Sephora Is Selling a 7 Ounce Jar of Coconut Oil for $38 — But Why?

This costs $38…

I don’t understand this. Is the 84 oz Costco jar that costs just $21 not good enough? Do rich women need to feel that their coconut oil is better than everyone else’s? Are they willing to pay out the ass for that distinction? Or is it that they don’t realize they’re being scammed? Are beauty executives just now realizing the effectiveness of dirt-cheap raw products like coconut oil? So they’re trying to turn them into luxury products and ratchet up the price before customers catch on? I just have so many questions…

As for Kopari Beauty — the company selling the ridiculously priced coconut oil — they allege it’s because it *is* better than yours.

Kopari tested dozens of coconut oils from all over the world and discovered the most premium for use on both skin and hair. Like fine wine or olive oil, the quality of the fruit as well as where and how it is harvested makes all the difference. Kopari’s coconut oil is sustainably sourced from small family farms in the Philippines and made from fresh, virgin, and 100 percent organic coconuts. The quality, texture, absorption, and aroma is unlike any other oil on the market. Discover what thousands of Kopari fans have—not all coconut is created equal.

Mkay Becks. I see you bringing that segregation into the world of raw beauty products.

  1. It may be surprising for people like us who are use to buy more affordable products. However, there are people out there who are used to put MUCH MORE money in their products, so it’s not weird for them. Also, people who have more money have different shopping places. They might not even know what Costco is lol. Reminded me of Tiffany Haddish story about inviting Jada and Will Smith to a Groupon swamp tour and obviously they had no idea what a Groupon was…LMFAO.

  2. But why knock the hustle? You don’t have to buy it, i’m not going to buy it. Enough coco with normal prices and more expensive ones. Free market.

  3. Even if I was made of money, I wouldn’t spend this much on some coconut oil. Trader Joes gets plenty of my business.

  4. I’m sorry-not-sorry to report that upon perceiving this insult to my integrity in my local Sephora(right in the middle of a sweltering summer day), I threw an adult-sized conniption fit.
Shucks, I am as bougie as you want to see but I can still get my *Cocos nucifera* from off the shelf of my friendly neighborhood Family Dollar , Whole Foods, or yes, Costco depending upon where I am when I suspect that I’m running low.

  5. Stop giving them space on your website. You’re actually helping them. Focus on building up your house, your brand- you, you, you.

By the way, I’m soon to be launching my own website selling just one shea-based product. When feeling a bit overwhelmed or like I can’t do it, I visit the websites of other black women like myself who have done it. I came here today to look at your site and just be inspired.

  6. I looked the company up. They have a lot of high profile investors like Ashton Kutcher and Karlie Kloss which explains the high price. My guess is the company plans to go after high dollar customers who will respond to these extravagant prices. So essentially the same products, but marketed to different markets.
