Trends always repeat themselves. Here’s a look at some hairstyles that are being repeated and taken over beautifully by naturals!
Box Braids
Let’s start with most obvious trend: box braids! This is one style that is certainly not new. Our ancestors have been rocking braids for years, but the box braid craze can best be identified with the early 90s. Fast forward to the present, box braids are a naturalista’s go to protective style. This one beautiful trend that is here to stay and I love it!
The Double Bun
Spice Girl Melanie B. aka Scary Spice vs. Blogger Yomi
This hairstyle had its most popular run in the early 2000s. The double bun became extinct until recently. I am not quite sure when this hairstyle resurfaced but I am certainly not even mad at it. Now I understand this is a style not everyone may be comfortable rocking, but when it is rocked right it is everything!
Half up Half down bun
Now this is one hairstyle I remember my mother sending me to school with and I certainly don’t blame her for it. This style is so quick and easy! It will turn any failed attempted hairstyle into something great. You can do this style with your own hair or you can even wear it with braids, locs and twists!
The Pompadour
Last but certainly not least: the pompadour aka the life saver. This is one old school hairstyle that everyone is familiar with. Best known and identified with people in the 1950s. The pompadour was sound asleep until a certain someone woke her back up. You guessed right, Janelle Monae put her remix on this style and has been rocked by beautifully by naturals across the world.
Are there any old school styles that you’ve seen naturals rock in present-day?

We have unique fashion sense in the UK. 😉
I didn’t even know Mel B. had rocked the Bantu knots. I remember actually knowing them as Nairobi knots from when Jada Pinkett wore them in the Matrix sequel; didn’t know what Bantus were until I started my HHJ!
The 90s/early 2000s have some of my favorite hair trends. I’ve been so bored with the same ‘ole styles so I’ve been rocking the half down-half bun (sometimes ponytail) this summer and love it. That double bun is calling my name!
Bantu knots pre-date Scary spice
I’ve been wearing Bantu knots, the half up half down and the double bun..lovin it!
Wow Yomi is Gorge going to stalk her instagram for a sec be right back
I don’t really like any of these except the box braids, which have been “back” for a few years, now. I think I’m too old and have a bit too much of a classic style to be wearing double buns and I don’t like bantu knots or the pompadour either. I have never stopped wearing my hair half up/half down, though.
The pompadour throw back picture is making me lol. These styles are really fun, I wear them all the time !
No matter how many beautiful girls I see rocking the half up bun I just can’t hop on board. :/ half up pony all day but the bun just doesn’t speak to me.
All I see is Sho nuff.
crochet/tree braids are coming back too
I like box braids but EVERYBODY and their mama has that style in my area.
Crotchet braids. They have really made a come back and have been remixed into some truly amazing beautiful styles.
Funny thing in Jamaica, Bantu knots, Nairobi knots or whatever you want to call them is called Chiny bumbs. Different places have different name for them. American girls are just rocking natural hair and most Jamaican women have never gotten a relaxer a day in their life.
The Faux Locs like Lisa Bonet hair is coming back
and the Nola Darling Tapered fro look.

Man, the hair of Rudy, Vanessa, and Denise Huxtable from The Cosby Show was so great.
I feel like I rock a Huxstable inspired look each week. The Vanessa side fro, Clair’s pinned up curls, Denise’s wild and frizzy curls, etc.
