B: My name is Briana Hall, better known as SmartistaBeauty on YouTube. I’m from the DMV area residing in Maryland.
Why did you make the decision to go natural?
B: I have been natural now for 3 years and 4 months. I’d grown up my entire life with hair that always came past shoulder length, however my hair was so dead! Approaching my first year in college I knew I wouldn’t have enough money or time to come home every weekend to get my hair straightened. So, it was then I decided I wanted to go natural and take care of my own hair in college.
How would you describe your texture?
B: My hair is predominantly 3c with a more silky texture, with touches of 4a curls toward the nape of my neck where I also find the strands are a bit more coarse. My strands are dense and my hair is thick as well, leaving me with a fluffy, curly fro.
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
B: My styling regimen changes so often, just as my hair is changing and growing daily. For the month I prefer doing twistouts consisting of 12–16 twists. For dramatic styles/really big hair I may blow dry my hair straight and do a twist or braid out on dry hair with a leave in. The locking method (locking moisture in via twists, braids, buns, etc.) works best for me because my hair gets dry really, really fast.
What does wash day look like for you?
B: Wash day for me takes about 30 minutes. Not bad for the thickness and length I’m currently at. I finally broke down and started finger detangling and I have noticed a huge difference in softness and frizz. I love the As I Am Coconut CoWash as my clarifier and Aussie Moist as my conditioner. While my hair is drenched with Aussie Moist I delicately finger detangle the sections and twist them when I am finished. When my whole head is twisted I rinse the twists of conditioner leaving a little in.
Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style.
B: My favorite go to hairstyle is the top knot bun! It goes with almost any outfit and can save any old twistout or style that is lackluster.
How do you combat shrinkage?
B: I combat shrinkage using Naptural85’s twist and pin method to give me super duper stretched hair.
What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
B: My nape area has a mind of its own. I have to hydrate that area with conditioner and moisturize it with Cantu Shea Butter throughout the week to make my job easier when I get in the shower to detangle.
What are 2 do’s for your texture?
B: 2 Do’s for my texture are deep conditioning and the locking method. Whenever my hair is dry, unmanageable, or hard to detangle, it’s usually a result of me not deep conditioning like I am supposed to.
What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
B: 2 Don’ts for my texture are excessive blow drying and fine tooth combs. Being that my hair is color treated I have to take extra care of my strands. Heat damage and breakage are no-no’s.
