5 Wash and Go Mistakes Naturals Make During the Summer

Because of the temperature, summer seems like the prime time to wear a wash and go. Your hair dries faster, you don’t have to worry about cold air, and there’s often more moisture in the air (depending on where you live). However, there are some things that you could be doing that can cause tangles or shorten the lifespan of your hairstyle. Avoid these common mistakes to ensure your wash and gos stay bomb all summer.

1. Wearing your hair out to the beach or pool

Yea, your fro looks amazing blowing in the wind while you’re frolicking in the sand, but trust me, you don’t want to deal with those tangles the next day. Get ready to deal with double the pain if you leave your hair out while swimming in the ocean or pool. Stick to more controlled styles like braids, twists, or buns.

2. Going heavy on the glycerin in your products

Because glycerin is a humectant, it attracts moisture from the air, which is often an issue if you live in an area with higher humidity. Heavy glycerin use can affect the hold of your wash and go, making multi-day hair impossible. Cloud hair is cool for a day or two, but over time can also cause tangles because your hair has more of an opportunity to tangle and twist around itself. If your favorite products contain glycerin, try sticking to using one at a time or overlaying the glycerin product with an oil or butter. You can even try increasing your silicone use to keep the moisture from affecting your style too much.

3. Skimping on your protein use

Protein-moisture balance is important during all seasons, and due to the high humidity many experience during summer, you may have too much moisture and that can cause mushy, undefined hair. Even if you’re low porosity (many of us low porosity naturals are protein sensitive), try using a lighter protein conditioner, like Curl Junkie Beauticurls Strengthening Conditioner once a week to keep your curls springy.

4. Not cleansing frequently enough

You don’t want to spend the dog days of summer focused on time consuming wash days, but properly rinsing and cleansing your hair during summer is super important. For one, you sweat more in the summer, which can cause your roots to tangle and mat. Secondly, build up causes frizz – one of the main gripes for those wearing wash and gos. If you’re not a fan of shampoo, use a gentle cleansing conditioner like Camille Rose Naturals Caramel Cowash or Ouidad Curl Immersion Co-Wash.

5. Using lighter stylers

Because air drying is a breeze during summer, you may be tempted to to style with leave-ins only or lighter curl creams. While these make your wash and gos fluffy and huge, it may also cause tangles. I use a gel that at least has a medium hold, like Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera Gel, which gives me a few days of wear without sacrificing big hair. Bonus: It’s not sticky and can be used on your skin, so I don’t have to worry about my back being sticky when it’s hot out.

Co-signing #5…I’m sitting here with KCCC in my hair right now thinking sh**…I should have stuck with the Wetline Xtreme. 🙁

However, I swim on the weekends so I can fix this…and my add-on tip for #1 is to always wear a cap especially if your hair is like mine (fine-stranded 4b worn loose, not braided or twisted). I recently cut my sides and back but my top is still pretty long and yeah…swimming with it free felt great, but it was not a good idea.

LOL I am not wearing plaits on the beach! I’ll bite the bullet and detangle the next day.

Would love your thoughts, please comment.x
