Textured Clip-Ins are Storming the Protective Styling World

Avatar • Sep 24, 2015

Last year, crochet braids were the protective style darling of the natural hair community, allowing us to experiment with big hair while protecting our own strands without the headache of full head weaves or an all day hair appointment. Well another trend has taken over protective styling that is even faster and simpler to achieve than crochet braids: textured natural hair clip ins.

Clip ins have been around for quite some time, especially for our Caucasian friends. I remember girls in middle school coming to class with streaks of blues and pinks in their blond hair with the help of clip ins, and there was even a time when clip in feathers and other decorations were hot in the streets. Even our relaxed friends have been able to enjoy the ease and simplicity of clip ins in recent years, because Remy textured clip ins have been around for some time. However, us gals who prefer to wear their hair in it’s textured, afro curly, coily, or kinky state have been relegated to sew-ins and wigs if we wanted textured add-ons for our hair.

Until now.

Several natural hair extension lines have released textures in clip in form that provide an astonishingly easy way to add length, volume, and drama to your natural hair. Don’t believe me? Watch me transform from an ok twistout to fabulous voluminous hair in just a few minutes.

Aside from them being quick and easy to use, clips-ins are a great protective style because they encourage healthy hair and scalp care. Weaves, wigs and even braids can make you forget about maintaining your hair health, while the temporary nature of clip-ins (though they can last up to 6 weeks), makes it more likely for you to continue your proper moisturizing regimen.

Here are 4 places where you can buy clip ins:

Kinky Curly Yaki

Kinky Curly Yaki’s carries 3 collections of textured clip ins that can blend with natural hair (though they carry an additional 3 more straight collections), in order of loosest to tightest curl: Kinky Curly, Afro Kinky Curly, and the Afro Coily. HeyCurlie above is rocking the Kinky Curly texture.

Her Given Hair

HerGivenHair carries 3 lines of natural textures that are also available in clip in form, simply named: Kinky, Coily, and Curly. MsNaturallyMary above is sporting the Curly texture in wig form.

Big Chop Hair

While Big Chop Hair carries 4 clip in textures, only two of them are probably able to blend seamlessly with natural hair: the Corkscrew Curl and the Kinky Curl. Above, Maria Antoinette is fierce in her colored Corkscrew Curl clip ins.

Private Stock Hair

Private Stock Hair carries a total of 6 textured collections that seem to closely mirror most hair type charts — Luxe Curl 1 (type 3a), Luxe Curl 2 (type 3ab), Luxe Coil (type 3bc), and Luxe Kink 1 (type 4abc), Luxe Kink 2 (type 4bc), and Luxe Kink 3 (type 4c).

What are your thoughts on using clip ins as a protective style? Have you tried out any of these brands? Are there others out there we should know about?

I purchased two 18″ bundles (on sale for $129 each) of the the Kinky curly (4c) clip in’s from Big Chop Hair after seeing Maria Antoinette’s reviews on Youtube (love her channel by the way). I also watched many other reviews of different brands of clip in’s before deciding to purchase. I absolutely love them but based on my experience, they were not “ready to wear” out of the box. I found them to be just a little labor intensive but seriously what beauty regimen isn’t? The clip in’s from Big Chop Hair came in the color 1B – dark brown (which I think is… Read more »

I’m guessing the industry’s finally figured out that there are type 4’s out here who actually LIKE their texture and don’t want to change it, lol. Fake hair’s not my thing but I’m impressed with how realistic these look.

Interesting. I have seen women on YT bobbi pin kinky tracks in between their hair for fuller look. looked great and probably cheaper.

Has anyone with inbetweener length tried any of these? I also have major shrinkage problems so would this even be a viable option?

I live in Los Angeles. I wish there were places that had them in stock so I could take a look in order to match my texture and get questions answered on length needed, etc.
