5 Fly Natural Hair Styles That Can Withstand Humid Weather

Your hair is looking fly, but once the humidity hits, forget about it. Does this sound familiar? If you’re looking for a natural hairstyle that can withstand humidity or just look fine in spite of the moisture in the air, then check out these five ideas:

1. Messy Bun for Shrinkage-Prone Hair

Some of us love super sleek buns, but for shrinkage-prone hair, humidity can do away with that “laid” look. So, why not work with your texture, rather than against it? In this video, Zoe demonstrates how to create a super easy and cute messy bun with just one elastic hair band and a few bobby pins.

2. Wash and Go Sans Gel

I can’t talk about anti-humidity styles without including the wash and go. This tutorial, by Beautiful Naturelle, is great because 1) it is simple, 2) does not require gel, and 3) includes a finger-combing technique that removes/reduces tangles while distributing your conditioner. (Though the video is in French, English translation is provided on the screen.)

3. Pinned Curled Plaits or Twists

Now, many protective styles are a great go-to for humid days, but if you’re wanting to spice it up, check out this beautiful one by AfricanExport. You can also add accessories, but they are certainly optional.

It takes wearing my hair in plaits to another level where I feel I can make do, go out in public, go on a date, go to work … and let my face be in the forefront, my accessories speak …”  ~AfricanExport

4. Wet N’ Wavy Mini Twists

I can personally attest to wearing mini twists as a style for humid days (and even rainy days). Depending on how you do them, they just get better with moisture! I included this video by Koku because it showcases a few style options for wet mini twists.

5. Finger Coils on Kinky Hair

In this video, Jouelzy shows you how to create sleek, fresh finger coils on kinky natural hair.  The process does take some time, but it is super easy to do.  You’ll need some gel, a comb, and two-prong clips.  This style can withstand humidity and only gets better each day!

What styles do you wear on humid days?

I am going to check out Africanimports video now cause that just may work

I really may try the finger coils (been thinking about doing that for a min) and the pin-curled plaits/twists. Love both of those looks.

There’s also, you know, the plain old ‘fro… When my hair was shorter I would just make sure it was well-lubricated before carefully picking/combing it out and patting it into a nice rounded shape. At night I would just sleep on it (satin pillowcase) but at slightly longer lengths I would plait it first. With hair grease — yes, the kind with mineral oil or petrolatum in it — I could prevent some of the shrinkage that would come with the humidity. Otherwise, and again this was with shorter hair, I just went with it. Talk about soft…I knew one… Read more »

Yes. Even when my hair was relaxed it will still puff up and not hold the style. I can’t even do a twistout and put in a bun because the twists/curls will not hold. I don’t mind so much about that but when you are up the night before trying to perfect your twist out» it gets annoying lol!. I have just been doing mini twists and I style them how I like for two weeks. Wash hair and twist it up again. I have tried gels, mousse, holding products but you know when your hair will not stay! Accept it… Read more »

My hair loves humidity! I realized that I could wash and go without curling gels a while ago and my life is so much better. I still finger detangle/smooth my hair for less frizz, but skipping the shingling and praying hands has shaved about 15 minutes off my routine. Plus my hair seems to maintain more moisture and softness without the extra product.

Nice article, thanks for posting! How crazy is this? I’m wearing a wash n go on my 4a/4b natural hair with using gel now( and i washed my hair and made it like this last Saturday ), i finger detangled to get less curl definition, more volume and an afro shape. My curl pattern and wash n go results( which i’m wearing now ) are similar to the french speaking lady’s hair( except that her hair density is thicker/fuller than mine ) and.… we’re wearing basically the same hairstyle without planning to do so. I’m amazed at how two people… Read more »

I go for a tuck and roll or braids. It’s easy and now that my hair has grown out it takes less time.

I used to wear my hair natural in the summer and part of the winter, but now that my hair is graying and I don’t like coloring my hair that uses peroxide. I am now using Bigen coloring and that seem to last. One day when I get the nerve I may try to go “natural” with this coloring on it and see how long it last on my hair before the “little grey monsters” shows up. If anyone knows any other coloring products I can use while going all natural and can last a long time, please pass on… Read more »

I subscribed to Beautiful Naturelle because of this article. Thanks for the post. I have been looking for someone with my same hair and she’s almost an identical match. I used to hear people says omg she has my exact hair..hair twin etc. and never understand it. All the people I used to see that I thought had my same hair under further investigation turned out to be a braid out or twist out, or had completely different hair routines that would not work for my hair. I watched this girls videos and everything from the density, the curl pattern,… Read more »

HUMIDITY in my opinion, happens basically everyday…it is only moisturze taken out air. So think ant it weather is changing like rain appears somewhere suddenly and wind. What abt being cold inside workplace, it is kind like humid. What I find out a long time ago that really work is balanced moisturzed, protein, and everythng in hairproducts.… it doesn’t matter if you use frizz ease or hairproduct that doesnt contain glyernic. it only want moisturze because most is sucked up by air. I always co-wash abt 2 or 3x a week then leave in. clarify is detoxify clay, it is moisturzing… Read more »
