid they find themselves in that position.

honestly I would have wrung their necks, kicked them in the butt repeatedly then shaved their heads. I would have gone incredible hulk on them and I am not even kidding. Just because it’s hair doesn’t mean all the months of hard work in maintaining its beauty should be thrown down the drain because of some rubbish of a salon. If I wanted a perm I’d ask for it. Damn them and I am not even kidding. For real, I’d sue them, for emotional grievance and falsifying information. In no way did the woman ask for a relaxer, so she should have not been given one. This is truly grounds for a suit. No one should ever have to be scared that some idiotic salon would perm their hair ugh!

yes, this is grounds for a major beatdown and a lawsuit. she has to cut off all her hair and start again. Nope, i wouldve wiped the floor w someones face. this is why i stopped going to salons. they really dont know how to do natural hair. and the natural salons are too damn expensive. $80 for some two strand twists? thats bs.

I am thankful to have a natural hair salon near my house that I can trust and is cheap. I’m flabbergasted at the prices. For a trim it’s like 5 to 10 bucks. For twists it’s 35 dollars on tuesday. How awesome is that?
@ Chimmy, whats the name of the salon? I go to one that’s a little far from me but worth it. The first time I sat in the chair I felt right at home with my stylist. They’re about average priced for my area esp. since their in a prime time spot.
I live in Indianapolis, In and the salon is called Naturally U, It’s a pretty nice salon. The lady that did my big chop was as talkative as I was, but then the lady who did my twist when I had gone a second time to the salon was soo quiet, I get nervous around quiet people lol.
Very, since the only salon I know of that caters to natural hair charges extra for washing, blow drying and trimming if your hair is natural.
And I still ended up with split ends.

I think you have started something! I live in Atlanta and there are tons of natural hair care salons, all of them charging anywhere from 60 to 80 for two strand twist or some variation of that. There is even a salon here that requires a deposit at the time of your appointment! I want to have the experience of being in someone’s chair taking care of my hair, but it’s becoming too expensive and it doesn’t last. I can get maybe a week, week and a half from most places! I’m on #teamoverit!!!

Wow! I am not shocked one bit. Sad!! I guess it can happen anywhere but I only go to salons that cater to natural hair. It is an atmosphere where natural hair is encourged and celebrated! “Regular” salons hate to see me walking through the door with my huge nappy Afro! 🙂
Since I BC’d, this has been one of my biggest fears, which is why I’m skeptical of going to salons, even the natural ones. The life lesson here is that no one is going to treat your hair as well as you would. Situations like these could be easily avoided if more women realized this.
