The black collegiate marching band is literally one of the coolest things you can experience in life. Even though I didn’t get the A Different World experience by attending a HBCU, I will always remember the days of being a kid going to the Labor Day Classic and watching black marching bands make a statement on the field and in the stands. There was so much soul emanating from those bleachers and the best part was the dance squads and majorette teams that pulled it all together. As a former dancer, I will always have a soft spot for a good half-time show, sequin costumes and doing choreography full-out. The following dance squads really set it off:
Southern University Dancing Dolls- New Edition “Can You Stand the Rain”
Alabama A&M University Dancing Divas- “Beat it Up”
Texas Southern University Motion of the Ocean – DJ Screw- “June 27th Freestyle”
Jackson State University The Prancing J-settes – Mint Condition- “You Send Me Swinging”
Alabama State University Stingettes- Mint Condition -“What Kind of Man”
Alcorn State University Golden Girls- Wale ft. Jeremih “The Body”
Virginia State University- Essence of Troy
Also this is just amazing:

Alcorn song was R Kelly -You Remind me
That what I was thinking.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen this before but is this only a HBCU thing?
It’s not too late 😉
I go to Virginia State, I’m so proud! #TrojanPride
Hail State! ????
doesn’t look like you can be a natural and show it, and be on one of these dance teams.
I’m actually apart of one of these squads and we were all natural except maybe two people. Wearing weave helped us look more uniform. Leaving natural hair out in the rain/heat and sweating can end in a bad result. We’ve done natural weaves before or even really curly ones just depends =)
Which is why I am disappointed that Tuskegee wasn’t on here.
We had cheerleaders and dancers with natural hair and this was back from ‘98-’01(shout out to Piperette Jerri!). Great teams, though!
Noted and updated. As a Houstonian, I should’ve caught that was the June 27th freestyle beat.
They were around LONG before Bey, so I think it’s safe to say, her dances are versions of theirs…
Please school ’em!
Though I love to see my Southern University on top (I am a two-time SU grad), I am rather partial toward those JSettes! I always enjoy watching them perform bc they so energetic and full of life and their routines are so original! Those ladies are ALWAYS smiling and I love how the squad features ladies of various hues of caramel and chocolate: beautiful! Thx so much BGLH for featuring these squads, and even the one from Virginia. I grew up watching all of the squads you’ve listed here, except for Virginia (all the other squads here are part of… Read more »
I also didn’t attend an HBCU so I don’t have a fave persay but wish I had enough energy and talent to move like that! Lol
man i sooo regret not going to an HBCU 🙁 .. cant cry over split milk and many moons past but gosh dern it 🙁 shoulda listened to my grandfather
I’m all for dance and being enthusiastic about your school.
I never understood why majorette dancing was so seductive.
For the Texas Southern University Motion of the Ocean, the tune being played is “June 27” by DJ Screw… similar track on both tunes but the tempo is much different.
Where is HU? Not only ar the ladies talented, they are brilliant as well. When i was a student at Howard, they needed a 3.2 to even apply
My God! Their bodies!!!!!….what gorgeous girls….Although some of the routines were overly sexualized….and they seemed to be all doing some version of Beyonce….lol….but I loved seeing them.
The Videos Were lovely.
For those of you that went to a HBCU I wish I had had your experience, so proud of all of you.
1) Jackson State University 2) Southern University
