Picture of Black Woman's Lips Prompts Racist Comments on MAC Cosmetic's Instagram Page

This is the picture that incited hundreds of hateful and racist comments. It was posted to MAC Cosmetics’ Instagram page yesterday evening, with the caption “Royal romance at @ohnetitelny #AW16. #MACBackstage #NYFW”
lips1
Within minutes it was swamped with hateful comments from fans, some of whom said they would unfollow MAC’s account.

The comments are a poignant reminder that physical features typical of black women are seen as beautiful, but not when they are on black women.

According to the NY Daily News, a new study shows that 36% of young women aged 18 to 26 want lip injections before any other enhancement.

  1. They’ll make fun of our lips while simultaneously trying to get lips like ours. Jealous bitter heffas.

  2. I’LL SAY IT BEFORE AND I’LL SAY IT AGAIN WHITE WOMEN ARE JEALOUS OF BLACK WOMEN THAT COMMENT OF THEM SAYING ‘WE ARE BEAUTIFUL’ IS PATHETIC THEY HAVE JACKED UP TEETH, THIN LIPS, FLAT BOOTIES, NO BREASTS AND NO SOUL/FLAVOUR. THEY PAY TOP DOLLAR TO TRY AND IMITATE BLACK WOMEN BUT THEY STILL CANT MANAGE TO REVERSE THE SIGNS OF AGIN! ????. PLEASE WHITE BITCHES KEEP INJECTING YOUR FROZEN FACES WITH POISON LOL! IT STILL DOESN’T ALTER THE FACT THAT YOU ALL LOOK 30 AT 18 ????.

    #GODBLESSTHEMELANIN

  3. Damn people stay hating on us but then turns around and copies it. I thank God I was blessed with my full beautiful lips and thighs. #Godmadenotmanmade

  4. The model is beautiful. To combat racism, we have to confront it and defeat it not ignore. The human dignity of black women should always be respected.

  5. White people do not have a right to call black people the n-word whether it ends with a -a or a -er. Because that’s a racial slur your people have created and still use to this day. Yeah life is really unfair sometimes.
That black people have tried to reclaim the word in order to remove its hurtful meaning is irrelevant to you.
And not all black people use the n-word so i hope you don’t think you can walk up to any black person and use that then cry about “black people use it all the time”

By the way if black people refusing to let you call them n-words is an example of racism to you, then it must be nice being clueless and priviledged like you. I’d like to not know what racism is too.

  6. Those people posting those negative comments are ignorant and racist. But you should ignore them. There is always going to someone against you. Instead of showcasing the negative comments only, why not bring to light the comments that supported and praised the model? Although I don’t think we should ignore all racism, I fell like this could have been a far more helpful post if it focused on body positivity and love of many instead of the hate of the few.

    1. I think ignoring this problem is what has allowed it to get so bad. What have people done in the past with things like this? Ignored it!
Ignorant people who dare to unfollow Mac because they post the lips of a black woman, or ignorant people who flood a beautiful black woman’s photo with negative and racist comments should not be just ‘ignored.’ This is something that needs addressing. What happens when you fail to oil a squeaky wheel? It gets squeakier and louder.
It is not okay to be racist and disrespectful anymore. It just isn’t I suggest that no one should stand for just sitting and watching racism happening. Same thing with bullying – do you sit and watch or do you make it stop?

  7. Nope, what I meant was black women embraced feminist belief systems, which brainwashed them into believing they didn’t need black men to raise children. Thus those same black women raise black boys, that grow up to seek out the same white women which their mothers emulate and listen too. Which is why online zines like madamenoire, feature articles telling them to swirl. lol

    1. Just STFU with this god damn feminist crap that you stupid black men love talking about!!

    2. No. Black women naturally have a sense of dignity, of strength, of respect, and of power.
What this means, is that so much of that self respect, dignity was being pushed down and away by the black men who didn’t push their own. It takes TWO. TWO have to be on the same page. TWO have to be good to each other.

Black women saw that they don’t have to stay underneath as under dogs anymore. That isn’t feminist sh**t. That is realizing their self worth.

And then the black woman who realizes their self worth raises their children to realize their own. If that means they don’t settle anymore for Any black man but are truly specific; to find the black man that meets them at that level, then so Be it!

That isn’t “feminist belief systems,” man…

  8. Dam people make me sick. Last time I checked nobody can help how they look or came into the world . She is beautiful.

  9. No the “n word” coming out of melenated people is ignorance. The “n word” IN ANY FORM coming from a Caucasian is racism…

  10. she’s gorgeous. they will stay mad. that is their default. i would be mad if i were them too.

  11. So? … we dont have to have thoughts on this. Stop rising to a few ignorant baits and being so reactionary. Ignore. Asking for our thoughts on this subject matter is like asking us to explain why it is necessary to inhale and exhale. Next!

  12. Unfortunately, this is what I have experienced in the country where I live in the EU as
    well.

I can remember when I was younger the kids would point at me and ask me
questions or make comments like: ‘Why do we have THESE lips? African lips are
fat. I like blacks but their lips are so fat.’ etc etc the list goes on. NOW
since three years ago and also since The Kardashians ( a lot of young girls
have been loving this show and how the women look) all of a sudden some
“friends” are saying: ‘ OMG I wish I would have your lips. OMG I want
those curves OMG I want that ass’ etc. And to be honest although I am feeling
flattered when people give me those compliments it makes me also sad and also
angry. It makes me realize that people seems to follow aso called ‘trends’ (for
example it was a trend to date black boys…).

I believe that there are a lot of people who love people by heart (no matter of
the skin color, no matter of the ‘trends” and so on). I also believe that
we have people who are just curious and sometimes don’t realize how rude they
become. However we have many people as well who feels like they need to like
you when a certain group does…

Back to the lip problem I don’t want to blame the Kardashians or whoever
because fact is we all have a brain which we can use. It is important to learn
to have an opinion. Those people who follow the trends doesn’t seem to have
that. I can remember when one ‘friend’ of mine told me she is so jealous of my
lips. It looks like Kylies lips. At that moment I thought there are a lot of
black women who have those lips already without injecting. We have various
black women with different features. Like other ethnicities. Why are these
people putting us always in this little cubicle which gives the information: bad
hair, bad looking color, aggressive body short, less various features (one way
    of look): UGLINESS.

I agree that sadly many physical features of black women are still considered
as ugly or unattractive while on white women it is considered as beautiful because of the society we live in
and the media and maybe some other reasons.

I think on both women (no matter
what skin color) big lips look good or it can look not pretty (but who am I to
judge I am not perfect as well).

And those stupid racists who wants this barrier (race barrier) should be ashamed of themselves. Those women
who were commenting on that photo with n** lips or las labios de negra are
those who will go and inject that shit in their lips behind our backs and will
tell us : that a mosquito has bite them and their doctor told them it won’t
heal anytime soon so they are embracing their lips from now on.

I hope that this comment won’t be considered as offensive. Also I don’t
want to put on some shade on anyone with different skin tones or ethnicities
(No discrimination).. It is just that this post reminded me on some sad stories
from the past. I love that we have different kind of women in our world with different
looks and their own way to embrace it. Today I am happy that I am proud to be who I am.

  13. I was a MAC make up artist for 3 years. MAC’s slogan is: All Ages, All Races, All Sexes’! This is why I loved the brand – no matter who walked into the store – it was our job to make him or her look the best version of their beautiful selves! It was an honour to work there & to this day I love their product & still do make up professionally using MAC products.

It makes me sad that women hate on each other – Black, White, Asian, Indian, any culture – it doesn’t matter! We are all human & I celebrate the fact that all women from all races/cultures/ethnicities have something beautiful & unique about them!

Let’s celebrate one another – not tear each other down <3 I for one think this photo & those lips are natural & gorgeous! I love being able to transform skins & make women look & feel beautiful no matter the colour of their skin.

  14. I don’t care about ppl like this that post these comments and that is all they do, post them. These 20 ignorant ppl do not represent all caucasians. There just 20 ignorant ones. I’m ignoring and going back to my life.

  15. I come here to this site often when I want to surf the web, but like other people have said you’re starting to get a bit heavy on perpetuating negativity. You post multiple articles per week about how people don’t like this about us, they don’t like that about us… yah being able to say oh well I love myself is good, but constantly being told the negatives of society is just giving platform to racism more than calling it out. I know this gets you more clicks and views, but you’re doing it at the expense of women who might want to be uplifted instead of brought down all the time. To respond to the article and join the comments: being different is hard, and when you’re the only full lipped person besides your family that you know, you can feel like an alien (I did!), but as I’ve grown in age and confidence I’ve had men and women of various races compliment my hair (kinky) my body (curvy), my eyes (nearly black), and my lips (big, and brown). People who hate are not interested in how we actually look, they just know this is a way to put people down and they’re using it. We should stop taking the bait and lift ourselves up, and be with people who aren’t so insecure that they dig for reasons to insult people.

  16. MAC’s Instagram have long catered to a 99% white demographic, I’m not shocked at all and I hope MAC uses this as a LESSON LEARNED and begin using more than 1% black women on their Instagram.

  17. The model’s lips are beautiful & she has gorgeous skin. Haters gonna hate, & it’s a shame people haven’t evolved past skin-deep reasons for doing so.

  18. It’s just like our ass. We’re “fat” when we have an ample ass, but they will pay top dollar to have one just like it. I say “Eff them all”!!! They don’t define our beauty.

  19. Some folks hate what they cannot steal or claim. We know this about them. We all should be laughing and posting altered full lip” White women and how much they paid to get them.

  20. I say let them pay thousands of dollars a year for what we get naturally… It don’t hurt my feelings AT all

    1. Nor should you! We should all be more grateful for what we are given. Life is too short for so much fighting all the time.

  21. That’s why they have botox… the same one’s who put these ladies down will be the same one trying and wishing they had such gorgeous lips.

  22. What’s new? Yet, collagen is in huge demand. Jealousy has always been the root of racism.

  23. So black women are ridiculed for their natural beauty by white women who think it’s cool to inject ass fat into their face? Gotcha ….

  24. Its all jealousy, ignorance, and did I mention jealousy? They wish they had our juicy full lips, our round perfect onion derrières, and chocolate skin and amazing hair like no other. They hate us cause of what we have. Yet they are running to the nearest cosmetic surgeon to get all the things they say are gross to them…
    sigh….

    1. Seriously, no collagen, no duck face selfies… I can see why the poor things are so mad. 😉

  25. This really shouldn’t have been an article. We already know about stuff like this is rampant on social media–so no shock there. Really don’t give a f*ck what ignorant people think.

As for the picture, I just don’t like the close up or the lipstick color. Everything else, her skin tone and lips are gorgeous!!!!

  26. Nobody’s shocked. White woman are so jealous of us. Jealously breeds hatred. They want our ass, our lips, etc…The problem comes in when black people (especially black men) co-sign this fuckery and put the white woman above the black woman. This happens every single day. I couldn’t give less of a fuck about what a bunch of thin-lipped white bitches say. All I say is continue to be truthful with your real feelings about black women. Don’t smile in your black “friends” face when you truly feel like this. Be a full grown woman about it. Don’t be a punk.

    1. Or maybe nobody is above anyone? Fight back by being better, not a mirror image of what you resent. It’s far more powerful.

    2. WHITE WOMEN ARE JEALOUS OF US?? THAT WAS ABOUT AS IGNORANT AS THE IDIOTS MAKING DEROGATORY COMMENTS ABOUT HER LIPS. WHITE WOMEN DON’T WANT TO BE BLACK. LOL AND FOR ALL THAT BLACK WOMEN PAY AN AWFUL LOT OF MONEY TO HAVE WHITE WOMEN’S HAIR . SEE HOW DUMB THAT SOUNDS. RACIST PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARE DISGUSTING!

      1. Correction: I have never bought Caucasian bundles, but, please, carry on. Do Indians and Malaysians have “white hair” growing from their scalp??? That was a tacky counter argument.

      2. Why are you trolling on a website devoted to issues that confront black women and making comments?! you just proved the point that was made about white’s obsessive jealousy of black people! Why would you even be on this forum reading comments?! Is it because in your paranoia, jealousy and insecurity, your racist behind is trying to figure out what we are discussing?! Get your life, privileged imbecile!!!

    3. Do you even realise how racist you sound? Generalisations about huge group of people is stupid. It’s the core of racism and ignorance. Just read your own words from the other side: “I couldn’t give less of a fuck about what a bunch of thick-lipped black bitches say.” “Black woman are so jealous of us.”

      1. black people have a right to be angry, that’s not racism. black people slaved to make white people rich, a privilege we (white people) still have, thanks to slavery.. and thanks to taking every part of black culture, repackaging it for white people and pretending it’s ours. oh and if any of them get a bit angry about any of this, be sure to immediately put them down and tell them they’re stupid racists

      2. She doesn’t sound racist to me. She sounds hurt.

When black men, who know the struggle, run to white women for petty and shallow reasons other than sincerely loving the person, that hurts black women, who feel the struggle.

There is a difference between dating outside of races because you love the individual sincerely and dating outside of races out of spite, anger, annoyance, and out of what you “hear” about other races. There are black men that do this, and “abandon” (so to speak) the women of their own color. Black people have been put down for so long, it’s necessary to learn to stick together, to help each other and to love each other.

So when this poster said what she said, I read it coming from a hurt woman who is tired of being put down, and insulted and put aside/overlooked for women of the white race. Not just by black men, but by media, by Hollywood, by normal day to day living.
        That’s exhausting.

    4. Preach Sangha!!! They are jealous of us LOL they age like dried up raisins and sour milk LOL! ?????

  27. White folk are some of the most hateful mf’s I tell you. They hate what other cultures have just to copy it. Ignorant people.

    1. Having lips so thin you’re nearly lipless is unwomanly and unattractive, and nulls out the beauty and femininity of the whole face. Kissably full lips is the ideal in womanhood. Her lover adores pressing lips onto soft, yielding, receptive lips. Even men around the world who’ve never seen black women admit they dream of kissing one. Struggling to kiss a hard, thin line under a hard beak-nose will never hold the same magic, excitement, or simply pleasantness of effect and connotation. “I prefer my women nearly lipless,” said no one, ever. It’s not shocking that lipless harpies under the Mac photo are so angry and bitter at a reminder and validation of an ideal womanhood and beauty they can never achieve naturally that they reacted viscerally to the threat, like monkeys flinging their own dung. Laughable creatures, exposing their insecurities for the world to see.

  28. I am not sure what the issue is here, honestly people grow up. I would love to have beautiful full lips like the beautiful woman in this picture

  29. I didn’t see any racism in the comments they posted. I’m not sure if calling them “fish lips” is racist. I would call them that, in jest, regardless of the skin tone.

    That said.

    Dear Black People,
    I’m Whitey and I apologize.

    1. So I guess saying “nigga lips” isn’t racist then. Did you read all the comments? Don’t be ignorant…

        1. STOP it with the “nigger” “nigga” argument!!!
Here are the facts and the REALITY:
YOUR WHITE ANCESTORS enslaved black people and called them “niggers.”
It is racist, hurtful, and hateful for anyone of white lineage to call black people “nigger” OR “nigga.” Don’t do it.

A lot of black people feel they are taking back the power of the word when they say “nigga”to their black brothers and sisters.

Are you a black brother or sister? No? Then keep that offending word out of your mouth or bear the consequences.

      1. They like to pretend to be stupid. Then they’ll try to convince everybody that they’re smart

    2. did you not see the comment “ni**a lips”????? or you just ignore all racism on purpose??

      1. So every rapper that uses the word “nigga” is racist”
Every time one black person calls another black person “my nigga” they’re racist?

        Oh right.

It’s only racist when white people do it.

That position is, of course, racist in and of itself but whatever.

        1. you damn right its racist when white people say ,it, especially to describe a person’s attribute. I myself am not a fan of neither white people nor black people saying the word, but when a black person says that word its not describing how you look. You fucking white people love to look for ways to excuse racism. This is not about “when black people say it” its about what was said in the comment to the picture in discussion. You want to talk about other topics, leave that to another discussion

    3. You didn’t see the comment on there that said “nigga lip”? How did miss that one. Look again! And justbso you know Fish Lips is a term that a lot of whites back in the days used to call black people lips. Kind of like the reference to monkeys. Just so you know..

    4. Comments like “Nigga lips” aren’t racist? And there were many worse comments, like this one.

      1. Yes, that certainly is worse. Then again, it wasn’t shown in the article.

And as I’ve said to others, the word “nigga” is used by black people all day long.

    5. It’s funny how you just happened to not see the white woman who commented nigga lips…. but it is to be expected. That’s how most white people view the racism we deal with daily…

      1. Whoa. Wait just a minute there. I’ve been told time and time again that only the word “nigger” is racist and that “nigga” isn’t.

If the word “nigga” is racist then there’s a whole lot of racist black people in the world.

  30. people are ass hats. that’s a gorgeous picture, and I’m ALWAYS wishing my lips were fuller and awesomer. lucky lady. <3

  31. They are beautiful lips!!! Anyone that has issues with these big, plump, voluptuous, tempting lips probably have fish lips!!! On behalf of the whole white race EFF those dumb jealous people!!!

  32. Big lips only look good when they are natural ! Those guppy lips women end up with after injections look very strange.

  33. I thought it looked just fine, like a normal, perfectly beautiful makeup advert. Why people need to be hateful in this already troubled world? .-.

    1. They’re her actual lips.

A lot of people have lips that look exactly like that by genetics.

      Sound more ignorant, John.

  34. Wow really? If they are offended by someones lips Than Mac don’t need them! Get real people! Bet they are the same women who pay big bucks for botox and fillers! I say flaunt what ya got ladies!

  35. This was the first article I saw when I clicked on this trending topic on Facebook, which only said users left “negative” comments on a photo on the MAC Instagram… I’m totally disgusted that such a lovely photo showing a gorgeous lip color on a woman that looks great in it would prompt such horrendous comments. Racism is the only ugly thing I see on that photo. 🙁

  36. Stay natural and stop the racism! Between the two pictures of the Caucasian woman, I prefer the lips on the left one!

    1. That’s the point. The Kardashian (jenner) girl got injections to get fuller lips…BLACK lips. BUT those injections look bad.

  37. It’s a reminder that there are idiots and racists out there, to be sure. But this is neither poignant nor proof of the comment “physical features typical of black women are seen as beautiful, but not when they are on black women.”

I’m all about weeding out the racist chaff, but a couple of comments on a MAC Cosmetics Instagram post? C’mon.

  38. In the three posted screenshots, I saw ONE racist comment… ONE. Where are these “hundreds” you claim?

    1. In the three posted screen shots, the majority are racist. The one super positive comment? Came from an instagram user with a super racist handle. I’m going to assume the best from her, however, and guess that she’s mixed race Black/Chinese and her handle is self depricating humor.

    2. They didn’t post them all. If you have Instagram you can see all the comments. Some of them are very rude and nasty while others are very supportive.

  39. It’s “everybody wants to be black, but nobody wants the negative consequences of being black”. Honestly I’m not even surprised; if it was a picture of some lip injected person then it would’ve been heart eyed emojis and that’s it.

  40. I feel like we spend so much energy defending who/what we are (black women) and our features that it is really exhausting. What we need to do is make sure we always support and prop each other up such that the voices of the racists reveal themselves as just that. It is when we wait for their response or we let them be the first to comment or we let our voices be drowned by theirs that we let ourselves down. Let’s focus on what is right for us, what is good for us and what can help us move up as a people. Let’s build, grow, succeed and eventually their voices will not matter.

    Prosperity is the best retort.

F*** these racist twi b*****, we loves ourselves anyway! They can kiss my big black a**! (I don’t usually curse but I had to let it out-sorry).

  41. A few dumb racists share their disgusting thoughts. Black girls reply, insulting white women in general…other white readers who don’t agree with the white racist comments then feel hurt and attacked…this cycle needs to be broken. The race issue needs some kind of Mandela…

  42. This comment is about my beautiful sista above with her full lips. All our lives we as black women have been made fun of because of our hair, nose, lips, breast, and butts. Now everywhere we look some heifer is imitating us. We were born with the beauty. But non-black women get theirs like this: If we’re so ugly with our features why is the whole world copying us?

    1. This comment screams you need a better education and upbringing. It is sad people are so racist to think this way!

      1. No, it doesn’t. This post is being honest, realistic, and upfront.
Your reply, however, screams that you need to take off those rose colored glasses and see the world for what it is.

  43. I,too , am sick of this mess, but I think it would be best to ignore this crap. Everytime there’s a negative story about ANYTHING,the media goes crazy repeating the nasty tweets & putting them up for all to see . This just gives those idiots TOO MUCH ATTENTION & TOO MUCH POWER! They look forward to seeing their ignorant remarks highlighted in the news. Most of those folks are probably social & emotional misfits living tied to a chain in the basements of crackhouses

  44. Lip injections, butt injections, root lifter, big hair, Bantu knots, twist outs, corn rows, tans, oh yeah! twerking. It’s all about that black love!

  45. Lip injections, butt injections, root lifter, big hair, bantu knots, twist outs, tans, oh yeah, even tweaking……hmmmm! I wonder why?!!! It’s all about that black love.

  46. People love black features as long as they’re not on black bodies. I bet if this was a white girl who paid for those lips, the comments would have been different.

    1. some women black and white have beautiful features and some women black and white regardless of those features are unattractive. This isnt a race issue but some women carry different features better than others.

      1. Her lips are beautiful and that is why folks like You pay to alter their naturally thin lips. If you don’t like us saying this, then log off

      2. No. This IS a race issue.
Are you kidding me? Reread this whole article again, and read all of those comments and tell me this isn’t a race issue. You are so blindsided by your privilege – no matter what color you are, you are so blinded by your privilege of you think this isn’t about race. Those comments up there came from a place of hatred, towards black women. You just cannot overlook that. Stop fooling yourself.

  47. Oh damn, the only thing I see here is whiteness in effect. Stupid, offensive whiteness. And the lips of a beautiful black woman.

  48. Thought #1: Why is it that all I get from BGLH is how much the whites and color-struck beige people of the world hate dark skin, kinky hair, big lips, wide hips, etc.??? Most of us grew up hearing insults about our features said to to our faces on a regular basis, so this stupidity from idiots online is not news. Are these articles supposed to be uplifting and unifying, or is the point to fuel anger and clicks?

Thought #2: Forget these fools…can someone please give me some tips on what to do with my high porosity, 4B hair that’s broken off in the front from too many puffs, now that it’s BSL???

Thought #3: I WISH I had lips like the gorgeous black women in these pictures. OMG they are beautiful!

  49. when the skin is DARK, BLACK watch out…haters gonna hate…but put those lips against WHITE skin…personally purple thick lips against BLACK skin is beautiful….BLACK is beautiful

    1. Do you mean that black women have to date outside of their race because black men worship women of other races day and night ???

  50. Ugh, the lips are beautiful.

I just want all racists to move to Antarctica and live in silence.

  51. Really I pity white women, their level of insecurity and envy it makes you understand everything, because they can’t get what black women have for nature only the plastic surgery can give them!

      1. When white women who have this attitude of victimhood really they make me sick! You white women should grow because this world doesn’t revolve around your ass!
