Yaniris from the Dominican Republic // Natural Hair Style Icon

• Aug 1, 2015

What is your name and where are you from?
Y: My name is Yaniris Acevedo, and I am a native of the Dominican Republic raised in New York City (Harlem).

Did you transition or big chop? Share your natural hair journey with us!
Y: I transitioned for five months. I’m not sure exactly what day in November I began my transition, but I big chopped on April 30, 2014. I have now been natural for a year, and I decided to go natural not only because I no longer wanted to be bound to relaxers, but because my natural hair is part of my identity and will always remind me of where I originated from.

How would you describe your texture?
Y: I honestly don’t use the hair typing system, but if I was to describe my hair I would say it’s thick, tightly curled or kinky curly. My hair density is very high and low porosity.

Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month, and the rationale behind your various styling decisions.
Y: Over the course of the month my hair regimen has been pretty much the same, alternating between wash and go’s and twists. My hair styling decision is based on my current mood or occasion. Twists are more of a sporty look for me and wash and go’s give me more of a classy and elegant look. I own tons of products but my top three product lines are Shea Moisture, Camille Rose Naturals, and of course Kinky Curly.

What does wash day look like for you?
Y: Wash and day for me is pretty much the same. I keep my routine pretty much the same. I use a Shea Moisture shampoo which is free of drying sulfates. Once my hair has been shampooed, I like to use a deep conditioner mainly Alterego Garlic Mask, and sit under a dryer for approximately 30 minutes for product penetration. From there, I rinse and style with any of the products that I mentioned above.

Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style.
Y: My favorite to go hair style  for when I have no time to style would have to be the twists, because they last for days, and all I need is accessories to give them a different look.

Tell us about your hair color!
Y: My hair color is currently by Creme of Nature in Bronze Copper. I had previously dyed it with the Shea Moisture in Dark Golden Blonde and Auburn. I do the coloring myself, and have my mom do the mixture for me since she’s a licensed cosmetologist.

What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require extra care and attention?
Y: The only problem area I have is that my crown doesn’t curl like the rest of my hair. I pay very close attention to this area when styling and make sure that it is well moisturized.

What are 2 do’s for your texture?
Y: Moisture, and clip ends when necessary are my 2 do’s.

What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
Y: My 2 don’ts are excessive heat, hair pulling or tightening of my edges.

Is there a blog/webpage or social media account where we can find you?
Y: I can be found on YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook as AfroDominican79.

I couldn’t comment when she first featured because Disques takes too long to load on here when I’m on my phone but anyways, I like that you wear your hair if certain ways and explore different styles and just be simple with your regime. I like all your photos but the ones that stood out to me was photo #7 and #8. Those Bantu knots are pretty. Go girl.
