I’ve been rocking box braids for almost 7 weeks now and they still look fabulous! The thing with braids is that their age begins to show when the roots grow out and our natural hair begins to peek through. The most important things to consider when trying to keep your box braids in excellent shape are
1. Make sure you get your hair done by a stylist whose work you’ve seen.
This is pretty self explanatory, but if you choose a stylist that does good work then you’re likely to have neater braids for a longer period of time.
2. Wash your scalp, but opt to hold off washing your braids until you really just can’t take it anymore.
I know there are techniques out there that help prevent frizz when rinsing braids and washing the scalp, but let’s be honest here, while braids are a great style for rainy climates, soaking them regularly in any kind of water will speed up the aging process.
My advice: rinse your scalp regularly with a witch hazel solution or try a dry shampoo and hold off on any kind of washing of your braids until you really feel you need to. And when you decide to, use the techniques I share in my journey to waist length here.
3. Use high quality moisturizing products 2–4 times a week
Because I know I’m not going to be washing my braids for a while, it’s important to keep my hair moisturized. The trick is getting the moisture and sealing action without any frizz at all. Thanks to a friend of mine, I learned about the Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner by Jane Carter Solution — an excellent water based spritz made with ingredients that moisturize without encouraging frizz. I follow that up with the Nourishing Pomade by CB Hair Care to seal in the moisture and nourish my hair.
