Over the past few months several readers have asked us to break down hair typing. Whether or not you feel that hair typing is important, the fact remains that it can be difficult to follow along with online discussions without knowing the various texture references. After some searching we found NaturallyCurly.comโs hair typing guide to be the most comprehensive โ although it does not include a type 4c category โ so weโve included excerpts here.
Type 4 โ Kinky Hair
โข Type 4 is kinky, or very tightly curled, with a clearly visible curl pattern
โข Circumference: Crochet needle or even smaller
โข The hair is very wiry, very tightly coiled and very, very fragile
โข Type 4 hair can range from fine/thin to wiry/coarse with lots and lots of strands densely packed together
โข Type 4 hair has fewer cuticle layers than any other hair type, which means that it has less natural protection from the damage you inflict by combing, brushing, curling, blow-drying and straightening it
โข Type 4 hair is known to shrink up to 75% of the actual hair length
There are two Type 4 subtypes:
โข4b: Has a โZโ pattern, less of a defined curl pattern. Instead of curling or coiling, the hair bends in sharp angles like the letter โZโ; has a cotton-like feel
โข4b celebrities: Shingai Shoniwa
โข4a: Tightly coiled hair that, when stretched, has an โSโ pattern, much like curly hair. It tends to have more moisture than 4b; has a definite curl pattern
โข4a celebrities: Esperanza Spalding
Tips
โข Use styling creams, butters and oils for type 4 hair
โข This hair type needs extra moisture and tender-loving care because it can be fragile
โข Detangle hair with a lot of conditioner in your hair and use a comb or detangling brush
โข Let hair air dry or use a hood dryer
โข Do not use a brush or comb on your dry curls
โข Reduce tangles by sleeping on a satin pillowcase or wrap hair in a satin cap
Type 3c โ Curly Kinky Hair
Subtype 3c is really more than a subtype. Itโs a type NaturallyCurly members developed because the original system left out this hair type, which falls between 3b and 4a, having its own special characteristics.
โข Type 3c hair has tight curls in corkscrews
โข Circumference: Pencil or straw
โข The curls can be either kinky, or very tightly curled, with lots and lots of strands densely packed together
โข Getting this type of hair to blow dry straight is more challenging than for 3a or 3b, but it usually can be done
โข The very tight curls are usually fine in texture
โข 3c celebrities: Alicia Keyes, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Tracee Ellis Ross
Tips
โข Use styling creams, butters and oils for type 3c hair
โข This hair type needs extra moisture and tender-loving care because it can be fragile
โข Detangle hair with a lot of conditioner in your hair and use a comb or detangling brush
โข Do not use a brush or comb on your dry curls
โข Reduce tangles by sleeping on a satin pillowcase or wrap hair in a satin cap
Type 3 โ Curly Hair
โข There is a definite loopy โSโ pattern
โข Curls are well-defined and springy
โข Type 3 hair has a lot of body; it is easily styled in its natural state or straightened with a blow-dryer
โข It isnโt coarse, like many believe, but soft and very fineโthereโs just a lot of it
โข Combinations of Type 3a and 3b curls are common
There are two Type 3 subtypes:
โข3b: Medium amount of curl, from bouncy ringlets to tight corkscrews.
Circumference: Sharpie size
โข3b celebrities: Keri Russell, Bernadette Peters, Melina Kankaredes
โข3a: Curls are naturally big, loose and usually very shiny.
Circumference: sidewalk-chalk size
โข3a celebrities: AnnaLynne McCord, Debra Messing
Tips
โข 3aโs: Use gels and creams that offer light moisture and curl definition
โข 3bโs: Use gels and styling creams with extra moisture and serious frizz control
โข Use duckbill clips on the crown of your head to lift top curls
โข Let hair air dry or use a diffuser
โข Once your curls are dry, rub a little pomade into the palm of your hands and smooth over your hair gently
โข Do not use a brush or comb on your dry curls
โข Reduce tangles by sleeping on a satin pillowcase
Type 2 โ Wavy Hair
โข The wave or curl forms throughout the hair in the shape of the letter โSโ
โข Type 2 hair sticks close to the head; it wonโt bounce up, even when layered
There are three Type 2 subtypes:
โข2c: Thick and coarse and more resistant to styling and will frizz easily
โข2c celebrities: Jennifer Nettles, Daisy Fuentes, Brittany Snow
โข2b: Medium-textured and a little resistant to styling; has a tendency to frizz
โข2b celebrities: Joss Stone, Nelly Furtado, Carrie Underwood
โข2a: Fine, thin and very easy to handle; easily straightened or curled
โข2a celebrities: Scarlett Johansson, Naomi Watts, Cate Blanchett
Tips
โข Use lighter products such as mousses or gels that enhance curls, but donโt weigh them down
โข Use duckbill clips on the crown of your head to lift top curls
โข Let hair air dry or use a diffuser
โข Once your curls are dry, rub a little pomade into the palm of your hands and smooth over your hair gently
โข Do not use a brush or comb on your dry curls
โข Reduce tangles by sleeping on a satin pillowcase
Ladies, which hair type are you?
Jada pinket smith un does not have 3c type hair not by a long shot.
Have you ever seen Jada Pinketts natural hair. It is 3C. What is everyone talking about not by a long shot?

Hey I have4b type hair but its very frustrating , my sister has type 3c โฆ Is there any way I can chage my hair texture ? Or maybe stretch my curls ? My hair also has a very fast growth rate .โฆ But it gets tangled and knots and cuts how can I prevent this ? Thanks
What about 4C Hair?? โ_-
I cant decide if im 4a or 3c. I have a lot of hair. When freshly washed, not combed or anything it looks like 4a. But when combed conditioned and rinsed it looks like 3c so need help finding what i have!!!!
If 4b is the most wiry and tangleโy, definitely that one.
My curls shrink into themselves and its so difficult to keep it moisturized.

See included photo. I think my hair is 4a. Freshly washed with a leave in an grease I can scrunch it curly as long as I donโt touch it again later. It also straightens the same with water hair oil and a brush. I currently have a relaxer but if I brush my hair wet the edges wave abd shine. Itโs only been like this a few years. It used to definitely be 4b all the way any tips to keeping the curl?
The curl is gone, your hair is relaxed. The chemical has ruined the proteins of your hair, so it will not curl. Also, with your hair straightened, I cannot tell you what type of hair you have. The only way to tell is by seeing your natural texture; no, not your roots. After growing out a relaxer, you will have scab hair while it tries to become used to not being relaxed. Itโs damaged hair, and will not act the same as your healthy hair until itโs strong again. Chemicals, rough treatment (brushing, dry detangling, etc.) and heat will keep… Read more »
Donโt relax your hair if you want curls.

Posted earlier. Blow dries donโt work for me cuz I sweat a lot in my hair so itโs either up or scrunch curled. With or without relaxer. I did a big chop 2 years ago and the top was very curly wash and wear with a little gel. So I think itโs between 4a and 3c.
So you can talk about the addition of 3c hair but completely ignore 4c hair?
I think I have 4a hair for the most part and another texture because, some sections of my hair are more wavy compared to the rest that curls up instantly.
Hey guys!!! watch my new look in long hair!

I have been transitioning for over 5โmonths, my nature hair has the S like pattern too, can someone please explain to me, do I have weavy hair because of the Sโpattern or do I have to wait until all my hair transition to all nature?
Thank you,
Rosa
Hi Rosa,
Your real curl pattern will show itself, as soon as youโre done with the transition. Your relaxed hair is weighting down your hair or you can say stretching the hair. I remember that clearly back when I was transitioning. I am very surprised to see, that my real hairtype is a mix of 3b og 3c and not pure 3a, as i thought doing my transition.
Hope you could use it.
Best regards from Denmark
Nina
Hi, my name is kadeidra strickland and iโm really thinking about going natural, however i still have permed ends but i also had my ends trimmed a month ago, i also need help with knowing my hair type i just finished shampooing and conditioning my hair and i kind of a have an s pattern going on.
I think it would be best to wait until you have cut all the chemicals out your hair to really see what it can do. Thatโs what it took to for me to find out I am type 4a hair.. Good luck on your natural hair journey!

Now is only I could find my hair type! I think Iโm somewhere between 3b and 3c. I donโt quite have the definition of 3c. Iโd say the curl shape tends more to 3b but the texture looks closer to 3c, and when it comes to densityโฆwell letโs just not go there โ VERY.
I love reading through an article that can make people think.
Also, many thanks for allowing for me to comment!
I donโt understand why a lot of women claim to go โnaturalโ but then resort to straightening their hair on a regular basis. You are still causing damage to your hair regardless if youโre using a flat iron, blow dryer, or any other source of heat to straighten your hair. Itโs starting to get annoying when I hear women say something like โoh itโs been [insert number] of months since Iโve had a relaxerโ as they flip their hair. Thatโs nice ladies, but youโre defeating the purpose of going natural if all youโre gonna do is go back and straighten… Read more »
If you are using heat protectants, u out will do fine. Iโm going Natural because the chemicals are throwing my hormones off and Iโm trying to have a baby. I get my hair straighten twice a month and itโs chemical free. My hair is transitioning well and my hair is healthy. I had a perm since June of last year.

Havenโt had a perm since June of last year.
Great info! However why do most people think that people with 3 type hair have fine hair? My hair is THICK and big and bouncy, really thick hair.
Thanks once again girl!

ISSUE #1: 4c hair type was not mentioned at all
ISSUE #2: using pics of white celebrities to compare to various natural hair types.
@tha_niks, I 100% agree with you. I really have issues with 4c not being mentioned and what sense does it make to use pics of white women for a black hair forum. As someone who has just begun the natural hair journey, I want accurate and helpful information. Further more, Iโm pretty sure Debra Messing probably had her hair curled (not that it matters because again itโs supposed to be about black hair). I also believe that Alicia Keys and Tracee Ellis Rossโs hair types where incorrectly classified but whatever. Again, there are a few issues here.
Agreed! T. E. Ross has 3b hair. And I was wondering what happened to 4c.

Its fucked up how you didnt mention 4C hair type ! What type of racist shit is that !!!!
Why you have to curse at her? Thereโs tons of other websites that van give you information on 4c hair. Wow! Iโm sure she isnโt racist. Other sites give white ladies too as examples.

[โฆ] So itโs because of this multiple texture scenario that I donโt place too much stock in this kind of hair typing, but I suppose itโs good to be armed with all the knowledge out there. There are numerous other ways to figure out your hair besides just looking at a curl pattern. These things include whether your individual hair strands are thick or thin, and how porous your hair is. These factors all play a part in how you care for your hair and Iโll touch on them in future posts. In the meantime though, you can read up… Read more »

[โฆ] I have been getting a lot of questions regarding my hair type ever since my big chop. I donโt pay much attention to my hair type typically, because it is simply a guide. At the end of the day, I listen to my hair and care for it according to its current need. If it feels dry, I deep condition and moisturize. If not, I leave it alone. If you are a newly natural and is seeking help on how to care for your hair, the hair typing system can come in handy. I recommend reading up on it… Read more »

By looking at this site, I realize that I am a 4b hair type. Thanks for the tip
They probably didnโt include 4c because often times, 4b and 4c are grouped together. 4c is often seen as a more โchallengingโ version of 4b hair (according to Naturallycurly.com). They both have a Z pattern and little curl definition, so often 4c is grouped into 4b hair.
actually only 4b has a Z pattern,4c has an s pattern when u do a style with it though.
Type 4b is different than 4c hair. They shouldnโt be grouped together.
Exactly, 4b and 4c are two different textures.
My hair type is so confusingโฆ My hair is just wavy but it is not thin in any way possible it can go into an Afro and it is slightly below shoulder length when straightened and people always say I have a lot of hair so I guess it has a lot of volume and itโs very thick but I have thin strands but itโs just wavy never curly or ziggy. Sorry for my rant I just tried to describe it the bet I can because I canโt figure it out
[โฆ] to determine oneโs hair type, with the most popular being the Andre Walker system (found here http://bglh-marketplace.com/2012/03/natural-hair-type-guide-which-type-are-you/). Hair texture is determined by the thickness of each individual strand of hair. There are three [โฆ]

Interesting! Thanks for the tips. Have a great day!
THey showcased hair thatโs close enough to 4c hair. There is no significant difference between 4b and 4c hair. No one else sees the difference only black people.SO silly! Nappy is nappy!!
I have both 4c and 4b and I can tell you there is a difference,4b is definitely softer and it has patterns that 4c does not have, with 4b you can easily do a wash and go with a 4c it would be hard, both are freaking beautiful.
Can you explain what you mean by โnappyโ? I am trying not to loose my cool at the use of such a word.
They see the difference because they actually deal with it. saying nappy in nappy is ยดSO sillyยดbecause certain products donยดt work well for certain hair types and the ยดsmallยด difference is actually big when it comes to combing, flat ironing basically just managing it styling in general.
So i found out i have 4a hair thanks for the info. Now all the fuss about 4c not being mentioned is silly, from what i see the 1st young ladyโs hair is a 4c/4b they group those two together . Itโs not like they started at 3a. Live long and be nappy

I just found out that my hair type is 4c and it need more treatment than usual and my scalp is so sensitive ?
Mine is type 4, the best thing about my hair is that its very thick and has lots of volume ๐
Well, Iโve got 3c and didnโt know until now. My normal routine is wet-setting my hair in two braids overnight, then taking the braids out in the morning, separating the braid curls a bit, and then putting it in a half-up style.
Otherwise, I alternate between flat ironing and relaxing for a more polished look, but then the hair needs to constantly be moisturizedโฆ yes, my hair is a huge pain in the butt. ๐ Add seborrheic dermatitis to that equation and youโve got a nightmare.
