Nicki Minaj Shows Off Her Natural Hair on Instagram

Avatar • Feb 6, 2014

Back in 2012, Nicki Minaj tweeted a photo of her straightened natural hair. Because her face was not shown in the photo, it sparked a lot of debate (that, weirdly, continues in our comment section to this day) about whether or not the hair was really hers. In March 2013 Minaj did it again, tweeting a photo of her waist length straightened hair, but not revealing her face.

Well, we can put the debate to rest because it is indeed Nicki Minaj’s hair! She took to Instagram today and posted several images (face and all) of her straightened natural hair, with the simple caption “No perm. No extensions.” The photos show Minaj rocking far less makeup than we’re used to seeing, and her natural beauty is astounding. Now, if we could just get some texture shots 🙂

Why would people be bitter? Her hair is ok. I always say though, that with these famous black women, I don’t get why their hair tends to be so jacked up at times. If I had their money my hair would be down to the floor. With all the best products and care money can buy. There have been regular chicks featured here who would put these ladies to shame. Nicki’s hair is in much better condition than certain other folks. She could use a trim though. And she’s not bad looking without all the makeup. why does she insist… Read more »

Right in most celeb case they the have hair down to the floor because they buy it. If I was a celeb I would probably go the weave/wig route also doing constant photoshoot and appearances with a bunch of different stylist in your head could be damaging

I love Nicki’s hair but sometimes I do wonder why celebrities always feel the need to flaunt their real hair like why.I know they want to prove they have hair. Just a thought I made a video on in it awhile back featuring many other celebs whose done it.

I like the “natural” look (no colorful hair or white-washed make-up) on her a lot better.

She’s beautiful & dark hair certainly fits her better than that damn blonde! Lol I’m really feeling this look on her because not to throw shade but I always thought she’d be bald headed but I guess she just uses weaves as a protective style. I use to do the same, it worked for me & its obviously working for her as well. You go girl!(:

Is it a trend, game or just straight disrespectful? I spent my whole life as a natural but yet these celebrities who i guess needs more attention can just upload a quick pic of their “temporary natural hair” like its a big deal. How about this, if they walked down the red carpet, went to a big event or uploaded pictures of their natural mane more often maybe then ill hit the “like” bottom but until then i can give two f****

Not to be rude, but you sound a tad bitter. How is it disrespectful for a woman to show her actual length underneath the wigs after years of keeping it hidden? That’s her protective style and it works for her. No one has to walk down a red carpet or what have you to get your “like” or to please you. It is not that serious.

Smh I’m tired of the “she’s pretty BUT…” or “I like her hair BUT…” What happened to paying a regular ass compliment and saying nothing else. And what people fail to realize is she is in the entertainment business the wigs, weaves, extreme make-up is part of how she gets paid. It’s sad bc celebs catch hell for being fake but when they get caught off gaurd or are not “working” it’s “OMG she’s not that cute without makeup” or “she aint got no edges” blah, blah, BLAH!

Nicki Minaj is originally from Trinidad. Trinidad has 3 main races there: Chinese (from China), Blacks (from Africa via the slave trade) and Indians. And the Indian people that are there originally came from India…in South Asia. I’m not sure whether any of the native Amerinidians (Caribs/Arawaks) survived.

If shows you how much, as black women, we either a) damage our hair and/or b) hide our hair, that someone has to scream “it’s natural AND long!” and we get so excited over it and applaud. To be honest, it’s not even that ‘long’, but I guess people see it as ‘long for a black girl.’ This actually isn’t a negative post, but just an observation of what it says when we get so excited over this (me included). On a more positive angel, it’s a way to highlight that we can have (and many do), ‘good, healthy’ hair! Which… Read more »

Her hair is long, and yes its looking like hers, but neither you nor I can tell if her hair is healthy from either of these pictures. Yes with all her money it very well should be healthy. But if she is any busier than me-which she totally is-its hard to maintain some healthy hair. I can tell its fine though. Not sure if that is natural or from years of wigs and weaves. Wow. Her hair is gawjuss, although straight hair bores the heck out of me, it looks nice and healthy. and she’s a beaut. I was explaining to my friend who is apprehensive of wearing her natural hair out why she should, and it is because natural hair does bring out the authentic beauty in a person. I mean it’s just obvious, you are beautiful because well, you look like how you are supposed to look. We can def see that with nicki minaj in comparison to her usual over done costumey look.

She looks so much better without the wigs, warpaint, blonde weaves and stupid youtube on crack contouring.

Who knew underneath all that paint was a naturally beautiful woman.

I hope in 2014 women learn that makeup is to HIGHLIGHT your features not distort your features.

Also what good is it to have beautiful hair if it is HIDDEN! No problem with wigs and weaves but let your REAL light show and not only on Instagram.

I kind of agree with you there maitime. But it’s more of a professional necessity. While a young woman here in the real world can get away with a bit of liner and some gloss, she also does not have to sell a brand. Normal ladies can afford a sunspot or blemish or two. Anika’s Nicki Minaj” Character is just that. A persona, a costume that performs on stage for fans. She looks much better with dark hair in my opinion, but I’m not sure what the hullabaloo about having longish hair is with these celebrities. To help lower all the critiques statements. Her hair is gorgeous I do believe it is real. When you have millions it is a lot easier to obtain this length because you can afford an endless amount of wigs and have your hair braided whenever you want. Far as makeup nothing against full makeup such as contouring long as it compliments. Her contouring was never an issue it was the excessive highlighting that was ten shades too light for her skin-tone that was a problem. The absolute nerve of some naturals. “Don’t be showing us your real hair because you don’t rock an Afro on the red carpet!” Please. It’s her hair, if she wants to show off her hair, which it looks like it’s out for a photoshoot, them she could do that the same way it is her business if she wants to keep her underneath those over the top wigs. And why is it that people feel the need to bring up that she or anyone else has had plastic surgery to try and make their point somehow more accurate?

The natives in the Americas were never Indians, it’s a name which was given to them by Europeans. Hence, there being no such person or place as West Indian/Indies. In fact when I went to Jamaica I saw a big divide between the Indians and blacks-the Indians didn’t associate with them ‑have their own shops-speak their language and tend to be bizarrely racist towards the blacks lol even though its the Carribean.

I was with you until you went on Nick Minaj’s hair being stronger than most Black women’s hair and her hair not being typical hair for Black women. There is no such thing as typical hair when it comes to Black women. We come in too many forms to lumped into one category.

I do agree with you about White entertainers wearing wigs, weaves and make up because like you said it’s their job and they are performers. I certainly wouldn’t want to stress my hair from daily performances and having to keep it looking perfect all of the time.

you stated that Nicki hair is long because she is part East Indian and that her hair is NATURALLY STRONGER HAIR THAN MOST BLACK WOMEN…NO that is a MYTH. Black women can grow long hair. Look at youtube and see all types of black women with long hair. If your hair is breaking it’s because you are not educated about how to take care of black hair. My hair is to the back of my horizontal bra strap. I condition it everyday with oil, not grease, and moisturize it with Nexxus conditioner. It is never dry. These products do not sit… Read more »

Her features are the same features that many black women have who are of any heritage…her features are not specific to Trinidadians. Any black woman you come across could have them, whether they identify as African American or a mixed racial heritage…and what is completely black? Because as Di mentioned none of us are “completely black”…unless you are from Africa. Quite frankly I would not speak to judge a person physical appearance, such as their pointy nose, unless I have known that person all of their life and know for a fact that they were born with that pointy nose.… Read more »

I usually never comment on these but um… Really? “Thin lips and a pointy nose make one less black these days? That’s just ignorant and funny. I have very thin lips and a pointy nose and both my parents and all grandparents are black. I even get asked what I’m mixed with since I don’t have “typical black features” smh. How about maybe… God made us all different and as African Americans we are beautiful and diverse and DONT ALL LOOK THE SAME regardless of what color white America classifies us as. Trying to generalize people and place them into boxes is such a small minded thing to do. Like America, India has a COMPLEX ARRAY of complexions, features and hair types. From “snow white,” to as “dark as night.” Also like America, the very dark indians with “strong” features are never represented. Which leaves people to believe there’s only “one look” for a race of people. The picture below are ALL “pure blooded” South Asian or “Indian (red dot)” women. No the one on the right is not AFRICAN or an AFRICAN migrant but she is from the Jarawa ethnic group or… Read more »

Thank you for sharing this history. I went to college with a lot of Indian people and they did appear to have the same complexion issues that African Americans have. The lighter skinned Indians were seen as more attractive than the dark skinned ones by their own kind. Its interesting to hear other cultures are dealing with the same issues after being “colonized” by British or “Arayn” people. Thanks again for sharing.

Every ethnicity have issues with the color of their skin its fascinating that no matter where you go in the world everyone has their own idea of beauty and people are perfectly happy to go through extremes to fit their mold of beauty.

I love this website, but really your lack of knowledge about factual history is astounding, and I’m embarrassed that so many people have +‘ed this. It’s been determined that Dravidians and Aryans not only came from the same race anyway, but infact neither of these are actually races themselves. You have posted a myth. And citing them as a reason for the development of the caste system is laughable.

Depends very much on where she went, too. Places that see more tourism, for lack of a better work, have more Western ideas as far as beauty and appearance. Most Africans don’t really care for African Americans, though. Or rather, the larger groups of Africans that I’ve come across outside of America (a solid portion of them Ghanians), don’t like African Americans.

It’s no wonder we as Black/African American/minorities can’t come together…we’re so divided on something as small as hair and how the next person wears their hair. One picture can produce so much hate and negativity because the person in the picture is not wearing their hair how “you” feel they should wear it. Sometimes it’s almost laughable reading some of these comments and all because of hair.

I don’t really understand why someone’s hair/texture/length/style should be a topic of debate. It’s really not that big of a deal. I refrain from commenting on most of the stuff here cause this is supposed to be about how one takes care of their hair and not criticise someone else’s hair.

I am happy that she posted her hair pics. It is always nice to know what celebrities really like like, but on their own terms, no paparazzi pics of them looking crazy. Perhaps she is slowly transitioning to the point where she will begin to rock her natural hair and drop the wigs? If not, we know what her hair looks like now. Her hair is very long, as long as some of the women who have posted on this site. I wish her continued success.

I love Nikki and her natural hair is gorgeous. Nikki has personal hair stylist on hand & can afford top quality wigs therefore it is easier for her to achieve this. However anyone can have long hair but it take a lot of TLC & patients. A lot of people even I can admit myself I don’t take great care of my hair but it’s on the books, I want to be chemical free and got back to appreciating my natural curls.

People come on!!! This is one of the reasons why many of us black girls have such a complex about our hair. People always make it such a big deal. That’s also why we post these pics of our real hair. Not convinced. These photos prove nothing. Neither of these photos show her scalp. She holding it up which could very easily have 2 or 3 2 inch tracks at the base of it. The other photos don’t really show the base of what she is holding. To clarify, she should take a photo from the back with her hair parted down the middle and then from ear to ear, starting two inches from the forehead to the nape of the neck. Until and unless this is done, this statement remains questionable.

THERE IS NO PARTICULAR LOOK IN TERMS OF COLOUR OR HAIR TEXTURE WHICH HAS MONOPOLY TO BEAUTY. I am from Kenya, a Country of diversity in hair texture and black African skin tones. Here all women are considered beautiful in different ways — either with long permed hair or short kinky hair, slim bodied or curvy ones, light brown or dark skinned ones, etc. I am light skinned and my daughter (12 years) is dark skinned. She has always told me that she likes her “dark mahogany” look and she wants to be a model. I once had long permed… Read more »

ANYWAAAAYS.…Getting back to hair…May I interject? Nikki Minaj looks beautiful indeed. It just goes to show that her methods of keeping her hair healthy under her wigs and weaves actually work for her. I would love if she shared her processes. I’m African. Where u come from we love straight hair. At least ever since I can remember. I’ve been straighteningmy hair with bblow dryers till I was 16 and premed it. I came to the states and I got really bad hair breakage. I did research and I’m now transitioning. Most Africans with natural hair are doing dreadlocks. Only in the us us where people embrace the afro. Otherwise in Africa that’s the seventies.

That’s not true actually. U.S. does not embrace afro hair. Yes certain individual love their dreads and their afros but when it falls down to it they get stereotyped and judged harshly by the outside world.( By outside world, I mean US citizen who are not of african descent) Not to be racist because even african american pass judgement and stereotype on to other african americans. I hate to say it, it’s sad but it’s oh-so very true. The thing it is about america, those with Afros and dreads just simply DO NOT CARE about what everyone else perceives them… Read more »

You say you are from Africa. Africa is made up of 55 very different couuntries, which one are you from? In my country, Zambia, most naturals wear afros, and not dreadlocks, although it is true that dreads have become more popular due to more acceptance. Also people are not extremely in love with straight hair there, more and more people are wearing curly weaves and weaves that one would mistake for natural hair. Mostly people keep their permed because they are uneducated on how to take care of their natural hair and find it difficult, not because they are in love… Read more »

Nicki Minaj is a Trinidadian by birth. If you want to know about her hair texture, look up the term “dougla”. It’s a term used to refer to people who have a parent of African ancestry and one of Indian heritage.
