8 Reasons Whipped Shea, Cocoa & Mango Butter are Superior to Drugstore Lotions

I haven’t bought a drugstore lotion for personal use in 3 years. I actually went into Walgreens recently to buy one, just to get a sense of what is on the market, and when I squeezed it into my hand I was surprised at how gloopy the texture and how overpowering the “natural” smell was. It just confirmed my belief that once people learn about the power of whipped shea, cocoa and mango butter they will make the switch.

But first, what exactly are shea, cocoa and mango butter?
They are butters extracted from the nut of the African shea tree, cocoa bean and mango seed respectively. For centuries they’ve been used in West African, South East Asian, Caribbean and Latin American cultures to heal and smooth hair and skin. They are some of nature’s most powerful moisturizers due to their high emollient, anti-inflammatory and occlusive properties.

Whipped shea, cocoa and mango butter are a safer, more effective and truly natural alternative to drugstore lotions. Once you go whipped, you really can’t go back and here are 8 reasons why.

1. They reduce scars and blemishes
Shea, cocoa and mango butter are high in fatty acids, which regenerate the skin and even out skin tone — something drugstore lotions don’t do.

2. They soften skin over time
Most drugstore lotions do one thing: keep your skin from being dry/ashy for a few hours. But the effects of whipped shea, cocoa and mango butter are cumulative. After weeks (sometimes even days) of use, you will notice a permanent softness and smoothness in your skin. This is because shea, cocoa and mango butter have regenerative properties, and can return elasticity to the skin.

3. They have longer-lasting moisturizing effects (days vs hours)
Shea, cocoa and mango butter are some of nature’s most powerful occlusive agents — meaning they prevent water loss in skin. While many lotions provide a few hours of moisture before skin becomes dry again, whipped butters provide up to 36 hours of moisture and protection.

4. They have multiples beauty uses
This is the magic of whipped shea, cocoa and mango butter and what sets them far, far apart from drugstore lotions — they are truly a multi-use beauty product.

In addition to softening, healing and moisturizing skin our whipped butters can

Soften, condition and style hair (we actually started out marketing our butters as a hair product!)
Heal chapped and broken lips
Be used as a baby cream and diaper rash cream
Be used as a beard butter
Be used as a non-greasy alternative to massage/body oil

Introducing whipped shea, cocoa and mango butter into your beauty regimen eliminates the need for other products.

5. They heal dry skin, eczema and psoriasis
Many lotions on the market are divided into medicated and non medicated. Shea, cocoa and mango butter are medicated by nature. Shea butter is recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology to heal dry skin, and for centuries shea, cocoa and mango butter have been used to relieve eczema and psoriasis.

6. You get more bang for your buck
Whipped butter is incredibly rich — just butter and oil — so a little goes a long way, and less frequent application is needed because it is so effective. This means that one container can last for a really long time. Our 6 oz size ($45) can last up to 7 weeks. While our bulk 12 oz size ($90) can last more than 3 months.

7. The texture and feel are better
Many people worry that whipped butters will be too oily or heavy compared to drugstore lotions, but it is quite the opposite. The significance of whipping shea, cocoa and mango butter (which are all naturally dense) is that the introduction of air lightens the oil/butter mixture, making it soft to the touch and incredibly absorbent. It will glide on, warmed by your body heat and quickly disappear into your skin, leaving nothing but a soft glow. Lotion often comes out the bottle cold and can leave a film on the skin that has to be rubbed in vigorously to absorb.

8. They are food grade and safe for skin absorption
Lotion is the substance we apply most frequently to our skin, and according to Wikipedia “along with inhalation, ingestion and injection, dermal absorption is a route of exposure for toxic substances…” Unfortunately many lotions contain toxic substances, from parabens to phthalates to irritating chemical fragrance.

Our whipped butters are food-grade and completely safe for absorption. Shea butter is actually used for cooking in West Africa. And the raw cocoa butter we sell (which is used in all our whipped cocoa mixtures) can actually be used for baking. Likewise mango butter is used for cooking in some cultures. The other two ingredients used in all our butters — coconut oil and almond oil — are edible. Instead of chemical fragrances, we use organic extract and essential oils, which are also food-grade. Because all the ingredients we use have such long shelf lives, we do not add any chemical preservatives to our butters.

  1. I recently ordered the 3 pack sample and I am amazed at how great this product is! I’m 56 and my skin is starting to get dry and flaky. After using the butters I no longer have that tight dry feeling on my skin. I have the shea, mango and cocoa and I’m having a hard time trying to find out which one I like the best, they’re all great.

    1. Honestly any of the products are really great for dry skin! It depends on what scent you like, or if you prefer unscented.
