Style Icons are BACK! Shenique from Jamaica // 3C/4A Natural Hair

Yes, it was gone for a minute, but now it’s back; the most comprehensive and sought-after compilation of real-world naturals online — our style icon series! Our beloved style icon coordinator, Meosha, left our team for new opportunities at the end of May. So we took the time to tweak our approach a bit, and commit to an even higher level of quality. Our style icons were always incredible. Going forward we believe they will be jaw-dropping — women who push the boundary of what natural hair can be in both professional and casual settings. We start off with the lovely Shenique from the island of Jamaica. Enjoy!

Introduce Yourself!
S: My name is Shenique Scott. Born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica currently living in New Orleans.

Did you transition or big chop? Share your natural hair journey with us!
S: I did the ultimate big chop! This October will be my second anniversary. I didn’t want to go natural I was quite content with the bald look but my best friend encouraged me and after watching her journey for the first year, I made up my mind. As all new things do my journey was exciting in the beginning until I was challenged with finding products that worked well for me and not to mention the styling. After days of complaining I decided to take a different route to embrace my natural. I decided to be patient and slowly researched hair types, styles and products. I started following other naturals on Instagram and that helped tremendously. I started tapping into my creative side and finally I felt connected to my hair and grew in love.

How would you describe your texture?
S: Helga is predominantly 3C but as it grows I see 4A in certain areas, mainly the back. Majority of the time I keep my hair in protective styles because of the humidity so it’s well behaved but if I decide to wear my fro for a few days I must moisturizer and rod nightly to avoid it getting really dry. Dense best describes my hair and the strands are of medium texture. Luckily my hair doesn’t break easily but that comes with constant care.

Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
S: My styling regimen is simple. I prefer two strand twists because they give me a softer look. I of course try different styles to break the monotony of my twists by pinning them up or adding accessories. Being that my hair is so thick it’s twisted at least five days out the week, day six is normally “Fro Day” and the following day is wash day. Currently Eden Bodyworks Coconut Shea Pudding Soufflé, Curl Defining Creme, organic coconut oil and sweet almond oil are my staples for styling. Jamaican Black Castor Oil on my scalp and Sulphur 8 at least twice a week to help with dry areas.

What does wash day look like for you?
S: Wash day is an all day event and can take me up to four hours. I absolutely love Eden Bodyworks and As I Am Cowash products followed by my Eden Bodyworks Deep Conditioner, found in Sally’s. For protein treatments I mix plain yogurt, egg whites and avocado and steam under dryer for about thirty minutes. My all time favorite conditioners are Aussie Moist found in Walmart and Rempure Originals Argan Oil found in Walgreens.

Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style.

S: A simple bun or two French braids are my go to hair styles.

How do you combat shrinkage?
S: I don’t combat shrinkage because I never do Wash and Go styles.

Tell us about your hair color!
S: It’s not hard to tell purple is my favorite color. While bald, I bleached my hair and during my journey the ends kept a lighter brown shade which made it easy for my stylist to add color. I do my touch ups myself. Parvana Violet and Magenta is my usual combo. My texture has not changed because I have not bleached my hair since.

What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require extra care and attention?
S: The only problem I may encounter is dry scalp which doesn’t happen often.

What are 2 do’s for your texture?
S: Two do’s for my hair are patience and sleeping on a silk pillowcase.

What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
S: Using fine-tooth combs and terrycloth towels on my hair are two don’ts.

Is there a blog/webpage or social media account where we can find you?
S: I’m on Instagram at: helgasnappyhappy

  1. I’m so in love with her hair!!! And she is absolutely beautiful. I love how versatile she is. I need a tutorial on how to achieve those different styles.

  2. I absolutely loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee your hair and the color! My new hair crush :o)

  3. Finally!!! Yes it’s back!!!

Okay lol. Shenique, your hair is luscious and beautiful. You are working that color maam!

  4. Im so proud of u bestilus….. continue to inspire n teach the world about HELGA!!!!…..luv u boo

  5. I see in images, some of the ends are colored and in others, the majority, if not the entire head, is colored. If you haven’t bleached since your bald days, how did you get the color to show? I tried coloring my non-bleached hair this weekend with Manic Panic Ultra Violet and that was an epic-fail.

  6. I’m so happy about this!

I had been viewing style icon posts from previous years on BGLH because I missed the style icon feature so much. So now, I’m doing a happy dance to celebrate it’s return.

Shenique, Girl, those purple ends… <3. You're making me want to dye my hair.

  7. Thank you BGLH and Christina <3

What a gorgeous lady, gorgeous hair. The purple looks so good. I love it.

  8. Yes, yes, yes– to Shenique’s gorgeousness, to purple streaks, and to the style icons (finally) being back!

  9. Well shenique simply because your hair is purple I’ll have to stalk your instagram and like ALLLLL of your pics! lolol

  10. Finally style icon’s are back! I was wondering a little bit whether there won’t be anymore for a long time. I guess this site is hard to find because not everybody knows about this blog. I can’t wait to see a variety of textures and features. The good thing about this comeback is that she has one of my favorite colors on her hair. I love purple and the way it stands out. Another good thing is that she is from Jamaica and I love Jamaica’s culture and oceans. Purple stands out on her and she pulled it off. I’d like to see the BGLH gallery make waves back again. I’m so liking photo 11 and 12.

    1. I agree about this site being hard to find. I mistakenly found it , years ago. I used to go on curly nikki and some other ones. However, i never clicked with those like I did with this onr. Everything i know now, i learned from this site. That’s why now, when I engage in conversating with a fellow natural, especially a newbie or transitioner, this is the first site I recommend, if not the only.

  11. oooh weeee the short twa pic is my favorite! I’m glad icons are back. Just in time (I was going to fast from this site for a while). This icon was a nice start. Can’t wait for the rest.

  12. So glad style icon is back and what a way to bring it with a fellow Yardie ????. Shenique’s hair is gorgeous!

  13. Oh, the lush, purple fro-ness! Wonderful interview, photos and beautiful hair. Great easy, carefree all around style.

I feel so drab in my flat twists right now :/

  14. Gawjus! – I just wish there was at least one pic of her natural texture as the brushed-out fro and braid-outs are all heavily manipulated. Shenique looks lovely all the same, with fab makeup. Great to see a return of the much-loved Style Icons series 🙂

  15. I’m so excited to see that this feature is back! I am a transitioner (13 months strong!) and seeing the style icons kept me motivated.

  16. So, glad to see Style Icon back. I am excited, and hope to see a variety of textures that will cater to all naturals. The young lady above is beautiful. Love her hair style choices. I like that she plays with color; its bright and bold. Her make-up is FIERCE and AMAZING. Great feature 🙂

  17. Her hair is gorgeous! I wish I could wear that color, but my boss would give me crazy looks.

  18. YAAAAAYYYYY style icons! YAAAAYYYYY purple hair! 🙂 🙂 🙂

    Ahem…

I’m happy this feature has returned.
