Black Comedienne Sheryl Underwood Slams Afro Hair on National Television

*An earlier version of this post stated that Sheryl Underwood called natural hair “nasty”. After listening to the audio again, we realize that Sheryl didn’t call natural hair nasty, but referred to Heidi Klum’s decision to save her children’s natural hair as “nasty”.

SherylUnderwoodFeatured

Comedienne Sheryl Underwood, who serves as one of the hosts of CBS’ daytime talk show The Talk, recently referred to afro hair as “nappy” and referred to Heidi Klum’s decision to save her bi-racial children’s natural hair as “nasty”. She also referred to Caucasian hair as “beautiful long silky straight.”

Chantal of the blog Born Again Natural gives the break down:

The topic was about saving your children’s hair, brought up because Heidi Klum revealed that when she cuts her children’s afros, she saves their clipped hair in a sealed baggie.  Sheryl Underwood, going for the joke, made a semi-disgusted face and said:

“Why would you want to save AFRO hair?”

Amidst the mild laughter, she went on to say that women don’t necessarily run to the beauty supply store in search of what she referred to as “nappy, nasty hair”.    When Sara Gilbert tried to point out that she, like a lot of mothers, liked to save her children’s hair, Sheryl quipped, “But your child’s hair is silky and straight!”

Even though the subject quickly changed (because the joke had obviously died), it apparently didn’t bother Aisha Tyler, the other Black woman at the table, to have natural Black hair described as “nappy” and “nasty”.

Really, Ms. Underwood?  A child’s hair isn’t worth saving unless it’s silky and straight?

Here is a clip of the incident.

It is very jarring to hear natural hair disparaged so publicly and with such disgust. What are your thoughts ladies?

1. To disrespect black people in front of other [races] of people is nothing new. Black [male] comedians do it on a regular basis. The hurtful thing about it this time is when Ms. Underwood did it on a national syndicated talk show with other races of women. Hair for some African American women is a sensitive topic, and she didn’t take into consideration how her jokes would affect others. I’ll just chalk it up to ignorance, forgive her, and move forward. #Lovingmyself

2. I am often struck by the tone of many of the comments posted on BGLH. Although far from the majority, there are a significant number of comments that are spiteful and vindictive, this is not an accepting or nurturing community.

I prefer the community at Curly Nikki’s blog and will restrict my natural hair browsing to that site.

3. I heard of/saw all the backlash from the natural community before I got the chance to see the clip. I just watched this for the first time to see what the hoopla was all about. I paid close attention to what I felt when she said it. And I truly see what many of us were upset about. Good grief, those words she said literally made me cringe…they sounded so foreign because I’ve been away from that kind of thinking for many years now. But my reaction also made me realize something about myself…like how far I’ve come and how renewed my mind really is.

4. I think that people really need to listen carefully before they post or comment on a post. 1. She is a Comedian, so there is no “SELF HATE”. 2. She was quite clear in stating people don’t go to the “Hair Place” to get AFRO weaved in. 3. Hiedi Klum was speaking as a mother that “SAVES EVERYTHING”. Sheryl Underwood, who if you know anything about LOVES her Blackness, was speaking as a comedienne who doesn’t have any children.

1. I saw the show and Sara Gilbert tried to save her from more damming comments but she(Sheryl) said that Sara was right to save her kids hair since they had that straight, silky pretty stuff, I say shame on Sheryl for that. I hope that she will watch her words more and realize that putting down the Creator’s work isn’t funny.

5. he made a “Mistake”. She made a ill joke trying to be funny. She has apologized for her actions. There is NO ONE reading this article that has NEVER made a remark or comment and lived to regret it. So stop tearing this woman down. She made a mistake and as JESUS would do, “FORGIVE”. And if yall can’t, then I have to ask, Are you truly a Christian or person of GOD?

6. I am Afropean and from the outside, i think my sisters in the US are ones of the most obssessed ones when it comes to black hair and the relationship they have with it.

I don’t even understand why an actress, someone, anyone would have a say in somebody elses hair. It’s personal for god sake.

You don’t go talking about what someone is doing with her own body, hair, ect…. That’s kinda of intrusive and in that particuliar case, that shows some serious self hatred signs.

She should have refrained from talking about it, it shows how obsessive black hair has become in the AA community, just like skin tone when weight and its subsequent health problems should be at the top of all physical concerns in all communities.

Let Heidi do whatever she wants to do with her own child’s hair and focus on your own physical attributes, be it hair or else…

1. Exactly living in Europe all my life black women thank God do not have these hair issues that our American companions have.
Thankfully we wear our hair any method, any style any way and we are not judged by it and long may that continue.

7. I am caucasian and I have “silky straight” hair. And if you had it, you wouldn’t want it. It is limp, fine, and won’t hold a curl. Pins and clips just slide out of it. The slightest bit of oil or damp makes it stringy. I cannot wear a ribbon, headband, or barrette…they fall out. I cannot wear it up or in a pony tail or pulled back as it won’t stay, the hair slides out. But it is “silky” and it is “straight” and what I wouldn’t give for a little texture!

I live in Africa. All around me are women with beautiful natural black hair…but they are the poorer women. The ones with money get weaves, lighten their skin, do what they can to be imitation white women. SHAME on you, Sheryl, for fuelling the notion that being black and having black hair isn’t as good as Caucasian: I think it is not only every bit as good, I think it is light years better than the limp, stringy mess I have to deal with every day!

1. Refreshing to hear from a non black perspective, your post I agreed with but I just want to say that whilst many black women wear weaves its a great misconception that we do so to look more white.
The fact is weaves are worn because it’s less friction on your natural hair giving it time to grow without manipulation-that’s why black women use weave as a protective style, they also choose weaves because it’s easy,no fuss and simply because we like the style…maybe if there were weaves that were more agro designed black women would wear them but unfortunately that option is not there.

1. That’s bull maxine. Black women wear weaves to look like WHITE WOMEN. Just look at doll tests and children wanting to look like the lightest and blondest dolls and pointing them out as good and pretty over the browner dolls. I even had this mind set as a child and a young women, and I have witnessed it among many other african american girls. It is real.

1. Some black women do,most black women who wear weave do not do it to look like white women, straight, silky hair is not only exclusive to white women, your presuming that just because one wears straight hair, the association is to look white
I know thousands of natural women who straighten their hair,do they get a pass because the next day their hair is back to kinky lol
The doll test is the doll test but don’t base that on something so unrelated as a woman who wants to rock a weave, you are of the old school where black women probably get called out as wannabe whites because she chooses to dye her hair another color but it’s a pretty sad state of affairs when black women can not add other styles or methods to their hair and all have to look the same way.

2. @Naturefro…I gotta call BS on your statement “Black women wear weaves to look like WHITE WOMEN”! I wear braids and wigs because I am frankly too lazy to put hours of work into my Natural hair. Doesn’t mean I’m trying to look white, it just means I have better things to do than get up at 5 a.m. and spend 2 hours and $75 worth of product trying to get defined curls when my curls don’t WANT to be defined. I’ve been reading the various comments for several weeks on this site and other sites and have come the conclusion that yet again we as Black Women are our own worst enemies. We have taken something as “natural” as our hair and turned it into another way we discriminate against each other. SMH…as I’ve heard several posters say (admittedly, a little defensively when one of the Natural Hair Police jumps on their case for relaxing or worse cutting their “crowning glory”) IT’S ONLY HAIR. My goal (can’t and WON’T) speak for anyone else, is to have healthy hair, which I do. But I also have hair that puffs up like a cotton ball in the Midwest humidity. That makes me want to move to a more temperate climate, not become white woman. I want hair that looks cute, sexy, or classy, whichever mood I happen to be in. If achieving that look involves me throwing a wig on or wearing long braids makes people think I’m trying to be white, then that’s THEIR (uninformed) opinion. My opinion, the only one that matters to me? I look cute.

1. I know plenty of black women who wear BLONDE wigs and blue eye contacts. No one says shyt to them, but lo and behold if someone dare wear their natural hair. Are you going to try and tell me they are not trying to look white? These are the girls who are just trying to hard, most don’t want to come off as that obvious. Denice there is somethign wrong with your thinking to. You are in denial. What is wrong with undefined afro hair? I DO NOT define my curls and the natural women I know could care less about that. And guess what? I live in one of the most humid climates in the united states. I wear my hair poofy and proud and I see nothing wrong with that or with someone defining their curls. You talk of it as if it is a bad thing when their is nothing wrong with that hair type. The natural women I know do not straighten their hair. Everyone is different whether they like updos, different hair color, defined curls, twist outs, short hair, long hair, braids, or afro hair. I don’t see a problem with that. But wearing another race of hair is just wrong and disgusting, I personally hate hair weaves I could never wear them and think that you’d have to have mental issues to put those wigs on. Wanna look cute my ass.. your problems go deeper than that. And yes maxine, black women wear alot of indian, mongolian and brazilian hair. But it is the white women black women aspire to look like. That I know is true for many black women for a fact. When I was growing up I never heard black girls wish they had an indian girls hair or an asians hair. It was always WHITE GIRL HAIR. I never seen black children put shirts on their heads and say they had flowing hair like an asian girls. It was always LIKE A WHITE GIRL. I never heard black girls say when their hair was permed out that they had hair like the spanish girls or the asians. IT WAS HAIR LIKE A WHITE GIRLS! I never heard them speak of someone’s “good hair” being like an indian hair, it was like a WHITE GIRLS HAIR.

2. Lol there is nothing wrong with liking a white girls hair,it is what it is.you are ignorant and set in your ways to assume all black women who wear straightened hair or weave do so because she wants to look white, after all white women are not the only ones with straight hair..so you can not talk for others but yourself.
Your hair does not define you so just because one has natural hair that does not mean she is more pro black then the sister who doesn’t,other women can have their hair in braids and whatever style she wants but black women should be resigned to having their hair one way-no,we have options like everybody else so stop putting limitations on our hair,God did make us with our natural hair but he also made us have freedom of choice but your ignorance can’t see that.

3. Maxine you need to go back and read my comment. I already addressed what you regurgitated. I found your comment pointless and presumptuous. Yeah, yeah, yeah maxine. There is nothing wrong with liking a white girls hair. I hear ya. I guess that explains why the vast majority of black women aspire to have their hair type. THERE IS NOTHING AT ALL WRONG WITH THAT. OKAY. IF YOU SAY SO. Go ahead and support dicrimination among the most oppressed group of people with wearing your weave maxine in the sake of looking cute all because of your white girl hair. I guess the majority of black girls who pick the white doll as being good and pretty over the black one are just as pro-black as I am. OK!

8. I’m really surprised at the level of hatred towards each other that is going on with these common. I don’t agree with what she said, I feel sorry for her. I don’t believe her apology is from her heart, but from her pocket. But why are the ladies turning on each other over this crap. This is prove that the master did an excellent job training us to turn on each other, to break each other down over small and unimportant things. I love myself , my hair, my color and my shape. It makes me who I am. Which is a strong black woman, wife, mother daughter and friend. It’s time to really break the chains!!!!!,

9. Are we really surprised? After all, she is one among those who wear wigs and weaves as “protective styles”. (And with that, I’m gonna have to raise the church finger and tip up out of here.)

10. I think Sheryl Underwood illustrated beautifully that even people who claim to be educated (i.e. book sense) can still be terribly ignorant. And as for the comment about her being ugly, I don’t think it has anything to do with her skin color or broad nose, she just honestly has man features, she’s just plain unattractive, if she was light skinned she’d still be unattractive….imho

11. No, Sheryl Underwood’s statement wasn’t a “sin”, nor was that said or even implied.
What was stated was a principle: Raise your hand if you’ve NEVER said or done something inappropriate, unwarranted, or downright dumb.
Finally, if one wishes to continue wasting precious time and energy being angry at Sheryl after she has apologized than that speaks rather negatively about that person, not
Ms. Underwood.
PEACE OUT!!
[Read and Understand. Understand what you read]

12. Not to sound superficial but she is the ugliest woman I have ever seen, she obviously lacks self love so who would listen to a word she says anyhow.

13. Some things are better left unsaid. Your comment was just as distasteful (more so in some aspects) as Sheryl’s comment. What is it about her that makes her not beautiful as Aisha? Is it her complexion? Is her nose too “ethnic” for your taste? Is her weight not deemed beautiful? #PotMeetKettle #ExamineYourself

14. Sheryl Underwood apologized to the Black Community this morning on the Steve Harvey Show. I believe the apology was sincere and I say we extend forgiveness to our wayward sister. She admitted her mistake, now its for us to forgive and move on. “…Let him [or her] without sin cast the first stone…”

1. Why don’t you do what you want, and leave other adults to make up their own minds and do as they please? M’kay? Good!

And btw, no one is accusing Sheryl of ‘sin’, just of overdosing on her own kool-aid as a mouthpiece on TV and forgetting restraint and dignity. We all make mistakes, many on TV aren’t stupid enough to do it in such a brazen and idiotic manner.

2. Ooh, creates more quostiens than answers. She must have been prepared for it, did she cause the raft to capsize, she wouldn’t have known whether they would be half-dead, or fully dead. Like it a lot, nice piece.

15. I was not a fan or her before the comments and now I know I will never be. It’s sad how ignorant she could be on television. I pray that GOD opens her eyes so that she can see everyone is beautiful in different ways.

16. I know what she said was rude, but when is Sheryl not obscure. I am natural, have been for years and I just think that the community tends to be over sensitive. We cannot let words said for shock-value outrage us in this way. Brush your shoulders off, continue to be fabulous and keep it moving. To each her own! I love me, Sheryl doesn’t have to love me.

17. I’m sorry, but while I don’t agree with what Sheryl Underwood said, some people here are just plain rude. Yes, her statement was ignorant and clearly a form of self-hatred, but there is no need to comment on her physical appearance. Really, it just brings you down to her level.

18. insecure nappy chicks… please go back to smoking the thing that makes you so high and leave the rest of us alone

1. insecure permed white-wannabe chicks… please go back to smoking whatever it is that makes you so deluded and ignorant and leave us lovely intelligent naturals alone. You have no nerve making your daft comments with that synthetic horse hair hanging off your head!

1. SYNTHETIC HAIR DOES NOT COME FROM HORSES CLOWN… IS THAT WHAT YOU WEAR CAMERON THE HORSE HAIR?

2. I agree more than 100%. I work in the logging insrutdy and I urge contractors and crew leaders to be real. I feel emotional intelligence and emotional honesty builds trust which strengthens the crew to tackle the challenges of doing business in the woods. What I find in the woods is the historical tough guy, stiff upper lip I can do anything attitude. I try to coach my leaders to share what the reality is, it’s scarey and together we can get it done. When this honesty takes place you can see a transformation of the entire crew, not just in their relationship with the crew supervisor or owner, but between themselves. A little emotional honesty can strengthen the crew and save time and money.I have heard it many times There’s no crying in logging but I disagree wholeheartedly.Thank you for this wonderful post that will hopefully bring awareness to an important element of building strong teams, whether in the woods or in the boardroom.

19. I would have loved for The Real to have still been on air to hear how’d they would break that down. I don’t think Loni Love would have let Sheryl get by with that. That foolishness is so peanut gallery to me. #SMH

20. her words spoke to how black comedians have no respect for blk ppl or themselves. Russell Simmons / Harriet Tubman…. Cedric the entertainer / Rosa Parks…. and the story of Dr. Dray giving 35 million dollors to USC a white university , that don’t need it when HBCU’s are closing down… but we’re so blind that we keep financially supporting these fools…. hmmmm but who’s really the fool…..

1. Amen! And as much support that our people give them to become successful, out of solidarity, much of it is not returned (invested) to uplift and empower our people and that is why I do not support a lot of our celebrities anymore.

21. I saw this episode when it first aired and the re run. I’m not a fan of “the talk” tv show. When I heard Sheryls’ comments aout black hair as compared to white hair, I was not surprised. I did thinnk how ignorant she sound and I was embarrassed for her. I wear my hair natural. I am not ashamed of my hair type of my skin tone. It just goes to show that with all the opportunity that she has to educate herself about her heritage, she still chooses and evidently feels like she is not good enough. What a waste.

1.
This kind of troubles me, because she feels it is a joke.Black hair nappy, kinky, knotty or what have you is our heritage. You save the hair because it reminds you of your child it shows love. I cut my grandson hair over 20years ago and still have it in a plastic bag, every now and then I have to look at it

22. I think her comment was a display of her subconscience. Its true, you wont find anyone of another race looking for afro hair at a beauty supply store(at least not many people)….but that is because EVERY other ethnicity on earth seems to be satisfied with their natural hair except people with afro kinky hair.So those of us who are not satisfied look to weaves, and relaxers as a remedy. Sheryl Underwood says she doesnt have self hate, and I saw a pic of her with her natural hair….but she wouldnt dare wear it on “The Talk” show. Why? because women with Afro hair have been brainwashed to believe that our hair is not “professional, neat, or kempt” looking….therefore we must relax, weave, or wig it to look “presentable”. Its sad but true….shows even lose ratings if the audience doesnt like a womans hair…especially if she has afro hair.

23. I believe sheryl must be bald underneath that wig… She is a damn idiot to even say such a thing about the hair of people of African heritage to which she belongs… TOTAL IDIOTTTT!!!!

24. No, what’s really “nasty” is Wesley with that wig on.

She’s a hideous woman with a hideous attitude. Well….at least she’s consistent *sigh*

25. I am not easily offended, but what bothered me so much about this remark was its setting. Again, poor taste in humor doesn’t bother me as much as poor judgement does. The setting, in what appears to be an environment of mainly older, Caucasian women, broadcast to mainly older Caucasian women, was not the forum for such a comment, in jest or not. Ms Underwood is reinforcing stereotypes that most of us on this forum have to contend with on a regular basis. This is what makes her comments especially hurtful.

1. that beautiful black woman in the white house gets called every kind of names simply because she is who she is (recently saw gold digger, skank etc. on facebook recently) so open your fucking eyes and stop being so naive

2. The most inflammatory part of her comment was when she compared the silky straight hair to the nasty nappy beady hair. Its that right there that got my blood boiling.

26. While I don ‘t condone what she said, I understand that her comedy is provocative and based on cultural stereotypes. If we are sending out the police on her, we ought to do the same when Joan Rivers makes culturally insensitive jokes about other ethnicity, including African-Americans.

27. I wonder why Aisha didn’t speak up. I’m guessing she didn’t want to be involved in the backlash. Or maybe she agrees.

I can’t say I’m surprised by anything anyone says about natural hair anymore. No matter how popular or trendy we think it’s become, it’s still not the norm and not accepted by everyone.

28. It is obvious that Sheryl Underwood does not have self love. She needs to be replaced on that show for spouting off such disdain for what is underneath her wig. Obviously she finds her own hair to be the nasty beads which she speaks of. She is very offensive!

29. Yes, she said sth that offended you, but seriously some of these comments are just as hateful, no need for all the abuse..

30. She’s obviously ashamed of her roots and a “wanna be white” she needs to take that awful weave or wig off her head and let’s see what HER hair REALLY looks like!! #dumbblackwoman!

31. Okay, I watched it, and Sheryl is a brainwashed bimbo sellout. Afro hair is unique and there is something spiritual about it that I am even trying to get clarity on. I’m a natural Afro, and I’ve saved ALL of my hair since I went natural (2007) before this recent fad. I don’t know what I must do with it but until I do, I will preserve it.

32. I read this website pretty regularly, and this is the first time I’ve felt compelled to comment. Unfortunately, Ms. Underwood goes for the shock factor on the show. If you have seen her on tv or listened to her on the radio, you will quickly learn that this type of jaw-dropping talk is nothing new to her. That is how she makes her money. I do think the comment was in poor taste; however, I feel that way about much of what comes out of her mouth. Ms. Underwood is a very accomplished and EDUCATED woman. She knows better than to make comments like this, but she does it to survive, to make her money… I feel rather bad for her. She has a slave mentality, do what massa likes and maybe I won’t get beat today, only she is playing up massa beauty in hopes that they will like her enough to keep her on the show. Media messages like this frustrate me to no end.

33. I too am very offended by Sheryl’s comment however, I do realize that ignorance runs very deep because if she took off someone else’s hair that she so proudly wears she would find that she has a head full of that “nappy nasty hair ” growing out of her scalp. Guess what Sheryl, you can glue it, sew it, buy it but at the end of the day you are still growing kinky, nappy, natural hair. Love the person God made you.

34. I too am very offended by Sheryl’s comment however, I do realize that ignorance runs very deep because if she took off someone else’s hair that she so proudly wears she would find that she has a head full of that “nappy nasty hair ” growing out of her scalp. Guess what Sheryl, you can glue it, sew it, buy it but at the end of the day you are still growing

35. It is very sad that she had the opportunity and the platform to tout the beauty of African American hair in it’s natural state and she chose to criticize it. I saved my son’s curl from his first haircut and would slap the spit outta her mouth for daring to call it nasty to my face. Nappy is a term I can accept, along with kinky and coily but nasty is one thing my natural hair is not! She needs to start loving herself and appreciating blackness in all it’s beauty.

36. Wooow…this unthoughtful comment has made such an uproar! When i first read it my reaction was for poor Heidi! If someone said that to me about my kids hair or anything not being as beautiful as someone elses, the switch would be flipped. Anyone who lives in the real world can see that regardless of the rose colored film of togetherness that the media tries to paint, we are still very much fearful and hating as a people in general. Push hair and race aside. Who publicly compares one persons childs anything over another??!! If i were in the conversation i would have mentioned that all children are precious! and hopefully particularly so to their parents! Bravo Heidi for living passed the color barrier and teaching your kids that if noone else, their mom loves them head to toe.
And yes we are all instantly taken back to the meanspirited nappy headed comments of our youth when we read this type of Thom Foolery! however, if miss underwood is up on social media, she will notice that there is a large community of black women with natural hair that instead of identifying with, she has totally offended. There is a certain finese when it comes to comedy, a perfect timing has to be met. This was inapropriate, horrid timing, and completely uncalled for. And if she has children, absorbing this type of attitude from the person whos suppose to be their first line of defense…. well i just hope they dont end up being bullied or even the bully. Im very disturbed.

1. I had the same thoughts as well when I first read about it. I felt bad for Heidi Klum, because she has a white child aside from her children with Seal and to imply on TV that Sara’s white child’s hair is more worth saving than Heidi’s own biracial children’s “nappy” hair is hurtful to her as a mother. Even if Sheryl feels this way (probably brought on by her own self-esteem issues), this is definitely a case of when “Keepin’ it real goes wrong.” I also hope that as a European white woman, Klum understands that this is not what ALL African American women are about.

2. Yes, it completely was uncalled for. After Sharon was finishing reading about Heidi’s practices and SU started to smile and looked like she wanted to say something funny I bet everyone thought it was going to be about the quirkiness of subject but to go on about the type of hair itself and how its nasty…i mean that is just truly odd and embarrassing because it was not funny and like you said, uncalled for.

37. I think some people are over reacting. Sheryl is a comedian. Yes most of us have kinky hair. So what….it’s still beautiful. Why we trip on hair is beyond me. And why is it (not) ok for Sheryl to talk about kinky hair in public; but it’s ok for millions of black women to go out and spend millions of dollars (collectively) on(STRAIGHT) hair? I think that’s being a hypocrite! As for Sheryl I’ve never found her to me funny. She reminds me of Moms Mabley….who most young people probably don’t know who she is. However Moms Mabley was actually funny during her time. I don’t get to see The Talk very much; but when I do I cringe every time I see Sheryl (no offense) but she’s ugly as H. Aisha is beautiful but when I see the show I get mad because I always think why can’t they get another BEAUTIFUL BLACK WOMAN to be host the show instead of Sheryl

1. Some things are better left unsaid. That comment was just as completely distasteful (more so) as Sheryl’s comment. What about her makes her not beautiful? Is it the tone of her skin? Is it her nose too ethnic for you? #PotMeetKettle #ExamineYourself

1. What was funny about that? Oh, natural hair is not worth saving but, giiiirrrrl, keep your babies silky straight hair. Ha ha ha ha…still not funny.

38. To all you women with perms, weaves, wigs, etc, just shut the f*ck up. Yall aint got sh*t to say.

39. Having realized that your post has misrepresented what was said, the responsible thing to do is to remove it.

1. I agree completely. This entire thing is ridiculous and irresponsible!! This post needs to be disabled and people need to reevaluate themselves. I’ve never read such hateful things……

2. Actually, much like any other publication (newspapers, journals, tv), BGLH revised and pointed out the revision, so….stop with the hysterical stanning.

1. Again…..irresponsible reporting. I don’t care if other outlets do the same thing. I’m sure most people didn’t even realize that the original statement was revised. But it’s too late anyway. In the future BGLH please do a little more research first (the entire conversation was barely a minute long!!). In today’s world, it’s so easy to go to the original source. So do like I do before you make up your mind get the facts first hand. At least you will know exactly what you are angry about. Never base your opinion on what a site said about what another site said about what Sheryl said. And before you mention the video that was provided, read the disclaimer proceeding it. That’s all.

1. in any case, no matter what the post said about her comment, it doesn’t detract from the fact that the video was posted. most of us who took offense with her comment actually watched the video and heard what she said from her own mouth. that speaks volumes all by itself.

40. The only good reason to discuss this woman is to brainstorm ways to de-fund her and/or her platform. Else we are merely driving attention and traffic towards her shameful, shameless minstrelsy. So, ideas? 🙂

41. I’m not surprised in the least nor is it particularly jarring to me for this conversation to be aired so publicly. Natural hair movement or not, this world and the people in it are still operating the way that I think they are. I don’t even have the energy to get mad anymore.

42. Wow and oh my! I want her to fist have the courage to be truly authentic and take off her wig to reveal her true self. See I think this is a truly big deal. She reminds of our good ignorant klan member Imus…remember when he threw that word around. Different soldier same sword, and frankly she should be punished. She insulted everyone with hair is not straight, she truly made her guest uncomfortable about something that meant a lot to her and Sheryl plain old rude. Now in retaliation I could stoop to her level and find a few choice words to describe her that I am oh so sure would leave her with even less self esteem and self worth than she already possesses, but I won’t. I will hit her where it hurts…purse strings. I will email the network, and never watch her show. I will never go to any of her shows and I think I should drop a note to Essence, Ebony, Black Enterpise, all the hair mags about her and only her. She truly displayed beastly behavior for all to see. I know so many people say this is not a big deal but it is. I encourage you all not to let this slide. Don’t just shake your head, shut this type of foolishness completely down. She can not be allowed to run amuck.

Ms. Underwood,

You are to never and I mean never speak about any type of black hair, person or afro entity with such utter disrespect. You are never to project your own insecure ignorant opinion out and onto the rest of us. You see you do make it hard for us all. Here is why, you opened your mouth and sent some fool to work thinking it was the right thing to do to use the word “nappy” or ” ugly” toward another African American or biracial person. You set everyone up for failure with your comments. Your project degratory ideology out for lesser intelligent entities among us to absorb. For this, you must pay. Ms. Underwoodmimturn my back on you and your wig. You are alone. Your comedy was hurtful and cruel, mean and rude. We no longer count you among us in anyway. You should examine the laughter, it is probably at you and not with you.

I consider you expelled from us.

1. The first time I’ve ACTUALLY seen someone have their “Black card” pulled! I knew it could happen – but dang! You actually did it!! And I must agree – it was warranted! LOL

43. Isn’t it a shame that the White woman appreciates her children’s Afro hair more than the Black woman??? She took it too far, but that is clearly how she feels. Should she lose her job for it? Should we just stop watching the show? Maybe. Some people will never see how stuck they are & we may just have to leave it at that. I think it’s a bit weird to keep your child’s hair…all of it, Afro or straight. My opinion, but On top of everything, she was just rude to her guest. There needs to be a follow up discussion on that show about natural hair to ‘make up’ for this.

44. I just completed a feedback form on the CBS website expressing my distaste for the words of Ms. Underwood. I encourage others to express their discontent as well.

45. Not surprised at all. She is a sad woman who just wants the almighty dollar. The things some will do for a laugh and some cash she needed to take some of those wigs off her head and let her brain breath lol.

46. People are entitled to opinions, yes. But how often is afro hair called nasty, ugly or whatever? I wouldn’t pay her any mind if she said “saving all hair is nasty” but the fact that she says straight and silky hair is only beautiful is sad, because I know she really meant that.

47. I absolutely LOVE comedy. Generally, I think nothing is off limits if the comedian can word it properly. But I must admit, Sheryl’s comments were not funny and really did seem to go for the jugular of black people just to get a laugh from white folks. She has NEVER been funny to me. Her humor is mean and vulgar and reeks of self hatred. She has obviously been wearing a wig since she started and she looks ridiculous with absolutely no texture in it. It just doesn’t look real. Aiesha Tyler should be admonished also for cosigning on that Uncle Tom BS!

1. I totally agree Andrea, but come on, would you really expect Aiesha to say anything about what Sheryl said, since she’s Miss Dartmouth graduate and married to a white man too, Aiesha definitely ain’t defending any black causes from what I can see. And you can see the other white women on the panel, which I think includes Marie Osmond, looking at Sheryl like she’s crazy. I thought their facial expressions said a lot. Like many have said, what else can you expect from Sheryl Underwood, never liked her and still don’t. She is like many other black, self-loathing comedians, such as Chris Rock, J Anthony Brown, and the like. J Anthony Brown is the same way, always picking on black folks and talking about his love of white women, and notice how NONE of these comedians are much to look at themselves, yet they always take shots at other people. Really sad in my opinion, smh! It would be nice to have some black folks on these types of shows that actually have some damn commmon sense and some class, and that Lonnie Love ain’t much better!!

1. How does “since she’s Miss Dartmouth graduate married to a white man” support your ridiculous argument that Aiesha wouldn’t defend any black causes? What on earth does being a Dartmouth graduate have anything to do with her silence? Or being married to a white man?

How sad.

1. Thats what I thought when I saw the comment,to comment or bring up the fact that a panel member of whom is black has a white partner has absolutely nothing to do with the matter,if anything it show that, that same person is equally as ignorant as the person she talks about.

1. how would u like it if someone called ur face ugly amd nasty on national television? better yet, your child’s face? and dnt give us this idk crap. im willing to bet youd be livid and highly upset.

2. Screw YOU! There’s nothing real nor funny about what she said and people are not being too sensitive. In the immortal words of Saara:

“DUMB WORDS FROM A DUMB WOMAN LOOKING FOR A LAUGH ANYWHERE SHE CAN FIND IT!”

3. She’s not even close to being funny and has never been funny. Ignorant and stupid, but never funny.

48. Thats self hate at its lowest. i know all naturals have kinky coily and even stubborn hair but nappy shouldn’t be associated with our cultural heritage and beauty.

In my Humble opinion i can sum it up to…

DUMB WORDS FROM A DUMB WOMAN LOOKING FOR A LAUGH ANYWHERE SHE CAN FIND IT!

49. I’m not denying her a right to her opinion, but did she have to be so derogatory when she said it? Nasty? Nappy? Really? She needs to start in the mirror and learn to love herself so she will stop making rude tactless comments. I don’t agree with every natural head of hair or every processed or fake head of hair I see but you can best believe I wouldn’t make such rude comments. If she can’t be tactful perhaps she needs to keep her mouth shut. Makes herself look hateful and bitter.

50. I’ve always found her to be annoying, and ignorant; not surprised in the least. She in no way, shape, or form represents the ‘black woman’, but rather, is a perfect portrait of self-hate. She needs help. ASAP

51. As usual her kind is seeking attention! She is an ignorant woman and have not much to say or to be desired as to what she calls art. She is to be pitied and I hope she get her desires with her wigs and her chemicals she uses to straighten her hair and bleach her skin…

52. Sheryl does not realize she is being used as black face in 2013! She really believes she is funnyto bad most blacks just believe it’s funny looking and no one will tell her the truth. When you become over night rich you should keep someone around to straight up always tell you the truth and when you”re out of order

1. Elizabeth: “being used”?? How about she’s making money (and we can’t blame her for that). Would any of us have turned down the chance to be on a nationally syndicated talk show?? If you are in the entertainment business….I think not (most people would go for it because those kind of opportunities seldom come around). They hired Sheryl as a comedian; not for her style, hair, or fashion sense. That being said….I don’t think Sheryl is funny, and over the years never have thought she was funny. I love comedy; but would never pay a dime to attend one of her shows.

53. I’ve never found Sheryl to be entertaining as she just seemed extra basic, loud, and sophomoric to me so this comment from her really isn’t shocking. Her talent is minimal and she needs to entertain the white masses somehow. What does impress me is that she’s managed to continue looking like Wesley Snipes in To Wong Foo despite the steady paycheck.

54. She is not happy or comfortable with who God made her. She doesn’t believe that she is good enough with the kinky hair or the dark skin God gave her. She clearly does not love herself, but I don’t blame her. I blame her mother, father, grandparents, aunts, uncles and other family members who did not validate her as a child. So she grew up thinking and feeling “less than” because of her looks. She was probably teased and taunted and as a result, she was taught to believe that something was wrong with the way she looked. She was told that long, silky straight hair was better and more desirable. That’s what she was told and believed that, unfortunately. Hopefully, she will come to the realization that she is “enough” as is. Until she does that,…. her beliefs and actions will always be the same. This is sad, but so very true. She is not alone in her thinking, though. Sooo many ethnic women think and feel the same way about themselves. WAKE UP BLACK WOMEN!!! Realize that you ARE enough just the way you are. You are beautiful and so is your hair no matter if it’s curly, kinky, wavy or straight!

1. You know, I need to apologize for the name-calling I engaged in my previous post. Kendra is absolutely right. Sheryl was never validated as a child. I actually isn’t her fault. She had to have grown up in a family that constantly told her that she was “less than” and internalized that message and grew up believing it. I of all people should know what that feels like as weight was always a issue in my family. I used food to “self-medicate” because I didn’t feel the love from family and friends. No. Sheryl needs help, patience and someone to guide her to self-actualization and self-love.

55. Who h$## does she think she is?!? She runs around with that…thing on her head doing a poor imitation of a white woman and as the nerve to talk about natural hair being nasty?!? And that smile! She looks like that talking horse, Mr. Ed!

1. Exactly. She can honor and uplift another groups hair texture while degrading her own. Backwards much? Also quite pathetic. It may have been ‘a joke’ but I feel like there was some truth in how she feels about afro textured hair. Money is the root of all evil and some people will go to low depths just to get some.

56. I saw that show and was furious and it’s clear that she thinks her own hair is ugly as she sports the most ugly wigs I’ve ever seen. There are mothers that value saving their kids hair of afro texture. God made that hair so it’s good, despite what Cheryl thinks.

57. She publicly humiliated her people with her self-hatred and ignorance. She needs to give a public apology on The Talk.

58. I have reviewed the video and I think she was going for a “laugh” but saying, if she did, our afro hair/natural hair is nasty or was it SAVING the hair was nasty. Looks like she meant afro hair. LET’S UPLIFT EACH OTHER NOT PUT DOWN…I get enough of that! #pitiful :X

59. Oh I’ve just read the amendment. So what did she actually say? You didn’t change the quotes.

60. What on earth? In addition to disparaging the type of hair that likely grows out of her head, she told a mother that her children’s hair wasn’t worth saving because it is “nasty”? Some black women seriously hate themselves. Heidi’s children are beautiful and have well kept hair from what I see because someone actually appreciates their hair and cares for it, like any mother should!

61. Whoever said slavery ended in 1865 very much so lied to us all, as demonstrated with Underwood’s comments. Mental slavery within our community persists, though I’m grateful to our natural community for attempting to combat it with all resources. With the limited opportunities for women of color to voice their opinions in the media, I hope Underwood understands how she has hurt the black community by reinforcing the negative emotions that SLAVE MASTERS put into our minds to begin with. She should know better.

1. SJ: I think referring to a “SLAVE MASTER” in 2013 is so ridiculous. I also think that people that keep referring to slavery are the ones that are (ACTUALLY STILL) in bondage. Yes I know the history of slavery; but I don’t pre-occupy my life with it. I’m a progressive, and don’t stay mired in the past

1. BeautifulBlackWomen, if you don’t understand how the past has influenced culture today, then you are either misinformed or in denial. It is a powerful thing to work past the limitations that institutionalized racism has put upon us, but slavery is EXTREMELY relevant to Underwood’s comments in particular. I’m not one to call out slavery for every little thing that happens to me, but the idea that a black woman such as Underwood can look at hair that has naturally grown out of her scalp (or rather, a child’s scalp) and view it as undesirable or unattractive has not been achieved on her own….That is the work of centuries of brainwashing done by none other than slave masters and their descendents. Please let’s not be foolish here. The poisonous ideals that slave masters put in our community are also the cause of colorism in the black community. They are so engrained in American culture that we are normalized to the messages that ads and other media have taught us about our appearance. Only recently have I viewed black women with kinky textures represented on TV in a normalized fashion. I strongly encourage you to take a history class in Africana or African American studies. It would do a lot to help you understand why Underwood said what she said. Best of luck to you.

62. She was just straight up wrong. I hope she retracts her comments and sincerely and formally apologizes. She just attacked and belittled and sub-humaned every black child on the planet. Talk about feeling very hurt and inferior. May she someday see the beauty in us, or live a lonely and secluded life so she won’t be able to influence others as she was influenced herself.

vertmoot.blogspot.com

63. Television producers always seems to find the most ignorant among our race to showcase the self hate in our community. Smdh.

64. Its clear that Ms. Underwood’s opinions are rooted and self-hate. She has a lot of issues to work through and if you have watched the talk you know what I am referring to. She really should try going natural because she probably doesn’t have any hair under that cheap dogged out wig.

65. Not surprised, never really cared for Sheryl underwood her jokes always played to the lowest of denominators so…shrugs. It is sad that they kicked off the lovely Holly Robinson Peete and put her on…smh

66. Do i think the comment was right? No. Do i think it was a joke done in poor taste? Yes. However i think it is her opinion and like anyone else, she is entitled to it. The fact that she is a black actress doesn’t mean she has to be a spokesperson for being natural. That is a preference. Everything isn’t for everyone.

1. No one said she’s the spokesperson. Also, she IS entitled to an opinion. But, come on. If your opinion is degrading and insulting then keep it to yourself. Do we not raise our children with manners and self respect anymore? Then again I almost feel sorry for her. Her irrelevant comments displayed exactly how she must feel about herself. I’m natural and damn proud. My pride is what allows me to shrug off sad little comments such as hers.

1. You should define your terms better in a natural hair forum — who do you mean by “you” wear weaves and perm and so on? Inaccurate, because duh, natural hair forum. (And who are you, anyway? If you’re not a “we” what is your motive in being IN the natural hair forum?)

67. SU is a disgrace. Self-hatred at its worst! For someone who was suffering from male pattern baldness, I know she’d jump at the chance to have some “nasty, nappy” hair if a doctor could help her grow her own hair. I was never a fan of her chitlin circuit antics anyway!

68. Even with the clarification, the comment is still hurtful. I’m also disappointed with Aisha Taylor for encouraging her with her laughter. Sheryl has some issues. I’m sure she was teased for her dark skin. Maybe that’s where some of the self-hatred comes.

1. Yeah. I feel badly about the level of outrage we’ve all had (and the terrible things people have said in reaction), but has always had a certain type of comedy that reinforces bad stereotypes in additions to all of the “I look like a man,” “look at how black I am” jokes. Coming from another black female comic, I might chalk it up to a misunderstanding; but I don’t think so with Sheryl.

69. Disgrace! If she would have said ‘Why would you save hair?’ That would have been different. But she said ‘Why would you save AFRO HAIR?’ Then went on to say ‘yes but it’s probably beautiful silky…..’ Come on that is just straight up disrespectful.

70. Actually, I never knew who Sheryl Underwood was. She obviously is not a good comedian and this is probably her first REAL stab at a national platform…definitely NOT an “A lister” I guess people like Underwood will use any opportunity to make a joke..even if it means insulting black women/children who chose to remain “natural”. It would have been a more balanced approach had she included her self and that really bad wig she was wearing or if she had made a joke about her gum line and short teeth. I do not believe she is ignorant or speaking from an ignorant place. I think she is a desperate black woman that is completely uncomfortable with her hair, skin, self in general and that makes it easy to make fun of or joke about her race/culture. As much as all of the woman were laughing it did appear that Isha Tyler was uncomfortable and was just waiting for the moment to pass. Seriously, I wish TV executives and creative directors would come up with a better format than 4-5 rich women talking about shit that is not important or empowering.

71. My family had an album of the different textures of our family’s hair. It was hair as far back as my great, great, grandmother. I loved that book! Some hair was kinky, wavy, black, gray, light colored, dark colored, etc. I remember when I was 8 years old looking at it often at my grandmother’s house because it represented from whence I came. Oddly enough, the book disappeared and a part of me went with it because I missed that linkage with my family history. Yes, clipping pieces of hair and putting it in a family album can be very informative and a keepsake.

72. I’m guessing you’re trying to fit in with the white girls, WELL GUESS WHAT HEFFA!!!! YOU LOOSE THAT JOB, YOU’LL BE WEARING THE NAPS AND GOOD LUCK FINDING A MAN WITH THAT ATTITUDE AND OBESITY!!! IT’S CALLED COMBING AND TAKING CARE OF IT!!!!

1. Lap: I hear you on the obesity. But….NEWSFLASH…there are lots of women that are slim, black, and beautiful….but they still can’t find a man. That’s life, and that’s a fact!!

73. She was attempting to make a joke in the WRONG forum. If this was Def Comedy Jam or Dave Chappelle it could have been funny. But in this forum, it comes across as ignorant and self-exposing.

Only GOD can judge what truth she believes in her heart.

74. Well to me she looks like a monkey in a wig, is that racist and ignorant enough for you Sheryll?

75. First reaction is she’s an idiot. Then to refer to Sarah Gilbert’s children hair as beautiful and silky! I’m sorry but I know there’s a lot of naturals out there that believe wearing their hair wasn’t a form of subconscious self-hate but here’s some proof. Granted she was attempting to crack a joke by any means necessary but her inner feelings came out. So, regardless of her ignorance it’s up to us to educate ourselves and our children and reverse this damn brainwashing that occurred. It’s over. You can’t tell me the way my hair grows out of my head is unattractive any longer! I don’t believe you and it’s time for you to wake up!

76. Considering the number of black kids with jacked up melted, broken off, relaxed hair….she is not alone!!!!

1. one thing i can say is it’s amazing how many black women feel just the way sheryl does but would never say so in public. i can’t help but inwardly shake my head every time i see a little black girl with extensions galore or short, ugly broken off relaxed hair. why do we think that ish is cute? it’s because many, if not most of us, believe exactly as sheryl obviously does- that our hair is worthless, ugly, shameful.
in the town where i live it’s RARE to see a little black girl with natural hair, much less long, healthy hair. if you have healthy black hair around here people assume you have good hair, when they ignorantly fail to realize that your hair looks good because it is well maintained.
and also because the good Lord gave it to you.
i can’t wait for this hateful mindset to cease, but there will always be sheryls in the world, unfortunately, for at least as long as the straight hair standard reigns supreme.

77. Woah, woah, gapch, if that’s your real name. Sharon didn’t instigate it by suggesting that saving black children’s hair was unusual. She talked about saving hair, period. And I think that is unusual, yes. I don’t know anyone who knows anyone who does it. A lock for some art project, maybe, but EVERY time you cut the hair, pulling out a ziploc bag … that’s unusual. That’s the question Sharon was asking, what unusual things do you save from your children.

To give her the benefit of the doubt, Sheryl also thought saving bag after bag of your child’s hair is an oddball thing to do, and she made a joke about “who would want a bag of afro hair,” immediately imagining someone going to a beauty salon looking for extensions. She invented a fictional incident, the idea that Heidi would be selling her children’s hair, for, you know, comedy. It is easy too easy to deliberately take anything out of context and pretend to be offended by it.

1. sharon specifically said afro hair. please rewatch the video clip above or another version on the web. please reread all of my posts in this thread b/c it seems you don’t see where i stand….

1. …@gapch…she said, “but that’s silky hair”…. so afro hair is “nasty” not worthy to be stored away only straight silky hair?! Funny thing about words, once they are out there, it is hard to take back and explain…still her comment is her own…it is not in stone. She can laugh it up and poke fun at the afro hair but I KNOW OUR HAIR IS BEAUTIFUL! #savemybeautifulhair

78. people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. how can you ask for acceptance and respect when you don’t give it? how can you want people to hold the black race in high regards when you don’t? is one type of insult better than another? is sheryl the only one who needs to do and be better?

think about what you all have said

* Sheryl’s silly coon ass. She made her career off being a buffoon and she will likely continue to be one.
* Sheryl can go burn in hell together, self-hating pieces of shit.
* chinned googly eyed retard? Looking like a man in drag she needs to have several seats._ _ __ Her personality is as fake as her wigs.
* W/ a face like that, no wonder she is disgusted with herself.
* People like her are ridiculous
* Yeah she has dark skin but those googly eyes sticking out just makes her look scsry,it doesn’t do her justice as her jaw, chin maker look like she’s in drag. She looks like a dude, masculine shoulders! She needs to see some real natural beauties with actual pretty feminine features. There is nothing attractive about this dog.
* she comes off as a poor man’s Wendy Williams
* the fat black dark girls who have self hate
* looks so silly with that straight silky weave/wig on her head
* Too bad she’s almost bald and her permed hair is damaged under that wig
* Noxeema Jackson need to take off that wig and tell everybody she Wesley Snipes on, yet another, black bashing campaign
* your buck ass teeth is nasty
* Underwood(Underdog)looks very un-natural with that straight hair on her head! She needs a OVERHAUL including her hair
* i’ve always found her to be low rent and gross. sooooo….
* that fat pig
* Disgusting PIG
* a Drag queen
* A Black woman with a pile of nasty looking weave piled on top of her head
* her gums are nasty
* you look like a mud-duck
* NO AMOUNT OF SURGERY can make her beautiful
* This is a woman who obviously could never lover her natural beauty…cause she doesn’t have any.
* don’t listen to D-list celebs. I mean look at her weave, can’t even afford to get a closure.
* I have heard her talk about the fact that she has very thin hair and the fact that she is hideous without her “wigs” and make up.. and in my opinion, “with it too”
* How would she feel if someone came on the show and talked about short teeth and long gums???
* If Westley Snipes and Aresenio Hall had a baby together…..it would look just like her.
* talking hair!!!should we talk albout teeth and gums instead?
* this wig wearing Mr. Ed
* Sheryl Underwood is a perfect example of the modern day mammy/Aunt Jemima archetype.
* such a ugly woman. Cheryl Underwood is ugly, inside and out
* house negro
* She is a clown

Above is a collective list of the comments and insults that you all have thrown and Sheryl throughout this post…. disgusting????

79. Most comedians are in the business of making people laugh, but what she said wasn’t the least bit funny! She said the wrong thing at the wrong time. Most women relaxed or natural struggle body issues, hair issues, family and friend issues, and hair issues. Just because she said it doesn’t mean it is 100% true. Some people make fun of what they are afraid of and what they don’t understand. Being natural is a mindset and there isn’t anything nasty, ugly, or crazy about it. #lookwhoislaughingnow
*crickets*

1. Sheryl really spoke out of pure ignorance. If she had my natural hair she would be so proud of not only her hair ,everything else black stands for.I love ,love my hair.
White people always want to touch it and then the comment is it is so soft.lol

80. Good Question, is coarse afro hair in its natural state ever requested or sold at beauty salons? If not, maybe it is not desirable by women who wear fake hair. Perhaps this is what Ms. Underwood was trying to say in her comedic way – she is a comedian.

81. Quite I honestly, I feel she should be replaced. She is a clown abd provides comic relief. But this time, she pushed the envelope too far.

82. watching the full clip elsewhere on the web sheryl didnt ever say “nappy nasty hair” as quoted above

she said in regards to saving hair “thats just seems nasty” …. after saying why save afro hair in a plastic bag (hair is purchased in bags) when no one goes to the beauty supply to request “curly, nappy, beaded hair” – is she lying?

in the full clip of 2.5 minutes you can see the other ladies full reactions….

sharon osborned instigated the whole thing.

why is no one mad that sharon said “what other unusual things do you save” she in essence said saving afro hair is a weird thing to save…

no one is mad at marie osborne dying laughing out here seat…. laughing so hard she almost feel…..

and aisha was laughing and sara was simply saying saving hair in general is not weird. she wasnt being pro black or pro afro hair

why not be mad at the beauty supply store for not selling type 4 (4c) hair or for women for not going to request it…..

sheryl made a bad joke but lets not crucify her and lets not call her every name in the book. the insults thrown at her throughout this thread are horrible…

1. @gapch, Firstly, it seems like you’re attempting to deflect and minimize the ignorant, self-deprecating remarks Sheryl Underwood made by putting the focus on the other hosts’ comments and reactions. They only reacted in this manner because of the complete licentiousness of this woman’s remarks. It’s apparent she’s suffering from opportunism and identity crisis when she says such things on national television while wearing a wig that is representative of another culture. I think this was an inadvertent Freudian slip, weakly disguised as humor, that clearly illustrates Ms. Underwood’s frustration and disillusionment with her own being.

1. It comes down to this: People in the media who are fortunate enough to have a national platform from which to espouse their views are tasked with the burden of assuming moral and ethical responsibility, as opposed to just opening up your mouth and saying any dang thang…

1. sheryl may have been wrong but she shouldnt be crucified. she couldve chosen her words better but she doesnt deserve the insults and hate. positive reinforcement works just as well if not better than negative reinforcement in times of punishment. plus its a ton of the pot calling the kettle black… i go back to the solange article or articles about blue ivy or others with afros or undefined afro texture hair but the same ones have a problem with Sheryl but put on an episode of Martin calling Pam beady bead and the same commentators are rolling on the floor laughing. its okay to hold sheryl accountable but turn that mirror around at the same time…. not you per se but its just a bunch of hypocrisy and delusion on this forum

1. read the compiled list of insults that were thrown at Sheryl and let me know if you still think the commentators are justified. fight hate with love not more hate…

1. @gapch, I am not attacking you. And yes, I’m well aware of the hypocrisy. Which is why personally, I don’t watch “Martin” or any other show of that ilk. I don’t walk around with a grim frown on my face and I’m not a stereotypical “angry black man.” I like good humor, not cheap humor that’s disguised to belittle and hurt. The environment I grew up in would hurt you for a slight such as this. It’s a slippery slope though, when we start to give poetic license and acceptance to derogatory and inflammatory remarks in the name of “comedy.”

1. i havent taken anything as an attack so no worries there. i welcome dialogue and debate and understand the thin line or slippery slope concept. but like i said Sheryl may not be right but quite a few on this blog are far from right either….

2. After re-watching the clip we realize that Sheryl did not refer to the hair itself as “nasty” and made the correction in the article above.

Unfortunately, the correction does little to lessen the distastefulness of her derogatory comments.

1. True, I watched it and didn’t see where she said afro hair was nasty per say….but saving it was….still….it is a bitter pill to swallow….our hair is beautiful as is!

3. Actually, you’re misinformed. There are $500 natural hair textured (4A like my hair) lace fronts and they sell very well. It’s not a salon request, but it’s a request. Not every black woman who wants long hair wants it straight. And Ms. Underwood’s comment was ignorant, no matter how you try to soften it.

1. far from misinformed. im aware of natural hair weaves and wigs as i own several but its not like available at sallys. at the same time im aware how sheryl could say that no on in running to the beauty stores requesting them. shes not lying on that point. ladies on this site went so hard on solange and many dont value afros and many want hair that hangs low instead of out….

all im saying and have said is that sheryl shouldnt be crucified. shes not the only ignorant one. have you read the responses throughout this thread?

2. I was going to reply that there an ever increasing number of lines that carry Afro-textured hair.

4. gapch – I have watched your posts on this story and many others and you are one of the most contrary/non-supportive posters I have ever encountered, gee whiz. Are you even black? Do you have natural hair? Are you a troll? Do you log onto these stories just to say things to upset others? And I see I am not alone as usually your posts are thumbed down in the double digits. Look, this is a free forum and you can say whatever you’d like, but just know that the general consensus is that your comments aren’t appreciated nor is your perspective really respected because they are riddled with anti-black sentiment and always try to discount the issues in the natural black hair community. Not that you will necessarily care and like I mentioned you are free to post whatever, but I just thought I’d point out that your posts are really disappointing to say the least. :/

1. i beg to differ…. you wrong on most points… but we can all agree to disagree…. you dont regulate anything BGLH does….

1. @ gapch – truthfully not trying to be a bully and my intent wasn’t to offend so I have no problem apologizing for that. But my points still stand, no matter what someone says – someone will post a genuine concern, frustration, etc. and you always seem to come with something, adding insult to injury or something just totally UNSUPPORTIVE. We as black women often go through SO MUCH just being us. And oh my goodness, the attacks on Black women on Yahoo! comments, CNN etc. are hurtful and painful like nothing I’ve ever seen. And then we have an awesome forum here on BGLH, a place for us to come together, vent and be ourselves and encourage one another and then comes your typical totally NON-SUPPORTIVE comments, really, REALLY bothersome. Just wanted to give some insight on why you constantly receive negative feedback on your posts. But perhaps you don’t mind and will post what you want, that’s cool – just thought you’d like to know. Blessings.

5. gapch – Sharon did not instigate the issue of black hair. Some people in general find that motherly tradition somewhat odd. Sheryl decided to take it to the subject of it being black hair. At 00:27-00:32 … Sherly ” I’m sorry, but why would you save Afro hair?”…No one else made an issue of the hair being black hair. Sheryl specifically made a point to say that, of all hair, why would you save Afro hair.

When Sara was saying she gets it and starts to explain that she does the same, Sheryl feels it is necessary to interrupt her to further demean black hair…00:53-00:59 … Sheryl: “Which is probably some beautiful, long, silky stuff. That’s not what an afro hair is.” So what, exactly? Your child’s first haircut isn’t worth saving if they’re black? She opened her mouth without thinking or she really has issues about herself and other black people. I don’t think there is a need to name call etc. either, but she did demean black hair and having made the poor choice to do so, must deal with the backlash. As black woman with the public platform she has, what she did was utterly stupid.

1. does the backlash need to include all of the hateful comments about her physical traits that further perpetuates other areas of black self hate and colorism? does the backlash need to include calls for boycotts? never said she was right but dont believe she needs to be crucified for making what she herself has called a joke

6. gapch: I hear yeah, and I agree with your overall thoughts. I think a lot of people on this thread are hypocrites. As a group we are the ones making the hair stores rake in the money $$$. As for Aisha she laughed like every one else. Aisha was probably caught off guard because she had no idea what Sheryl was going to say. As for “Sharon Osborn instigated the whole thing.” Duuuuh the show is called ‘The Talk’….thus they talk about different topics. Talking about different topics on ‘The Talk’ ‘is a no-brainer. Some topics people will like, and some we won’t like. There’s always the option of turning the channel

83. This is very sad. She’s saying to million of viewers that African American afro hair is so bad and it isn’t worth saving. That’s a big slap in the face about our natural hair. The mother of the biracial children obviously doesn’t have any issues with it so why does Sheryl Underwood have issues?

Sheryl Underwood, I’d rather wear my own hear than to be sitting on national TV wearing someone else’s hair. Oh, I forgot that is your hair because you paid for it. I have no words to say on this topic is just so sad.

My last thought is that her hair might me nappy and nasty, but as for the many others, that is so far from the truth.

I’m out!

84. Looking like a FOOL with that silly wig on and MY hair is nasty??? Chick paleez! I agree with the person above and I’d go further to say, she doesn’t deserve that platform.

85. I don’t even know how to react to this in fact… I don’t know if I have to be shocked for having this kind of comment in 2013 or if I have to be sorry for her for having this black inferiority complex…

86. There was a better quality video on Youtube. Anyhoo, Sheryl acts as if all black people have a weave. She is so lost. Why would you save Afro hair, you ask Sheryl? Because it’s her children’s natural hair. Stop being so damned ignorant in front of the world. DAMN!!

87. Not surprised by Sheryl, I never liked her anyway, but to have the platform she has and use it in this manor is disappointing.

1. Her attitude towards black people and herself is probably why she has the platform that she has!

88. I am an AA woman who wears her natural coils, straightens her hair with heat, wears braids and yes even weaves. I love my hair because of its versatility. I don’t feel like I have any more self esteem when I wear natural hair styles and less when I wear weaves or straightened hair. I just have different hair style, it is not a political statement , a reflection on my psychological state or a demonstration of my socio political beliefs. It’s just hair, get a grip people. As far as Sheryl is concerned, she is a self proclaimed Republican house negro. I could not care less about what she thinks about my hair.

89. I would like to see the power brokers of media give intelligent, culturally and ethnically informed and competent women of the African Diaspora a proper platform from which we can articulate, engage, challenge and empower ourselves without the distractions of buffoonery, misogyny or self-hatred in the form of a joke…or a music video…or sensationalized news. – signed a nappy, kinky, healthy, loving woman of the African Diaspora who is clear enough to know that one woman does not and can not speak for us all!

90. She really said that afro hair is nasty? I’ve heard many negative opinions about natural hair, but never “nasty.” SMH. It’s not even what she said, ok it is, but it’s really about the attitude/mindset portrayed by it, which I see as problematic when shown to the world because I can just see it being used to make the “see? black women HATE their hair and they wish they had somebody else’s” card stronger for people who like to generalize about black women (and others). True, some do hate their hair, but with all these natural beauties I see, somebody needs to reeducate her about what “nasty” actually means. But it’s not as though she’s the only one who publicly disses afro hair. I mean when some of us refuse to ever wear any weave that is remotely close to our hair texture, beam with proudness to have “white girl hair” (oh yes, I’ve seen it), relax the life out of it (and I’m really meaning as in “rocking” that burnt dry look), and look at kinky hair in disgust, and publicly [try to] embarrass and disrespect someone for wearing her/his God-given hair, in my opinion, the same damage is done, if not worse because it’s on that “real/every day” level. But presenting this attitude on national tv definitely is damaging (but in all honestly other races have picked up on this long ago before Sheryl, but she didn’t help.) Love yourself and let go of the foolishness.

91. I’m not at all surprised by the ugly words that spew from the ugly mouth of such a ugly woman. Cheryl Underwood is ugly, inside and out so she wears ugly wigs to try to cover up her own hate but there’s not enough anything in this world that would cover up her problem.

92. She ran out of jokes! I pity her. She’s was embarrassing herself, thinking that she was speaking for all black people (inkl.Heidi kids hair). This is the consequence for wearing synthetics wigs for too long, thinking its her natural hair. Poor thing. What she needs to do is to get rid of her wig for a change and start wearing her hair natural. Her head needs fresh air for new growths, moisture for her to start thinking before trying to be funny. I bet the women around her weren’t laughing at her jokes, they’re probably laughing at how stupid she looks and sounded with their silky hair on her head.

93. What a shame. I understand that sheryl does NOT represent all black ppl and the weight of the burden is unfair BUT in a society where there is limited exposure of AA culture and TRUTH, any disparaging remarks can have a powerful impact. I cringe to think of the white ppl watching that episode who heard her comments, saw her laughter, saw Aisha not react negatively and think we ARE something to be laughed at. WHO& WHAT makes us unique is ugly and undesirable? She didnt end the “joke” by saying she was just being silly or whatever. They think she meant it! Am i being touchy as some on here will claim? I dont think so bc yes she is a comedian but its the arena in which she chose to make those remarks that upsetting. Nat’l TV?If she had been at a predominately black comedy club…WE get the joke and wont take it so personally bc theres some truth in SOME blk folks feeling that way abt their hair.YES I KNOW, hypocrite! I know bc I dont find it ok to do certain jokes in the presence of whites bc they take it out of context. For them it isnt necessarily a joke, its A TRUTH we are making fun of. Sheryl doesnt seem to feel she has an obligation to UPLIFT our ppl in her public forum, she is bound by HER comedic code of ethics thats says GET A LAUGH!! EVEN if its at your own ppls expense! Yes, our most famous blk comedians made fun of us, hair, lips, behavior, etc. but it just seems so damaging on nat’l tv to be seen EXPLAINING why our hair is so “nasty”. What an awful word! “nasty?” really sheryl?? To me, i feel the true talent of a comedian is to know when a joke is appropriate.Who is your audience? Is it offensive beyond the scope of “just comedy”?? She needs to be aware. She clearly doesnt wear her own hair, doesnt see how those remarkds could be hurtful. And yes, keeping it 100% …in front of all those white ppl?And with her comments is it any wonder our hair is such an issue in some workplaces? why its “unprofefssional”. why they think we should all be slapping in the perms and rockin as she put it “silky & straight” weaves? When they hear US saying its nasty and undesirable, why would white ppl feel they should “accept” it? we clearly dont! And i say WE bc TRUST, white ppl sitting in the audience and watching tv with prejudices and race issues all felt VALIDATED bc she was saying she doesnt value our hair, that its should be thrown away. its garbage we should hide & discard. What does that say abt what shes got going on under that horse hair? What does she see when she looks in the mirror? I suspect everything that is “wrong” with her.*smh
But as of right now, im done with her.Its a shame bc i like The View. shes usually very funny in contrast to the other hosts straight lace personalities but clearly shes got no common sense. I knew she pushed the envelope, made comments that were sketchy…i was ok with it. Shes a comedian, its her job. And believe it or not, I noticed how she plays the race card in a lot of her jokes. Why do you have to play the race card?why cant you just BE FUNNY without all the colorful sterotypes? They are expecting it and she gives it to them every time! Like “well you know black folks dont..blah, blah”.
I even cringe a little when asian comedian Margaret Cho does stand up and she goes HARD on asian sterotypes in a room full of white ppl. And they are all cracking up..and im thinking “well they already think its true so they find this hilarious!” how disturbing!I feel the same abt blk comedians. I love our comedic greats like cedric, seteve harvy, the late bernie mac and they played the race card all the time. You go with what you know but they were funny across all races and ethnicities. Sheryl is one dimensional and now with her latest “joke”..im kinda over her.she doesnt get it.shes not the only short sighted black person who’s said harsh things abt blk ppl that had a perceived backlash.it wont be the last time. Ppl like Sherly think they are only responsible for themselves and they wont shoulder any burden that doesnt benefit them. She didnt ask to be a spokesperson for black ppl, black culture & the public black image & frankly, shes not fit to be one if such a thing even existed!

94. Now we all know Sheryl Underwood is extremely IGNORANT. This is the same woman who went to talking about performing fellatio on a friend’s man to becoming president of Zeta Phi Beta. That in itself is laughable.

95. Clearly she have self love issues.I wear my hair naturally and i get nothing but complements. What I refuse to wear is a weave..just like the one she is wearing.Geeez…what some people are willing to say and do to keep a job.

96. I’m more appalled that the comment was made relative to Heidi’s statement about managing her own children’s hair. I agree, in general Sheryl’s remarks were distasteful, and disparaging to the population that identifies with textured hair, but also, it seemed to be an underhanded dig at Heidi’s kids. IMO.

97. Not surprising. It’s the ingrained self-hate that many people of color have. No different from people that say “you are pretty for a dark-skinned girl”. Or those that want to have kids with someone light so their children are fair with “good hair”. Happens with blacks, latinos, Indians, Asians, etc.

98. Why even waste time giving ignorant AA women like her a platform and cause us lovely naturals to get all worked up over her stupidity. I’m sure if she wears weavea and wigs all year long and regards her hair as nasty and nappy is there any doubt she probably doesn’t take care of it? Anyone’s hair when let to itself can get nappy and nasty.

99. This is clearly a case of ‘consider the source’… Sheryl Underwood is a perfect example of the modern day mammy/Aunt Jemima archetype. Unfortunately just another black person going down the Sambo route for a momentary laugh.

1. Spot on Dwayne – people do not just end up on TV from luck – especially dark skinned black people. She has been allowed this platform for a reason and she is keeping her end of the deal

100. Well, instead of attacking this wig wearing Mr. Ed, maybe one need take a closer look at the image MOST black women exude to the world. MOST black women wouldn’t be caught dead wearing their natural, nappy, beady hair in public. MOST black women are still faithfully covering their true nature with some of that good ol’ long silky nice stuff. Not a single weave wearing black woman is looking to buy a bag of good ol’ fashion kinks. Yeah, it’s easy to deride the comedienne for publicly mouthing a truth MOST black women embrace. Maybe it’s just easier to hold a public persona accountable instead of your mama or grandmother or the ladies at church or the young girl ringing up your groceries or half the brown-skinned wretched souls walking down the street slinging that Remy good stuff across their shoulders.

Personally, after watching the video, I thought Mr. Ed was kind of funny. Of course her comments in no way reflect the beauty of my natural hair. What an immense freedom it is to be able to live without personalizing every public sentiment. I am truly blessed.

1. Generalize much? Out of the millions of black women in this country you’ve assessed the self image of MOST Black women? Did you take some sort of census? Your generalization is baseless and as ignorant as Underwood’s.

1. My 17 year old cousin came to visit. He was considering growing his hair out and as we walked through my city (one of the largest in the US), he kept pointing out all of the natural men and women. I figured that I just noticed naturals more because I’m a natural newbie, but he was right. I don’t think we can make a blanket statement about ALL black women using weaves and chemicals anymore. I’d say that most of my friends from college and seemingly everyone in my building at work are natural. So, let’s stop the generalization about how we feel about natural hair. Furthermore, just because someone uses chemicals or weave doesn’t mean they think that natural hair is disgusting.

Sheryl is from a generation that will die out soon enough, thankfully.

2. YOU ARE COMPLETELY WRONG!
Everything you said is beyond hurtful. Being a Black Women, I wear my natural nappy beautiful Black hair proudly! I love my hair. It’s a part of me. I have never ever ever had a weave. I get compliments all the time on my hair, as I do the same for the COUNTLESS number of other Black women also wearing their hair naturally. Though there are girls that do wear weave, generalizing that to include all Black women is a logical fallacy.

You are tasteless and have no class. People like you make young Black girls ashamed to wear their hair naturally. Macklemore said it best ‘we become so numb to what we’re saying’ you’re attempting to normalize self hatred among Black women and it’s wrong.

I’m Black, I’m proud, and I’ll wear my hair any fucking way I want to.

1. you couldve just as easily gotten your point across without the last two paragraphs. sending insults back always lessens the values of an argument.

1. oh, hi so i take it you’re the self-appointed comments police. let people say what they want. that’s why it’s an open forum. if bglh doesn’t like what’s said they can just as easily erase the comment. they don’t need you to guilt trip everyone into “playing nice”.it’s a waste of your time, considering who it is you’d be defending. that hag would just as much make a cruel joke out of you as she would a victim of holocaust, and if you’re black, then that means she already has. defend her if you want, but your words are lost in this present light.

101. She really shouldn’t be teaching others to look at our children with disgust. I guess that’s why she has a weave…no self love. I say boycott her!!!! FYI: If Westley Snipes and Aresenio Hall had a baby together…..it would look just like her.

1. and I know that many sistas wear weaves for fashion or just because they can…but I this woman has no self love given what she has said. She disgusts me

2. Boycotting would just be another example of a Black Man/ Women receiving a punishment that doesnt fit the crime

3. How in the blue blazes is a 30 sec snippet a teaching lessson?????

And please get your spelling together (WESLEY and ARSENIO) before leading the swine over the boycotting ledge!

102. I seriously don’t even know what to say to this….. I am truly at a loss for words. And for those saying it’s just a joke – you are naive and delusional at best. You can’t express a harsh, cruel, painful “opinion” about an entire race of people and think it’s just a joke. It would be the same as saying something about Asian eyes or being short & Mexican….talking and laughing about a characteristic that is the norm for an ENTIRE group of people, and doing it with such disgust, is wrong and a slap in the face to God, insulting His creation. I will NEVER support her in anything she does. How embarrassing.

1. It’s really pathetic that sheryl has to turn everything in a joke. Its clear that she doesn’t have anything that she won’t joke about. I have heard her talk about the fact that she has very thin hair and the fact that she is hideous without her “wigs” and make up.. and in my opinion, “with it too” it’s pitiful that she thinks straight, long silky hair makes you beautiful and kinky hair makes you unattractive. “Why would any mother want to save afro hair???” its what some mothers do. It’s called keep sakes. Why is she talking like she grew straight silky hair out of her receeding hairline scalp???. She takes her hair off!!! How would she feel if someone came on the show and talked about short teeth and long gums??? The same way that she can’t change her apperance without extensive surgery is the same way that a culture of people can’t change how their hair grows into the scalp!!! CONSIDER YOUR FLAWS SHERYL.

1. overcome hate with love. no need for all of the insults. point wouldve been clear without them.

103. I really don’t care if that’s the way she feels about afro textured hair. She has the right to her opinion. But it’s the fact that you are on a panel on live tv basically saying afro hair is nappy and nasty and not worth saving, but silky straight hair is. She pretty much reinforced the thinking that afro hair is inferior and dirty, and all other people are going to see is that if she as a black person feels that way, then it MUST be true. Some opinions should not be expressed.

104. I agree with the “It is very jarring to hear natural hair disparaged so publicly and with such disgust.” comment.

105. I agree with the “It is very jarring to hear natural hair disparaged so publicly and with such disgust.” comment.

106. Cheryl’s comments are disappointing to say the least. Some comedians will say ANYTHING for a laugh! Most of Cheryl’s (and Aisha’s) wigs/weaves, in my opinion look VERY UNNATURAL. Nothing against women who choose to wear wigs or weaves (I’m a cosmetologist); but it should look like it could be your natural hair. Again, just my opinion…

For the record, over 40 years ago in the late ’60’s, my mother cut my lone braid in the top of my head so that I could wear an afro because the nape of my hair was sooooo much shorter. She SAVED the ponytail. It was many, many years later that we threw it away!

107. This is nothing new. It never will go away. You think the “Black is Beautiful” revolution from the 70s wiped out all the self hating Blacks and they put down the relaxer and pressing combs? Or, what about the years of the conk — from the 20s to the 60s… you think ALL Blacks refrained from the conk to embrace their natural hair?
My military supervisor is a very light skinned black woman and she relaxer her hair weekly! Yes, you read correctly — weekly. Her hair is super short and if you were to classify it – it is probably a 3B-3C.. and she is very critical with coarse black hair… she is in her 60s. And she is not alone… this type of thinking will never go away — period.

108. Who?! I’m sorry I don’t listen to D-list celebs. I mean look at her weave, can’t even afford to get a closure. Sorry not meaning to be rude but she’s super rude and shows herself hate VERY STRONG.

109. It was a joke. You know as in LOL, lighten up. Sheryl Underwood is hilarious, I luv her.

110. It was a joke. You know as in LOL, lighten up. Sheryl Underwood is hilarious, I luv her.

111. It’s irritating, it’s actually irritating. But that’s it, an irritant. Despite the ‘comedy’ element, she clearly believes these statements, and I say we pity her, and just like every other irritant, we move on. The afro hair community has come forward leaps and bounds, and hopefully we’re at the point where comments like this aren’t taken to heart

That’s Kate

1. AMEN my sista….send paryers her way that she may learn to love all of herself from the roots on her head to the tips of her toes…unfortunately, many ppl think like her…pray for them all. Black hair in all of its elements is beautiful and a gift from God and should be treated as such.

112. Unless you have been natural your entire life, at one point or another..before you woke up, you thought just like she does. Only she comes out and says it loud. What did we do? Relax, weave, wig, and straighten our hair until it died. Then we learned that whichever way we choose to wear our hair….health is what is the most important thing. This lady will wake up one day, give her time.

1. I was was relaxed most of my life. I never thought like that. Though I knew there were people who did. Only reason I had a perm for so long was because thats all I knew growing up. I tried to go natural in my teens (I loved the Pam Grier fro), but I didn’t know how to take care of my hair so my mom slapped another relaxer in it. I love my natural hair. My hair used to be limp now it’s full.
Not everybody who has had perms was a self-hater. So please do not liken every black women whose had a perm to this woman. Not every womans experience is the same as every other womans.

1. I agree. Not everyone had that mentality. I loved hair as long as it was well maintained and healthy. I let peer pressure lure me into relaxing my hair. Prior to that I had a beautiful, puffy, healthy fro

2. I never saw my natural hair until I transitioned. I didn’t know what it looked like when i was a child. My mother didn’t use kiddie perms in my hair because she saw the results of the girls in my family who had those box relaxers put in their hair. Dry, damaged, and broken off. She would put my hair in these braided styles that I hated. when it was out after we had washed it, she would look and speak of it in utter contempt. It was not out of love or concern for me but out of her own twisted contempt.

I never had these negative feelings and self-hate that my mother tried to bestow unto me about my hair. My ignorant, brainwashed mother certainly did but not me. She would say “if I only I had curls I could wear my hair out”. If only it were silky ringlets or straight. She would talk about how bad it was. If it wasn’t Shirly Temple ringlets or silky straight like Becky and Laura it wasn’t what hair is supposed to look like and it needed to be hidden.

I hated getting my hair braided and straightened as a child and as a teenager. My mother always had negative comments about my natural hair and acted like she was in such strife with my hair when she would do it. I strongly resent her for that and do not talk to her to this day. The hair thing was not the only issue but one of the main ones. Eventually she took me to the salon to get it relaxed, something I had a very bad feeling about it but she still forced me to do it anyway. The first thing I did when I left for college is grow that relaxer out and my mother has never heard from me sense.

Sheryl Underwood needed to keep her big mouth shut or put a sock in her pie hole if she couldn’t refrain from espousing her stupidity. Why is it that black people feel compelled to make these sorts of comments? Is it insecurity? Ignorance? Brainwashing? I truley do not understand black womens thought process on this matter.

1. Thanks for sharing your story and instead of a thumbs down, I wish someone would have simply responded to you about the relationship between you and your mother. First let me just say that no one is perfect. We all make mistakes as parents. She, just like many of us has simply been taught to feel the way she does about our hair texture. Parents learn from their children everyday and being in your mother’s life with your beautiful natural hair could have definitely influenced her. Never let anything as simple as this keep you from your mother. Times are changing and so are many perceptions of kinky hair.

113. That´s embarrassing! I mean how can she sit there and diss our hair like that and laugh about it like if it was funny-some blacks simply don´t understand -.-

114. That´s embarrassing! I mean how can she sit there and diss our hair like that and laugh about it like if it with funny-some blacks simply do not understand -.-

1. oh my goodness. are we going to boycott reruns from the Martin show as well or his comedic routines. or every other comedian that has ever mentioned black hair in a negative light? whether wrong or right, dont act like cheryl underwood is the first comedian or famous person to say bad things about black hair…

1. Why did I even watch the video? What a waste of time. I don’t watch these types of shows for a reason. >_<

115. We ARE talking Sheryl Underwood, though ppl. Why are you surprised enough to even bother dissecting the comments? Just go back if you’re unfamiliar with her work and listen to her opinions/jokes: they are all VERY right wing. She her politics remind me a lot of the character played by Samuel L. Jackson in Tarantino’s “Django Unchained”. LOL…. but seriously!

1. Is this a forum for hair or a forum for politics? So, natural sistas with conservative views need not apply?

1. Looking at your truckload of thumbs down the anwer is obviously not. Everyone knows if you are black than you do not have the right to affiliate with any party or philosophy not associated with liberalism. After all, look at how well left wing politics have served us.

-Median family income of blacks under the biracial messiah has fallen 10.9 % Under Regan it increased 89 %

-Black unemployment increase by 42%

Look at how well 60 years of liberalism has worked out for Detroit.

Sorry for going off topic but shit like this pisses me off. Blacks are the first to scream “We are not a monolith!!! Why can’t THEY get that?” and yet the minute a black person dare not lean left they are an uncle tom self hating negro. GTFO

It’s no wonder our votes are taken for granted election after election after election.

1. I’m sorry but I hold traditional lef-wing views.
Helping the needy, abortion rights, gay rights, anti-death penalty, anti-discrimination, progressive taxing, focus on education and the enviorment, upholding the constitution. I cannot agree with right-wing thinking which often means the opposite of most of these things..

Sad thing that most of the Corporate America went to the right, the enviornment which I work in. That means no natural hair styles, racist hiring and pay. 70+ hour work week, or be considered “lazy”. Watch your entire life go by and die of a heart attack at the age of 45 just to have the execs move your cold, dead body out of the way to bring in the next guy. It’s a sad thing that wanting some free time to spend time with your loved one’s, focus on your health and hobbies, and enjoy life outside of the company is frowned upon. Do you think these people could care less about Jimmy’s game, or Susie’s ballet recital, your health or natural hair? They could bat an eye.

I certainly do not consider the U.S a left-wing country. Our democrates are right-winged on an international level and the right are akin to talliban wannabes. It is obvious that our country is lacking behind more liberal nations (in the American sense of the word).

116. Well, narcissist that I am of course I saved my children’s springy, coily, oh so soft hair from their very first haircut…couldn’t bear the thought of departing with it. My kids laugh at me like I’m some crazed fan of their’s-but their hair is a gift from God and I treasured it as such….still do.

1. My mom saved the hair of her deceased daughter in the early sixties. I remember seeing it in a plastic bag. It was the only thing that was left of my sister.

Years later, I saved the locks of my baby boy when he was born. I dont’ think it is unusual or weird. What I do find weird and ironic is that people thinking it is weird to save hair but think nothing of putting on a lace front wig or extensions in their hair that comes from someone they don’t know at all.

117. this doesnt bother me for the simple fact that Sheryl always refers to herself as “black and ugly” “her nappy hair that her wigs are silky smooth” teehee its a joke, but its clearly an issue she really struggles with and tries to deflect with jokes. I just feel sorry for her because she isnt happy with herself. she needs therapy to learn to love herself

1. While boycotting, dont forget the reruns of Martin show, Jamie Fox Show, tapes of Monique, Sommore, and every other Black movie, tv show or movie which has mentioned beady beds, kitchen, naps, in a negative light…. or have promoted silky straight weaves in positive light…. ijs… Cheryl probably wasnt right in what she said but keep it in context and respond in an appropriate degree…. Boycotting would just be another example of a Black Man/ Women receiving a punishment that doesnt fit the crime

1. That’s not a terrible idea. But we’d also need to work together better to fund an support uplifting replacement programming. Which is not impossible.

118. Well, when you look like a mud-duck, naturual hair would be “nasty” and “nappy” on you. The only way she can fix herself up is to slap a wig on her head and call it a day. NO AMOUNT OF SURGERY can make her beautiful so if she can’t see the beauty in her own face/being, how can she see it in someone else?

119. Don’t get too upset-just consider the source. A Black woman with a pile of nasty looking weave piled on top of her head is not someone who I look to for inspiration or insight anyway. It’s not my preference, but I’ve seen women wear weave looking much better than hers.
‘The View’ isn’t a show that I watch even when home so I’m not going to miss it anyway. And I’d NEVER pay for a ticket to see her or Aisha Tyler for any reason now. I’m sure they wouldn’t want this nappy headed person’s money!

120. Talk about making a big deal outta nothing. The problem with this country is that unless someone or a topic agrees with you 100% you get pissed off and blow it out of proportion. It’s ok to make fun of EVERYTHING from ashy elbows to nappy hair but only on your terms? The article incorrectly dissected what she said and blew a bunch of hype in it! She never ONCE said that just because Gilbert’s kids had silky hair that is was worth saving. She’s a comedienne who makes jokes. Some of ya’ll need to laugh more.

1. You said (cut n paste) “She never ONCE said that just because Gilbert’s kids had silky hair that is was worth saving”.
Ok so i watched the video several times. Heres my little transcript:
Sara: I dont know, maybe I’m weird but I have my son’s 1st haircut and little hair(trails off)
Sheryl: Which is probably beautiful long & silky stuff..: *audience laughter
Sheryl: Thats not what an afro is…*continued audience laughter…
You tell me how we all misunderstood the CONTEXT of those words? It makes sense for Sara to save her sons hair bc its long & silky…but afro hair isnt long & silky, so that automatically makes it illogical to want to save it? I’m supposed to find that insult funny? She just degraded her entire lineage and AA in general to ExPLAIN to Sara that HER son’s hair was worth saving but not Heidi’s? Really? If I were Heidi, I might give Ms. Sheryl a call!
So in your mind, the issue is that I just need to laugh more? I have a sense of humor. I love laughter. I laugh at the most inappropriate things EVEN knowing when its tacky, wrong,…I own my flaws. But i can also admit when something is over the line. when something is beyond the scope of “just comedy”. Can you? Its like saying Blk educators who focus on the effects of slavery even in this day and age are labeled as being overdramatic & false in suggesting cause & effects while the Holcaust is so important to US History & should never be fogotten or joked about. You call a jewish director a Nazi…lose a job! Make a disparaging remark about blacks? “it was just a joke..why are we so sensitive”! When you are black & embrace your ENTIRE heritage, those comments arent funny. And that doesn make you UPTIGHT.It makes the person who said it UNENLIGHTENED & IGNORANT.

121. Frequently, comedians are those who have a degree of insight into the human condition, and whether insultingly or positively, hold them up to society to be viewed while they are also, hopefully, laughed at.
She is one of the exceptions.
It’s one thing to be self-deprecating, it is another to be self-hating, and to hold yourself and others like you up for ridicule without due cause. Is HER hair that silky and straight? Well, I mean the hair that she doesn’t have a receipt for, that isn’t sewn or glued into the hair that her creator saw fit to make the norm for so many of the population?
The ones who are hurling insults at her are little better, doing so out of hurt and anger. They MIGHT be slightly justified, but when we cannot relax in our natural states without holding up another ethnic group as the epitome of anything whether good or bad, it shows a true lack of intelligence.

122. She seems to have a personal disdain for kinky hair. That’s pretty sad. The situation looked very uncomfortable because you can tell the other ladies weren’t really agreeing with her.
You should see the clip where she took her wig off. You’ll see why she hates natural hair so much. I feel sorry for her smh.

123. She seems to have a personal disdain for kinky hair. That’s pretty sad. The situation looked very uncomfortable because you can tell the other ladies weren’t really agreeing with her.
You should see the clip where she took her wig off. You’ll see why she hates natural hair so much.

124. I don’t think CBS Choose wisely . She’s from that old I hate what’s mine and love what’s yours camp. Go sit down, if you can’t keep up with progressive society.

125. this is just disgusting. It is deplorable that a dark skinned woman who wears wigs and weaves that does not represent her or her heritage is quick to praise silky hair and bash hair of mixed race people or kinky hair in general. I love wigs and weaves and understand that some people prefer straight hair; simply because you have a preference does not make it okay to degrade what you don’t have a preference for. The problem with these type of people is, when there is a topic on light/ dark skin they are quick to say “It doesn’t matter. At the end we are all people and should love the way God made us”. This statement is indeed true but when it comes out of the mouths of hypocrites you can’t help but to get annoyed. This woman’s hair never looks like her own. You can always tell it’s a wig and a bad one at that. I am so embarrassed that out of all of the women who was up there she was the only one (a dark skinned, wig wearing women)who was QUICK to say something. Dark skinned women already have a rep simply because of the shade of their black and now here comes stupid Sheryl Underwood “making it better”. I can take jokes, I love to laugh, and have a great sense of humor. When there are schools in Ohio banning children from wearing afro puffs, women with natural hair being told what to do with it in the work place, and other black women bashing something that naturally grows out of your scalp….JESUS, the last thing we need is for a Drag queen to sit on stage adding fuel to the fire in front of millions of people. *smh* I want to say so much more but I don’t want to waste anymore energy because of the ignorance. I’m guessing we will be getting an apology really soon. This is what these celebrities do. Say something ignorant and offensive and then say “I’m sorry =( It was a stupid joke” in the end

126. SO, I know everyone is mad at sheryl for her comments. I don’t care for her comments at all…i just voiced my opinion on the issue a few minutes ago. But here’s what’s interesting to me:

I went over to twitter after i posted my comment to see what #blacktwitter has to say about all this, and to my dismay i saw the most hateful words thrown at sheryl-BUT not about her recent comments about afro hair. People were calling her a “black ass ape” telling her to serve them monkey bread, all because of some things she RETWEETED about lil kim(again, nothing she originally said-we’re talking about retweets). It was a gross display-trust me.

What’s my point?

My point is we have a sister who is ignorant who is making natural women the butt of a joke. She’s having people laugh at us and our image on national television and at the same time, we are in a world where people can just go to twitter and call you an ape, a monkey a nigger and any other kind of craziness. It’s no wonder. It’s no wonder we’re not respected, we show each other disrespect on such a regular basis. It’s accepted. When will this be unacceptable?

Amen?

1. Its one thing to disagree or attack what she said but many of the comments are taking it to another level by attacking her character, appearance etc. We demonstrate the same ignorance we are being to critical about

1. Valid point – HOWEVER, people of all races are known to post mean, hurtful things to all celebrities on twitter and when a celebrity signs up for a twitter account it goes along with the territory,. That does NOT give you the right to go on national TV and diss an entire race of people. I hate bullying on twitter, online, etc. But that doesn’t excuse awful comments like hers.

127. It was a cheap joke. Made to receive a quick laugh, because obviously the woman was running out of a good topic.

Did she forget that under that “shiny and silky” weave, was her own “nasty and nappy,” hair?

Apparently so, because she reeks of self-hate.

128. What is nasty is that fat pig who made such reprehensible comments, and the fact that the comment makes any reference towards children makes it completly innapropriate. Disgusting PIG. Boils my blood.

1. darkness can not drive out darkness only light can do that. conquer hate and ignorance with love….

129. She may not like “AFRO” hair, but white people are fascinated by it. Isn’t that the way? I was taught to see my hair positively, and I would always feel pride when white people asked, “how did you do that?” knowing they could not accomplish the same style (supporting my belief they are fascinated with black hair). But I think others here hit the nail on the head that she should be pitied.

1. not all white people like natural hair. there are plenty of white people who dont care for natural or afro textured hair. and their opinion should not be used as a validation benchmark.

1. More importantly, who gives a shit what white people like or dislike as it pertains to Black folk?

2. I guess it depends on how you interpret “fascinated”. I don’t necessarily believe it equals “like”, more interest. Which I consider more positive than not.

1. whether fascinated or like, there are whites who are not fascinated and or dont like natural hair. for whatever reason people met a few white people who ask about their hair or complement their hair and then believe that every white person on earth “loves our hair.” its just not true.

130. Actually when I look at the clip it’s very clear that she is joking, however I can see how natural sister’s will be offended.

1. Personally, it didn’t appear to be a joke…and even if it was, why joke about something like that. I get that “it’s just hair” and all, but right now, so many women are coming to terms with and loving their natural hair textures. So this just seems like a slap in the face to the “natural movement”.

131. that’s really sad. there are a lot of women today who come from that “good hair is silky smooth” era. She is one of them. Thank god we don’t have to believe that hype anymore, but she does not help the cause by opening her mouth on national television to further the myth that afro hair is nasty. It’s a shame. I really don’t think she realized the power of her words. She’s ignorant.

132. Natural hair is beautiful but only if it’s a certain type,to some as long as it’s soft, fluffy and you can still run your fingers swiftly through it,,most love it unfortunately for nappy hair that is more coarse some don’t find it attractive, she is way out of order though.

1. the fact that you just said only a certain type of natural hair is beautiful makes you as much of a fool as she is. you can grab a seat and go sit next to her. you are right there with the drag queen

1. I’m wondering if “maxine’s” punctuation is off. If the comma goes after “to some” instead of “certain type”, it reads differently. Not defending her, but this proves how important punctuation is in the English language.

1. No I meant some ,if I wanted to say a certain type I would use that reference fortunately punctuation has nothing to do with your choice of words..as you can tell she is joking, why are some so quick to anger and rise up there’s to much tension in the natural community and some certainly need to relax their attitude.

1. Maxine, I don’t even think you know what Courtney is saying. Re-read what it is that she wrote because the placement of the comma changes the sentence completly…..and you did use the words ‘a certain type’

1. So true Julianna. I’m not an English teacher but even as I read her snarky reply to Courtney, I saw all the missed punctuations, run on sentences…it was driving me nuts! lol!If you’re going to be snarky…be grammatically correct. It comes off waaaay cooler! lol!

2. I was not trying to be snarky whatever that means, but both your fellow commentators have been nice and dignified in their responses to me and its nice when people can come together and point out any errors in a helpful way.

2. Thanks for any any help you were trying to give lol, that’s the thing with reading a text it’s very easy to misconstrue something the wrong way.

1. Maxine,

Courtney was just trying to help you out of the hole you dug. It took a minute, but it seems you were saying that SOME people hold that ignorant opinion, but you weren’t saying YOU do, right? If so, that’s not what you wrote. Grammar and punctuation IS essential.

2. We shouldn’t judge so harshly. I feel bad for Sheryl. I believe she’s spoke from a place of pain….and didn’t even realize it at the time. She grew up amongst Black folks as a dark skinned girl who was considered ugly with “bad” hair. She always talks about how unattractive she feels she is on the show and in her comedy routines. It couldn’t have been easy for her growing up. Think about it. She felt that she had to make fun of herself before others did. My guess is that someone may have said that to her when she was young. Personally, my heart goes out to her and all of our little dark Black girls who are made to feel that even their own people don’t find them attractive. I hope that once Sheryl watches it back, she starts to deal more deeply with those feelings. In the meantime, instead of attacking her, we need to be more understanding. What’s nasty are all of the horrible comments that these “so called” enlightened Black people are making about her. It’s all so sad.

133. Underwood’s comments are disrespectful and ignorant and come from low self-esteem. Underwood(Underdog)looks very un-natural with that straight hair on her head!
She needs a OVERHAUL including her hair. She should be happy to be nappy!
How sad is she.

134. I think her response in more of an indication of how she feels about herself. I guess that’s why she wears wigs all the time.

135. Shut up Sheryl Underwood, your buck ass teeth is nasty.
Wait till your relaxed hair starts falling out like you’e been using NAIR.

136. I’m taking in the whole scope… wonder how this ‘The Talk’ show doing in the ratings. Keep in mind you guys, this is TV — editing, material, timing, lights, EVERYthing is engineered for them to MAKE MONEY. I’m quite certain this woman is well-aware of the overwhelming natural hair resurgence. She’s always been shocking right? So for her to say these things — to stay relevant — is not that surprising. I’m also sure her handlers & PR team could care less about the backlash & are concerned more about the ‘buzz’ — a bit insidious, but it’s the nature of the industry. Take it all with a grain of salt people. Aisha didn’t do much because her ‘script’ yes, there’s a loose script for everything on TV, didn’t allow for her to be opposing or controversial — not enough time. It’s very off-putting that it went by so quickly with everyone laughing it up. What I took away from this clip [if she still does this] is that Heidi saves everything, which is sweet. Everything else is distracting, self-deprecating cackling bs. Let’s keep our heads… and our gorgeous kinky, coily, curly, wavy hair 😉

137. It is her issue. The more we rock and embrace our hair and beauty, it will inspire others. Someone like her who makes comments of that nature really shows her inner issues.

138. Okay people stop taking things out of context… Sheryl meant no harm in what she was saying. Stop being up tight about stuff that is irrelevant and be fa real. Would you keep your child afro hair? I know when I cut my own I don’t keep it so why would I keep my child afro hair. STOP GETTING YALL FEELING HURT OVER STUFF LIKE THIS AND WORRY ABOUT THE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS IN LIFE.

1. Well as a matter of fact i will be cutting my soon to be four year old’s son hair for the first time in his life and i have every intention of saving his long gorgeous afro tresses!

2. this is a natural hair site. this site is meant for topics like these. If you want something more involved with politics and what is going on with the world, go on another site that talks about politics and what is going on with the world. how stupid would it be for people to come on a hair site and talk about anything else besides that. it’s really not that hard sweetheart

3. Read for context next time. It’s not about keeping hair, while weird to me, isn’t to other women/mothers. It’s about how she went about denigrating a hair type that a lot of black people possess. Damn y’all.

4. Mothers keeping/saving their children’s hair isn’t a new concept. My ex boyfriend’s mother kept his (afro) hair after his very first hair cut. You. Know a lot of little boys keep long hair until they’re about 4 or 5 years old. So, why can’t a mother whose children has afro/kinky hair keep it? Why tell your cohost, oh, your children have silky hair, therefore it’s ok to keep it. We now know and understand the root of this mentality and its time to let it go.

139. This is disturbing that she’s saying this. It shows a lot about herself. 1. That she doesn’t love her own natural hair and sees it as “less than” and not worth as much as “straight and silky” hair
and 2. that she doesn’t mind judging mothers for their choices
and 3. that she doesn’t mind insulting children.
I hope that she’ll think about her statements and later on further explain herself and apologize. 🙁

140. Noxeema Jackson need to take off that wig and tell everybody she Wesley Snipes on, yet another, black bashing campaign

141. My son has a rat tail. When he turns 10 I am cutting it off and putting it in our scrap book.
Sheryl Underwwod or whoever she is sounds like a women will low self esteem and a case of envy. Listening to how she described afro hair compared to a silky strand of hair I was a little disgusted.
She can call herself ugly all she wants and do whatever she wants to change what she doesn’t like about herself, but don’t push your negative views upon other people and especially children. The audience and cast mates where no better clapping and laughing along with her. If it was the View and Whoopi heard her, she would have cut it and corrected that foolish opinion.

1. So true! Whoopi would not have allowed that foolishness. I believe Aisha and Sheryl know they’re fortunate to have this gig and the difference between them and Whoopi is obvious. Whoopi has paid her dues so essentially she can say what she wants. It’s said a paycheck makes you sell out like that. smh

142. So sad, but you know we have to realize not everyone has broken the ties of the slave mentality.

What bothers me is that Aisha Tayler simply smiled and laughed along with her. There’s no way I’d sit idly buy and cosign such foolishness in fron of white America. As Sara Gilbert tries to salvage it, and give some leeway to clear things up, she digs herself deeper. This makes my head & heart hurt to see a Black woman cosign a society of white supremacy. To say to an audiance of who knows how many, that no one wants Afro hair and to praise “silky” hair is a reality check. That yes, people still shuck & jive and hate themselves. I can only hope thar she not only sees why what she said is shameful, but overcomes her self hatred.

1. take it for what is was. a poor joke.

slave mentality seems so far stretched.

sheryl underwood is always making jokes about black stereotypes whether on the talk or on the steve harvey morning show.

i would argue that many of the women and men on here haven’t learned to fully accept their hair as is as they are hyper sensitive towards any person including comedians who make a comment that they disagree with. its just so hypocritical.

Women on here acting like they have never heard anyone not like “nappy” hair. sheryl isnt the first and wont be the last comedian to make a joke about black hair.

143. As horrible as her comment was I’m not phased by her comment. I’ve been natural for 6 years & that won’t change because of her views. She thinks its nappy hair but she’s probably natural under those bad wigs so no reason to be angry. Just continue to love you and the hair god gave & let those that hate continue.

144. LOL. This is coming from a comedienne that tells jokes. Why would I take her comment serious? I laugh at her. She tells jokes. She is a JOKE. Meaning I’m not taking her this “comedienne” serious.I know my hair looks good. I could care LESS what she thinks or the society thinks. So I’m over getting mad at people who dislikes natural hair. Just throw shade ladies **shrugs** Plus I don’t watch the show.

145. Too bad she’s almost bald and her permed hair is damaged under that wig she’s always rocking. Maybe if she knew how to care for her hair she wouldn’t have such a low opinion of it.

146. I wouldn’t say it didn’t bother Aisha Tyler but there is a time and a place… That was not the time nor the place for a discussion of Sheryls ignorance because she would have gotten loud and boisterous!! The Talk would have turned into Jerry Springer with no resolution.

147. Seems pitiful and sad, I think the only reason the other women laughed is because they were probably thinking- ‘Well if you laugh at it, I might as well laugh at it too.’ Heidi probably wasn’t too pleased at the comment. We have to think too that other races make fun of things about themselves-it just seems a little more hurtful for our race because we’ve been called ugly for all of those years..

148. I just think it makes her look stupid. She exposed herself as incredibly insecure and sorry to say, but she looks so silly with that straight silky weave/wig on her head. I can’t even imagine what Heidi would have thought; how insulting to her children and their gorgeous afros.

149. the hypocrisy by the visitors of this blog is crazy. some of the same commentators who are going in on Sheryl Underwood are the same ones who just a day or two ago was against Solange’s hair being worn out in a natural state.

so many visitors of this site get all up in arms when someone goes on tv and goes in on natural hair when you all do the same thing on here. sheryl isnt the first to prefer straight silky hair and shes not going to be the last.

should sheryl have said what she said? probably not but dont judge her for not accepting afro textured hair when many of you all dont accept afro textured hair either unless its fully manipulated…. ijs

why even question aiesha tyler- shes not the natural hair police. shes wearing a silky weave tooo….

1. yes. i see your point. although, i think some walk a line between preferring a “polished”/controlled appearance for natural hair and preferring a certain texture.

for work, i prefer to wear my hair up because i don’t have to worry about it. i can think about other things. don’t want to think about my hair going into a poofy ball or whether the style is holding.

but i do suspect that sometimes the objections to the way some people wear their styles have to do with texture and a discomfort with it.

personally, i prefer my hair to be big. i normally make my twistouts/braidouts big and don’t care for the extra definition that brings that “controlled” or “polished” look.

but whatever…

2. Yeah except from the Solange article the posts in question were commenting on her STYLE not her hair so…..#pointfail

150. Sheryl Underwood really, are very ignorant along with other on self hate..I wonder did she realize how silly she sound talking about natural hair..

151. Sheryl Underwood really, are very ignorant along with other on self hate..I wonder did she realize how silly she sound talking about natural hair..

1. Natural hair by no means is Nasty….what is nasty is gluing someone else hair to your head or better yet….wearing a wig because you want to be someone you are not…be proud of the way God made you..I am natural and proud.

152. This is disgusting. I cannot believe someone would say such a thing especially when the article was in reference to a mother saving her child’s hair. She not only insulted Heidi Klum’s child, but she just insulted an entire generation of children with lovely, thick, textured, versatile, and beautiful AFRO hair. That’s just sick. This is a whole new level of bullying and it needs to STOP! “If you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all.” I believe that was taught in grade school. Somethings should really be kept to oneself. She did not have to go there at all.

153. Let me start by saying I wholeheartedly disagree with Sheryl Underwood’s comment. They come from a place of ignorance and shame.
That being said, I also disagree with the hate going on above based on this woman’s physical appearance. Seriously, we are all fully grown – it sounds like a school playground with the comments on her eyes, skins tone and choice of hair. Instead of throwing hate, I would suggest that we try to educate those people around us so there is no chance we interact with people holding such small minded views on afro hair.

1. well said. completely agree. many of the responses here are no better in substance than what cheryl said.

154. When I first started watching The Talk, I was a fan of Sheryl, and a bigger fan of Aisha Tyler as well, but as time went on, I started to dislike them. Their backbone went out the door after a while, especially when sharon says some stupid shit. You can always find those 2 black women ki ki-ing up. I expected better from them, given their background and accomplishments but i’m over it, them, and the show.
Man!! I miss Holly Robinson-Peete. Almost certain she wouldn’t have said any dumb shit like this. Oh well! What do we expect from someone suffering from self esteem issues? Sheryl hates her hair and is self conscious about her weight and shies behind sara gilbert and julie chen, so I damn sure didn’t expect any better from her.

1. You’re right and perhaps that’s why Holly Robinson Peete is no longer on the show. She is a strong Black woman and definitely has an Afro-Centric attitude. I know she wouldn’t have let those comments slide.

1. While I believe her comments are foolish and harmful, I think we should be wary — insinuating that a black woman is “mannish” is not less rooted in dehumanizing stereotype as calling our hair nasty and un-beautiful. All these things were used to make us seem less-than and to justify our enslavement, control, and apartheid. We should not partake in them against our own, ever, even in anger. There are plenty of justifiably harsh words to use about her *speech*.

155. tragic . we really need to petition to get her off the show this is sad. to go on national tv and coon her own race news flash even if you wear that strigy synthetic shit on your hair your still black that “nasty afro” hair still grows out your scalp. now if a white person would of said that we would be callin al Sharpton and screaming racist but since shes black its ok?? smh something needs to be done im tired of seeing 5 and 7 yr old girls running around with no edges . and its always the fat black dark girls who have self hate not throwing shade but we as a community not just natural hair need to get it together . ppl like her are creating children and teaching self hate I feel bad for her children if she had any. we need more positive images how can we expect anyone to respect our race when this happens?? sometimes its not bad to air out our dirty laundry we need to talk about this self hate and where it stems from then maybe we can nip it in the bud. its a shame we have gone down hill we were once pharaohs and queens . we as black people need to join together because ignoring it WILL NOT MAKE THIS TYPE OF STUFF GO AWAY ! bY IGNORING IT OTHERS WILL THINK ITS OK TO JOKE ABOUT IT

1. “and its always the fat black dark girls who have self hate ”

I think because of the historical mammy connotations, that the black woman was large fat and extra black in complexion. Fat and black became synonymous with ugly. So if one finds themselves in the combination of fat, black and ugly then comes the low self-esteem and self-hate.

1. but the ignorance comes from every size , shape, and complexion black woman….just watch Gabrielle Union on oprah’s channel. You would think a woman as attractive and talented as Gabrielle Union would have better self esteem. The ignorance is rooted in the mind, they have “stinking thinking” they need to change the condition of their mind. Mental slavery is a hell of a thing.

2. youre just as ignorant as cheryl. reread what you wrote and all of the ignorant stereotypes written…

1. I am following the thread quiet well, but obviously it can become confusing because when different people are posting at the same time responses are not necessarily logged and presented in order. I like to make sure I know whats what before I respond. The low lying rudeness if not necessary.

2. It seems that maybe you are replying to ColaLover but your reply seems be under Jessica or maybe it is to Jessica who knows…cause instead of simply saying to whom you were responding you decided to not answer, which is weird.

156. Yeah she has dark skin but those googly eyes sticking out just makes her look scsry,it doesn’t do her justice as her jaw, chin maker look like she’s in drag. She looks like a dude, masculine shoulders! She needs to see some real natural beauties with actual pretty feminine features. There is nothing attractive about this dog.

157. There r no words. I am so ashamed for Cheryl. I pray she issues a statement to clarify her position. Even with the poor quality of the video, it was evident that

other hosts were uncomfortable with her bafoonery

1. They didn’t seem uncomfortable to me and the audience laughter? Well lets hope that was the “laugh machine”. People like her are ridiculous and this why white people will come and appropriate black hair and make it cool and have the black person looking like a fool. Like how in the world can a white woman love afro textured hair more than this black clown. Doesn’t she see how foolish this makes her look?

158. W/ a face like that, no wonder she is disgusted with herself. I didnt want to go there, but she did. I would hate to see what her hair looks like under her wigs, since she’s so ashamed of it! She should try to love herself, and she wouldnt have so much self hated! So sad when ppl want to be something they are not. I see that she is part of the brain washed masses of ppl who think only one way is right. Somebody pray for her. She needs it. I am proud of my hair and hopefully it works out for her.

159. Well I’m not surprised, ugly straight wigs that look stupid on her. Was anyone shocked by this big chinned googly eyed retard? Looking like a man in drag she needs to have several seats._ _ __ Her personality is as fake as her wigs.

After all she is an idiot affiliated with the most shameful, red neck, racist political party in the history of the United States. We all should thank the Republican Party for keeping this token he/she man beast around for their pet to mock and laugh at her horse hair behind her back.
I hope Heidi Klum straight punches this dummies lights out! Now that would be funnier than her pathetic comedy act!

1. I don’t think name-calling for name-calling is very mature or classy. What does her politics have to do with her views on hair? Are you saying that black republican or independent conservative women can’t be hair naturalistas?
Sheryl Underwood made comments I disagreed with; but you took it to a whole other sub-level with your remarks.

1. I agree name-calling is no help at all.

But, let’s face it, the GOP is majority white. And white people may be more likely to be ignorant to our hair, simply because they don’t ever deal with our hair. And if your only experience with our hair in its natural state is to hear prominent Conservatives saying it makes you look like a thug or see that black women have been spending decades and a ton of money to cover it up, you’re going to think it’s bad. That’s why people are bringing up her politics. In the Democratic party, I’d guess that most of the people who feel this way are black women between 40 and 65 (I see it in my own family.).

For all races and every political orientation, if you still hold this belief, it comes from a place of ignorance and/or social conditioning. It’s a generational thing. And I hope it’s changing for the better.

2. Why that wasn’t very tolerant.

Interesting that in your post below, you use the word “dark” in the same way Sheryl described our hair and you have no nerve to call her ignorant? Pot meet kettle.

160. when mothers insist on over growing their kids’ hair – this is how the hair looks, feels and gets described as. hair shuld be 3 inches long – maximum. any longer and it becomes a nuisance.

1. Agree with you, by doing that you are showing your child her hair is more important then her.

161. I never found Sheryl underwood funny its the black people of her ilk that undermine our progress to see ourselves as equals to the other races ,I don’t mind the word nappy but she used in conjunction with the adjective nasty,i don’t watch this show and I never will, her hair looks ridiculous it does not fit and she is inauthentic ,that’s what a white person said about blacks who wear weaves, not that I care what anyone thinks but this seemed honest ,its clear this woman has some issues, her skin is that fabulous cocoa brown and I bet she does not think its appealing, the best thing on Sheryl underwood is that skin period damn her for saying such ignorant sh..

162. WOW!!!!!!! We need more positive role models with natural hair!!!!! that embrace our culture!!!!!!!!!

163. Boo, Sheryl Underwood. Very disappointing, but not surprising. Better to keep your mouth shut and have others thing you’re a fool, than to open your mouth and prove it.

164. I can’t be bothered with Sheryl’s silly coon ass. She made her career off being a buffoon and she will likely continue to be one.

165. There are no words…. If you don’t personally like natural hair then that’s on you. However, to coon on national TV about it is, imo, deplorable.
