Introduce yourself!
N: I’m Nikki and I currently reside in Chicago, IL.
Why did you make the decision to go natural?
N: I first tried to go natural in high school. A friend of mine who was natural all her life had the most beautiful curls I had ever seen. She was able to go curly or straight with ease. I wanted the same versatility. I failed many times, but finally got serious in 2005. At the time I was highlighting and using box color, all while relaxing. My hair never broke off or fell out, but I knew that I couldn’t continue. I chose to keep the color and experiment with my natural texture. It’s been 8 years and it’s the best decision I ever made.
How would you describe your texture?
N: My hair is extremely thick with medium strands. I also have a big head, which gives me even more follicles. I have about 3 textures throughout my hair. All tight waves with a slight curl at the end. The only portion that forms any kind of ringlet is near my temples and nape. If I had to give it a number I would say 3b/3c.
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
N: I try to keep my styling routine simple. I style on wash day and try to make sure it will last for a least 4 days. I find that if I have to constantly detangle and reset textured styles that my hair will break off. My textured styles are a wash and go, braid out, or my curling wand flexirod set. I also stretch my hair with large Curlformers. This allows me to prep for other styles like buns and stretched braid outs. I love my straight hair, but I am not flat ironing.
What does wash day look like for you?
N: I love wash day. This gives me an opportunity to relax and try new styles. If it doesn’t work there’s always a cute bun. I start with my own infused oil mixture as a hot oil treatment. I follow up with Mystic Divine Nourishing Shampoo from Sally Beauty Supply. It’s very moisturizing. I shampoo once and use a sulfate-free cream shampoo, like Devacurl No Poo to detangle. Depending on what my hair needs I will deep condition with Mystic Divine Nourishing Masque (moisturizer) or Avlon Affirm 5 in 1 Reconstructor (protein). I cover my head with a plastic cap and sit under a hood dryer for 30 minutes. I rinse in the shower, apply a lighter conditioner, and do a final rinse with cold water. From there I style.
Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style.
N: I’m always prepared if I’m starting to have a bad hair day. I carry a small brush, bobbie pins, hair ties and a travel container of styler to whip up a quick bun. I’ve learned to not fight my hair into what I want, and work with it and the changing weather.
How do you combat shrinkage?
N: Now that my hair has grown out, I love my shrinkage. My shrinkage is shoulder length and if I want it longer I will set my hair on stretched hair.
What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
N: The right side above my ear to my temples is very dry. I make sure to completely saturate that section with deep conditioner. When styling, I make sure to over moisturize and apply a strong hold styler.
What are 2 do’s for your texture?
N: Deep conditioning and keeping my ends healthy.
What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
N: Going more than 5 days with out washing my hair and using heavy oils.
Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
N: Yes! My sister and I have a YouTube channel, Miix Mii. Check it out. You can also find me on IG @_nikkilane_.

LOL!! I have been getting that a lot lately. Thank you!
No you didn’t, LOL! I see Ms. Smith has made quite a name for herself, LOLOLOL
So pretty!
Thank you!
Awww cute Nikki! Love your hair and congrats!
Thank u!!!
wow, my hair’s identical to yours. i love seeing this because it helps me picture what my hair is very likely to look like when it’s your length. your hair’s beautiful, and actually this gives me an idea- to go back to using curlformers! haha shouldn’t have ever stopped, but maybe i’ll get some time this weekend to try it again. i love how they make my hair bone straight without me having to use heat, but i quit using them because the drying time (air drying) takes me about 8 hrs. ACK! but you make it work, so…i’m copycatting… Read more »
Curl formers helped me tremendously. It is a pain to roll it sometimes but it got me through some hair damage. You can sit under a hood dryer. I don’t find that damaging and it takes about an hour or 2
i’m considering it for that very reason. i have tried the twistout thing, and while it’s cute maybe for a day’s style or so, i find that with my hair it has to be redone that very day or else it’ll tangle like something outta this world. i’m hoping curlformers will work for me (i caved and put them in, so they’re all over my head as i type lol) but the only qualm i have is that, like you, i am a relatively frequent hair washer- every 3-4 days or so. do you think curlforming on a habitual basis… Read more »
Now thats some sexy hair! What did you do to your hair to achieve the loose waves in the pic with the red shirt?
Thanks Miss T! I used Caruso steam rollers. I have a tutorial on YouTube. Click on Miix Mii in the last question.
So beautiful – amazing hair 🙂
Thank you!!!
I’ve definitely noticed a trend that after women go natural, you see that they have also lost a lot of weight. You can tell from her pics that she lost a bit from when her hair was permed. I guess there is no way to logically spend this much time on your hair and keeping it healthy and not apply the same principals to your body.
Nikki is absolutely gorgeous. Love her hair and her eyes are intense!
Thank u soo much! You are very observant. I completely changed my eating habits and working out. I feel like being natural is more than hair. It’s a way of life. You can’t be a pro-natural and keep eating like crap
Your hair is absolutely beautiful!
Thank u!!!
Girl you are gawjus! *snaps fingers* Lookin like Stacey Dash!
Lol! Thanks
Your hair is beautiful. What hair color do you use?
Thank u! I don’t remember the exact name. It’s a permanent color by Wella

Wow! Thank u
absolutely gorgeous woman and hair!
Thank you!
Gorgeous hair! Do you trim a lot or have you reached terminal length? I ask bc I’ve seen a lot of girls reach waist length 5-6 years post relaxer.
Thank you!! I had to start my journey over in 2011. I damaged my hair completely and had to transition.
Ok, thank you!
Wow!!! So beautiful! Love your hair!
Thank you!!!
Gorgeous – simply GORGEOUS! had to do a double take at first because I thought you were Stacey Dash!
Thank you! I’m thinking I should be her for Halloween. (Clueless era)

Thank u ma’am!
for some reason i am the type of person that is attracted to color. the way your lipstick in the top picture brings out the soft pink tones in your hair and skin is so pretty to me. i am getting married next year and really want to wear my hair something like yours is in the picture at the very top. did u use heat to get it to hang curly like that? sometimes i wish bglh would require a quick tutorial on some of the icon’s styles in order to be featured. lol!!!
Thank u and Congrats! The top style was done with 4 braids. I have some tutorials on my youtube channel. Moesha included the link above. If you see another style you like, that I dont have a video for, let me know and I’ll record it.
Love it and you are gorgeous.
Wow you are gorgeous and that hair is like POW! When going through your photos from straight to curly it was like I got punched in the face by awesomeness! You are truly an inspiration to keep going on my journey and keeping healthy hair practices.

Wow your hair is gorgeous! I’m glad you were finally able to go through with because look at what you ended up with!
Hi, beautiful hair!! I am inspired by you. My hair just is completely damaged at this point and starting over. I see that you wash every 3 days or so? I have a mini problem with that in that I take a lot of hot yoga and sweat so much that I HAVE to wash it. In addition to that, I also swim in the ocean quite a bit. I am just very active. Do you have any suggestions you can offer me? Totally going to subscribe to your channel! Thank you!! 😀
Absolutely beautiful face, hair, skin.
Your hair is stunning and I love the lipstick colors you wear. I’m about the same complexion and would love to experiment with more colors. What brand and colors are you wearing in your photos? I noticed a red and a light purple color. They are both beautiful on you!
What was your regimen when your hair was in the twa stage?
What is the style of those little curls all over your head? They are so pretty and i wanna do mine like that, i have straight hair that falls a little passed my waist? Help!
Gorgeous hair!
