4 Tips for Finding Quality New Natural Hair Products

Although the availability of natural hair products has grown exponentially over the past few years, you may still find yourself at a loss regarding where to find the latest and greatest natural hair products. Unfortunately, the boom of the natural hair industry has resulted in several mainstream companies developing natural hair lines that are anything but natural, but have all the bells and whistles of touting natural ingredients and gorgeous hair. So how do you make sure you can find quality products and where do you find them?

I consider myself somewhat of a “reformed” product junkie, but I still like to see what’s out there and what’s new. When I’m looking for products, I find out what’s new on the block by:

  1. Lurking on hair forums: Even if you don’t have the time to actively participate in a hair forum, you can read reviews or threads about new products members have bought to see what’s out there. And, a lot of the times people review the product as well, so it’s a double bonus! Some forums even have mobile apps so you can read them on the go – I like to check out updates when I’m on the metro or in the passenger seat.
  2. Subscribing to newsletters: Of course, the best way to hear about a new product is straight from the horse’s mouth – the company newsletter. Newsletters are the best way to hear about new products, sales and company updates. If you don’t want to crowd your inbox, follow them on Facebook or Twitter for similar updates (make sure you check to see which one they update more frequently).
  3. Attending a natural hair event: Every time I’ve been to a hair event, I see a vendor that I’ve never heard of before. These events are prime opportunities for those new to the industry to showcase their products, and a great opportunity for you to see what’s new without worrying about shipping or receiving a product you didn’t expect. Not to mention, prices are usually lower when a company first releases a line. Just sayin.
  4. Browsing on Etsy: Etsy is like, eBay for crafty people. Every beauty product you can think of can be found on Etsy, and totally handmade. Sometimes when I want a certain scent of a lotion or body butter, I simply search the scent on Etsy and see what products come up. I’ve found some of my favorite products this way! While this may intimidate some people, I recommend also Googling the company before buying from them to make sure they are a legit vendor.

If you take my advice, I know you’ll be swimming in new products in no time. Just make sure you pay it forward and share your finds with us! I love a good product find posted on my Facebook page.

Omg yes! I used this white chocolate hair butter from KjNaturals on Etsy on my 4c hair when I twist, braid, etc and its amazing! It leaves my hair so soft and moisturized. Yes to Etsy! And supporting black-owned businesses!

Yes! Although I am more careful buying from very small vendors now, Etsy my go to for scouting out up and comers. No worries about dealing with corporate bs and they often have much more innovative formulas than what’s on the mainstream market. I’ve never used KjNaturals — will have to check it out!!
