Though it might not feel like it just yet, spring and summer will soon be here and the various Spring/Summer 15 fashion week trends will soon be interpreted by retail stores at every budget. If you’re thinking about updating your natural hair this spring/summer or just curious about which hairstyles will best go with the reigning trends of the season, check out the following guide to natural hair styles that complement SS15 fashion trends!
That 70s Show
Seventies inspired fashion was the biggest takeaway from the runways last fall, so dig out your bell bottoms, floppy hats, suede handbags, platforms and billowy boho dresses. The 70s were all about being carefree, so pick out your fro and rock it as big as possible! To achieve a heatless fluffy afro, moisturize hair well with a butter based cream, detangle thoroughly, braid in large sections and secure ends with small rods. The next morning, take everything down and gently separate, fluff and pick your hair. Rodding (or bantu knotting) the ends of your braids will help you achieve that perfect halo effect, or you can spritz your hair lightly with water to encourage a natural shrinkage induced halo.
Bias-cut dresses and one shoulder looks were common on the SS15 runways. As a twist on last year’s popular tapered cut, go for an avant-garde haircut this season that slants dramatically either horizontally or vertically. If you’re too scared to get the look with your own hair, install some crochet braids and cut them on a bias. If you don’t like it, you can just cut the hair straight again! If you’re avant-garde, go for a haircut that slants dramatically either horizontally or vertically like Marie Antoinette and Rachel O Beauty
Florals continued to dominate trend reports for Spring/Summer 15, and particularly in bolder prints in accessories such as handbags. Wear the trend in your hair by digging out those flowers you used to wear in your hair when you first big chopped and add them to your Celie twists and low chignons. Set off your fros or bantu knots with a flower headband — just remember, the bigger, the better!
Sleek Center Parts
Many models walked down the SS15 runways with sleek center parts to complement the 70s, asymmetrical and floral trends they wore. While very few models were black and even fewer had natural hair, we can adopt sleek center parts with natural hair by making a few simple changes in how we set our hair. First, part your hair before twisting or braiding and do chunky flat twists in either direction — remember you’re going for sleek, not defined, so go light on the styling cream. Upon taking the flat twists down, apply a moisturizing edge control gel like LottaBody’s Control Me on either side of the part and tie a scarf to further lay your hair down.
Which of these looks do you think you’ll be rocking this spring and summer? Are you looking forward to the 70s throwback fashion trends?
