4 Top Quality, All-Natural Skincare Lines from Our Favorite Natural Hair Companies

Avatar • Oct 24, 2014

Do you go hard in the paint looking at ingredient lists for your hair products? Are you sulfate-free, silicone-free, paraben-free, alcohol-free, petrolatum-free, phthalate-free, artificial coloring-free, etc etc? Or perhaps you pay attention to the ingredients in your hair products because your current regimen experiment (i.e. Curly Girl method, Max Hydration method, etc) requires it. Regardless, many of us naturals will cry before putting a product in our hair that we think is too chemically-laden — after all, there was a reason we ditched relaxers right? But how many of us are as particular with our skincare products as we are with our hair products?

If you don’t want to have to cross check each ingredient in your skin moisturizer with the EPA Cosmetics Database, check out these all-natural and chemical-free skincare product lines from your favorite natural hair brands.

Shea Moisture

Shea Moisture has been leading the pack in natural hair brands that also provide natural skincare products, as they have had products for skin ever since I remember the brand’s existence. From body washes to lotions and with collections specifically for babies and men, Shea Moisture’s face and body products offer a bit of something for anyone looking for affordable, all-natural skincare products. Plus, their new makeup line offers a wide array of customizable color options that are all paraben-free. Shea Moisture’s sister brand, Nubian Heritage, has even more natural skincare products with ingredients ethically sourced from all over the world.

BoBeam Naturals

Bobeam Honey & oats Bobeam Goat's Milk

A small but growing brand, BoBeam is known best for their all-natural, vegetable-based shampoo bars that are non-comodegenic and biodegradable. Good for your skin, hair, AND the earth?? #win. In addition to shampoos, conditioners, tea rinses, and oils for the hair, BoBeam also makes all-natural face wash bars, pastes (masks), and facial oils. Most excitingly, BoBeam has a thorough list of the benefits of all their various ingredients — from avocado oil to oat powder to honeyquat 50. For a list of other small businesses that have both hair and skin products, check out this post from earlier this year.

Thank God I’m Natural

TGIN Moist TGIN african-black-soap

Created by Harvard alum (Go Crimson!), Chris-Tia Donaldson, Thank God I’m Natural has evolved from a book to a vast array of natural products for both hair and skin. The signature TGIN Moist collection promises to solve many naturals’ #1 problem: dryness. On the body side, TGIN has raw african black soap, raw shea butter, an olive oil soap, an argan oil hair & body serum, and a peppermint flavored shea butter lip balm for people who have the simplest of skin regimens.

Alikay Naturals

Alikay Naturals was started by a YouTube fave of mine from way back when — BlackOnyx77 aka Rochelle Graham. Along with a signature Lemongrass Leave-in spray that always has my hair feeling tingly good, Alikay makes exciting skin and facial products for naturalistas such as the Green Tea Chai Facial Scrub, Majestic Beauty Stretch Mark and Scar Remover, Brown Suga Baby Body Scrub, and Jamaican Fruits Scented Body Oils. As Alikay continues to grow and expand, don’t be surprised if they start giving Shea Moisture a run for their money in terms of providing a wide array of natural skincare options.

Do you pay attention to the ingredients in your skincare products with the same care as your hair products? Which other brands have all-natural or organic skincare products?

I’ve been using Burt Bee’s (facewash) for a while now; and have been since I BC-ed. Lush is also worth a shot, their tea tree water mix is great for my skin and scalp. Both are relatively cheap brands as well, in comparison to the ones listed in this article.

I like this piece, Ijeoma. People tend to get so wrapped up in using all natural hair products and forget everything else, make-up included.

I find that I generally check all product labels (food, hair, lotion) to make sure they don’t have certain ingredients. I use SheaMoisture hair products, but I’ve never tried a product from their skin care lines yet. Suggestions, anyone?

I used their Coconut and Hibiscus Shea butter bar soap and it cleared and brightened up my skin/face (but I don’t have bad acne). I’m now using the Raw Shea Butter soap but I like that Coconut and Hibiscus soap a bit better for my combo skin.

I use the ShaeMoisture Black Soap line sample pack, which I’ve been using almost a month now and really haven’t put a dent in it. A little goes a long way for sure, like most of the products. This does more for my skin then the Aveda Botanical Kinetics line ever did.

For a super kick, I love to add activated charcoal to the face mask. Quickest breakout fix ever!!!

I have been using justnaturalskincare.com for a few years. I was looking for products that would not irritate my skin when I washed my hair. Over the years this company has expanded its products. I used the acne treatment line and cleared my acne that I believe I got from tons of stress and hair vitamins. Anyway this website has so many products to choose from for hair and skin care. Also, 100percentpure.com has all natural make-up, nail polish, lotions, creams, etc. I use this site for make-up and justnaturalskincare.com for face cream, vinegar acne wash, body lotion. And I… Read more »

I have been in search of natural skincare products so this is right on time for me! The chemicals used in skincare and cosmetics are NO JOKE! Thanks for the suggestions, I would like to see more homemade remedies for skin care recommended on this site as well, like oil cleansing, etc.

Oyin Handmade has a great skincare line. Their honey wash can be used from head to toe.
