5 Products to Help Your Natural Hair Recover from Summer Breakage

• Sep 24, 2014

With all the twist outs, braids, blow outs, highlights and out-styles you sported over the summer, it’s possible that your hair is not at its best health and is experiencing some breakage. Here are some products for every budget that you can use to combat and reverse the effects of breakage caused by summer styling.

Tresemmé Anti-Breakage Shampoo and Conditioner

Tresemme Anti Breakage

The Tresemme Anti-breakage shampoo and conditioner duo is infused with Vitamin B12, which nourishes hair follicles and promotes the formation of red blood cells and gelatin, which improves hair quality, growth, and texture. You can find this system at almost any drugstore and get your breakage in check almost overnight!

Dark n’ Lovely Anti Breakage System

Despite your opinions on relaxer turned natural brands, the Dark and Lovely Anti Breakage System, which includes Tension Release Hair Wash shampoo, Strength Restoring Conditioner, a Root to Tip Mender leave-in and Super Softening Hair Butter. The whole system will get your hair right, but if you want a quick fix, the Root to Tip Mender is the way to go. For a full review of the system, check out my written review or Jenell B. Stewart’s YouTube video below:

Carol’s Daughter Monoi Repairing Collection

Carol's Daughter Monoi

The priciest option on this list is the Carol’s Daughter Monoi Repairing Collection. It’s made with Tahitian-inspired derivatives of flowers, coconut oil, and coconut water. The Monoi Repairing Shampoo, Conditioner, Anti-Breakage Spray, Sacred Strengthening Serum, Split End Sealer and Repairing Hair Mask all promise 96% less breakage and 13x longer hair life. The Repairing Hair Mask is the ultimate deep conditioner, so use that if you don’t want to try the whole collection.

Aphogee Two – Step Protein Treatment

Aphogee Two Step Protein Treatment

Perhaps you’ve been deep conditioning regularly throughout the summer to reduce the damage of your protective or out-styles yet you still are experiencing breakage. It’s possible that your breakage is a result of an imbalance in protein levels. The Aphogee Two-Step Protein treatment is a super intense protein treatment that will help combat breakage by restoring your hair’s amino acids and overall strength. If you don’t want to buy a protein treatment, create your own with a mixture of egg, honey, oil, and full fat yogurt.

DIY Deep Conditioner & End Sealer

DIY Conditioner

If you don’t want to spend any money on products to tackle your breakage, head to your fridge and make a protein rich deep conditioner with egg, honey, oil, and full fat yogurt. For your ends, mix coconut oil with peppermint oil and apply to your ends every other night.

What about the Aphogee 2 minute Reconstructor????

Thick Nigerian Hair

If I don’t feel like going through the motions for the Aphogee 2 step treatment, I just mix it into my regular conditioner and deep condition.

I think Carol’s Daughter Monoi Collection is the TRUTH, especially the Split End Sealer. But those products are EXPENSIVE!!!

Carol’s Daughter Monoi system is the truth & so is Aphogee!
I love the 2 Step Re-constructor and the Keratin one. Come in handy when I do not feel in the mood to henna!

Aphogee is heaven sent. I use it every 6 to 8 weeks. It stops breakage significantly.

I’ve been researching and learned that protein must be hydrolyzed in order to be effective in adding strength and actual protein deposits. So my understanding is the DYI is prolly softening the hair but not putting protein onto/into the strand.

read my mind w that exact diy recipe…never fails

I heard thay Aphoogee products were meant for chemically treated hair…and that it’s not necessary for naturals to use it…heard this from a licenced cosmetologist.

when I was relaxed, loved Aphogee…tried it as a natural, sorry FAIL. Awful for my natural hair

African Pride Olive Miracle anti breakage formula Leave-in Conditioner works great on my hair and is very affordable. I love it and would definitely add it to this list.
