What is a “hair milk”?  Well, you can think of it as a light moisturizer and leave‐in conditioner in one.  It is usually white in color and very creamy.  It also generally contains water, an emulsifier and a few oils, but the exact ingredients vary amongst products. So, what makes these particular hair milks amazing?  The combination of ingredients and the fact that many naturals love them!

I love the Shea Moisture curl and style milk, the only problem I have with it is caused my hair to revert so quickly it’s ridiculous

The only hair milk I’ve tried is the SheaMoisture Curl & Style Milk. It leaves my hair feeling moisturized and lightweight. The only thing I don’t like is that it can give me product buildup. But other than that, it’s an excellent milk. I want to try the other hair milks, especially Camille Rose Naturals Curl Love Moisture Milk since I’ve heard great things about it.

The Hair Dew didn’t work for my 4c hair(had to add Castor Oil to finish the bottle) but, Darcy’s Botanicals Shea Butter Hair Moisturizer. Or if you want store brands the Curls hair milk found it at Target and it works pretty well.

OYIN hair dew is so good to my 4b/c hair. It refreshes my hair really well midweek. I’m glad to see oil moisturizers( now under the name hair milks ) improve over the years. A lot of the old school ones were terrible!

It was so good and sadly for me, Hair Dew is now not available in Europe (cosmetic labelling issue)

Hi Miss Gina Ray! I live in Europe too (Germany) and I was wondering — have you found anything that works for you? I’m running low on my stash from the States, and I just want to know what’s available here.

Looking at all the ingredients, it seems they all could be made at home. I have 4 b/c hair and I mix a lot of my product. I like Shea moisture, however i like the hair milk over the creams. To much glycine in the cream and would cause my twist outs to revert. Plus the glycine I would feel the build up. If you have time and can make it, you can write down the amount of product you put in. The results, etc. my daughter gets a build up from the Shea, so less can be added. I… Read more »

I love all of the Shea Moisture hair milks…Curl and Style Milk, Thickening Growth Milk and the Extra Moisturizing Transitioning milk. I use them all as moisturizers/stylers. The transitioning milk is my favorite right now, but I keep them all on hand.

I like hair milks for moisturizing my 3c, 4a hair when I wear wash n go’s. I also layer them under gel when doing stretched styles. Camille Rose and shea moisture are my favs.

My mother didn’t use hair milk (lotions) when I was a natural kid 30 years ago just grease, but as an adult I tried them. Unfortunately they almost always left my hair dry and flaky, yet still somehow damp, *sigh*.

It was also hard to find formulas without strengtheners (protein, coconut/palm, jojoba) or soy. I’ve gone back to using just a bit of plain old natural‐grade lanolin (loves!), but I really liked the smell and texture of products from Oyin, Shea Moisture, Darcy’s Botanicals and Anita Grant. All the icons I’ve seen seem to have great results with them.

Once upon a time, Camille Rose Moisture Milk listed rice water as the first ingredient. It just isn’t the same since they changed the formula. Now, it’s a little too protein heavy (rice bran, aloe, and various nut oils). It really dries out my hair.

I’ve used SM’s Style Milk off and on for years. I love that the formula hasn’t changed since I first discovered it. I use it to set my hair in smooth styles or as a base under curling gels like KKKC.

I’m patiently waiting for some type of sale so I can try the Oyin Hair Dew.

Oyin Hair Dew is so good for my hair. I love it. I tried the Shea Moisture one and found it too heavy for me. I didn’t understand why it’s heavy, if it’s supposed to be a milk.

Shea moisture curl milk is also available at select walgreens, cvs, walmart, rite aids…its really making its way around to being one of the most on the ground accessable natural hair lines that’s very reasonably priced! I don’t have 2 go to a beauty supply store to find one of my fav hair care products.

I love the Shea Moisture Hair Milk. It smells great and has left me with one of the best twist outs on my 4c hair. I also love Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk line. I have the Oyin Hair Dew but have yet to really utilize it.

I tried Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk years ago (long before the brand blew up). It was one of the first times I really understood the concept of listening to your hair: Mine drank it up, burped, laughed, and said, “Is that all you got?” And at that time my hair was probably a third of the length it is now.

Ever since then I’ve steered clear of hair milks. However, I’m now wondering if they would be a step up over what I normally use to refresh my ‘fro (plain water or AVJ followed by oil).

My 3C/4A hair loves Oyin Hair Dew, Camille Rose Natural Hair Milk, Herbal Essences The Sleeker the Butter Hair Milk & Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk.

The only one that I don’t have to layer an oil or heavier cream on top of is the Oyin and I have learned that a little goes a long way with the Carol’s Daughter ~ too much leaves my hair a stringy limp mess. Surprisingly the Herbal Essences product is my 2nd fave behind the Oyin in terms of how defined & moisturized my twist/braidouts are when I use them.

I am obsessed with the Oyin leave in, I buy it in the largest size they offer & it helps that they’re based in Baltimore. I get 1 day regular shipping because I live in DC, lol. But I might have to step out on my HG for the myhoneychild leave in, it sounds amazing.
