At this point in my natural hair journey, products that work for my strands in other seasons don’t necessarily still work in the winter. That is just the reality of my almost 8‑year strands. With the cold weather and the dry, indoor heating, my hair can become extremely parched and brittle. Thus, I have to switch up certain products when winter sets in. Here are my five favorite substitutions this season:
As I Am Cleansing Pudding
On most winter wash days, this cleansing pudding replaces my shampoo (which is typically Dessert Essence Lemon Tea Tree or Coconut). It is cleansing but also non-drying and does not leave conditioner buildup over time like co-washing does. As I Am Cleansing Pudding is very smooth and has a thick consistency that also makes cleansing my scalp especially easy and therapeutic.
Shea Moisture African Black Soap Purification Hair Masque
I also sometimes switch out shampoos for this masque. Just like the As I Am pudding, it is cleansing and beats co-washing. Moreover, Shea Moisture African Black Soap Purification Hair Masque goes the extra mile of giving my hair and scalp a deeper cleanse while increasing (yes, increasing) my moisture level. I mean, my hair feels like butter after using this product.
NOW 100% Pure Avocado oil
This is actually an oil I use in other seasons as well. However, I step up the use of it in winter, particularly if I’m wearing my hair in a flat-ironed state. Pure avocado oil becomes my moisturizer while minimizing the reversion that can come with using a water-based product. The ends of my hair especially love this oil.
Oyin Handmade Hair Dew
My hair loves this product in the winter and with minimal use of other products. If I start with one go at my whipped shea butter mixture and then use ONLY Oyin Handmade Hair Dew for the remainder of my moisturizing sessions, my hair is happy. This product is a perfect mix of castor oil, olive oil, aloe vera juice, water, and an emulsifier to impart moisture, pliability, and shine to my dry strands.
Softee Indian Hemp Light and Natural Hair & Scalp Treatment
And then there is my beloved Softee Indian Hemp Light and Natural Hair & Scalp Treatment, which becomes my super sealant of choice. If moisture retention is becoming extra difficult, I will follow up with this hair grease, especially on my ends, edges, and nape.
