Shea Butter Doesn’t Hydrate?!

A few months ago we got this email from a customer: “I recently purchased the ginger blended and mango cocoa blended butters. I didn’t have the results I’d hoped for with using the ginger blended butter on my hair. It has only left an oil coating and my hair still feels like straw.”

Surprising right?

We at BGLH Marketplace are always talking about how moisturizing our butters are, so why would our product leave a customers’ hair so dry it felt like straw?! To explain this we have to get a little technical.

When it comes to preventing dryness, hair and skin products fall into two categories — hydrators and moisturizers.  Hydrators actually ADD WATER to your skin and hair. Think mists, spritzes and glycerin-based products. Moisturizers simply PREVENT WATER from leaving your skin and hair. Our whipped butters definitely do not hydrate. They consist solely of butter and oil, no water to be found. But what they do — and do incredibly well — is keep water trapped in your hair and skin, where you want it to be (the science-y term for this is ‘occlusive agent’.)

Shea, cocoa and mango butter are the PERFECT complement to hydrated skin! That is why so many of our customers use our butters right out of the shower. The butters trap the water, maintaining hydration for hours.

So be hydrated! Supply moisture to your hair and skin from the inside (by drinking lots of water) and the outside (by dampening, rinsing or washing your hair and skin regularly.)  Water and whipped butter are a match made in supple, soft skin & hair heaven! And as for the customer from the email above? Don’t worry! She went on to become a repeat customer! ????
