4 Ways You Could Be Hindering Your Own Natural Hair Journey

If you’ve been relaxing your hair for years and recently decided to rock your natural texture, getting your routine down might be a little intimidating. Who am I kidding? It’s definitely intimidating! When I stopped relaxing, I had to completely relearn my hair, which took some time. Here are some culprits that may be keeping you from having the natural hair you want.

1. You don’t listen to your hair

With the abundance of information available, we can absorb natural hair advice all day. You can watch YouTube, read blogs, go to the library, participate in forums and more. None of us have any excuses for being clueless about our natural hair. However, this can also be a culprit. We learn about so many things that we “think” we have to do, that we don’t actually pay attention to how our hair feels and acts. No matter what you see or read, it’s important to “listen” to your hair. If you read that deep conditioning 2x a week is beneficial (I’ve done this) and your hair starts feeling mushy, maybe it’s time for some protein. If you’ve read about the benefits of castor oil, but your hair feels dry after applying it, stop using it! Make sure your regimen is working for you.

2. You copied someone else’s regimen:

Many times, people visit my blog and ask me specifically what I “do” to my hair because they need a regimen. Although learning about someone’s regimen may be beneficial to your own hair journey, it’s important that you don’t blindly copy their routine. Why? Because we all don’t have the same texture, porosity or curl pattern. Additionally, we live in various climates that can also affect how your hair behaves. Learn from others, but make sure you tweak your regimen to align with your needs.

3. You use products that aren’t for your hair 

Remember, there are several factors that determine how a product will work on your hair. When I first big chopped, I thought that I needed the heaviest and thickest products because my hair is coarse. However, it seemed that these products would often sit on my hair to the point where I would see tiny beads of product sitting on my hair strand. After doing a bit of research, I determined that my hair was low porosity and began using lighter products with better results. This point is especially helpful to keep in mind regarding popular natural hair products and ingredients. What works for one, might not work for another. Know your hair’s characteristics and pick products for your type of hair.

4. Your regimen is too complicated:

There are so many different ways to care for your natural hair — prepooing, oil rinsing, henna, steaming, dry DC’ing — that it can be easy to want to try them all. But how much is too much? Do you really need to deep condition twice a week, followed by a cassia treatment, then bentonite clay and finishing up with a cherry lola? Sometimes, less is more. A complicated regimen can result in over-manipulation, unbalanced hair pH or throwing off your protein-moisture balance. With hair, I’ve learned that it’s best to keep it simple and avoid doing more than necessary to maintain hair health.

5. You didn’t listen to yourself before “talking” to your hair. How many times in the last year or two has anyone started detangling hair at 11pm, or started taking down plaits/twists/braids/_________ when you didn’t really feel like it, or started a cleansing regimen that normally takes you four hours and messed up things trying to complete it in two hours, “because I have to”? You are absolutely right. A hair regimen shouldn’t be so long it’s exhausting to complete. I also try to avoid detangling my hair when I’m too tired or don’t have enough time. Detangling is where length retention is decided for my fine, dense 4c strands.

I’m five months into my healthy natural hair journey and I must say I find this article helpful. Main thing I’m guilty of is copying of you-tube gurus regimen. I still haven’t figured out whether or not my hair needs as much moisture as I tend to put on it(almost daily watering), but I do know it doesn’t really help with style maintenance as I am in mini twists right now. I don’t know when I need to remoisturise, mainly because I find it difficult to tell between ok dry and need to remoisturise dry.

Hi Chechiwa, Hair that is “Ok” dry is soft, manageable and healthy-looking. It may also have some shine or sheen. Hair that is “need to moisturize” dry is hard to the touch, difficult to comb/manipulate/handle without causing a lot of breakage, looks dry or in need of moisture and may be completely lacking shine or sheen. I agree when the once said: Once you find a regiment that works you don’t need to alter. Many of us don’t know which regiment works until we have gone through several. I For for point #2 its okay to copy someone else’s regiment. If your hair responds more positively to it than negatively, then modify it until your hair says “YES THIS WORKS” (I am currently using a modified ancient Chinese method & Yes it works) Point #3: Almost every manufactured/ unnatural product IS NOT right for your hair nor body. I thought I needed protein to help my hair grow. But between eating a protein-rich diet (eggs, beans, salmon) and taking a multi and doing Hairfinity it just became too much. When I finally went in for my first trim after BC’ing and told the stylist what I was doing she told me to moisturize and chill with the protein. It didn’t severly damage my hair since she only did a light dusting (1/8 inch) but now I’m listening to my hair more and paying attention across the board to what I’m consuming and how I’m sleeping.

Most important things I’ve learned in 10 yrs being natural is; less is definitely more. My hair stayed about collar bone length first five yrs due to excessive protective stylin and regular heat usage. By excessive I mean for someone with baby fine strands redoing a style like twice a week. Once I stopped protective styles, started wash n go, and limited heat to twice a year my hair now grazes waistlength. My point is listen to YOUR hair most importantly.
