4 Natural Hair Styles that Can be Done in 10 Minutes or Less

As naturals we’re always looking for easy and cute ways to style our hair. Well, at an October 2011 meetup stylist Tamika (featured yesterday) did 4 different natural hair styles (a twisted bun, flat twists all around, pompadour + bun/braid and chunky flat twists) in less than 10 minutes! The styles can be modified for a variety of lengths. Check out the video below and let us know your thoughts! What do you think of the four looks? Which one would you rock?

Note: Video sound quality isn’t great, but the styling is very clear.

  1. Omg…loved this. My hair is finer, so I’ll have to work with this, but I’m going to try her styles!

  2. Going to natural hairstyles…no relaxer in my hair for three years……I wear crochet braids and I am going to take them down…..Don’t know where to start or what products to use….My hair is very coarse and thick..Help!

  3. Do you have styles for finer hair?? My hair is not thick at all!! So these do’s usually don’t work for me.

  4. Hi, my hair is fine and its shoulder length. I am in no way a stylist and I don’t know how to do much with my hair. On top of that I’m in law school and I don’t have time to re-braid my hair every single night (which takes me about 30 minutes…I braid slow) but I want my hair to look nice. I need some suggestions on quick, CUTE, 5 minute protective styles hair I can do with my length and type of hair. I like the ones you did but they don’t work on my hair and I’ve tried to manipulate them but it just takes more time. I just want something low maintenance, quick, and cute. The flat twist all around is one I already do but I like to have options. It just seems every time I research protective styling its always for people with longer or thicker hair and I don’t want to wear my hair in those flat twist all the time. If anyone can help please let me know.

    1. I have had a great time trying some of these styles. All you have to do is wrap your hair up at night. Each style last for days. I just redo them, although, they still look great. I got my hair to grow, now I want to look cute with these great updos. Good luck

  5. LOVED THIS!! and thanks everyone for the info on the stretchy comb!! Her edges lay down so easily it seems, does anyone have any suggestions on products to lay down edges? Anything that won’t cause too much build-up :)?

  6. I know I’ve seen these combs at Rite Aid and thought they just get tangled in my hair. I’m gonna have to pick one up so I can give these styles a try. Only I don’t use any heat in my hair so getting that smoothness won’t be so easy.

    1. My sister (who I encouraged to go natural & has been natural WAY less time than me haha) showed me, yesterday, how to stretch my hair out without heat. It was just sort of like bantu knotting large portions of my hair … I just stretched it out and pinned it so that when it dries the stretch is maintained without creating the texture/curl of bantu knots. I bet you can find something on Youtube about no-heat stretching!

  7. hello i just wanted wanted to say your website is really helpful but i have a question my hair is type 3c/ 3 its looser than 3c but not as loose a 3 but i was wondering why everytime i do a braid out it never last what do i do to keep it up i looked on youtube and i tried a lot of things but sometimes it comes out right and lasts but mostof the times it doesnt…what do i do? also what do i do with my hair if i run a lot can i wet it and condition it every other day or is that bad and im 15 fully african american my natural hair is neck length idk if you need to know that and so far my hair has been growing ALOT all i do is wash and deep condition every sunday and co wash on wednesday or sotimes twice a week and put it in a bun every day ans sometimes a braidout but comes out wrong a lot but im so happy i just dont want to mess it up because cross country starts i hope u can answer all of my questions lol thank you for your time 🙂

  8. THANK YOU for this!! I have been beating myself up for the past few days because I could not think of anything to do with my hair!!! Awesome.

  9. this is SUPER!!!!! my kiddo can do these but my own hair is too thin. healthy, bit thin. anybody try these on thinner hair? i LOVE this look but not sure how to modify it for me n all this scalp, lol.

  10. Awe inspiring;) the best / most informative post to date. Love Tamika’s color. Look forward to more from her including caring for color

  11. LOL! The lady in the red top behind Tamika is in awe. And I know how she feels…I just read Tamika’s interview and I realize I really need to stop pulling my hair back in bands (I wear an afro puff every-single-day). I have yet to master a twist out because I don’t know how to deal with the two distinct textures on my head. The top is kinda wavy with no curl pattern and the back and sides are coily. I don’t know the hair types. Sigh! You can literally see where one pattern ends and the other starts. Oh and I love these hairstyles!:D

  13. Here’s my rendition of the EZ comb hairstyles from Tamika’s tutorial.

  14. I love these hair styles! I wish I could style that fast without even looking in a mirror! BTW, another brand of the clips she uses in the video are “EZ Combs.” I bought a black one by scunci that cost about $5-$6. Then I saw a 2 pack of the ez combs at sale at Ross for $2.99! So now I have a black one, a brown one, and a silver one. So if your’re near a Ross store, they may have the clips for a lot cheaper than in the regular store.

  15. Wow, Tamika is a bad a$$! So creative and quick. Makes me want to start experiencing with my hair now, I’ve been so lazy lately.
P.S. I love the facial expression on the woman in the red behind Tamika.

  16. Thank you so much for this! Love them all, even used one of em for date night and had compliments and no problems. Can’t wait to try the rest of em, so great!

  17. I love all of them! I could only achieve that on lightly blow-dried hair as well. I will try them all!

  18. Ladies I’m inspired! Im so delighted 🙂 that you like the the styles! Thank you BGLH for sharing video.! Thanks Lisa Michelle! Who knew. I promise to post more tutorial videos on natural resources tv on YouTube very soon! To answer your questions I stretched my hair with my favorite blow dryer made by chi/Farouk. It’s called Deep Brilliance. And Earths Nectar Hair Conditioning Cream. I’ve tried lots of blowdryers over the years and it’s my favorite. The black clip in my hair is made by Conair! It’s called the Up -zing! I love it! I found this one at Target. I’ve also purchased at CVS, Walgreens, and Wal-Mart, Enjoy!

    1. Thank you so much Tamika! Who knew that my cell phone camera video capturing your awesome skills would be such a hit! You are a fabulous stylist and I am so glad to witness your beauty and talent! Keep doing what you’re doing, and much success at Essence this weekend!

  19. I’m definitely trying these beautiful updos! I’m a sucker for a classic bun, she just took buns to another level! I love them all! Thank you for sharing your talent and your story! I’m bookmarking your style page!

  20. Makes me want to play in my hair! I like how quick these styles were since I’ve just started a new job and don’t have time to do my staple mini-twists for the time being.

  21. I really liked this post it was incredibly helpful. I’ve been searching everywhere trying to find some quick and easy styles. I was on facebook the other day looking for easy styles and came across this product called The Gud Stuff. I looked them up after I used some at my sister’s house two months ago to do my twists.

This stuff is serious. I love love the way it makes my edges soft and it’s excellent to lock in moisture, it’s a super awesome sealant. I use it for my son’s eczema too and I’ve already seen drastic improvement in just two weeks (you have to be consistent though.) I use the unscented on him… I got the Sunset in Senegal one for me, smells awesome. I hope they start retailing in New Orleans soon… I think they are Houston based..Check em out. http://bit.ly/get-The-GUD-Stuff

  23. This woman hair colour is da bomb!!! If I ever consider colouring my hair that colour would be a great place to start. Please keep posting more articles like these I will definitely try these styles.

  24. She was amazing!!!! Can’t wait to get a bit more length to try out these bad boys. So inspired!

  25. Wow,i really enjoyed this video! More styling articles please. Not only was it easy but i love that the same accessories was used to give a different finish.:)

  26. This is probably the most helpful post I’ve ever seen on BGLH! I wish there were more videos like this — quick tutorials that just get the job done!

    1. This!^^

Thanks BGLH and thank you Tamika! I do not have the patience to make a turkey sandwich let alone do more than a WNG these days and while I love styles I see, I’m painfully lazy and anemic so I get sleepy even thinking about the energy needed to do them.

So happy she demoed the pomp-braid, it’s even cuter than the pic in her interview! I’d need to do it wet though, my hair is a forest and you wouldn’t BELIEVE the prison-arm strength required to style it dry!

  27. WOW!!! This was my first time in a salon since I embraced my natural hair and now the video is up on BGLH!!! Sound quality is bad, I think I recorded on my phone, but you can pretty clearly grasp the excitement in the salon. Tamika of Natural Resources is a pro at quick styles and I’m so glad I’ve gotten to collaborate with her 🙂 Thank you BGLH for posting my video 🙂 Find me on FB, http://www.facebook.com/thishairofmine

  28. how did she stretch her hair out? looks like it could be a blow out? what’s the best way to stretch hair out regularly, I know heat once in a while is ok, but I’m looking for a weekly way

  29. Nice! I don’t think I can pull off a pompadour but all the other styles I’d love to try. Thanks for sharing this!

  30. Her styles are cute and quick if you have the length. She is lovely and I love her hair color.

  31. SO loving the twist all around….i’ve tried all of them before…butt hat twist all around is so nice. think imma rock that tonight! Thanks for the video!

  32. I am VERY impressed with her creativity! I really enjoyed watchting those easy do’s. I can say that I am the “Get up and Go” type of girl when it comes to managing my hair especially having a very busy life. I just wanted to know, where can I find that hair black comb piece that Tamika used in each one of her demos? That was a great signature piece for each style and I would definitely like to use it!

    1. Wow! You and your hair are gorgeous. I definitely cannot do a wash-n-go, but yous looks lovely!

    2. I just bought my upzing from CVS. That’s what it’s called. I’ve also seen them at Wal-Mart. About $6. I got the large size in black, but they also have medium sizes. I plan to get the medium one to at some point. HTH!

  33. She is a hair maven. I’d rock all of those syles. Laila Jean of Fusion on Cultures has a nice array of hairstyles as well.

  34. Thank you so much! We have to share the wealth when it comes to hair victories! Beautiful girl with beautiful head of hair.I must find that stretchy comb thing! It looks amazing! Hey BGLH could you do a post on NATURAL HAIR TOOLS MUST-HAVES. From wide tooth combs to that stretchy comb thing. I think that would be so helpful to us naturelles.

    1. Lisa,

I remember it was on infomercials a few years ago, but now they sell it in stores. I’ve seen them in Rite-Aid in the hair accessory aisle. I can’t remember the name of the product, though. Sorry.

    2. Another company called HairZing also makes them, just google the name. You can overlap two as well like shown in the pic. They also have decorations on some to add abit more oomph to your styles!
