Braids have a long tradition within the African diaspora, serving as both creative expression and protection for textured strands. Today the style is replicated on celebrities and the runways of fashion week while giving little or no credit to its roots in African and diaspora culture. However, this does not stop the sheer talent and innovation of black hair stylists, from futuristic patterns to cartoons and words. Here’s a look at some of the most intricate braid pattern designs we’ve found.

Omg ? the Mickey mouse one was so cute. This takes skills.
Love these intricate designs but… BUT. I am waiting to see a hair braider who is conscious of traction alopecia. My TWA is is growing out and I want to start braiding my hair in some designs as a protective styling option but everything I see is snatching those edges back. This is something I hope the the talented braiders in our community address and find solutions for. Thank you!
