Solange Rocks a Chunky Fro while Performing in LA

Avatar • Aug 30, 2013

10th Annual FYF Music Festival - Day 2

Solange Knowles rocked a chunky fro while performing at the FYF music festival in Los Angeles. The fro looks like it originated from an undefined chunky twist or braid out. Ladies, what do you think of the look?

*****Shrugs****, IDK why natural blogs are sweating this woman and giving her any shine, she does not want you all to talk about her hair ” no more”, she does not want to be a party to anything natural hair related, PLEASE honor her wishes.

I would rather not read anymore articles about Solange. Ever since she disowned the natural community, I disowned her. I rather someone stand tall and proud who is willing to discuss her hair. Thanks

@ Kim, she hasn’t disowned the natural community, as she still wears her hair in its natural and, from the looks of this picture, low-manipulated state. She just doesn’t want to be the be-all, end-all spokeswoman for the community, and that’s fair. Besides, her actions speak much louder than her words. She’s standing tall and proud in these photos, and she doesn’t need to only discuss her hair, as it’s only part of who she is. Besides, it’s not like she relaxed her hair.

I’m sorry but I’m willing to bet money that she puts no effort what so ever towards the health of her hair, It just looks like she doesn’t take care of it. Now thats her business if she doesn’t want to take care of her hair, but I personally am just all about loving and taking care of your hair, I guess thats why I get a little uncomfortable everytime I see her head.

Her hair looks super healthy to me. My hair looks just like that when I wear it in a loose state, and put forth the upmost TLC on my tresses. Maybe you only find a looser curl pattern appealing.

interesting. in the last pic, the other lady also has her hair fairly loose and free but with solange people are calling it unkempt, saying they don’t care for it and that she doesn’t take good care of hair because of the way the style makes her hair look. Because this just CANNOT be a viable style or way to wear your hair out in public. Solange has kinky hair, I have kinky hair, kinky hair thrives on moisture, I don’t think Solange uses conditioner or oil, shes been natural about 5 or 6 years, after being natural that long her hair should look healthier but it doesn’t, it should be longer but it isn’t. @MissT, How hair looks, its texture, growth speed etc. varies from person to person. Maybe Solange likes it short and continues to cut it. We don’t know. More importantly, I have a hunch that with her money, influence, connections, endorsements, etc, that Solange Knowles has access to the best products and stylists. More access than most of us. She loves her hair enough to keep it natural and often un-manipulated for the 5 or 6 years you mentioned, during a time when most other female celebrities, HER SISTER INCLUDED, appeal to the Western mainstream of what beautiful hair should look like. I love the thick, fluffy layers in her hair. It reminds me of what my hair can do. And her hair does not look like she just “got up and went” to me.

Agreed– It’s obvious that she didn’t get up and go. Get up and go kinky hair would be flattened from sleep etc. Clearly she was going for/ spontaneously achieved a piecey look by lightly stretching her hair. As a kinky-haired girl these comments make me sad; especially given that many of the women deeming Solange’s hair “unkempt” likely have the same type of hair. I think the notion that kinky hair NEEDS to be manipulated to mimic looser textures to be presentable is very pervasive. Have you ever considered that Solange may have hair with a lot of shrinkage? I promise you, even if I leave the house with the most stretched and fluffiest of afros, it can look like Solange’s hair at the end of the day if(and when) there is moisture in the air, and I’m fine with that. Why even suggest that Solange “just got out of bed”? I wear my 4c hair in an afro every. single. day. If I went to bed with an afro and woke up with an afro, I’d have matted hair that is flat according to which side I slept on. One does not wake up with a full fluffed out afro like Solange’s hair.

Most of you are just expressing how conditioned you are to hate kinky, shrunken, natural hair.

I hate when girls ask me when I’m going to do something to my hair.. I did do something to it. I took my scarf off, rubbed some water thru it, then walked out the door.. Why do we have to do anything to our hair to be accepted. Why can’t hair just be hair. “doing something” to your hair is a choice not a requirement. I love being low maintenance and not having to necessarily do anything to my head for it to be styled, so to speak lol

Doesn’t “styling” imply that you did something to it?

Hair IS just hair, but if you choose not to style, and others choose to see your hair as unkempt (which it would be, no matter the texture), then how can you be upset?

As far as being “accepted,” I don’t accept or reject people on the basis of hair. That’s redic. I will accept that “Danielle (& Solange) didn’t do ish to their hair this morning, but that’s just them, and I love ’em just the same.”
