Introduce yourself!
T:
My name is Tammy McKnight. I was born and raised in Florence, SC, but I reside in Jacksonville, FL.

Why did you make the decision to go natural?
T:
It wasn’t my intention to go natural at first…I was just trying to get my hair as healthy and long as possible while in its relaxed state. I began to ‘stretch’ my relaxer from every 6–8 weeks to ever 4 months. Once I got used to having a relaxer every 4 months, I started stretching for 6 months. That’s when I got a glimpse of my natural curl pattern and fell in love :)! My relaxed hair journey was very successful, going from ear length to near bra strap length in a little over a year…but those little coils had me at hello lol! I’ve been completely natural for 10 months. I transitioned for 6 ½ months before Big Chopping.

How would you describe your texture?
T:
My hair is predominantly 3c/4a and extremely thick and coarse. I’ve always had a ‘head full of hair’…even when it was unhealthy, it was still thick lol!

Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
T:
I try to wear protective styles (buns, faux buns, and updos) at least 2–3 weeks in the month. This keeps me from manipulating my hair too much and helps retain length. I don’t wear full twistouts too often mostly because I’m not a huge fan of retwisting every night, which is necessary to prevent my hair from tangling. I prefer twistout bangs with a bun included. It’s less hair to manipulate, and the majority of my hair is protected. My other go-to style is ‘ole faithful’…the puff lol. It’s simple and requires very little for upkeep.

What does wash day look like for you?
T:
My wash days are long lol! I first spray my hair with water till damp and part in four sections. Secondly I apply my deep conditioner, which varies depending on how my hair feels. My hair is protein sensitive so I add mayo or an egg (only when needed) to my deep conditioner (Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Deep Conditioner, Organic Root Stimulator Pak, B.A.S.K. Y.A.M. Nectar or Sally Hansen’s Cholesterol are some of my primary DC’s). I add at least 3 oils to my deep conditioner, mainly castor oil, peppermint oil, and rosemary oil. I deep condition under the dryer for no less that 45 minutes. If time permits, I’ll deep condition overnight. Thirdly, I’ll co-wash the deep conditioner out using a cheap conditioner like VO5 Moisturizing Conditioner.

Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style.
T:
The majority of my styles are protective styles that last for at least a week, but when my hair gets out of hand, I slap a puff in it!

How do you combat shrinkage?
T:
After washing my hair, I’ll twist it, stretch the twists, and pin them down using bobby pins until they are dry.

What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
T:
My hair is prone to fairy knots (single strand knots) so I have to keep my hair moisturized, and I’ve found that keeping my coils clumped together reduces the risk of fairy knots as well.

What are 2 do’s for your texture?
T:
Weekly deep conditions and protective styling.

What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
T:
Combing while the hair is dry and not moisturizing daily.

Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
T:
You can find me on IG @mz_tammy or Youtube @ SupaNaturalTammy.

Her three strand twist tutorial is really good! With a good camera and good editing, I think Tammy’s hairstyles would fill a gap in the youtube natural community as very few bar Charjay and Jouelzy are constant stylers.

Hi Tammy!! I was born and raised in Florence as well, just had to say hello to a fellow Floridian????. Your hair is stunning!! I was searching for hairstyle ideas for my 7 y/o daughter I’m fighting to keep her natural until she’s able to make her own hair decisions but feeling pressure from family and friends to just relax her hair. ???? anywho your pics are amazing so I’ll be looking you up on IG. Take care!????

I did not add all those question marks. Lol those are emojis which apparently this site does not appreciate.

Hello Tammy! I have to say that your hair texture is my hair twin. That makes me so happy because I have been struggling for months to figure out what my hair type is. LOL I stopped getting relaxers almost 3 years ago but was still straightening my hair with a blow-dryer/flat iron every 2 weeks. The front of my hair still has very straight ends (I never did BC). When I do wear it natural I have to use perm rods on the ends. Thank you so much for contributing to this forum, I will definitely look you up… Read more »
