#GetWellMeechy: Popular Natural Hair Vlogger Meechy Monroe Diagnosed with Brain Cancer, Suffers Multiple Strokes

In 2010, Tameka “Meechy” Monroe of The Monroe Sisters made waves in the natural hair community as a natural hair vlogger, dispensing detailed tutorials and information alongside her sister MsVaughnTV. A popular presence in the natural hair community, Meechy has traveled and participated in campaigns, meetups, and panels across the country and parts of Europe. Most recently, Meechy and her sister Vaughn teamed up with Beautiful Textures for the #TryTMS campaign, and with #TeamNatural_ for the Ultimate Natural Hair Spring Affair in Dallas. That was about 15 weeks ago.

Recently, followers and subscribers of Meechy’s YouTube, Instagram, blog, and other social media networks had begun to express concern over her absence online. As BGLH and other natural hair outlets learned late yesterday, Meechy Monroe has been away for reason that caught many of us off guard. On May 31st, Meechy was diagnosed with a rare sarcoma (vascular cancerous tumor) in her brain. The tumor caused Meechy to suffer multiple mild strokes, which led to certain physical and speech challenges — including an Aphasia diagnoisis (a disturbance in the delivery of language).

We reached out to MsVaughnTV, who gave us this statement on Meechy:

On May 30th 2014, Meechy underwent her first of two brain surgeries. It was this craniotomy which actually revealed the tumor. In preparation for the procedure, rather than lose her hair, she had it carefully shaved, preserved, and donated to Locks of Love — a not for profit organization which focuses on cancer patients coping with hair loss.

Now, after her second brain surgery on July 3rd 2014, she is making drastic improvements with the help of physical, occupational, and speech therapy and is currently awaiting the next phase of her treatment — radiation and chemotherapy.

As usual, Meechy is very optimistic and has been blessed with an amazing team of renowned surgeons, oncologists, and nurses whom are walking closely with her on the road to recovery with God leading the way!

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate thereon day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” Joshua 1:8

Meechy has also penned an open letter to her fans on her blog, www.meechymonroe.com. She will also be sharing more information about her battle towards recovery via weekly blog updates.

The outpouring of love and support has been nothing short of amazing. In a little over 24 hours, Meechy’s supporters have managed to raise over $20,000 toward her costly recovery.

It is at times like this that standing as a true natural hair community has the power to make all the difference. The Monroe family has been brave and supportive during these challenging times, as Vaughn and Meechy’s mother and father are Meechy’s around‐the‐clock caregivers. Medical care is woefully expensive, and the Monroe family is not afraid to ask for help in this incredible time of need.

Vaughn and the Monroe family need the BGLH community’s help as Meechy fights the toughest battle of her life. Meechy’s recovery expenses will tip the scales at over $100,000, and every dollar counts. Please donate to the #GetWellMeechy Medical Expense Fund via GiveForward.com at this link: #GetWellMeechy via BGLH. For every donation made from a BGLH community member, GiveForward.com will contribute $15.

Please keep Meechy and the Monroe family in your thoughts, prayers, and meditations. They need all of the positivity and encouragement we as a community can muster at this time.
You may also send notes and letters of light and love directly to Meechy at this e‐mail address: GetWellMeechy@gmail.com. Tokens of sympathy and support can be mailed to P.O. Box 286621 Chicago, IL 60628.

I’m a student nurse in the UK and am currently doing my work placement at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neuroscience so I have patients with Meechy’s condition and similar. My heart goes out to her and I will definitely be donating to my sister across the seas. As a natural hair community the strength we show and the support we offer each other in times of need whether it’s struggling with hair acceptance or dealing with health issues, such as this, is nothing short of remarkable and it makes me proud. Get well soon Meechy! P.S. I am… Read more »

yeah in the US you’re pretty much screwed if you’re poor or even just right above the poverty line. gotta love our politics and profits‐over‐people health care system. but on a lighter note, i’m glad she’s doing better (i’d never heard of her before this) and that she has such support!
Also, i would love to live in europe! ^^

God says that the prayers of the righteous availeth much and I urge us all to pray for Meechy for a complete healing and strength for her family. I don’t have the money to contribute to her recovery but what i have i give whole heartedly, prayer and thanksgiving that our Heavenly Father is the healer and he will heal her.

Can she sign up for Obamacare? I work for myself and have a pre‐existing condition so I was never able to get health insurance. Last November, I signed up under the Affordable Care Act and had health insurance coverage from Aetna by January 1 for less than 100.00 a month. It was put to full use as I was hospitalized just a month later. I think having private health insurance affected the quality of care I received. I’d think that Meechy would qualify. If she has zero income coming in, seems she would also qualify for Medicaid?

She probably doesn’t qualify. As a public figure and a pretty popular youtuber (among other things she may do that I am unaware of) her income is probably too high. I suppose

A high income would disqualify her from Medicaid but not Obamacare. With the Affordable Care Act, your monthly bill is based on your income. Those with high incomes pay more, those with low incomes pay less. Income isn’t a disqualifier. I can understand the need for a fund to cover household expenses but not a fund to cover medical expenses. Being uninsured and having a pre‐existing medical condition makes her a perfect candidate for Obamacare. I hope someone close to her sees this and helps to enroll her. No one has to be without medical insurance today. https://www.healthcare.gov/

I’m so surprised to see this. I never knew she was sick… I watched her hair videos, and I always evnied her hair (Who watched the tuck and roll tutorial???). It was probably hard for her to have to lose her beautiful head of hair… But thank God she’s doing well, and I pray she gets better.

That is very sweet of the Natural hair community to raise money for her like that and rush to her when she’s in need. That is what you call supportive, uplifting people. It’s about pulling one another up. This could make her day;coming back home and realizing there are people out there who cares. It sucks that health care cost that much. There are people suffering from deadly diseases and people have to worry about financial coverage.

I just had brain surgery last December and can TOTALLY relate to those medical bills. Even if you have insurance, it will never cover everything — leaving you with thousands of dollars worth of debt and out of work for a couple months or however long it takes for you to recover. I feel for her, getting my hair shaved and dealing with a scar that begins at the hairline was tough because I thought I would look like Frankenstein — but my family and friends didn’t care and eventually the hair grows back. Hair use to be my crown… Read more »

Glad you recovered from your surgery Violet.

Times like this only emphasize what a blessing our health is and what a gift life is. We take so much for granted. This is very sobering. Thank you for sharing this Christina, I am familiar with Meechy Monroe’s name, but I could have easily missed this. Glad to see us supporting this sister and her family.

Peace and blessings to all and a full recovery to optimal health to Meechy Monroe!

My best friend of 15 years who is now 28 yrs old, was also diagnosed with brain cancer this past May. Her first surgery was on the 19th and underwent a second one a week later. Unfortunately her recovery process has not been the best but I still have hope that God can heal her. She went home from the hospital on Memorial Day and was doing well while they awaited her chemo treatments to begin but fews days later everything went downhill, she had a severe stroke which stopped her from speaking and went back to the hospital where… Read more »
