While vacationing in Cape Cod Solange (aka one of our favorite naturalistas!) snapped photos of herself rocking butt-length braids while enjoying the sun and sea. It isn’t necessarily new, Solange has rocked super long braids before but she typically ties them into a topknot/bun. What do you think of the long, loose braids. Would you rock them?

you black women and girls should get over yourselves with these outlandish wigs and ridiculous hair lengths and stupid hair colorings that don’t match your skin tone. have nothing against wigs if you have to wear one, but really. some of our black women just look downright pathetic and less attractive than if they wore their own hair. i as a black man am so embarassed and offended at times. i know we have problem hair, but must you go out there and tell the world how inferior you feel you are. blonde, red, purple, etc, etc, whether your attractive or not, if you don’t feel good about yourself, all the blonde wigs in the world won’t help. and i’m not against wearing wigs, but for god sake stop embarassing the rest of us. YOU DIG, have some CLASS, PLEASE.
I do agree to a certain degree some of it is crazy but everyone has a right to personal style.
If you feel good then I say go for it as far as anyone feeling inferior and that’s why they do extra with the hair is not true! For the most part it has been shown that women of color (black) have a higher self-esteem we just like to rock our own look. Other race of women do the same with wigs, different color in hair and extensions and even tan to be dark and get lips plumped up but you did not comment on that???? So we all so something to enhance or change our look and side note black people do not have problem hair we just have different hair!
I wore braids this long when I was in the Bahamas when I was six haha. People were assuming it was my hair, I was like “nnnooooo!” my hair was long but not that long! You tend to sit on braids like this a lot… but they were fun. The next time I got braids though I got them without extensions at all! I just didn’t want to sit on my hair anymore! Or dip them in the porcelain throne which happened once…..
I not only rock pale blonde and red( #33) braids to My butt, I, Also rock top of the butt weaves!!! My philosophy is this: If it’s gonna be fake, it’s gonna be long!!!! Peace!!! And Rock them looong braids Solangel!!!!
I think that the braids are very stylish and are becoming more popular everywhere some of your kids or grand kids may want some just because these famous artist have them
I love Solange, I think she’s great….However, I’m in my 30’s and I would not rock long braids because I would instantly look 25 again, and have all these youngsters trying to holla at me….My daughter on the other hand, actually is wearing long braids now and she is 16yrs old. everyone loves them on her.
Very sexy and stylish
I would love for you to braid my hair. Do you have a website or a way that I can contact you? I am dealing with alopecia. I need help. The woman who used to braid my hair is no longer in the hair business. 🙁
She’s completely right! Where can we find you?! You seem to really care about hair which is rare to find in a braider . If it not in the DC area, can u recommend someone in this area?
OH, i must commend this website…i only found it accidentally…for years i never knew about this place.
women need to come here and read…i tell everyone i know about this place now.
there is so much to learn and see here that can benefit all women regarding hair care.
Big Props to whoever originated this place!

i am a braider, and i have rocked the tailbone length braids often…my style finesse is that i hurt NO ONE, and i can judge accurately how much hair to use so NO ONE ever comes to me with a complaint of worn edges, weight or hair loss trauma.
i am very aware of the ALOPECIA problem women have with over tight or traumatized braiding.
a lot of women don’t know real braid care for their hair.
i recommend, if the braider was good, washing the scalp, braids and all, once every week and a half.
you do not need conditioners when the hair is up, this only makes the style more prone to sebum retention, or that greasy scalp build up.
after the last rinse, hold your head back and pour a solution of glycerin, tea tree oil, and 3 tablespoons of Listerine, with a 1/4 cup of water, in a squeeze bottle, through your scalp.
do this while you are still in the tub or shower.
no need to rinse.
wrap a towel around your hair and tuck it up turban style, for half an hour.
to soak up most of the moisture of your hair.
if you like…you may blow dry the braids for a bit for more dryness.
sleep in a silk head wrap scarf, or make one of your own from an old silk pillow slip.
NEVER pull your braids back so tightly your eyes slant, or your eyebrow strain.
let the braids hang down naturally, the majority of it over the front of the shoulders…two braids from the front top of each side is enough to bring around back restraining the whole hair do, and is a very feminine look.
use your own discretion if you want to tie back more.
everyone who has followed my instructions ACCURATELY has grown her hair.
my first desperate client was a woman who looked like rats ate the sides and back of her hair off.
I trimmed the trauma, and just massaged castor oil and Listerine in those spots, then i cornrowed the rest of her hair.
I redid her hair only every 3 months.
with the above care instructions.i have been doing her braided style for 30 years now, seriously.
my bald headed friend now has shoulder length natural hair, no rat eaten patches, and still gets her hair braided by me every 3 months.
the right kind of braids and braiders GROW your hair, when they know what they are doing.
extentions protect the natural hair when applied correctly.
I rock the solange braid all the time, but only when i have time to do it myself.
I don’t trust many people in MY LONG HAIR since my grandmother passed.
you should be able to talk to your braider and the two of you should be able to take care of your hair.
take care all

Hi I want these braids how many packs of hair I would need for this length ????please and thank u
I am a braider and there is a person wanting me to put these braids in her and I’ve never done any this length before. How many packs of hair should she purchase?
i love these braids i have them right now and plus i have shell on mines super cute
What is this girl famous for besides being Beyonce’s no talented sister who tried to be snobbish and insult the Fox 5 News lovely anchor lady, Monica Jackson, who is a lady. The snob got a huge backlash from us Las Vegans and we don’t want her back. Why should we, she has nothing going for her except her famous sister and she certainly isn’t pretty like Beyonce.
U have no idea wat u are talkking about she is really talented, and imagine u comparing her 2 dat classless fool, solange is way beta and she has a gr8 style,smH
I have these braids right now. They are not that long but stop a little above tailbone length. I’ve had them a little over a week. Twice daily I spray my braids with a water spritz mixed w evoo, and coconut oil concentrating mainly on my natural hair. I love the look on me and I am already planning to put them in again after leaving my hair out for at least 3 mths. I never had problems w braids even when relaxed. However, I would not get anything thats micro because IMO they are too harsh on the edges. I only decided to braid because I think it’s a great protective style just as long as I care for the braids as if they were my natural hair. I’m not sure how long they will last, I’m hoping at least 6 weeks. I will admit I’m already missing my curls..lol… When I take them out I will deep condition the day before and be extra careful during take down process. Wish me luck!
And also when I was younger I wore the long box braids just like her. They never were heavy for me or made my edges fall out. If your edges or braids are falling out your keeping your braids in too long because eventually the braids grow out n hang from you edges especially if the braid is that big!! You can’t keep those in as long as smaller or micro braids.
I love my long braids they are small. Well I would say regular size and my braids are down to my butt so far I’ve had them since april getting them redone and stuff and they are not heavy not even when their wet not even in a bun keep in mind my hair is really thick I use a lot of braid hair it took 12 hours to do but at the end of the day I love them everyone else seems to love them and their easy to manage and so far I have all my hair and edges
looking like the lost member of Cleopatra… Comin’ at ‘cha! lol
j/k I’d rock ’em. I am a child of the 90’s.
too long for me to manage and to heavy for my fine hair. My poor edges would be screaming
Cute look on her, but too heavy for me to wear comfortably.
I will definitely leave this style for swooning over on Solange!
I love them. I copied them. They were hella cute but way to heavy.
I tried wearing my hair in braids, but the braids were so tight and uncomfortable, that I immediately decided to continue to wear my hair in natural and curly styles. Solange and Beyonce look good in braids and I say more power to them.
I have worn braids since I was in high school in the 70’s. Now at 52 I still wear my braids, I have even worn them down to my butt! But now it seem to be very much in style thanks to the younger generation!

If she likes then, I am happy for her.
She looks like she’s having so much fun. 😀 Hope you had a great vacay, Solange!
i rocked the same style when i went to VA beach, i just love braids for vacations. they are easy to style, dry quickly, and are fly.
My

first chochet briads done by me 🙂 witha lil help thanks to My Friend Kizzy. It was super long.
I’ve had some of these braids recently..down to my butt…so long that i have to watch out when i sat down..lol i loved them.and i would often have people asking me..who did your hair?!….
I love them they look so awesome 🙂 you go girl! Right now i’m rocking butt length crochet braids which i cut to bra strap length its super hot in trinidad and tobago.
My front is already thinning, so no.
I have……..why she pretending her head aint bout to fall of though lmao
She wears them well. Personally I would not, one they would be heavy, and two I don’t care for braids.
I rocked this exact style last Summer. Kept the braids in for a month and my edges thinned out. It cost me $300, the loook is nice but my hair was heavy!!!!! I don’t know if I would do it again.

YES!
And I did this past spring! It was fun and def an attention getter! The weight (esp when wet) is an obvious con but I loved it and want to rock ’em again next spring.
i couldn’t do it. my scalp would be on fire. plus i’d probably go bald. my hair is too fine to handle the weight.
I’ve had box braids a little thinner and a little shorter than this, and they were so heavy! I loved how they looked, but I didn’t like having all that hair on my head when I exercised.
Wearing them now in Brazil, they trap heat like a mofo! Never again, lol
She looks great! I cant wait to get my senegelese (sp?) twist for my cruise now! Although since I have a regular job and Im not an entertainer, I would never get them that long….but I can wish.
The thing about these braids is getting someone who knows the right amount of hair, and everything. I’ve had these done before, I wore them a lot, but sometimes you would go to a braiding salon, and someone would put too much hair, and my neck would kill and i’d end up taking them out two weeks later. I couldn’t do yoga, or anything, and once they were out i felt a ton better.
I had my butt-length braids in the mid 1990s. My time with extension braids (of any length) is over. I can no longer wear any hair that is not my own (and never been able to wear wig or weave), so no I would not rock them.
That being said, I do think Solange looks cute. She seems to have a nice, carefree way about her.
nope. but i love all the yellow she wears.
My own hair isn’t’ down to my butt; however, it is top of bra-strap length when stretch and I am currently in box braids w/o extensions. I love them because they look great and I don’t have to do my hair for a bit. My twists don’t seem to last longer than 3-5 days regardless of the product I use, but braids are much more “stable” in my head. I’ve never had extensions but if my own hair grew to butt length, I certainly would rock this style.
I’m loving Solange’s style!
If my hair wasn’t locked I would rock these braids. I used to do this all the time. I did them myself and loved it.
If i didn’t have a job
Yup! I am currently rocking them now. They were perfect for travel but they can be a pain to work out in. But I love them!
they look good on her, but my neck and head will hurt too much. So i say let her rock them!
Looks heavy..
ive rocked them in the past! early to mid 2000s!
My sister just recently got braids just like these. They look really good up and down. The one complaint she had was the weight. Apparently all of that extra hair takes some getting used to.
They look good, but I prefer my hair short. also they look way too heavy to be fun.
I would rock them, minus two to three inches but I love box braids and she is looking great in them!
She looks cute but don’t know about putting fake hair in my own hair. I think that my own hair would be easier to deal with on vacation
celebrateyournaturalbeauty.blogspot.com
I like the look a lot and Solange wears and well..but I’ve never been a fan of fake hair for myself so no I would not rock them.
I have rocked them this long and they are way to heavy. I didn’t feel the weight of them until maybe after having them in for a week. The one time I washed them I felt like my neck was going to break off. I took them out after only two or three weeks.
I like them on her……no love… I can see myself rocking them for 3 days and wanting them out like ASAP
I would absolutely rock those. They’re cute and because of the length super versatile.
+1
I love the box braids on Solange, but for me I remember having these braids in high school and they were very heavy hanging down and caused much tension when pulled up, so I don’t think I will have to pass on this look.
+1, the heaviness and the tension will deter me. I prefer them at least MBL at the longest
They look nice. But I hate my hair touching my neck/back in this heat and humidity.
Bantu Knots all summer long.
OMG!!! Are you serious? you guys sound like a bunch of old ladies. I’m sorry but it’s true! Yes she looks good with these braids and yes I would rock them myself. These long braids will soon contribute to why it is that I’m having so much going natural. I’m currently in the TWA phase and to kill time I’m having so much fun wearing my quick weaves and installs.
I CAN’T WAIT FOR MY HAIR TO GROW LONG ENOUGH FOR THESE LONG BOX BRAIDS
Solange is a hair favorite of mine and always has been(even when she had relaxed hair). So to be honest she’s the reason I want these braids. I’m not worried about how long it will take for the braids to get done or take down , because I believe that any low manipulation hair style is worth it in the long run. And if your properly taking care of your hair while it’s in braids then breakage shouldn’t be an issue right? And if they’re too heavy then pull them up in a bun ontop of your head duhh! Gosh I love my Natural Family but as of right now you guys sound so boring. Spice it up a bit and have fun. Not everyone wants to be limited to a handful of hairstyles. I advise you guys to try this look , I bet you would love it because they look great on just about anyone.
+1. I love her. She is one of my hair crushes!!! CAUTE!!! lol. I want them but I don’t think I would get them that long. But it’s definetely gorg on her and her personal style is fab.
Ummm, what does saying that the braids look heavy and that the style would cause too much tension have to do with sounding like an “old lady”?! That has nothing to do with how the style LOOKS, but how comfortable the style would be.
“And if they’re too heavy then pull them up in a bun on top of your head duhhh!!”—-? Again, umm no! That would only cause more tension on your edges.
I love to have fun, but also like to protect my hair, edges, and scalp, and I don’t feel limited at all on styling options!
like I said before I love box braids and to see so many negative responses to one of my fav hairstyles was actually quite shocking. And if you don’t get what I meant when I said you guys sound like a bunch of old ladies then oh well , because I don’t know how else to break it down to you. I take it you got offended huh ??
I’ve gotten long braids before and never did I experience any tension or breakage. When my braids felt heavy I threw them up in a bun. I’m not tender headed at all so not even the burn of a perm hurt me too bad. Like SOME people I never really had to worry about scalp or hairline issues (when my hair is in it’s natural state.
It’s MY head and MY hair and I can’t help but to feel limited to some hairstyles. I constantly change my hair because I get bored very easily. You say you like to have fun but also like to protect you hair, edges and scalp well guess what ? so do I! Who doesn’t?
I do what I want in my hair journey and I wish you the best of luck in yours.
No girl, not offended at all! This is a hair care forum, not life threatening, and not that serious, just a matter of opinion.
I’m simply pointing out that the majority of the people on the forum were pointing out the comfort level of the style, more so than how it looks. I personally think it looks great on her, but would be uncomfortable for me.
Oh and MANY women don’t like to protect their edges, hair, and scalp which is why you have so many women with damaged hair.
Best of look to you as well!
Actually, if you go back and re-read the comments the vast majority are not negative at all and affirm she looks good with them. However, for the vast majority of people who live a different lifestyle they probably wouldn’t work because of the level of comfort. Fair point. Hair has to look good but also be workable for your day to day living. I would love to rock that style but I’ve had similar braids in the past and the weight and stress on my hair line was too much. Sure, you can pin them up but the question posed was would you wear them down. Nothing old lady about applying some common sense and not playing yourself when it comes to how you choose to wear your own hair. Each to his own.
Lmao , why so serious ?
Hey Lee,
If we are entitled to an opinion why are you slagging us “old ladies” off. The world’s greatest democracy…… yeah, right.
They look nice. But way too heavy, they look as though they will tear out the sides of her head and leave her with a messed up hair line.
Those braids look good on Solange. I would not wear them for 2 reasons: my personal sense of style for one, and two the length is too long for me. I’m a petite girl, so braids that long would look ridiculous! Also, I am tender headed, and cannot imagine the strain of that much hair.
I do plan on getting kinky twists installed some time in the fall to mix it up, but they will be small (not micro) and about shoulder length.
Those are very heavy. She should be careful or her hairline will start behind her ears.
so true
I absolutely love them! It looks so nice on her. So ethnic so nubian .:) I feel like getting them again!!
They look great on her. I personnally don’t like extentions that long, especially that thickness…like others were saying regarding the edges…I would be worried about the weight. I never go past my mid-back and they are always on the smaller side.
I LOVE Solange and I think her super long braids are FLY!!! I wish I knew where I could get them done in NJ 😉
Not my thing but if she likes ’em, I love ’em…
I like the look; but I would not wear there. Too much tension on my edges when styling. The weight of the braids, when wet, would deter me from whereing that style.
Looks good on her…:-)
No. I would never wear braids this long. I would be too afraid of stressing my hair and having in break due to the weight. Hopefully one day my hair will just be really long and I’ll braid it. I’m done with fake hair.
+1 !
<3 Them! I would mos def rock these.
No as nice as they look they are too long and therefore would take ages to do and would be heavy especially when wet.
In fact, after my last experience I am never going back to braids again, I missed my hair so much and having them put in and taking them out is too much like hard work for me.
I agree! I had braids put in once. They looked great, but it took the woman 9 hours to put them in, and it took me and my husband that long, working together, to take them out. Afterward, my hair was extremely dry. I’ve never done it again. I stick to twisting my own hair.
I had really long braids last summer and they would’ve been butt length if I could’ve afforded it. I know her braids are heavy, mine sure were. She’s alright, though, you learn to adjust.
I love this I use to wear long braids in my early 20’s, not so much now there too heavy on my head.
I love these although I don’t think I would ever wear braids this long
