[Pics] 17-Year-Old Black Artist Creates Viral Challenge to Draw Black Women in Cartoon Styles

Avatar • Jul 22, 2016

By now, you’ve probably noticed a ton of these #stylechallenge photos being shared across social media. The concept is to recreate a self portrait in popular cartoon styles.
The tag was started a week ago by 17-year-old artist Autumn (@beautifulness87 on Instagram) with the following image.

Shortly thereafter, the tag erupted with artists of color displaying their skills.

Not only does this challenge allow many young artists of color to share their work, it also allows us to see blackness in cartoon styles that are not traditionally diverse. Check the #stylechallenge tag for more incredible entries!

Why does the color of your skin have anything to do with being an artist. Seems racially segregated here but whatever… Fantastic creativity and talent is on display.

The concept is to recreate a self-portrait in popular cartoon styles.” Do you not know how to read or do you just automatically dislike things that black girls are doing?

If you appreciate artistry you would see through the color. Seem racially segregated to even mention it.

This coming from someone who benefits from that segregation everyday. Shut up.

Freethought is a troll trying to devalue the empowerment of black people, who have been degraded for centuries. Black people are beautiful too. My favorite is the Daria version.

Because white characters in an all-white cast is seen as the norm, and with lots of variation in character archtypes, while characters of other races, particularly black, are either non-existent, or usually only put in to be a stereotypical one-dimensional “token” with little to no depth or character development. That’s why.

Oh, shut up already. If the characters & artists were all white, you’d think it was absolutely “normal.” So you’re showing your own racism–you ain’t slick! Now, buh-bye!

Amazing! Would love a cartoon geared towards children centered around black characters where at least 90% of the characters are black.

Boy, this really drives home how lacking in diversity so many of my favorite cartoons are. I found myself wishing that these were how certain characters had actually been drawn.
for shame Disney, CN, and Nick. Disney especially, who seem to know a littlebetter when it comes to live action on Disney Channel and XD.

Brilliant idea and I wanna see more.
All of the artists are brilliant.
