I recently noticed that a 2016 article on our blog, titled 28 Black Owned Skincare Brands to Try — was bringing in lots of traffic and sales.
Typically when I notice this I will edit the content to make sure it is still relevant.
But as I updated the article, I was disheartened to find that literally half of the businesses were gone — their websites down and social media pages inactive.
I deleted brand after brand, and by the time I was done editing, there were just 14 black-owned skincare brands left on the list.
Owning a small business is hard. Being a black woman who owns a small business is harder because we often lack access to capital.
All it can take is a few months of low sales, a shady contractor, or the unexpected breakdown of equipment to prematurely end a business’ life forever.
It made me even more appreciative of our customers — you have kept this business going.
It takes a village to raise a child. It also takes a village to keep a small business alive, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the village we have. ❤
