Introduce yourself!
L: I’m Lexi from Hampton, VA originally but I’m officially a Georgia Peach now. I have been in Atlanta for 10 years now.
Why did you make the decision to go natural?
L: I went natural because I wanted the versatility — being able to fro it out one day, wash and go the next, bone straight the next day. I can do whatever I want with textured hair.
How would you describe your texture?
L: The back is 3c and the rest is 4a with a little bit of 4b in the crown. My hair is definitely THICK!
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
L: My style regimen is that I have no regimen. I used to do a twist out every Sunday, but then I got tired of that. I wanted to do something different. Now, I am so random that I don’t have a regimen. One week I will have a weave, the next a twist out and the next week box braids. I try to co-wash every 4 days or so- depending on how hot it gets. I like to use sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners such as Aubrey Organics, and deep conditioners like Miss Jessie’s Rapid Recovery every 2 weeks.
What does wash day look like for you?
L: Wash day…well in my shower I have about 10 different shampoos and 10 different conditioners. I usually use Carol’s Daughter products though. I like their Monoi line. So first, I just rinse my hair. From there, I put globs of conditioner (usually cheap conditioner for this part like Aussie Moist Conditioner) and detangle my hair in about 4–6 sections using a paddle brush. When each section is done, I put it in a braid. I rinse the conditioner out with the braids still in and continue washing with them still in. At the end I put a deep conditioner in, and leave it in for about 20 minutes.
Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style?
L: A high pony tail. For sure this is my lazy hairstyle that can still be cute! I just pop on some earrings and go.
How do you combat shrinkage?
L: Most of the time I don’t try to combat shrinkage, but if I do get the urge, I will use a blow drying method that Titi & Miko of Miss Jessie’s taught me that helps elongate my hair. I don’t use the dryer to completely dry it, but just to stretch it a little. The first time they did that to my hair, I was in awe! I had no idea the real length of my hair because of shrinkage.
Tell us about your hair color?
L: I absolutely LOOOOVVEEE color!!! I originally got my hair dyed professionally, but after sitting around the salon and waiting…I decided to start doing my own. I use Dark & Lovely’s color in Light Golden Blonde. I haven’t had any breakage with my color. My texture has changed slightly, but not very noticeably compared to the other areas where there is no color.
What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require extra care and attention?
L: I would say the nape area. My hair is coarser there, so it tends to break a little in that area when I won’t have breakage any other area.
What are 2 do’s for your texture?
L: DO try to detangle every time my hair gets wet and DO use a great moisturizer at all times.
What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
L: DON’T try to do Wash & Go’s too much, and DON’T go more than a week and a half without washing.
Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
L: You can find me almost daily at www.curlscoilsandkinks.com. I have videos up on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/lexiwiththecurls and you can see me all day, every day on Twitter @CurlyGirlLexi.
Beautiful hair. Thanks for tips.
Lexi,
Is your color a permanent or semi permanent color?
Looks permanent–I don’t think you can go that light with semi permanent. It’s a beautiful color!
Beautiful hair and pictures! I love your youtube videos, so inspirational!
Pleeeeeease tell us what you did to get your hair like the last picture (where you have on the white tank).
I have seen her around I thought she was one of the owners of Miss Jessies, none the less her hair and eyes are fabulous!!
