Introduce yourself!
E:
Hi, I’m Brownskin2601, 23 years old and I’m from France. I study law, but I write articles for a women’s magazine, “Culture Femme”. Moreover I have a blog and a YouTube channel about hair and fashion. Recently I started sewing and making jewelry. I love creative things.

Why did you make the decision to go natural?
E:
I have never relaxed my hair thanks to my mother. She didn’t want me to.

How would you describe your texture?
E:
My hair is mostly 4b/c, but thin.

Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
E:
I love twists! It’s my favorite hairstyle because I can keep them for 2 or 3 weeks. I use Oyin Handmade’s Burnt Sugar Pomade to do my twists. But sometimes I like to curl my hair with flexi rods or bantu knots. I use my homemade leave-in conditioner to define my curls.

What does wash day look like for you?
E:
My wash day is very simple. I moisturize my hair with a hair mask or oil. Before washing my hair, I separate it into several sections to avoid knots. Then I wash my hair with my homemade shampoo and my homemade conditioner (before I was using “Les Secrets De Loly’s Shampoo and Conditioner). I then detangle and moisturize my hair with my homemade leave-in conditioner. When I have free time I do my twists with the Oyin Burnt Sugar Pomade.

Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style.
E:
When I don’t have a lot of time I do a bun or a twist out…It’s quick and easy.

How do you combat shrinkage?
E:
After washing my hair I twist or braid it. However, when I do my twists I use the banding method. The most effective technique is to braid with cotton yarn.

What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
E:
The hair on the sides of my forehead! I’m afraid to lose my hair in this area so I avoid tension such as all the hairstyles that require to pulling the hair or wearing a headband for instance.

What are 2 do’s for your texture?
E:
Playing with the shrinkage when I want my hair to be shorter. Curling my hair with bantu knots or twist outs.

What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
E:
Straightening my hair because it becomes very dry. Not detangling my hair after washing it.

Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?

  1. You have pretty hair. I think I have thin hair, too, but only in some places. It is strange to me that my strands are very thick in some places, and very thin in others.

I had to laugh to myself because I can tell you probably have a favorite side (of your face) by the way you pose. I do the exact same thing and it’s not even on purpose.

  2. Gorgeous! Finally a 4b/c beauty with not so thick hair like me! It takes special effort for me to retain length but I’m getting there :). My hair is so fine it breaks when the wind blows. Protective styling is my friend. But I cant do braids because like her my hairline is very fine and gets thin with any tension. With not so dense and fine hair, more of our strands are exposed and succeptable to damage, where as ladies with super thick hair have much more of a protective layer and buffer… Please show more 4b/c for inspiration!

    1. I always find it interesting when naturals talk about their hair being so fragile that it breaks by just looking at it. Have you ever been relaxed & how was your hair when it was relaxed? I would imagine it was even more fragile & prone to breakage. Makes me wonder how one was able to deal w having a relaxer for so long knowing it wasn’t doing anything but causing more damage & breakage.

      1. My hair is the same texture 4b/c thin and fragile. To answer your question, my relaxed hair broke off like crazy. I kept doing it because like so many we are taught that straight hair is more presentable and “neat”. Believe me had I known being natural was this easy and carefree I would have ditched the relaxer much much sooner. Remember not everyon relaxes thier hair by choice.

      2. You know, I look back and think the same thing myself lol. My aunt was a beautician and always did my hair. My mom had carpal tunnel and relaxed my hair at 9 because she just couldn’t do it. My aunt would relax my fine strands and it’d look like a hot mess. I was so jealous of the other girls who got perms whose hair would just grow and grow… and actually hold a curl! My hair was super flat and basically nonexistent. I would immediately pull it into a bun after she was done and wore it like that every.single.day. On special occasions I wore a high ponytail lol. I HATED my hair. And most of the women in my family on my mom’s side have super fine, baby soft, fragile kinks. The perm was MURDER on my hair. I finally woke up in college and started pressing instead. Boy what a difference! I suddenly had hair! And bounce! And more length. But of course after years of fire hot heat my hair broke off horribly again, just as with the chemicals. I wore weaves for about 4 years and then decided to perm again when I moved to Houston because of the humidity. BIG MISTAKE. After only 6 months my hair was falling out again. So I took the plunge and big chopped. THANK GOD I finally saw the light!! We are only doing what we’ve been taught – that there is NO alternative and our hair is UNACCEPTABLE in its natural state and UGLY. I am so grateful I UNLEARNED those lies! Peace 🙂

  3. beautiful hair and pics! i went to your blog and tried translating to english so that i could read your beauty regimen and it wouldn’t translate…help!

  4. I too have thin hair/fine hair and it’s good to see other naturals with hair that’s not as full/dense as so many others! Everyone sees our hair and thinks, “You’ve got plenty of hair on your head!” But we know the difference when we do twist-outs and it’s not as full as we’d like it to be yet still embrace the head full of kinks and curls as they are! Cute styles mama! Thanks for the “to the point” interview and LOTS of pics!!! 😀
